Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of a mixed methods study that explored how active community engaged and connected managers were in their local and broader communities (engaged leadership, EL). The paper specifically investigates an under researched aspect of EL – “connectorship” – with focus on developing a measure for connectorship. The authors present the conceptual framework for EL, followed by the operationalization of “connectorship” construct.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper focusses on developing a measure for connectorship using data from a qualitative study of 18 senior managers followed by a survey of 458 managers in Canada.

Findings

Content analyses of qualitative data led to the generation of 93 items measuring connectorship. Based on these items, quantitative analyses of survey data from 453 respondents yielded a final measure of connectorship, which consisted of 28 items explored under eight dimensions.

Research limitations/implications

An organization’s emphasis on connectedness and engagement of leaders will improve knowledge sharing and better mutual understanding of organizational issues among managers. It will also help attain employment stability and decrease hiring and related costs by reducing turnover. Future research, specifically longitudinal studies of leaders at various organizational levels, could incorporate connectorship as a key criterion for leadership effectiveness.

Practical implications

The focus on connectorship skills implies that in organizations the emphasis should go beyond traditional leadership skills development and included the neglected connectorship skills development. Increased connectedness and engagement among leaders will have positive performance implications.

Social implications

For effective corporate citizenship, the EL framework and a focus on connectorship would help leaders better understand the importance of social networks, be aware of their own network, and improve their skills in connecting the people within their networks.

Originality/value

Using a variable centered approach within the framework of EL the paper contributes to leadership literature by conceptually defining connectorship developing a measure for this construct and testing its psychometric properties.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how probabilistic simulation can be used to assist prospective general partners (GP) and limited partners (LP) of a venture capital limited partnership fund to evaluate alternative investment strategies for the proposed fund. The model presented in the paper is based upon observed characteristics of the venture capital market reported in the finance, economics, and management science literature. The body of the paper is organized as follows. In Section II we review the structural characteristics of the model. In Section III we present the results, in terms of ending wealth, obtained from simulating the fund's operations over its life under selected alternative investment strategies. In Section IV we show evaluations of the fund's simulated results under expected return, mean/variance and four moment approaches. In Section V, we present conclusions and implications of the results for financial management.

Romania is making a strong comeback in the international business arena after 45 years of communism and freedom since the revolution of 1989. This article takes a strategic perspective of the opportunities available to US investors. The article begins with a review of the post‐communist economy in Romania through current US investment status. Key reasons to invest in Romania today include the current government and its vision for Romania, the stable business environment and growing industrial,agricultural and technology sectors. The article concludes with investment strategies and the importance of pairing with local partners.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents a structured literature review of studies on IT-enabled organizational transformation to determine the state of the art and to identify areas for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

We collect 201 academic publications on IT-enabled organizational transformation and analyze them from three perspectives: a publication perspective, a research perspective and a conceptual perspective.

Findings

From a publication perspective, we identify and synthesize the seminal works to provide a brief history of research on IT-enabled organizational transformation. From a research perspective, we show that studies in this area have seldom been grounded in theory and have predominantly used qualitative approaches, while only a few studies have drawn from quantitative data. From a conceptual perspective, we show that most research has studied higher levels of transformation, especially process redesign.

Originality/value

This review presents the landscape of the literature on IT-enabled organizational transformation, which provides a foundation for future research.

Abstract

This paper considers the role and process of the formation and development of a social network in the furtherance of rural small business. The paper's contribution is in enhancing our knowledge about the social aspects of rural networking. The study uses a qualitative approach of data collection involving participant observation and interviews to build a full picture of the networking activities of two competing olive oil producers based in a small village in Greece. The data were analysed by comparative analysis to show that for both cases networking is primarily a social activity. Networking practices involved becoming embedded in the community, building a reputation for usefulness and establishing trust. It was noted that the entrepreneurs both focused on linking activities by using their position within the rural network to establish useful further external linkages.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of the study was to assess the entrepreneurial orientation based on personality and attitude of female aspirant human resources in India.

Design/methodology/approach

For collecting primary data, the scale on entrepreneurial attitude orientation developed by Robinson et al. (1991) was used. Statistical tools such as correlations, analysis of variance, means, grand means, standard deviations and percentages were used for the analysis of the primary data gathered from 500 female respondents.

Findings

The results showed the highest score of the female respondents on the achievement motivation as compared to other three personality descriptors and lowest but positive score on the self-esteem dimension. Among attitude components, the cognition had emerged as highest. MBAs showed comparatively less entrepreneurial orientation than other categories of female aspirants. Results indicated that lower age, lower educational qualifications and high socioeconomic status supported the entrepreneurship.

Research limitations/implications

The study was limited to only four personality traits and three attitude components. Another limitation of the study was that the data were collected from North India that could have been collected from the wider area.

Practical implications

The study will be helpful to the female aspirant participants to decide whether to choose managerial or entrepreneurial careers. By taking cues from this study, educators can build curriculum and develop programs to encourage and empower future female entrepreneurs.

Originality/value

Inclusion of Indian female aspirants of different backgrounds will definitely add value to the existing knowledge, management theory and practice.
