Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose a semiempirical and semitheoretical cyclic compaction constitutive model of coarse-grained soil filler for the high-speed railway (HSR) subgrade under cyclic load.

Design/methodology/approach

According to the basic framework of critical state soil mechanics and in view of the characteristics of the coarse-grained soil filler for the HSR subgrade to bear the train vibration load repeatedly for a long time, the hyperbolic empirical relationship between particle breakage and plastic work was derived. Considering the influence of cyclic vibration time and stress ratio, the particle breakage correction function of coarse-grained soil filler for the HSR subgrade under cyclic load was proposed. According to the classical theory of plastic mechanics, the shearing dilatation equation of the coarse-grained soil filler for the HSR subgrade considering particle breakage was modified and obtained. A semiempirical and semitheoretical cyclic compaction constitutive model of coarse-grained soil filler for the HSR subgrade under cyclic load was further established. The backward Euler method was used to discretize the constitutive equation, build a numerical algorithm of “elastic prediction and plastic modification” and make a secondary development of the program to solve the cyclic compaction model.

Findings

Through the comparison with the result of laboratory triaxial test under the cyclic loading of coarse-grained soil filler for the HSR subgrade, the accuracy and applicability of the cyclic compaction model were verified. Results show that the model can accurately predict the cumulative deformation characteristics of coarse-grained soil filler for the HSR subgrade under the train vibration loading repeatedly for a long time. It considers the effects of particle breakage and stress ratio, which can be used to calculate and analyze the stress and deformation evolution law of the subgrade structure for HSR.

Originality/value

The research can provide a simple and practical method for calculating deformation of railway under cyclic loading.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop two empirical models that predict the shear strength of exterior beam-column joints exposed to monotonic and cyclic loading using Gene expression programming (GEP).

Design/methodology/approach

The GEP model developed for the monotonic loading case is trained and validated using 81 data test points and that for cyclic loading case is trained and validated using 159 data test points that collected from different 9 and 39 experimental programs, respectively. The parameters that are selected to develop the cyclic GEP model are concrete compressive strength, joint aspect ratio, column axial load and joint transverse reinforcement. The monotonic GEP model is developed using concrete compressive strength, column depth, joint width and column axial load.

Findings

GEP models are proposed in this paper to predict the joint shear strength of beam-column joints under cyclic and monotonic loading. The predicted results obtained using the GEP models are compared to those calculated using the ACI-352 code formulations. A sensitivity analysis is also performed to further validate the GEP models.

Originality/value

The proposed GEP models provide an accurate prediction for joint shear strength of beam-column joints under cyclic and monotonic loading that is more fitting to the experimental database than the ACI-352 predictions where the GEP models have higher R2 value than the code formulations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to deal with the FE analysis of strain constraint around the crack tip under cyclic loading and its utilization using crack growth prediction strip yield model (SYM). During cycling, the constraint develops based on the load history. The monotonic loading is analyzed mostly, but during cyclic loading the conditions are different. The constraint is analyzed after several loading cycles applied in upwards part of the cycle and the formula for its development is proposed.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on the 3D FE analysis of middle-cracked tension specimen M(T). The strain constraint is described by Newman’s factor α. The variability of constraint factor α was analyzed for several load levels and specimen thicknesses. The crack is considered as non-propagating with straight crack front. The material is modelled as elastic-perfectly plastic. The SYM is modified by implementing variable constraint and the experimental results are compared with the simulation.

Findings

In major part of the loading cycle, it was found by FE analysis, that the constraint factor αg is lower after overloads than when creating monotonic plastic deformation on the same load level. The value of αg is governed by the ratio of thickness B over the plastic zone size rp. By implementing the variable constraint factor into the SYM, the improvement of the predicted specimens lives under variable amplitude loading was shown.

Originality/value

The new phenomenon on the variability of strain constraint during cyclic loading is presented. The development of constraint factor αg during cyclic loading is different from the monotonic loading and should be accordingly implemented into prediction models.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to understand the multiaxial fretting fatigue, wear and fracture characteristics of 35CrMoA steel under the elliptical loading path.

Design/methodology/approach

By keeping the contact pressure and torsional shear cyclic stress amplitude unchanged; the axial cyclic stress amplitude varied from 650 MPa to 850 MPa. The fretting fatigue test was carried out on MTS809 testing machine, and the axial cyclic strain response and fatigue life of the material were analyzed. The fretting zone and fracture surface morphology were observed by scanning electron microscope. The composition of wear debris was detected by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer.

Findings

In this study, with the increase of axial stress amplitude, 35CrMoA steel will be continuously softened, and the cyclic softening degree increases. The fretting fatigue life decreases unevenly. The fretting scars in the stick region are elongated in the axial direction. The area of fracture crack propagation zone decreases. In addition, the results indicate that wear debris in the slip region is spherical and has higher oxygen content.

Originality/value

There were few literatures about the multiaxial fretting fatigue behavior of 35CrMoA steel, and most scholars focused on the contact pressure. This paper reveals the effect of axial cyclic stress on fretting fatigue and wear of 35CrMoA steel under the elliptical loading path.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the mechanical behaviour of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V under cyclic loading. Using as-built selective laser melting (SLM) Ti-6Al-4V in engineering applications requires a detailed understanding of its elastoplastic behaviour. This preliminary study intends to create a better understanding on the cyclic plasticity phenomena exhibited by this material under symmetric and asymmetric strain-controlled cyclic loading.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper investigates experimentally the cyclic elastoplastic behaviour of as-built SLM Ti-6Al-4V under symmetric and asymmetric strain-controlled loading histories and compares it to that of wrought Ti-6Al-4V. Moreover, a plasticity model has been customised to simulate effectively the mechanical behaviour of the as-built SLM Ti-6Al-4V. This model is formulated to account for the SLM Ti-6Al-4V-specific characteristics, under the strain-controlled experiments.

Findings

The elastoplastic behaviour of the as-built SLM Ti-6Al-4V has been compared to that of the wrought material, enabling characterisation of the cyclic transient phenomena under symmetric and asymmetric strain-controlled loadings. The test results have identified a difference in the strain-controlled cyclic phenomena in the as-build SLM Ti-6Al-4V when compared to its wrought counterpart, because of a difference in their microstructure. The plasticity model offers accurate simulation of the observed experimental behaviour in the SLM material.

Research limitations/implications

Further investigation through a more extensive test campaign involving a wider set of strain-controlled loading cases, including multiaxial (biaxial) histories, is required for a more complete characterisation of the material performance.

Originality/value

The present investigation offers an advancement in the knowledge of cyclic transient effects exhibited by a typical α’ martensite SLM Ti-6Al-4V under symmetric and asymmetric strain-controlled tests. The research data and findings reported are among the very few reported so far in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explain the characterization of cyclic behavior of a tube made of functionally graded material (FGM) under different combinations of internal pressure and cyclic through-thickness temperature gradients.

Design/methodology/approach

The normality rule, nonlinear kinematic hardening Chaboche model and Von Mises yield criterion were used to model the constitutive behavior of an FG tube in the incremental form. The material properties and hardening parameters of the Chaboche model vary according to the power-law function in the radial direction. The backward Euler integration scheme combined with return mapping algorithm which relies on the solution of a nonlinear equation performs the numerical procedure. The algorithm is implemented within the user subroutine UMAT in ABAQUS/standard.

Findings

The published works on FG components considering only the mechanical and physical properties as a function of spatial coordinate and nonlinear kinematic hardening parameters have not been considered to be changed continuously from one surface to another. Motivated by this, the present paper has deliberately been targeted to tackle this kind of problem to simulate the cyclic behavior of an FG tube as accurately as possible. In addition, to classify various behaviors the FG tube under cyclic thermomechanical loadings, Bree’s interaction diagram as an essential tool in designing of the FG pressure vessels in many engineering sectors is presented.

Originality/value

Provides a detailed description of the FG parameters of Chaboche kinematic hardening parameters in the adopted constitutive equations. In this paper, the significant effects of internal pressure values, kinematic hardening models and also FG inhomogeneity index related to the hardening rule parameters on plastic deformation of the FG tube are illustrated. Finally, the various cyclic behaviors of the FG tube under different combinations of thermomechanical loading are fully explored.

Abstract

A general overview is presented on applications of the discrete element method (DEM) to granular media. A literature survey is performed of static and dynamic simulations using random arrays of compliant particles, and forty‐two references published mostly in the last ten years are identified and categorized according to a number of relevant criteria. It is concluded that the interest in the use of the technique is rapidly increasing in the research and engineering community, with applications concentrated in soil mechanics, rock mechanics, grain flow and engineering problems. Additional studies and verifications of some numerical aspects of the DEM technique are suggested including parametric studies and comparisons. Program CONBAL‐2 (CONTACT + TRUBAL in 2D) developed by the authors based on TRUBAL created by Strack and Cundall, is described. CONBAL‐2 uses the complete Mindlin solution for the contact between two spheres and thus can be used for small strain and cyclic loading. The program is applied to study the cyclic response of uniform, medium dense to dense rounded quartz sand. Cyclic strain‐controlled loading at constant volume is applied to isotropically consolidated, random arrays of 531 spheres, using cyclic strains ranging from 10–4% to 10–1%. The calculated shear modulus, Gmax, constrained modulus, D, and Poisson's ratio at small strains are correlated with the confining pressure, the porosity of the array, and the coordination number. The calculated variations of secant modulus and damping ratio with cyclic strain compare favourably with the experimental results on sands compiled by Seed and Idriss. Finally, ‘pore water pressure buildup’ and cyclic stiffness degradation of the material with number of cycles is calculated at a cyclic strain of 10–1%, and the prediction is found to represent closely cyclic undrained experiments on sands. The existence of a threshold strain, yt ≈ 10–2%, found experimentally, is also predicted by the simulations.

Abstract

Purpose

Earthquake tremors not only increase the chances of fire ignition but also hinder the fire-fighting efforts due to the damage to the lifelines of a city. Most of the international codes have independent recommendations for structural safety against earthquake and fire. However, the possibility of a multi-hazard event, such as fire following an earthquake is seldom addressed.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents an experimental study of Reinforced Concrete (RC) columns in post-earthquake fire (PEF) conditions. An experimental approach is proposed that allows the testing of a column instead of a full structural frame. This approach allows us to control the loading and boundary conditions individually and facilitates the testing under a variety of these conditions. Also, it allows the structure to be tested until failure. The role of parameters, such as earthquake intensity, axial load ratio and the ductile detailing of the column on the earthquake damage and subsequently the fire performance of the structure, is studied in this research. Six RC column specimens are tested under a sequence of quasi-static earthquake loading, followed by combined fire and axial compression loading conditions.

Findings

The experiment results indicate that ductile detailed columns subjected to 4% or less lateral drift did not lose significant load-carrying capacity in fire conditions. A lateral drift of 6% caused significant damage to the columns and reduced the load-carrying capacity in fire conditions. The level of the axial load acting on the column at the time of earthquake loading was found to have a very significant effect on the extent of damage and reduction in column load capacity in fire conditions. The columns that were not detailed for a ductile behavior observed a more significant reduction in axial load carrying capacity in fire conditions.

Research limitations/implications

This study is limited to columns of 230 mm size due to the limitations of the test setup. The applicability of these findings to larger column sections needs to be verified by developing a numerical analysis methodology and simulating other post-earthquake-fire tests available in the literature.

Originality/value

The experimental procedure proposed in this paper offers an alternative to the testing of a complete structural frame system for PEF behavior. In addition to the ease of conducting the tests, the procedure also allows much better control over the heating, structural loading and boundary conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary purpose of this research was to expand the knowledge base regarding the behavior of steel columns during exposure to fire. This paper presents the numerical study of the effect of heat on the performance of parking steel column in a seven-story steel building under cyclic loading.

Design/methodology/approach

In this research, the forces and deformations developed during a fire are estimated by using detailed 3D finite-element models. The analyses are in the form of a coupled thermo-mechanical analysis in two types of loading: concurrent loading (fire and cyclic loading) and non-concurrent loading (first fire and then cyclically), and the analyses have been conducted in both states of the fire loading with cooling and without cooling using the ABAQUS software. Further, it was investigated whether, during the fire loading, the specimen was protected by a 3-cm-thick concrete coating and how much it changes the seismic performance. After verification of the specimen with the experimental test results, the column model was investigated under different loading conditions.

Findings

The result of analyses indicates that the effect of thermal damage on the performance of steel columns, when cooling is happening late, is more than the state in which cooling occurs immediately after the fire. In this paper, thermal–seismic performance of parking steel columns has been specified and the effect of the fire damage has been investigated for the protected steel by concrete coating and to the non-protected steel, under both cooling and non-cooling states.

Originality/value

This study led to recommendations based on the findings and suggestions for additional work to support performance-based fire engineering. It is clear that predicting force and deformation on steel column during fire is complex and it is affected by many variables. Here in this paper, those variables are examined and proper results have been achieved.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the behavior of compressive residual stress induced by laser peening under external loading on an age‐hardened high‐strength aluminum alloy A2024‐T3, a low‐carbon austenitic stainless steel SUS316L (Type 316L) and a nickel‐based alloy NCF600 (Alloy 600).

Design/methodology/approach

The surface residual stress was measured intermittently by X‐ray diffraction during cyclic uniaxial loading.

Findings

The compressive residual stress due to laser peening significantly decreased during the first few cycles at stress ratio of 0.1 with the maximum loading stress exceeding the 0.2 per cent yield stress. No remarkable decrease was observed afterward until the end of the loading cycles.

Originality/value

Under symmetric loading at the stress ratio of −1 to A2024‐T3, a major decrease took place in the compression side of the first loading cycle. The surface residual stresses remained in compression within all the extent of the present experiments, even if the maximum loading stress exceeded the yield stress of the materials.
