Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the curling behaviour of selective laser sintered polyamide/glass bead composites with changes in material compositions, part bed temperature, powder base thickness, laser power and layer cooling time.

Design/methodology/approach

The Taguchi parameter design method (design of experiments, DOE) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique were applied in the investigation to determine the optimal process parameter settings.

Findings

The results of statistical analysis and ANOVA provided evidence for the effectiveness of filler content and its surface treatment on reducing the amount of curling.

Research limitations/implications

Warping and curling phenomena is one of several aspects of this work that can be pursued further. The present investigation could be expanded to explore other fillers and interface adhesion using other modifiers. Experiments could be conducted with other complicated geometries, various sizes, different positions and locations to widen the knowledge base of geometric accuracy of selective laser sintering process.

Practical implications

This experimental work is beneficial for materials development and accuracy characterisation in rapid manufacturing techniques. The experimental techniques adopted are readily transferable to virtually any material system used in rapid manufacturing.

Originality/value

Although many materials have been developed, there is still a need for research into new materials. This work demonstrates that it is possible to improve the geometric accuracy of selective laser sintered components from glass bead- filled polyamide 12 and achieve near-zero curling by adding rigid multiphase-coated particle to the material system.

THE phenomenon of curling of systems comprising colloids such as cellulose nitrate, deposited on non‐rigid substrates such as paper or fabric, has been known for nearly a century. There is, however, no indication in the literature of any attempt to correlate this behaviour with, for example, the phenomenon of the bending of plates. The present investigation presents certain analogies, which enable us to interpret much of the behaviour of these colloid systems on substrates.

Abstract

Purpose

Knitted fabrics containing elastane provide high level of comfort and ease of usage because of the elastic and drape properties over the body. Knitted fabrics respond to every movement of the body and return back to its original shape easily so they are used widely for apparel production. The most important properties required from the elastic knitted garments are wear comfort, fit, breathability and durability. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the effect of elastane yarn count and ground yarn count on the performance properties of 12 single jersey knitted fabrics were analysed after dying.

Design/methodology/approach

The research design for this study consists an experimental study. In all, 12 fabrics containing half plating and full plating elastane were produced using 30/1-40/1 Ne yarn counts. Bursting strength, stretch recovery, residual extension, air permeability, spirality and drape properties of fabrics were evaluated.

Findings

As a result of study it was found a certain effect as the elastane amount and count changed. For all types of knitted fabrics, bursting strength values increased and fabric spirality values decreased as the elastane amount and elastane yarn count increased. Also it was found a significant relationship between elastane amount and count with air permeability, spirality, bursting strength and drape.

Originality/value

As a result of the literature review, it was seen that the effects of elastane amount, elastane yarn count and fabric yarn count on the performance properties of knitted fabrics has not been studied broadly.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide a selective bibliography for researchers working with bulk material forming (specifically the forging, rolling, extrusion and drawing processes) with sources which can help them to be up‐to‐date.

Design/methodology/approach

A range of published (1996‐2005) works, which aims to provide theoretical as well as practical information on the material processing namely bulk material forming. Bulk deformation processes used in practice change the shape of the workpiece by plastic deformations under forces applied by tools and dies.

Findings

Provides information about each source, indicating what can be found there. Listed references contain journal papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations on the subject.

Research limitations/implications

It is an exhaustive list of papers (1,693 references are listed) but some papers may be omitted. The emphasis is to present papers written in English language. Sheet material forming processes are not included.

Practical implications

A very useful source of information for theoretical and practical researchers in computational material forming as well as in academia or for those who have recently obtained a position in this field.

Originality/value

There are not many bibliographies published in this field of engineering. This paper offers help to experts and individuals interested in computational analyses and simulations of material forming processes.

Abstract

Gives a brief overview of post‐processing of selective laser sintered (SLS) metal parts to improve structural integrity and/or to induce a material transformation. Presents results which show the effect of post‐processing liquid phase sintering temperature and time on material properties. Describes the hot isostatic pressing process, and discusses its application to SLS metal parts. Results gained from using this process show that it is suitable for achieving almost full‐density parts.

Abstract

Stereolithography (SLA) is one of the most important techniques used in rapid prototyping processes. It has a great industrial interest because it allows for dramatic time savings with respect to traditional manufacturing processes. One of the main sources of error in the final dimensions of the prototype is the curl distortion effect owing to the shrinkage of the resin during the SLA process. Presents a study of the influence of different constructive and numerical parameters in the curl distortion, an analysis which was made using the computer code stereolithography analysis program, developed to model SLA processes using the finite element method. Also briefly presents this code.

Abstract

Purpose

This article presents a novel case study that analyzes the applicability of DoE in the curling sport in order to improve their own performance and the performance of its athletes. Specifically, this study analyzes the most important factors to increase accuracy and precision in the draw game with curlers' opinions. It was decided to use the “Last Stone Draw (LSD)’ as an appropriate play situation.

Design/methodology/approach

Specifically, this study analyzes most important factors to increase accuracy and precision in the draw game with curlers opinions from the German Curling association. Three research techniques were used in this study: case study, interviews and a well-designed experiment. The analysis through the use of DoE includes a measurement system analysis, an initial variance test between two players, a screening and a characterization experiment.

Findings

The results obtained from DoE suggest that the factors routine, stress, release, balance, and the previous play situation have a substantial impact on the score of the player's draw game. However, no factor has a statistically significant impact on the average distance to the center of the target. Moreover, the DoE analysis also concludes that the accuracy and precision of the player's performance is not affected equally by all analyzed factors, but they turn into highly significant when examining their relationship to the other factors.

Practical implications

The findings of this study can be beneficial to other sports events in improving the performance. Moreover, DoE has proved to be an invaluable tool for many people in the German Curling Association in understanding the factors which influence the curlers performance and also factors which do not affect the curlers performance.

Originality/value

This research attempts to contribute to the existing sports management literature by identifying a way in which DoE can be an effective tool in non-manufacturing settings for identification of most important factors which influence the curling performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore how vulnerable healthcare consumers foster social support through visual storytelling in social media in navigating healthcare consumption experiences.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs a dual qualitative approach of visual and textual analysis of 180 Instagram posts from female breast cancer patients and survivors who use the platform to narrate their healthcare consumption experiences.

Findings

This study demonstrates how visual storytelling on social media normalises hidden aspects of healthcare consumption experiences through healthcare disclosures (procedural, corporeal, recovery), normalising practices (providing learning resources, cohering the illness experience, problematising mainstream recovery narratives) and enabling digital affordances, which in turn facilitates social support among vulnerable healthcare consumers.

Practical implications

This study highlights the potential for visual storytelling on social media to address shortcomings in the healthcare service system and contribute to societal well-being through co-creative efforts that offer real-time and customised support for vulnerable healthcare consumers.

Social implications

This research highlights that visual storytelling on image-based social media offers transformative possibilities for vulnerable healthcare consumers seeking social support in negotiating the challenges of their healthcare consumption experiences.

Originality/value

This study presents a framework of visual storytelling for vulnerable healthcare consumers on image-based social media. Our paper offers three key contributions: that visual storytelling fosters informational and companionship social support for vulnerable healthcare consumers; recognising this occurs through normalising hidden healthcare consumption experiences; and identifying healthcare disclosures, normalising practices and enabling digital affordances as fundamental to this process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to mitigate the dimensional inaccuracy due to vertical curling/bending deformation of three-dimensional (3D) printed parts produced by selective laser sintering (SLS) using PA12 based on dimensional compensation of the computer-aided design (CAD) model.

Design/methodology/approach

To carry out this study, specially designed features are initially produced as references, and the dimensional deviations from the vertical bending deformation of the SLS process are analyzed. Next, the deformation patterns are formulated using a polynomial regression model in the global Cartesian coordinates of the building platform. Then, the compensation algorithm is implemented and the original 3D CAD file is preprocessed with an inverse transformation of the features to compensate the deformation errors.

Findings

It was found that the 3D printed parts from the SLS process have the dimensional inaccuracy due to the vertical bending pattern of the quadratic form. By implementing the compensation algorithm, it was statistically shown to effectively reduce bending deformations of various sample parts, including the automotive components, in SLS.

Research limitations/implications

The position of samples in a batch has a direct impact on not only bending deformation but also on horizontal shape geometry error. However, the application of this algorithm is focused on the vertical bending deformation, which is estimated as a major part of dimensional inaccuracy.

Practical implications

This paper provides a practical case study with a real vehicle part. The algorithm was shown to provide a more realistic solution to the dimensional deformation of printed products, which is not manageable by simply using the constant scale factors provided by SLS 3D printer manufacturers.

Originality/value

This paper suggests that the vertical bending deformation from SLS’s 3D printed complex parts can be improved through the proposed compensation algorithm. The compensation algorithm was constructed by using the predictive regression model created from the bending deformation patterns of reference samples. The proposed compensation algorithm can be further used and applied for other complex samples without making additional reference parts.

Abstract

Purpose

To produce a coated fabric, a base fabric may be completely or partially coated with a polymer layer, which changes the properties of the new system relative to the base fabric. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the influence of the thermal transfer material and its shape on the deformability of knitted fabrics during the uniaxial extension and to determine the residual deformation of the thermoplastic transfer element of coated fabrics after unloading.

Design/methodology/approach

Knitted fabrics were partially and entirely coated with heat transfer material. For partial coating, square pieces of three different transfer materials were bonded on the middle of the specimen. They were solid, perforated with either nine circular holes or six rectangular holes. A heat seal press was used to laminate knitted fabrics. The samples were subjected to uniaxial tensile testing. The characteristics such as strain at maximum force, strain at break, and strain at low stress were measured. After stretching and relaxation of the specimens, the residual deformation of the heat transfer element was also investigated.

Findings

The results indicated that coating knitted fabrics with transfer material may decrease their stretchability. The experiments show that the decrease in stretchability and in the degree of residual deformation after stretching and relaxing depend on the knitted structure, the shape of the transfer element, and the degree to which the fabric is coated.

Originality/value

This study examines the influence of heat transfer material which may be not only entirely but also partially joined with knitted fabric layer on the deformability and shape stability of this system.
