Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is for examining the evolution of stakeholder influence and the trans-period effect (TPE) of process performance of public–private partnerships (PPPs). TPE refers to the ripple effect of project performance across different phases of a PPP.

Design/methodology/approach

Social network analysis is used to analyze each stakeholder’s influence on PPP performance. For examining the TPE, partial least squares structural equation modelling is conducted.

Findings

The performance in the five phases (e.g. initiation and planning, procurement, construction, operation and transition) of PPPs exhibits significant TPE. The stakeholder network varies in different phases. The most influential stakeholder is a public authority, followed by a public initiator and a private consortium.

Research limitations/implications

The project type of PPPs is not considered in the stakeholder network analysis. Future work should focus on developing a multidimensional stakeholder network by considering the typology of the project. Moreover, the TPE cannot reflect the relationships between the KPIs in the different phases, and thus, further study is required.

Practical implications

This research provides a useful tool for measuring the life cycle outputs and outcomes of PPPs through enhanced process-oriented performance measurement. The developed PMS enable practitioners to have a better understanding of the process performance of the projects and then ensure informed decision-making about actions to be required and taken to improve future performance.

Originality/value

This study contributes to knowledge of performance management by simultaneously addressing the process and stakeholder management theories within the context of PPPs. The proposed PMS provides an insight into managing stakeholders’ influences to enhance the life cycle performance of PPPs.

Abstract

Purpose

Continuum manipulators are often used in complex and narrow space in recent years because of their flexibility and safety. Vision is considered to be one of the most direct methods to obtain its spatial shape. However, with the improvement of the cooperation requirements of multiple continuum manipulators and the increase of space limitation, it is impossible to obtain the complete spatial shape information of multiple continuum manipulators only by several cameras.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes a fusion method using inertial navigation sensors and cameras to reconstruct the shape of continuum manipulators in the whole workspace. The camera is used to obtain the position information, and the inertial navigation sensor is used to obtain the attitude information. Based on the above two information, the shape of the continuum manipulator is reconstructed by fitting Bézier curve.

Findings

The experiment result of single continuum manipulator shows that the cubic Bézier curves is applicable to curve fitting of variable curvature, the maximum fitting error is about 2 mm. Meanwhile, the experiment result shows that this method is not affected by obstacles and can still reconstruct the shape of the continuum manipulators in 3-D space by detecting the position and attitude information of the end.

Originality/value

According to the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study on spatial shape reconstruction of multiple continuum manipulators and the first study to introduce inertial navigation sensors and cameras into the field of shape reconstruction of multiple continuum manipulators in narrow space. This method is suitable for shape reconstruction of manipulator with variable curvature continuum manipulator. When the vision of multiple continuum manipulators is blocked by obstacles, the spatial shape can still be reconstructed only by exposing the end point. The structure is simple, but it has certain accuracy within a certain range.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impacts of formal and informal hierarchical governances (HGs) on the performance of mega-projects and the mediating role of contractor behavior (i.e. perfunctory and consummate behaviors) in these relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 375 valid data entries from managers representing 375 mega-projects were analyzed through path analysis.

Findings

Both formal and informal HGs exert positive effects on the performance of mega-projects. While formal HG positively affects contractor perfunctory behavior and contractor consummate behavior, informal HG affects contractor perfunctory behavior only. Contractor behavior mediates the relationship between formal HG and project performance.

Research limitations/implications

The impacts of potential moderators (e.g. institutional arrangement and complexity) on the relationship between HG and contractor behavior have not been considered in this study.

Practical implications

This study is useful for owners to enhance formal HG to improve contractor perfunctory and consummate behaviors, which in turn can enhance the performance of mega-projects.

Originality/value

This study expands the knowledge of mega-project performance management from the perspective of HG. It also contributes to the literature of contractor behavior within the context of mega-projects.

Abstract

Purpose

The performance of public–private partnerships (PPPs) can be determined by a variety of factors, i.e. influencing factors (IFs). This study is undertaken for a purpose of identifying how such factors determine the project's performance (i.e. factor transmission patterns), particularly from the key stakeholders' perspectives.

Design/methodology/approach

A hybrid approach, which comprises a Social Network Analysis, ISM (i.e. Interpretive Structural Modeling) and an improved DEMATEL (i.e. Decision-Making Trail and Evaluation Laboratory), was developed to analyze the causal relationships between the identified IFs as well as the transmission patterns of their impacts on PPPs. Data were collected from interviews and questionnaire surveys.

Findings

The transmission patterns of the identified IFs cascade from project environment and features and stakeholders' relationship to the project company capabilities and project process. It is identified that the public authority has a higher level than that of the private entity in PPPs.

Research limitations/implications

It lacks longitudinal studies to investigate the dynamics of PPP stakeholder relationships and social networks. Future research needs to explore the transmission patterns of sub-factors affecting PPP performance and extend the applicability of the developed hybrid approach.

Practical implications

This research provides practitioners with a robust tool that is useful for and insights into enhancing the management of lifecycle performance. It ensures the public authorities and private entities embarking on PPPs will make an informed decision about the monitoring of the life cycle performance.

Originality/value

This study contributes to knowledge of managerial mechanisms that can be adopted to manage factors determining the performance of PPPs. It enables an understanding of stakeholders' roles in driving the life cycle performance of PPPs.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a Stackelberg Game Model for seeking the optimal subsidy plans with varying levels of government financial capability (GFC). Furthermore, the scenario-based analysis is conducted and will enable governments to identify a comprehensive subsidy plan as follows: improve project performance and optimise social welfare.

Design/methodology/approach

A Stackelberg Game Model is developed to optimise the effectiveness of subsidies on the performance of public-private partnerships (PPPs).

Findings

According to the scenarios that are generated from the model, governments that are confronting with limited public budgets could reduce the intensity of performance incentives and increase the participation-oriented subsidy. Whilst a participation-oriented subsidy can stimulate private organisations’ willingness to participate in infrastructure PPPs, a performance-oriented subsidy is capable of facilitating the projects’ performances. Intuitively, the performance-oriented subsidy enables the private entities of PPPs to improve their efforts on the projects to realise higher profits. However, the participation-oriented subsidy is unable to affect the level of their effort spent on the projects. To satisfy both parties’ expectations in a PPP, the performance-oriented subsidy needs to be prioritised for a purpose of enabling higher quality outputs.

Practical implications

The game model developed in this study contributes to the literature by offering new insight into the underlying mechanism of governments and private entities, in terms of their decision-making for subsidy planning and contributions (i.e. resource allocation and spending) during the life-cycle of PPPs. This research enriches the government subsidy model by revealing the effects of the GFC and clarifies the impacts of two different schemes of subsidy on the performance of PPPs.

Originality/value

The government has been conventionally viewed as being omnipotent to provide PPPs with a wide range of subsidies. However, the subsidies are not unlimited, due to GFC. In addressing this void, this study has modelled the impacts of government subsidy plans with a consideration of GFC-related constraints. The combined effects of the participation- and performance-oriented subsidies on the project performance of PPPs have been examined.

Abstract

Purpose

Collecting information from and interacting with customers through mobile platforms for personalization purposes have become a trend. While mobile-based value co-creation has attracted wide research attention, a noticeable gap exists regarding what might potentially affect the firm–customer interaction process through which value is co-created. This paper aims to explore how customers exchange information and communicate with firms through mobile applications for value co-creation purposes in a travel context.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a constructivist research paradigm, this study adopted a qualitative research design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and were analyzed following narrative analysis approach.

Findings

The findings highlight the contextual factors (individual characteristics, trip characteristics and computer-mediated communication characteristics) that facilitate and inhibit the firm–customer interaction process. Practitioners are suggested to put more efforts on creating stimuli for interactions and managing customer expectation.

Research limitations/implications

This study goes beyond technology adoption and focuses on customers’ post-adoption stage. The findings shed light on the important role of the service provider in facilitating effective interactions for value co-creation with customers.

Originality/value

This study focuses on the interaction process, rather than the antecedents and outcomes of mobile-based value co-creation. It contributes empirical evidence on how customers co-create value and why some situations present better opportunities for successful value co-creation.

通过移动资讯科技平台收集客户信息并与客户互动从而提供个性化服务和体验已成为一种趋势。尽管基于移动资讯科技的价值共创已经吸引了广泛的研究关注, 但是什么潜在因素可能会影响企业与客户为了共创价值而进行的互动的过程仍未被确定。这项研究探讨客户如何在旅行环境中透过移动应用程式与服务提供商交换信息和进行交流, 以实现价值共创的目的。

研究设计/方法

本研究基于建构主义研究范式, 采用了定性研究设计。通过半结构化访谈收集数据, 并根据叙述分析方法进行数据分析。

调查结果

调查结果突出了有助于和抑制企业与客户透过移动科技互动的情境因素(个人特征、行程特征和电脑媒介传播特征), 建议业界人士在促进互动和管理客户期望方面付出更多的努力。

独创性

本研究关注企业和客户的互动过程, 而非着重于价值共创的前提和结果。它提供了经验性证据解释客户如何与企业共创价值, 以及为什么某些情况为成功实现价值共创提供更好的机会。

研究意义

有别于过去着重探讨影响技术采用因素的研究, 本研究关注客户的采用后阶段。调查结果阐明了服务提供商在促进与客户进行有效互动从而与客户共创价值的重要角色。

El valor de la co-creación basado en dispositivos móviles: Factores contextuales sobre la experiencia de los clientes

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Basado en un paradigma de investigación constructivista, este estudio adopta un diseño de investigación cualitativa. Los datos se recopilaron a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas y se analizaron siguiendo un enfoque de análisis narrativo.

Propósito

Recopilar información e interactuar con los clientes a través de plataformas móviles con fines de personalización se ha convertido en tendencia. Si bien la co-creación de valor basada en dispositivos móviles ha atraído una amplia atención en la investigación, existe una brecha notable con respecto a lo que podría afectar potencialmente en el proceso de interacción empresa-cliente a través del cual se co-crea valor. Este estudio tiene como objetivo explorar cómo los clientes intercambian información y se comunican con las empresas a través de aplicaciones móviles con fines de creación conjunta de valor en el contexto de los viajes.

Hallazgos

Los resultados enfatizan los factores contextuales (características individuales, características del viaje y características de la comunicación mediada por ordenador) que facilitan e inhiben el proceso de interacción empresa-cliente. Se sugiere a los profesionales del turismo mayor esfuerzo para crear estímulos en las interacciones y gestionar las expectativas del cliente.

Limitaciones/implicaciones de la investigación

Este estudio va más allá de la adopción de tecnología y se centra en la etapa posterior a la adopción del uso de la tecnología por parte de los clientes. Los resultados proyectan luz sobre el importante papel del proveedor de servicios a la hora de facilitar interacciones efectivas para la creación conjunta de valor con los clientes.

Originalidad/valor

Este estudio se centra en el proceso de interacción, más que en los antecedentes y resultados de la co-creación de valor basada en dispositivos móviles. Aporta evidencia empírica sobre cómo los clientes co-crean valor y por qué algunas situaciones presentan mejores oportunidades para la co-creación de valor exitosa.

Abstract

Purpose

As an important part of the rotor system, the damping coefficient of ball bearing has a great influence on the dynamic characteristics of the system. This study aims to propose a theoretical calculation method and an experimental test method to obtain the damping coefficient of ball bearing.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on Hertzian contact theory and elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory, the point contact oil film damping analysis model of ball bearing is established. The comprehensive damping calculation method considering external radial load, centrifugal force, ball spin, rotational speed and lubricating oil film is derived. The multigrid method is used to obtain the oil film pressure and thickness distribution in the contact zone. The variation trend of comprehensive damping with bearing radial load, rotational speed, oil film thickness and viscosity is analyzed. The test platform is designed and the influencing factors of damping are tested.

Findings

The validity of the model and reliability of the test device are verified by comparing the good consistency obtained in the work. The results show that the comprehensive damping of ball bearing increases with the increase of radial load and decreases with the increase of rotational speed.

Originality/value

At present, the existing bearing damping model can achieve approximate calculation of damping, but the factors considered in these models are not comprehensive enough. Besides, few studies exist regarding test platform of bearing damping, and a perfect test plan has not yet been formed. In this paper, the comprehensive damping calculation model of ball bearing is improved, and a complete experimental scheme is proposed to provide reference for the comprehensive damping theory and experimental research of bearing.

Abstract

Purpose

Mobile instant messaging (IM) has been increasingly adopted by hotels to communicate with customers. This study aims to explore communication between hotels and customers and identifies the factors that affect hotel customers’ intention to use mobile IM to communicate with hotels.

Design/methodology/approach

A two-stage exploratory sequential mixed-method design, which combines semi-structured interview and policy-capturing method was applied.

Findings

The findings indicate that customers are more likely to use mobile IM to communicate with hotels for non-urgent matters; before and after a stay; and if customers are accustomed to using mobile IM for work and non-work purposes in daily life.

Research limitations/implications

This study goes beyond traditional theories to capturing communication-related factors that affect customers’ IM use in a hotel context.

Practical implications

The findings indicate why hotel managers should avoid relying on IM as the dominant communication channel.

Originality/value

This is among one of the first studies that explore customers’ communication needs and communication media choice in hotels.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the mechanical property of three-dimensional (3D) Printed photopolymer (Vero Yellow and Tango Black) with different constant strain rate. According to the experimental results, three constitutive models are used to describe the stress-strain and stress-time relation in the tension and stress relaxation process.

Design/methodology/approach

The Stratasys Objet 260 was used to prepare the four groups of samples with different photopolymers (Vero Yellow and Tango Black). The stress-strain and stress-time relations are obtained by the uniaxial tensile tests and relaxation tests performed at room temperature with different constant strain rates. The generalized Kelvin model (GKM), standard linearized model (SLM) and fractional order model (FOM) are used to describe experimental data by means of the curve-fitting approach.

Findings

Experimental results show that the tension stress increases faster at a higher strain-rate for tensile tests. Relaxation stress is influenced by the preload strain-rate for relaxation tests. For the theoretical fitting, the error comparison between three constitutive models and experimental data are calculated to demonstrate the high accuracy in describing the stress-strain relationship for tension. For stress relaxation, the error comparison confirms higher accuracy of FOM with the largest error within 3%, while the error of GKM and SLM up to 10%.

Originality/value

The paper confirms the viscous-elastic mechanical property of 3D printed photopolymer composites (Vero Yellow and Tango Black) for Stratasys PolyJet. As FOM shows high accuracy both in describing stress-strain and stress-time relation for tension and stress relaxation process, it can be directly used as a constitutive model to predict mechanical properties for engineering application.
