Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to create an extended equivalent circuit model for a compound DC motor, consisting completely of electrical parameters and quantities.

Design/methodology/approach

The dynamic model of the compound DC motor is obtained by establishing the voltage equations for the armature and excitation circuit and the mechanical equation for the mechanical part. The mechanical parameters in the dynamic model are converted into electrical parameters with an electrical circuit proposed for the mechanical part. By combining the armature and excitation circuits with the electrical circuit created for the mechanical part, the extended equivalent circuit model of the compound DC motor is obtained. Because the proposed extended equivalent model is completely an electrical circuit, simulations can be made in the circuit simulation programme. Simulations of the proposed compound DC motor circuit were carried out, and the accuracy of the proposed circuit was verified by performing experimental studies with an existing compound motor.

Findings

When comparing speed and current profiles in experiments and simulations, it is seen that compound DC motor can be modelled with the proposed equivalent circuit including completely electrical elements in a simulation programme for the circuits. The results show that the proposed equivalent circuit satisfies the dynamic model of the compound motor.

Originality/value

In DC machine models, armature and excitation circuits are given as an electrical circuit, and mechanical part of the machine is modelled by only mechanical equations. The originality of this study is converting the dynamic model of an electrical machine consisting of electrical and mechanical equations into a completely electrical circuit. With the proposed method, the dynamic model of many motors can be converted into a completely electrical circuit. In this way, motors can be simulated as an electrical circuit in simulation programmes for the circuits, and the dynamic behaviour of motors can be obtained.

Abstract

Purpose

Switching power converters for photovoltaic (PV) applications with high gain are rapidly expanding. To obtain better voltage gain, low switch stress, low ripple and cost-effective converters, researchers are developing several topologies.

Design/methodology/approach

It was decided to use the particle swarm optimization approach for this system in order to compute the precise PI controller gain parameters under steady state and dynamic changing circumstances. A high-gain q- ZS boost converter is used as an intermittent converter between a PV and brushless direct current (BLDC) motor to attain maximum power point tracking, which also reduces the torque ripples. A MATLAB/Simulink environment has been used to build and test the positive output quadratic boost high gain converters (PQBHGC)-1, PQBHGC-8, PQBHGC-4 and PQBHGC-3 topologies to analyse their effectiveness in PV-driven BLDC motor applications. The simulation results show that the PQBHGC-3 topology is effective in comparison with other HG cell DCDC converters in terms of efficiency, reduced ripples, etc. which is most suitable for PV-driven BLDC applications.

Findings

The simulation results have showed that the PQBHGC-3 gives better performance with minimum voltage ripple of 2V and current ripple of 0.4A which eventually reduces the ripples in the torque in a BLDC motor. Also, the efficiency for the suggested PQBHGC-3 for PV-based BLDC applications is the best with 99%.

Originality/value

This study is the first of its kind comparing the different topologies of PQBHGC-1, PQBHGC-8, PQBHGC-4 and PQBHGC-3 topologies to analyse their effectiveness in PV-driven BLDC motor applications. This study suggests that the PQBHGC-3 topology is most suitable in PV-driven BLDC applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to provide the enhancement of power quality of a high power-rated voltage source inverter driven induction motor with a three-phase, three-level neutral point clamped converter placed at the front end, while a passive power filter is connected in shunt with it. The improvement in power quality can be achieved by reducing the total harmonic distortion in source current. The controllers were designed for the linearization of the high-power induction motor drive. A control method is presented for the regulation of the common DC-link voltage.

Design/methodology/approach

The induction motor is modeled using its dynamic equations, and a decoupling controller is designed to linearize the nonlinear dynamics of the drive through feedback. The common DC-link voltage of the proposed front-end connected converter is monitored and controlled through a control method which feeds the pulse width modulated inverter that drives the induction motor. A passive power filter is designed to meet the reactive power requirement of the system in addition to improve the power quality.

Findings

Simulations were carried out for the proposed topology of the drive mechanism, and the outcomes were analyzed by a comparative analysis of the drive system both in the presence of the passive filter as well as in the absence of the filter. The total harmonic distortion is found to be reduced enough to meet the standards with the designed filter, and the reactive power is also compensated considerably. The input power factor at the supply side is maintained almost to unity, and the DC-link voltage of the proposed circuit topology is maintained at the desired level. The overall performance of the drive system was found to be useful and economical.

Originality/value

A new topology of a front-end connected three-level neutral point clamped converter to a high power-rated induction motor drive is proposed. The drive is fed by a pulse width modulated inverter with a common DC-link with the front end connected converter. A passive filter is designed with respect to the reactive power requirement of the system and connected in shunt to the converter at the supply side. Control schemes are designed and used for the drive system and also for the regulation of the common DC-link voltage of the proposed front end connected converter.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to extend the driving range by on-board charging with use of photovoltaic (PV) source, avoiding the dependency on the grid supply and energy storage system in addition to that reduce the conversion complexity influenced on converter section of electric vehicle (EV) system.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposed a PV fed integrated converter topology called integrated single-input multi-output (I-SIMO) converter with enriched error tolerant fuzzy logic controller (EET-FLC) based control technique to regulate the speed of brushless direct current motor drive. I-SIMO converter provides both direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) outputs from a single DC input source depending on the operation mode. It comprises two modes of operation, act as DCDC converter in vehicle standby mode and DC–AC converter in vehicles driving mode.

Findings

The use of PV panels in the vehicle helps to reduce dependence of grid supply as well as vehicle’s batteries. The proposed topology has to remove the multiple power conversion stages in EV system, reduce components count and provide dual outputs for enhancement of performance of EV system.

Originality/value

The proposed topology leads to reduction of switching losses and stresses across the components of the converter and provides reduction in system complexity and overall expenditure. So, it enhances the converter reliability and also improves the efficiency. The converter provides ripple-free output voltage under dynamic load condition. The performance of EET-FLC is studied by taking various performance measures such as rise time, peak time, settling time and peak overshoot and compared with conventional control designs.

Abstract

Purpose

The aviation industry has started environment friendly and also conventional energy independent alternative energy dependent designs to reduce negative impacts on the nature and to maintain its future activities in a clear, renewable and sustainable way. One possible solution proposed is solar energy. Solar-powered aerial vehicles are seen as key solutions to reduce global warming effects. This study aims to simulate a mathematical model of a solar powered DC motor of an UAV on MATLAB/Simulink environment.

Design/methodology/approach

Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is a critical term in photovoltaic (PV) array systems to provide the maximum power output to the related systems under certain conditions. In this paper, one of the popular MPPT techniques, “Incremental Conductance”, is simulated with solar-powered DC motor for an UAV design on MATLAB/Simulink.

Findings

The cascade structure (PV cell, MPPT, buck converter and DC motor models) is simulated and tested under various irradiance values, and results are compared to the DC motor technical data. As a result of that, mathematical model simulation results are overlapped with motor technical reference values in spite of irradiance changes.

Practical implications

It is suggested to be used in real time applications for future developments.

Originality/value

Different from other solar-powered DC motor literature works, a solar-powered DC motor mathematical model of an UAV is designed and simulated on MATLAB/Simulink environment. To adjust the maximum power output at the solar cell, incremental conductance MPPT technique is preferred and a buck converter structure is connected between MPPT and DC motor mathematical model. It is suggested to be used in solar-powered UAV designs for future developments.

Abstract

Purpose

The difficulty in winding coil-based electrical and electronic devices manually lies in the fact that it takes so much time and effort to perform. Furthermore, it is difficult to achieve accuracy manually, as it is possible to lose count of the number of turns being wound. The purpose of this paper is to detail the design methods and calculations used to achieve a cost-effective, significantly accurate and more efficient method of winding coils.

Design/methodology/approach

A program flowchart was designed as a guideline for writing the program. An AT89C52 microcontroller was used to control the movement of the two direct current (DC) motors used in the construction of the machine. The circuit design obtained was then simulated using Proteus to test the functionality of the components together.

Findings

An electromechanical automatic coil winding machine for the coiling of simple, small-sized, coil-based electrical devices was successfully designed and fabricated. The machine was tested by winding a 1 kVA transformer. Diagrams, calculations, results and observations obtained during the design and construction are detailed in this paper.

Originality/value

This machine solves the problem of tediousness in coil winding, stably and precisely winding 60 turns/min at a 24 V supply and providing a keypad input method. Although portable automatic coil winding machines have been rendered previously, most have applied the use of stepper motors. The application of brushed DC motors alongside an AT89C52 microcontroller is a variation to the pool of renditions, offering better controllability and a sustained output.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the prominence of mechanical excitations at the time of welding. In the past years, the process of welding technology has expanded its influence in manufacturing. The crucial drawback of conventional welding is prompted by internal stresses and distortions, which is the focal reason for weld defects. These weld defects can be diminished by the process called post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), which consumes more working hours and needs skilled workers. To replace these PWHT processes, mechanical vibrations are introduced during the process of welding to diminish these weld defects.

Design/methodology/approach

In the current research, the mechanical vibrations are transferred to weld-pool through vibro-motor and DC motor connected to the electrode. As per standards, the tensile test specimens were prepared for welding with different voltages of vibro-motor and DC motor respectively. The weld joints were tested for tensile strength and analyzed the microstructure at the fusion zone.

Findings

Melt-ability at fusion zone of 1018 mild steel was investigated by the single-stroke intense heat process of fusion welding. It is observed that the mechanical vibrations technique has a profound influence on the enhancement of the fusion zone characteristics and grain structure. The peak value of the tensile strength is observed at 100 s of vibration, 190 V of vibro-motor voltage and 18 V of electrode voltage. The tensile strength of the welded joints with vibrations is increased up to 22.64% when it is compared with conventional welding. The enhancement of the tensile strength of the weld bead was obtained because of the formation of fine grain structure. So, mechanical vibrations are identified as the most convenient method for improving the mild steel alloys weld quality.

Originality/value

A novel approach called mechanical vibrations during the process of welding is implemented for fusion zone refinement.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to develop high accurate and unified maximum power point tracking technique that tracks the maximum power from both the photovoltaic (PV) array and wind energy conversion system, (an unified maximum power point tracking technique implemented for both wind and solar sources to track maximum power with higher accuracy).

Design/methodology/approach

In recent times, multi-input Direct Current- Direct Current (DC-DC) converter has attracted attentiveness, to conserve more energy and to achieve more efficiency. The kinetic energy of the vehicle is converted to electrical energy and further stored into the battery, during the regenerative braking (moreover, the battery gets charged during the regenerative braking process by converting the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electrical energy). During such a process, only the pulse width modulation schemes of the inverter are changed. To charge electric vehicles (EVs), two renewable resources as solar and wind are combined to produce electric power. Therefore, it was conveyed that the EV will be continuously getting power without interruption using various sources and regenerated power.

Findings

The performance and effectiveness of the proposed system are studied by extensive simulations and (are) validated using a prototype of the system. The results prove that the proposed system achieves an efficiency of 95.2%, which is higher than that of the multi-input DC-DC converters existing in the literature.

Originality/value

A novel multi-input DC-DC landsman converter for powering plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) is proposed in the research. This method proposes a new cost effective and efficient technique for HEVs with brushless DC motors. Wind power, battery and PV panel are used as the input sources for the proposed converter.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to analyze direct current (DC) drive stability, including parameter uncertainty and perturbation in the feedback loop, by computing disk margins.

Design/methodology/approach

Although the closed-loop stability analysis of a DC drive has been presented well in the referenced papers, the effect of parameter uncertainty and perturbation in the feedback loop has not yet been discussed well. In this study, the conventional and disk-based stability margins were measured and compared for the nominal parameters of the DC drive. Subsequently, the smallest disk-based margins that destabilize the feedback loop for a given perturbation are computed and compared with normal disk margins.

Findings

The disk-based margin offered by the DC drive controlled by the JAYA-PID controller is disk gain margins (DGM) = 8.41 dB and disk phase margin (DPM) = 48.410 and the smallest disk-based margin offered is DGM = 1.51 dB and DPM = 9.950. In addition, the effect of the modeled uncertainty on the disk stability margins was analyzed, and it was observed that the maximum allowable parameter uncertainty with the JAYA controller was 73% of its nominal parameters. The simulation results were validated using an experimental testbed.
