Abstract

A database for finite element models and related data is developed and incorporated into a prototype system for integration of non‐linear finite element codes with a product design system. In the prototype system, the database is used as a link for integrating commercial, public domain as well as in‐house codes. In the present system, the public domain finite element codes NIKE2D, NIKE3D, DYNA2D, DYNA3D and TOPAZ2D are integrated with the CIM–system I–DEAS. The prototype system is primarily intended as a platform in research projects for development of integrated environments tuned for simulations of specific manufacturing processes such as quenching, welding, hot rolling, metal powder compaction and hot isostatic pressing.

Abstract

The library systems office is under increasing pressure to support not only the integrated library system (ILS), but a proliferation of systems, servers and technologies. Some systems librarians have the advantage of a computer science degree, but many have acquired their technical knowledge on‐the‐job. The technological complexity of current systems work prohibits new librarians from entering the field without some existing expertise. Canadian library schools are not adequately preparing new librarians for systems work, and there are simply not enough librarians with a computer science background to meet the demand for computer savvy librarians. This article proposes a third option – the combination of a Masters of Library and Information Science (MILS) with a one year Information Technology Diploma. It discusses the author’s experience moving into systems by way of IT, and outlines the benefits of cultivating librarians with IT knowledge, rather than relying on non‐librarians to perform technical work in the library.

Since 1985, News International has maintained an in‐house database which provides access to several daily and Sunday newspaper titles and has developed into a powerful research tool for librarians and journalists. A plan to provide a web‐based front end to the Editorial Database led to the development of an Editorial Services Intranet which also makes available content produced by Reference Library staff. The material ranges from the databases such as the library’s book catalogue and a record of all aviation disasters to lists of all IRA attacks in mainland Britain and ministerial resignations.

Abstract

Purpose

Semantic retrieval and discovery of datasets published as open data remains a challenging task. The datasets inherently originate in the globally distributed web jungle, lacking the luxury of centralized database administration, database schemes, shared attributes, vocabulary, structure and semantics. The existing dataset catalogs provide basic search functionality relying on keyword search in brief, incomplete or misleading textual metadata attached to the datasets. The search results are thus often insufficient. However, there exist many ways of improving the dataset discovery by employing content-based retrieval, machine learning tools, third-party (external) knowledge bases, countless feature extraction methods and description models and so forth.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors propose a modular framework for rapid experimentation with methods for similarity-based dataset discovery. The framework consists of an extensible catalog of components prepared to form custom pipelines for dataset representation and discovery.

Findings

The study proposes several proof-of-concept pipelines including experimental evaluation, which showcase the usage of the framework.

Originality/value

To the best of authors’ knowledge, there is no similar formal framework for experimentation with various similarity methods in the context of dataset discovery. The framework has the ambition to establish a platform for reproducible and comparable research in the area of dataset discovery. The prototype implementation of the framework is available on GitHub.

Abstract

Purpose

Medical errors have become the third leading cause of death in the USA. Two million deaths from preventable medical errors will occur annually worldwide each year. The purpose of this paper is to find themes from the literature relating leadership styles – leadership approaches in practice – with success in reducing medical errors and patient safety.

Design/methodology/approach

This review analyzed primary and secondary sources based on a search for the terms leadership OR leadership style AND medical errors OR patient safety using five high-quality health-care-specific databases: Healthcare Administration Database from Proquest, LLC, Emerald Insight from Emerald Publishing Limited, ScienceDirect from Elsevier, Ovid from Ovid Technologies and MEDLINE with Full-Text from Elton B. Stevens Company. After narrowing, the review considered 21 sources that met the criteria.

Findings

The review found three leadership approaches and four leadership actions connected to successfully reducing medical errors and improving patient safety. Transformational, authentic and shared leadership produced successful outcomes. The review also found four leadership actions – regular checks on the front line and promoting teamwork, psychological safety and open communication – associated with successful outcomes. The review concluded that leadership appeared to be the preeminent factor in reducing medical errors and improving patient safety. It also found that positive leadership approaches, regardless of the safety intervention, led to improving results and outcomes.

Research limitations/implications

This review was limited in three ways. First, the review only included sources from the USA, the UK, Canada and Australia. While those countries have similar public-private health-care systems and similar socioeconomics, the problem of medical errors is global (Rodziewicz and Hipskind, 2019). Other leadership approaches or actions may have correlated to reducing medical errors by broadening the geographic selection parameters. Future research could remove geographic restrictions for selection. Second, the author has a bias toward leadership as distinctive from management. There may be additional insights gleaned from expanding the search terms to include management concepts. Third, the author is a management consultant to organizations seeking to improve health-care safety. The author’s bias against limited action as opposed to strategic leadership interventions is profound and significant. This bias may generalize the problem more than necessary.

Practical implications

There are three direct practical implications from this review. The limitations of this review bound these implications. First, organizations might assess strategic and operational leaders to determine their competencies for positive leadership. Second, organizations just beginning to frame or reframe a safety strategy can perhaps combine safety and leadership interventions for better outcomes. Third, organizations could screen applicants to assess team membership and team leadership orientation and competencies.

Originality/value

This review is valuable to practitioners who are interested in conceptual relationships between leadership approaches, safety culture and reducing medical errors. The originality of this research is limited to that of any literature review. It summarizes the main themes in the selected literature. The review provides a basis for future considerations centered on dual organizational interventions for leadership and safety.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe and discuss the use of specifically‐developed, inquiry‐based learning materials for Computing and Forensic Computing students. Small applications have been developed which require investigation in order to de‐bug code, analyse data issues and discover “illegal” behaviour. The applications are based around industry case studies and are functioning systems. They have been designed with a view to supporting the teaching, learning and assessment within the database curriculum at Leeds Metropolitan University. The students are required to use investigative methods to discover and address the issues. Additionally, the exercises are intended to give experience of industrial work such as evaluation, testing and de‐bugging of software.

Design/methodology/approach

The applications were designed and developed by final year Computing students as part of their final year project. They were required to identify appropriate methodologies and techniques. The team “adopted”, developed and further evaluated the applications with a view to using them in teaching.

Findings

The initial feedback is that students like the exercises; they initially may not realize there is anything “wrong” with the applications and enjoy discovery of issues. The exercises have raised their awareness of data quality, data integrity and improved their confidence to question results from reports and queries.

Originality/value

The intention is to build a “bank” of learning objects which mimic real computing and computing‐forensic tasks.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find the problems in the establishment of Chinese digital publishing policies and regulations system.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is through analysis the digital publishing policies and regulations in China referring to digital publishing macro policies, e-book policies, digital music policies, network animated cartoon policies, network game policies, as well as through examining the legal system (law, administrative regulation, departmental rules, judicial interpretation) in China.

Findings

The paper concludes that the framework of this system should contain three layers, and Chinese digital publishing policies and regulations system will continue to be improved and digital publishing market will be standardized operation. The digital publishing industry policies, digital publishing resource policies, digital technology policies, copyright policies and personnel training policies need for further investigation and research.

Research limitations/implications

Because of the coverage of digital publishing industry is so wide, the policies and regulations which the paper analyzed were not so comprehensive.

Practical implications

It can help the Chinese government make more comprehensive and rational policies and regulations for digital publishing industry and ensure the sustainable development of digital publishing industry.

Social implications

The sound of digital publishing policies and regulations system could create a regular and healthful environment for social community participating spiritual creating and sharing.

Originality/value

The paper proposes that the government should first make clear the basic objectives of the digital publishing policies and regulations system in China and then determine the content of the system. It has a positive significance to promote the establishment the system of policies and regulations in China and can ensure the sustainable development of digital publishing industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the adoption and diffusion of technology including SAAS software and cloud computing for facilitating knowledge management (KM) in product innovation based on understanding of consumer behavior. Technopreneurship can drive sustainable product innovation by studying the patterns of consumer behavior. Sharing of consumer intelligence on cloud using SAAS is being used by several companies to drive innovation such as call centers in South Asia. However, there is no understanding role of knowledge management for understanding consumer behavior for product innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology uses case method of action research technique coupled with grounded theory development. Further, the study uses interpretive structural modelling (ISM) technique for interpreting the results for understanding consumer behavior patterns for enabling product innovation.

Findings

The findings suggest that enhancement of creative design based on consumer's study can lead to sustainable product development. The findings revealed that consumer behavior patterns embedded in the firm's intelligence captured in KM portal including customers' preferences and choices that can be developed into products. Knowledge management facilitated flexible manufacturing process, optimized capital expenditure using agility principles as per the study. Techniques and processes such as reactive scaling top down and bottom up and applying flexible APIs (Application Programming Interface) allowed the efficient automation of infrastructure orchestration and resource allocation. The involvement of vendors’ knowledge base facilitated creation of market ready product offers leading to sustainability.

Research limitations/implications

The implications include the adoption of inter-disciplinary and inter country understanding of knowledge management application for understanding consumer behavior to lead to sustainable product development.

Originality/value

The scope and scale of technology entrepreneurship include the application of knowledge management for consumer behavioral studies that have huge contributions to make product development sustainable using greener planet, purpose and product (3P model).

Abstract

Purpose

This study seeks to explore the demand side of the labour market influenced by the digital revolution. It aims at identifying the new composition of skills and their value as implicitly manifested by employers when they look for the new labour force. The authors analyse the returns to computing skills based on text mining techniques applied to the job advertisements.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology is based on the hedonic pricing model with the Heckman correction to overcome the sample selection bias. The empirical part is based on a large data set that includes more than 9m online vacancies on one of the biggest job boards in Russia from 2006 to 2018.

Findings

Empirical evidence for both negative and positive returns to computing skills and their monetary values is found. Importantly, the authors also have found both complementary and substitutional effects within and between non-domain (basic) and domain (advanced) subgroups of computing skills.

Originality/value

Apart from the empirical evidence on the value of professional computing skills and their interrelations, this study provides the important methodological contribution on applying the hedonic procedure and text mining to the field of human resource management and labour market research.
