Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to introduce an alternative construction for microfluidic micromixers, where the effect of the extruded filaments in the fused deposition modeling (FDM) technique is used to enhance mixing performance identified as a challenge in microfluidic micromixers.
Design/methodology/approach
A simple Y-shaped micromixer was designed and printed using FDM technique. Experimental and numerical studies were conducted to investigate the effect of the extruded filaments on the flow behavior. The effects of the extruded width (LW), distance between adjacent filaments (b) and filament height (h1) are investigated on the mixing performance and enhancing mixing in the fabricated devices. The performance of fabricated devices in mixing two solutions was tested at flow rates of 5, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 150 µL/min.
Findings
The experimental results showed that the presence of geometrical features on microchannels, because of the nature of the FDM process, can act as ridges and generate a lateral transform through the transverse movement of fluids along the groove. The results showed the effect of increasing ridge height on the transverse movement of the fluids and, therefore, chaotic mixing over the ridges. In contrast, in the shallow ridge, diffusion is the only mechanism for mixing, which confirms the numerical results.
Originality/value
The study presents an exciting aspect of FDM for fabrication of micromixers and enhance mixing process. In comparison to other methods, no complexity was added in fabrication process and the ridges are an inherent property of the FDM process.

Abstract
The study of relevant geometrical parameters for the design and fabrication of thick film microchannels has been considered in this work. An analysis of geometrical behaviour was performed applying linear regression techniques. This procedure allows the design of structural elements (lateral walls) necessary for channels, predicting the final dimensions for original screen pattern design. A 100 μm wide and 15 μm high microchannel was constructed on the basis of the characteristics defined in the study.

Abstract
Purpose
In today’s economy, intangibles have become more important than physical assets for firm success. In particular, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) registered an increasing trend in patenting, exceeding large firms in the number of patent registrations. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the association between patents and SME sales performance, taking into consideration also patent quality.
Design/methodology/approach
The approach uses panel regression model to investigate the relationship between patenting and sales, controlling for firm size and firm age. The authors adopt a purposive sampling technique focusing on a sample of Italian SMEs in the mechanical industry.
Findings
The results show that the count of patents do not have any effect on sales performance, while the number of jurisdictions where the protection is extended produces a positive and significant result.
Practical implications
The main implication for SME entrepreneurs and managers is that relying on a large number of patents does not automatically lead to higher performance; instead, filing those patents which protect particularly valuable innovations could be more productive in terms of SME sales performance Moreover, the results suggest that a longer time lag between patent filing and SME sales performance might be possible.
Originality/value
This paper is one of first attempts to shed light on the issue regarding SMEs patent quality. It is notable that the quality of patents in terms of geographical scope is positively associated to SME sales performance.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to combine Eringen’s micromorphic and nonlocal theories and thus develop a comprehensive size-dependent beam model capable of capturing the effects of micro-rotational/stretch/shear degrees of freedom of material particles and nonlocality simultaneously.
Design/methodology/approach
To consider nonlocal influences, both integral (original) and differential versions of Eringen’s nonlocal theory are used. Accordingly, integral nonlocal-micromorphic and differential nonlocal-micromorphic beam models are formulated using matrix-vector relations, which are suitable for implementing in numerical approaches. A finite element (FE) formulation is also provided to solve the obtained equilibrium equations in the variational form. Timoshenko micro-/nano-beams with different boundary conditions are selected as the problem under study whose static bending is addressed.
Findings
It was shown that the paradox related to the clamped-free beam is resolved by the present integral nonlocal-micromorphic model. It was also indicated that the nonlocal effect captured by the integral model is more pronounced than that by its differential counterpart. Moreover, it was revealed that by the present approach, the softening and hardening effects, respectively, originated from the nonlocal and micromorphic theories can be considered simultaneously.
Originality/value
Developing a hybrid size-dependent Timoshenko beam model including micromorphic and nonlocal effects. Considering the nonlocal effect based on both Eringen’s integral and differential models proposing an FE approach to solve the bending problem, and resolving the paradox related to nanocantilever.

This chapter presents a discussion of innovations in pedagogic approaches for high-achieving, pre-degree pathway program students at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
The question under discussion in the academic language classroom is the extent to which dynamic cohorts of multi-lingual, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary students are being enabled to fulfill individual learning goals as well as the institution’s expectations of pathway learners and academic language users. Wingate (2015) argues that in the absence of an epistemological and socioculturally embedded literacy instruction, students are not equitably prepared for success in the discipline or the wider institution. The chapter reviews critiques of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and Academic Literacies by addressing “the best of both worlds” (Wingate & Tribble, 2012, p. 492) approach.
The chapter continues with a case study into the Academic Vocabulary in Literacy strand of the Foundation EAP course on the International Foundation Programme at Edinburgh University. There then follows close analysis of innovation by course designers to adapt the “best of both traditions” model (Wingate & Tribble, 2014, p. 2) into an integrated academic language and literacy approach. It is posited that this approach could enable attempts at transition for high-achieving foundation students by experiencing language in dynamic and multi-modal genres.

Abstract
Purpose
This is a benchmarking study and the purpose of this paper is to investigate if there is any association between operational efficiency in the integrated water management industry in Italy and the typology of service providers, and as a consequence, the nature of concession contract.
Design/methodology/approach
The study is focussed on 38 optimal territorial areas (ATOs), e.g. a circumscribed geographical area where the provision of integrated water services is considered efficient. It uses Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to calculate ATO efficiency and a stepwise regression procedure performed to investigate the effect of contract type on the operational efficiency rate of the ATO.
Findings
This study shows that there are some inefficiencies in the water service supply industry in Italy. The estimated average pure technical and scale efficiency of ATOs are 92.62 and 93.91 percent, respectively, while the average technical efficiency is 87.61 percent and the lowest is slightly higher than 13 percent. Operational inefficiencies might not be determined by size only. In fact, results show that the water service provider and contract agreement typologies are associated with efficiency. In particular, operational efficiency is higher in those ATOs where the water service supply concession contracts that fit the schemes of the new legislative framework prevail or where the service is mostly provided by a private equity owned or by mixed public-private companies.
Research limitations/implications
It was assumed that any incremental level of water quality beyond the minimum acceptable threshold as required by law is not important to increase the operation efficiency score; henceforth, no variables measuring the water quality were introduced in the DEA model. The result of the study may be not fully representative of the Italian water service sector, because the unavailability of accurate and consistent public databank in Italy did not allowed to have a larger sample.
Practical implications
This paper is one of the first in Italy to investigate the association between the operational efficiency of the ATOs and the nature of water service providers and contract agreements used.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the options for additive rapid prototyping methods in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology. Additive rapid prototyping technologies, such as stereolithography (SLA), fused deposition modeling (FDM) and selective laser sintering (SLS), all commonly known as three-dimensional (3D) printing methods, are reviewed and compared with the resolution requirements of the traditional MEMS fabrication methods.
Design/methodology/approach
In the 3D print approach, the entire assembly, parts and prototypes are built using various plastic and metal materials directly from the software file input, completely bypassing any additional processing steps. The review highlights their potential place in the overall process flow to reduce the complexity of traditional microfabrication and long processing cycles needed to test multiple prototypes before the final design is set.
Findings
Additive manufacturing (AM) is a promising manufacturing technique in micro-device technology.
Practical implications
In the current state of 3D printing, microfluidic and lab-on-a-chip devices for fluid handling and manipulation appear to be the most compatible with the 3D print methods, given their fairly coarse minimum feature size of 50-500 μm. Future directions in the 3D materials and method development are identified, such as adhesion and material compatibility studies of the 3D print materials, wafer-level printing and conductive materials development. One of the most important goals should be the drive toward finer resolution and layer thickness (1-10 μm) to stimulate the use of the 3D printing in a wider array of MEMS devices.
Originality/value
The review combines two discrete disciplines, microfabrication and AM, and shows how microfabrication and micro-device commercialization may benefit from employing methods developed by the AM community.

Manufacturing strategy has attracted serious research attention in the recent past. In this paper, an attempt is made to review the status of literature in manufacturing strategy. A literature classification scheme is suggested. A total of 260 articles from 31 referred journals and international conferences are classified into content (manufacturing capabilities, strategic choices, best practices, trans‐national comparison, literature survey, and performance measurement) and process‐related issues. We have categorized the methodology used in the literature into conceptual, descriptive, empirical, exploratory cross‐sectional and exploratory longitudinal approaches. Based on this, some possible research issues are also identified, viz., resource‐based operations strategy, sector specific manufacturing strategy, relevance of manufacturing strategy to small and medium enterprises, manufacturing strategy in the context of green manufacturing, effect of organizational culture on formulation of manufacturing strategy, and performance measurement.

Abstract
Purpose
As a result of the deregulations in the power system networks, diverse beneficial operations have been competing to optimize their operational costs and improve the consistency of their electrical infrastructure. Having certain and comprehensive state assessment of the electrical equipment helps the assortment of the suitable maintenance plan. Hence, the insulation condition monitoring and diagnostic techniques for the reliable and economic transformers are necessary to accomplish a comprehensive and proficient transformer condition assessment.
Design/methodology/approach
The main intent of this paper is to develop a new prediction model for the aging assessment of power transformer insulation oil. The data pertaining to power transformer insulation oil have been already collected using 20 working power transformers of 16-20 MVA operated at various substations in Punjab, India. It includes various parameters associated with the transformer such as breakdown voltage, moisture, resistivity, tan δ, interfacial tension and flashpoint. These data are given as input for predicting the age of the insulation oil. The proposed aging assessment model deploys a hybrid classifier model by merging the neural network (NN) and deep belief network (DBN). As the main contribution of this paper, the training algorithm of both NN and DBN is replaced by the modified lion algorithm (LA) named as a randomly modified lion algorithm (RM-LA) to reduce the error difference between the predicted and actual outcomes. Finally, the comparative analysis of different prediction models with respect to error measures proves the efficiency of the proposed model.
Findings
For the Transformer 2, root mean square error (RMSE) of the developed RM-LA-NN + DBN was 83.2, 92.5, 40.4, 57.4, 93.9 and 72 per cent improved than NN + DBN, PSO, FF, CSA, PS-CSA and LA-NN + DBN, respectively. Moreover, the RMSE of the suggested RM-LA-NN + DBN was 97.4 per cent superior to DBN + NN, 96.9 per cent superior to PSO, 81.4 per cent superior to FF, 93.2 per cent superior to CSA, 49.6 per cent superior to PS-CSA and 36.6 per cent superior to LA-based NN + DBN, respectively, for the Transformer 13.
Originality/value
This paper presents a new model for the aging assessment of transformer insulation oil using RM-LA-based DBN + NN. This is the first work uses RM-LA-based optimization for aging assessment in power transformation insulation oil.
