Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the influence of post-curing temperature, post-curing time and gamma ray irradiation dose upon the tensile and compressive mechanical properties of the medical graded vat photopolymerization parts.

Design/methodology/approach

Medical graded vat photopolymerization specimens, made from photopolymer resin, were fabricated using bottom-up vat photopolymerization machine. Tensile and compressive tests were conducted to assess the mechanical properties. The specimens were categorized into uncured and post-curing groups. Temperature post-processing and/or gamma irradiation exposure were for post-curing specimens. The post-curing parameters considered included temperature levels of 50°C, 60°C and 70°C, with 1, 2, 3 and 4 h periods. For the gamma irradiation, the exposure doses were 25, 50, 75 and 100 kGy.

Findings

Post-curing improved the mechanical properties of medical graded vat photopolymerization parts for both tensile and compressive specimens. Post-curing temperature greater than 50°C or a prolonged post-curing period of more than 1 h made insignificant changes or deterioration in mechanical properties. The optimal post-curing condition was therefore a 50°C post-curing temperature with 1 h post-curing time. Exposure to gamma ray improved the compressive mechanical properties, but deteriorated tensile mechanical properties. Higher gamma irradiation doses could decrease the mechanical properties and also make the part more brittle, especially for doses more than 25 kGy.

Originality/value

The obtained results would be beneficial to the medical device manufacturer who fabricated the invasive temporary contact personalized surgical instruments by vat photopolymerization technique. In addition, it also raised awareness in excessive gamma sterilization in the medical graded vat photopolymerization parts.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a highly accessible and affordable tracking model for earthmoving operations in an attempt to overcome some of the limitations of current tracking models.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed methodology involves four main processes: acquiring onsite terrestrial images, processing the images into 3D scaled cloud data, extracting volumetric measurements and crew productivity estimations from multiple point clouds using Delaunay triangulation and conducting earned value/schedule analysis and forecasting the remaining scope of work based on the estimated performance. For validation, the tracking model was compared with an observation-based tracking approach for a backfilling site. It was also used for tracking a coarse base aggregate inventory for a road construction project.

Findings

The presented model has proved to be a practical and accurate tracking approach that algorithmically estimates and forecasts all performance parameters from the captured data.

Originality/value

The proposed model is unique in extracting accurate volumetric measurements directly from multiple point clouds in a developed code using Delaunay triangulation instead of extracting them from textured models in modelling software which is neither automated nor time-effective. Furthermore, the presented model uses a self-calibration approach aiming to eliminate the pre-calibration procedure required before image capturing for each camera intended to be used. Thus, any worker onsite can directly capture the required images with an easily accessible camera (e.g. handheld camera or a smartphone) and can be sent to any processing device via e-mail, cloud-based storage or any communication application (e.g. WhatsApp).

Abstract

Purpose

The metaverse development is in the early stages in most organizations and supply chains. There has been exponential growth in metaverse investments by leading tech and other types of companies and governments worldwide. This article aims to shed light on the topic by providing detailed insights for the operations and supply chain management (O&SCM) community concerning the potential, opportunities and challenges associated with the metaverse.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors mapped 15 benefits and 15 challenges regarding metaverse in O&SCM-related fields from the literature, which in turn were empirically tested by a panel with 150 experts from more than 12 countries, from operations and supply chains and with experience in metaverse technologies.

Findings

The authors found notable similarities and differences between metaverse adopters and non-adopters in the O&SCM. Accordingly, some benefits and challenges are expected before and after the implementation, but it's still relevant. In contrast, there are ones that change their importance after the implementation.

Research limitations/implications

First, this paper points out the need for an urgent call for action to develop high-quality research on the interplay between metaverse and O&SCM. Second, the metaverse will reshape several established business models by offering new products and services, consequently resulting in the remodeling of O&SCM. Third, our paper provides a call for action to engage the community of scholars and practitioners to consider the metaverse as one of the last frontiers of O&SCM in the digital age.

Originality/value

This paper is one of the first that investigates the metaverse benefits, challenges and expectations in the O&SCM. Also, it provides robust directions by an empirical approach to the metaverse as a new and important research stream for O&SCM and related fields. The authors provide a prospective research agenda that scholars and practitioners could use as a roadmap to capture metaverse opportunities in O&SCM.

Abstract

Purpose

Weak repeatability is observed in handcrafted keypoints, leading to tracking failures in visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) systems under challenging scenarios such as illumination change, rapid rotation and large angle of view variation. In contrast, learning-based keypoints exhibit higher repetition but entail considerable computational costs. This paper proposes an innovative algorithm for keypoint extraction, aiming to strike an equilibrium between precision and efficiency. This paper aims to attain accurate, robust and versatile visual localization in scenes of formidable complexity.

Design/methodology/approach

SiLK-SLAM initially refines the cutting-edge learning-based extractor, SiLK, and introduces an innovative postprocessing algorithm for keypoint homogenization and operational efficiency. Furthermore, SiLK-SLAM devises a reliable relocalization strategy called PCPnP, leveraging progressive and consistent sampling, thereby bolstering its robustness.

Findings

Empirical evaluations conducted on TUM, KITTI and EuRoC data sets substantiate SiLK-SLAM’s superior localization accuracy compared to ORB-SLAM3 and other methods. Compared to ORB-SLAM3, SiLK-SLAM demonstrates an enhancement in localization accuracy even by 70.99%, 87.20% and 85.27% across the three data sets. The relocalization experiments demonstrate SiLK-SLAM’s capability in producing precise and repeatable keypoints, showcasing its robustness in challenging environments.

Originality/value

The SiLK-SLAM achieves exceedingly elevated localization accuracy and resilience in formidable scenarios, holding paramount importance in enhancing the autonomy of robots navigating intricate environments. Code is available at https://github.com/Pepper-FlavoredChewingGum/SiLK-SLAM.

Abstract

Purpose

Public libraries have been making various efforts and innovations to adapt to changes. The purpose of this study is to analyze type of library innovation based on the innovation’s subject.

Design/methodology/approach

The data was collected by identifying the information in regard to the innovation uploaded on the library website. A total of 548 public library websites have been identified, and 1,567 library innovations data have been collected.

Findings

The innovations that have been made and carried out are divided into seven subject categories: inclusion-based innovation, information source innovation, innovation, cooperation, innovation in information services, innovation in library management, innovation with the use of technology. The consequences of innovation in public libraries include increased performance, community empowerment, increased accessibility of information, increased public literacy and external support.

Research limitations/implications

This research only focuses on one type of library, namely, all public libraries in Indonesia. The findings of this study are based on library innovation data taken from the public library website, so that library innovations that are not uploaded to the website are not included in this study.

Originality/value

The impact of the innovations that have been implemented is not only in improving the performance of the library but also the surrounding community. Public libraries must continue to innovate because of the amount that can be obtained for the progress of society, nation and state.
