Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relevance of intellectual capital (IC) as a strategic resource and source of regional value creation dynamics. Adopting a knowledge‐based approach, the authors aim to argue that knowledge assets represent the IC's components, and the Knoware Tree and the Knoware Dashboard are proposed as frameworks to assess the IC within regions. For the global assessment of the IC, the Regional Intellectual Capital Index (RICI) is to be introduced and its application is proposed for the assessment of the IC within Italian regions. Finally, in order to explore the links between the IC ownership of a region and its value creation dynamics, the Value Creation Index (VCI) is adopted and linear correlations of the RICI and VCI are performed, providing first empirical evidences of the positive links between IC and value creation.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper integrates the results of an intensive literature review with a longitudinal empirical research applied to Italian regions.

Findings

The paper provides a knowledge‐based understanding of the IC, highlighting the existence of a positive correlation between IC and value creation of the Italian regions.

Research limitations/implications

The adoption of linear correlation for analysing the empirical data set could be considered as a research limitation, since more rigorous statistical approaches, such as the robust canonical analysis and the structural equation modelling could be adopted.

Practical implications

The paper provides a methodology for assessing IC within regions.

Originality/value

The proposed frameworks for assessing IC within regions are original as well as the empirical results showing a positive links between IC ownership and value creation.

Abstract

Purpose

Rural regions have rarely been the topic of inquiry in economic development studies or research related to knowledge management. Most studies on knowledge management have focused on high‐tech regions. The purpose of this paper is to present a case which illustrates the mechanism and factors of learning regions with knowledge‐based development engaged in growing agricultural activities such as organic agriculture.

Design/methodology approach

The paper is a case study of a Mexican cooperative.

Findings

The case study illustrates how organic agriculture standards and the attractiveness of the market change the rural setting by promoting knowledge creation and application in the field. The results of such knowledge generation are endogenous growth practices for people who otherwise abandon agriculture as a means of living. Learning, innovating and networking are requirements and outcomes of following organic standards. Simultaneously, the creation of efficient institutions and the solidity of local governance are promoted within the region.

Research limitations/implications

This paper focuses on the description of the case rather than the theoretical features. This paper highlights characteristics and critical elements present in an agricultural success through the depiction of knowledge creation within a cooperative and surrounding community, that pose elements which consequently can be extended to promote regional development in other rural settings.

Originality/value

Characteristics of the organic industry place a region in a competitive position and encourage community involvement to coordinate, to learn, and to improve processes. The organic agriculture industry requires a knowledge foundation essential for meeting industry standards and, thus, requires organization of the community including farmers as well as local institutions.

This study aims to understand the values around which stakeholders of a place brand within a community can align.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to understand the values around which stakeholders of a place brand within a community can align.

Design/methodology/approach

A content analysis of websites provided a description of region brands. In-depth interview data from representatives of two communal region brands provide a foundation for investigating the attitudes and behaviors of 20 place brand managers depending on their value orientation.

Findings

Two categories of communal region brands are found, of which one reflects terminal values whereas the other is based on instrumental values. Instrumental values appear more efficient for promoting the place through stakeholders than terminal values.

Research limitations/implications

This exploratory research highlights some particularities of place brand communities and adds instrumental value to the classic terminal value identified within commercial brand communities.

Practical implications

Place brand managers gain insights into the values around which they can align stakeholders of their brand.

Originality/value

Brand community literature focuses mostly on specialty or convenience product-oriented communities. By investigating a place as a different type of “product”, this study demonstrates that place brands draw on communal arguments to function like master brands. Furthermore, terminal values can be replaced by more instrumental values in the context of place branding, because agreement on broad terminal values by individual members of the community is unlikely to be achieved whereas specific instrumental values can serve their individual interests.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role and the relevance of knowledge‐based capital as a strategic resource and a source of regional innovation capacity. The paper identifies human, relational, structural and social capital as the four main knowledge‐based categories building the knowledge‐based capital of a region. The role of each knowledge‐based category in determining regional innovation capacity is analyzed. Specifically, the authors discuss the relationships among the knowledge‐based categories and a regional innovation capacity.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on an in‐depth literature review of the knowledge management and regional innovation research stream. The fundamental underlying research questions that have driven the research are: “What are the knowledge‐based capital categories affecting a region's innovation capacity?” and “How do knowledge‐based categories influence regional innovation capacity?”. The paper is conceptual in its nature and aims to delineate a theory‐based framework to drive further empirical research.

Findings

The paper first clarifies the concept of knowledge‐based capital and of regional innovation capacity. These are two key concepts for understanding the role and relevance of the knowledge assets bundles in the creation, development and management of innovation capabilities at regional level. Then the paper explores how knowledge‐based components affect the innovation capacity of a region. This is an issue of great relevance for both theory and practice. From the theory point of view it allows the identification of the main factors characterising the links between knowledge assets and innovation capacity, while from a practical point of view it can provide implications for policy makers for the definition of policies oriented towards the development of regional knowledge asset domains to develop regional innovation capacity.

Originality/value

The paper provides an answer to the need to develop a holistic view of the links between a region's knowledge‐based capital and its innovation capacity. Indeed, most of the studies in the literature have analysed the links between isolated knowledge asset categories and innovation capabilities. The paper, on the basis of a clear definition of knowledge‐based capital and innovation capacity, analyses why regional knowledge foundations make differences in the innovation capacity of regions.

Abstract

This paper attempts to synthesise the theoretical research on entrepreneurship and social capital undertaken in previous studies, and presents a multi‐dimensional view of entrepreneurship. In examining overviews of past single perspective entrepreneurship research, this study shows that the primary role of entrepreneurs in organisation emergence is to acquire knowledge and create social capital properly. This process is necessarily accompanied by creation of knowledge communities to establish the domain consensus of new organisations among various stakeholders paying particular attention to the fragility and dysfunctional side of entrepreneurship and social capital. The paper concludes with a hypothesis and suggestions towards a future research agenda. It is hoped that, as a result of this theoretical development, this paper will help to focus greater attention on the concept of entrepreneurship in studies of management development.
