Abstract
Purpose
Through a critical review of the impact of luxury international business, this study aims to contribute to an understanding of business activities that depend on an unequal distribution of income and wealth.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing on a wide range of academic and practitioner literature, this study adopts a critical luxury studies approach to provide an assessment of the economic and social impact of luxury international business.
Findings
Luxury is an increasingly important sector of the economy, which contributes to the welfare of increasing numbers of people across the world. Alongside its dependence on an unequal distribution of income and wealth and the negative aspects to which this gives rise, luxury business generates significant benefits to the economy and society through promoting economic growth, innovation, cultural enrichment, improved quality of the built environment and environmentally sustainable business practices. Nevertheless, an appropriate level of regulation and taxation on the excesses of contemporary luxury consumption could improve the welfare of all. Hence, luxury international business warrants investigation by critical scholars who recognize the complexity of the benefits and dark sides arising from luxury.
Research limitations/implications
This study draws on an extensive review of academic and practitioner literature. However, primary research is required to investigate further the key issues identified.
Social implications
Through an exploration of the impact of the production and consumption of luxury, this study reveals how luxury businesses serving the super-rich can contribute to the welfare of society whilst also giving rise to negative outcomes.
Originality/value
By adopting a critical luxury studies approach, this study offers an original contribution to the field of international business and introduces avenues for future critical international business research.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of having minor children on parents' life satisfaction. Given the demands on working parents in terms of their time and financial resources, the authors suspect a complex interaction between employment and parenthood and explore the effect of parenthood on life satisfaction of mothers and fathers, working parents and those with children of various ages.
Design/methodology/approach
Data from three rounds of the European Social Survey (R3 2006/07, R5 2010/11 and R8 2016/17) are used to account for Ireland's changing economic landscape. Three ordered probit models are estimated examining parents, and mothers and fathers separately.
Findings
The findings indicate that any life satisfaction benefits derived from having children appear to be eroded for working parents. There is a negative association between life satisfaction for working mothers with child(ren) aged between 5 and 12 years. Furthermore, when both parents are working, mothers' life satisfaction is also significantly reduced.
Practical implications
Family policies and supports can shape the effects of parenthood on individual wellbeing and decisions regarding parenthood. Such policies need to be purposeful for working parents of school going children and consistent with economic strategy and labour market goals.
Originality/value
Much of the existing economic research on individual wellbeing and parenthood are focused on the fertility decision rather than examining the factors affecting the life satisfaction of different cohorts of parents thus leading to more targeted and informed policies. Contemporary weighting methodology is employed.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to provide decision support for precast concrete contractors about both precast concrete supply chain strategies and construction configurations.
Design/Methodology/Approach
This paper proposes a simulation-based optimisation for supply chain and construction (SOSC) during the planning phase of PC building projects. The discrete event simulation is used to capture the characteristics of supply chain and construction processes, and calculate construction objectives under different plans. Particle swarm optimisation is combined with simulation to find optimal supply chain strategies and construction configurations.
Findings
The efficiency of SOSC is compared with the parametric simulation approach. Over 70 per cent of time and effort used to simulate and compare alternative plans is saved owing to SOSC.
Research Limitations/Implications
Building simulation model costs a lot of time and effort. The data requirement of the proposed method is high.
Practical Implications
The proposed SOSC approach can provide decision support for PC contractors by optimising supply chain strategies and construction configurations.
Originality/Value
This paper has two contributions: one is in providing a decision support tool SOSC to optimise both supply chain strategies and construction configurations, while the other is in building a prototype of SOSC and testing it in a case study.

Purpose
With the rapid development of transportation and the continuous increase of traffic volume and load level, some bridges cannot meet the use requirements, and the demand for bridge strengthening is growing. Furthermore, bridges are affected by factors such as structure and external environment. With the increase of service time, the deterioration of bridges is also increasing. In order to avoid the waste caused by demolition and reconstruction, it is necessary to strengthen the bridge accurately and effectively to improve the bearing capacity and durability, eliminate the hidden dangers, and ensure the normal operation of the bridge. It is of great significance to study the strengthening methods. Compared with traditional strengthening methods, the advantages of using new materials and new technology to strengthen bridges are more obvious. This paper introduces a new method for bridge active strengthening, called modified polyurethane cement with prestressed steel wire rope (MPC-PSWR).
Design/methodology/approach
Relying on the actual bridge strengthening project, five T-beams of the superstructure of the bridge are taken as the research object, and the T-beams before and after strengthening are evaluated, calculated, and analyzed by finite element simulation and field load test. By comparing the numerical simulation and load test data, the strengthening effect of modified polyurethane cement with prestressed steel wire rope on stiffness, strength, and bearing capacity is verified, which proves that the strengthening effect of MPC-PSWR is effective for strengthening.
Findings
MPC-PSWR can effectively reduce deflection, cracks, and strain, thereby significantly improving the flexural capacity of existing bridges. Under the design load, the deflection, crack width, and stress of the strengthened beams decrease in varying degrees. The overall performance of the beams strengthened by MPC-PSWR has been improved, and the flexural performance meets the requirements of the code.
Originality/value
MPC-PSWR is an innovative bridge-strengthening method. Through the analysis of its MPC-PSWR effect, the MPC-PSWR method with reference to significance for the design and construction of similar bridges is put forward.

Purpose
In this paper, taking a p-section girder cable-stayed bridge as an example, the construction monitoring and load test of the bridge are implemented.
Design/methodology/approach
In order to ensure the safety of cable-stayed bridge structure in construction and achieve the internal force state of the completed bridge, the construction process is monitored for liner and stress of the p-section girder, construction error and safety state during construction. At the same time, to verify whether the bridge can meet the design requirements, the static and dynamic load tests are done.
Findings
The results of construction monitoring show that the stress state of the structure during construction is basically consistent with the theoretical calculation and design requirements. The final measured stress state of the structure is within the allowable range of the cable-stayed bridge, and the structural stress state is normal and meets the specification requirements. The load tests results show that the measured deflection of the midspan section of the main girder is less than the theoretical calculation value. The maximum deflection of the main girder is 48.03 mm, which is less than 54.25 mm of the theoretical value, indicating that the main girder has sufficient structural stiffness. Under the dynamic load test, the natural frequency of the three spans of the bridge is less than the theoretical frequency.
Originality/value
This study can provide important reference value for the construction and maintenance of similar p-section girder cable-stayed bridges.
