Abstract

A total of 12 Alliums, used for culinary purposes, were examined for anti‐bacterial activity against Escherichia coli using disc assay and minimum lethal concentration methods. The 12 Alliums were: garlic (Allium sativum); onion (A. cepa); shallot (A. cepa var. ascolonicum); everlasting onion (A.cepa “Perutile”); ramsons (A.ursinum); leek (A. porrum); chives (A. schoenoprasum); wild leek (A. ampeloprasum); Babington’s leek (A. ampeloprasum var. babingtonii); Chinese chives (A. ramosum); nodding onion (A. cernuum) and crow garlic (A. vineale). Garlic, ramsons, wild leek, Babington’s leek, Chinese chive and crow garlic exhibited anti‐bacterial activity. The correlation coefficient between the results of the disc assay and minimum lethal concentration methods was highly significant (r = 0.977; p = 0.0001).

Abstract

Purpose

To explore the roles of perceived leader caregiving, and followers’ leader-specific attachment orientations, in followers’ experiences of negative interactions and emotions.

Methodology/approach

In a qualitative field study, individuals identified as secure and insecure (avoidant or anxious) on a pre-measure of leader-specific attachment, were interviewed regarding perceptions of leader caregiving and experiences of negative affective events in their current leadership dyad.

Findings

Followers perceived and interpreted negative interpersonal events and emotions in ways that reflected underlying attachment concerns, and embedded perceptions, of leader caregiving quality.

Research limitations/implications

The study was small-scale but provides rich relational information on which future researchers can build to further explore the development and impact of leader-follower attachment dynamics.

Practical implications

Attachment-focused leadership development training may be useful in enhancing leader-follower relationship quality.

Originality/value

This study is the first to demonstrate qualitatively the associations between followers’ leader-specific attachment orientations, their perceptions of leader caregiving, and their experiences of negative affective events in the leader-follower dyad.

In this phenomenological study, the experiences of seven Black women faculty at predominantly White institutions (PWIs) who are working toward tenure and promotion are presented. The use of phenomenology, specifically in-depth interviews, gives voice to the women as they share the essence of their experiences including their perceived supports and barriers. Understanding their experiences adds to the literature on women of color in education and has the implications for schooling and community, and support structures essential to the success of Black women and all women of color in academe.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a dynamic compact thermal model (DCTM) of electronic packages. This model is a necessary tool for rapid thermal analysis of the systems which we exposed to boundary condition variation and/or power switching mode such as mobile systems and battery powered systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology of compact model generation used was based on generating the transient dynamic detailed finite element thermal model of a package, designing a resistor/capacitor network topology representative of the dynamic detailed model, calculating the resistors'/capacitors' value by optimization method and validation efforts. The method is demonstrated for a ball grid array (BGA) package, a commonly used modern electronic package.

Findings

Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that the dynamic thermal behavior of a BGA package can be accurately described by a generated dynamic compact model in terms of predicted junction temperature response and heat flux of the desired locations of the package.

Originality/value

This model is capable of calculating the temperatures and heat fluxes at desired locations which can help the designer to perform the thermal analysis much faster and easier with the required accuracy.

This study features interactions with White students and female colleagues from two regions in the United States. Helm's Racial Identity Model for Whites offers a conceptual lens to understand classroom and workplace dynamics between Blacks and Whites in predominantly White postsecondary settings, regardless of national context. Findings suggest that the quality of experiences with White colleagues and students often reflected the status individuals held in terms of their own racial identity development. These findings promise to inform institutional policy and faculty evaluation practices.

Abstract

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a form of distance education courses. They have been celebrated as revolutionizing the way learners access education and the way colleges and universities could expand education on a global scale beyond their traditional campuses. The purpose of this study is to identify the pedagogical strategies used for instruction and assessment in leadership-oriented MOOCs and gain a more refined understanding of the current state of MOOCs in leadership education. This study examines 96 leadership MOOCs across the platforms of Coursera, EdX, FutureLearn, Canvas.net, and Standford Online through a content analysis research framework. The study concludes with a discussion of leadership MOOC pedagogy and presents the current state of MOOCS among leadership education and professional development.

Abstract

A third‐party facilitator was engaged to develop a design to resolve conflicts and begin team building between nurses and physicians in a Canadian Community Hospital. Each group met individually and later together to identify perceived problems, but actual discussions focused on administrative and strategic issues adversely affecting both groups concerned with patient care. Rather than focusing on the relationship between each group, discussions dealt with operationalization of the new mission/strategy with the objective of team building. The group sessions resulted in an understanding of administrative manipulation and ensured a stronger collaborative effort for both groups by placing the problem where it really existed, with top administration.
