Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the effect of corrosion monitoring technology for ensuring concrete structure safety.

Design/methodology/approach

A new monitoring system scheme with unattended operation to evaluate the durability of concrete structures is presented, which includes four components, namely, a multi-function embedded sensor, a microprocessor data collecting module, a system data analysis and storage module, and a remote server module.

Findings

The system carries out monitoring of chloride ion concentration and pH in concrete, corrosion current density and of the self-corrosion potential of the reinforcing steel bar.

Originality/value

This system provides real-time, online, lossless monitoring for concrete structures.

Abstract

Purpose

In manufacturing environments, mobile radio frequency identification (RFID) robots need to quickly identify and collect various types of passive tag and active tag sensor data. The purpose of this paper is to design a robot system compatible with ultra high frequency (UHF) band passive and active RFID applications and to propose a new anti-collision protocol to improve identification efficiency for active tag data collection.

Design/methodology/approach

A new UHF RFID robot system based on a cloud platform is designed and verified. For the active RFID system, a grouping reservation–based anti-collision algorithm is proposed in which an inventory round is divided into reservation period and polling period. The reservation period is divided into multiple sub-slots. Grouped tags complete sub-slot by randomly transmitting a short reservation frame. Then, in the polling period, the reader accesses each tag by polling. When tags’ reply collision occurs, the reader tries to re-query collided tags once, and the pre-reply tags avoid collisions through random back-off and channel activity detection.

Findings

The proposed algorithm achieves a maximum theoretical system throughput of about 0.94, and very few tag data frame transmissions overhead. The capture effect and channel activity detection in physical layer can effectively improve system throughput and reduce tag data transmission.

Originality/value

In this paper, the authors design and verify the UHF band passive and active hybrid RFID robot architecture based on cloud collaboration. And, the proposed anti-collision algorithm would improve active tag data collection speed and reduce tag transmission overhead in complex manufacturing environments.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explain, in brief, about smart, intelligent system which actively monitors the wellness of the elderly and will also send necessary alarms to the caretakers or doctors during an emergency because nowadays most of elderly people wish to stay alone independently. It is necessary to monitor their health conditions and activities continuously to prevent occurrence of health problems and also be able to provide medical assistance to them during emergencies.

Design/methodology/approach

The review paper describes the development of a methodology to monitor elderly continuously with a combination of advanced intelligent sensors, networking technologies and data processing system.

Findings

This paper identified various sensors used in smart home such as a pressure sensor, temperature sensor, etc., for monitoring elders health and their characteristics and also the cost, model number, etc., of various sensors available in the market.

Originality/value

This paper contains the comparison of various sensors available in the market that can be used in the smart home and also where we can use those sensors in smart home based on their characteristics.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to understand data management challenges in e-maintenance systems from a holistically viewpoint through summarizing the earlier scattered research in the field, and second, to present a conceptual approach for addressing these challenges in practice.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is realized as a combination of a literature review and by the means of analyzing the practices on an industry leader in manufacturing and maintenance services.

Findings

This research provides a general understanding over data management challenges in e-maintenance and summarizes their associated proposed solutions. In addition, this paper lists and exemplifies different types and sources of data which can be collected in e-maintenance, across different organizational levels. Analyzing the data management practices of an e-maintenance industry leader provides a conceptual approach to address identified challenges in practice.

Research limitations/implications

Since this paper is based on studying the practices of a single company, it might be limited to generalize the results. Future research topics can focus on each of mentioned data management challenges and also validate the applicability of presented model in other companies and industries.

Practical implications

Understanding the e-maintenance-related challenges helps maintenance managers and other involved stakeholders in e-maintenance systems to better solve the challenges.

Originality/value

The so-far literature on e-maintenance has been studied with narrow focus to data and data management in e-maintenance appears as one of the less studied topics in the literature. This research paper contributes to e-maintenance by highlighting the deficiencies of the discussion surrounding the perspectives of data management in e-maintenance by studying all common data management challenges and listing different types of data which need to be acquired in e-maintenance systems.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review existing wireless sensor network (WSN) setups in various domains, focusing on affordable WSN so that it can be effectively utilised in solving the environmental problems. WSN is being explored in many applications such as home security, smart spaces, environmental monitoring, battlefield surveillance and target tracking. WSN consists of a number of tiny, low-powered, energy-constrained sensor nodes with sensing, data processing and wireless communication components. Creating a WSN setup will make the monitoring system effective and in future, it will give a roadmap for solving some common societal problems.

Design/methodology/approach

Various research papers in the area of WSN have been reviewed on the basis of technologies and application on different fields.

Findings

WSN was found to be the most effective solution in areas which are less explored due their hazardous nature and are difficult to reach.

Originality/value

This review is based on research papers available and a recent trend in the area of WSN has been explored.

From the perspective of any nation, rural areas generally present a comparable set of problems, such as a lack of proper healthcare, education, living conditions, wages and market opportunities. Some nations have created and developed the concept of smart villages during the previous few decades, which effectively addresses these issues. The landscape of traditional agriculture has been radically altered by digital agriculture, which has also had a positive economic impact on farmers and those who live in rural regions by ensuring an increase in agricultural production. We explored current issues in rural areas, and the consequences of smart village applications, and then illustrate our concept of smart village from recent examples of how emerging digital agriculture trends contribute to improving agricultural production in this chapter.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to identify some of the challenges that need to be addressed to accelerate the deployment and adoption of smart health technologies for ubiquitous healthcare access. The paper also explores how internet of things (IoT) and big data technologies can be combined with smart health to provide better healthcare solutions.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors reviewed the literature to identify the challenges which have slowed down the deployment and adoption of smart health.

Findings

The authors discussed how IoT and big data technologies can be integrated with smart health to address some of the challenges to improve health-care availability, access and costs.

This system reduces the water and electricity consumption, and labor cost.

Difficult to implement on a small farm field with different crops.

Practical implications

Crop type, soil type and environment data should be considered for better saving of water.

Social implications

Reduces the water consumption, electricity, man power and increase production.

Originality/value

The soil type, crop type and environment data have been added before irrigation. The climate data also included before scheduling. Dynamic changing of irrigation timings based on the climate and sensor data.

Abstract

Purpose

Big data challenges and opportunities on the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) have emerged as a transformative paradigm to change intelligent transportation systems. With the growth of data-driven applications and the advances in data analysis techniques, the potential for data-adaptive innovation in IoV applications becomes an outstanding development in future IoV. Therefore, this paper aims to focus on big data in IoV and to provide an analysis of the current state of research.

Design/methodology/approach

This review paper uses a systematic literature review methodology. It conducts a thorough search of academic databases to identify relevant scientific articles. By reviewing and analyzing the primary articles found in the big data in the IoV domain, 45 research articles from 2019 to 2023 were selected for detailed analysis.

Findings

This paper discovers the main applications, use cases and primary contexts considered for big data in IoV. Next, it documents challenges, opportunities, future research directions and open issues.

Research limitations/implications

This paper is based on academic articles published from 2019 to 2023. Therefore, scientific outputs published before 2019 are omitted.

Originality/value

This paper provides a thorough analysis of big data in IoV and considers distinct research questions corresponding to big data challenges and opportunities in IoV. It also provides valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in evolving this field by examining the existing fields and future directions for big data in the IoV ecosystem.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a novel robotic system for airport pavement inspection tasks.

Design/methodology/approach

The cloud-edge-terminal-based distributed architecture is designed for the proposed robotic system. Then, the following three major parts are designed and deployed, respectively: Terminal: the wheeled-robot-based data collection system. Edge: remote monitoring and data analysis system. Cloud: shared database center of the inspection data and knowledge.

Findings

Validation and application results show that the proposed system satisfies the demands of automated airport pavement inspection tasks and saves the cost of manpower and time.

Originality/value

The proposed system provides a novel solution for the full process of airport pavement inspection. Compared with the traditional manual method, the robotic system can guarantee complete coverage and provide high-precision pavement inspection results with less time and labor costs.
