Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to deal with the study of interaction between multiple cracks in an aluminum alloy under static loading. Self-similar as well as non-self-similar crack growth has been observed which depends on the relative crack positions defined by crack offset distance and crack tip distance. On the basis of experimental observations, the conditions for crack coalescence, crack shielding, crack interaction, crack initiation, etc. are discussed with respect to crack position parameters. Considering crack tip distance, crack offset distance, crack size and crack inclination with loading axis as input parameter and crack initiation direction as output parameter, an artificial neural network (ANN) model is developed. The model results were then compared with the experimental results. It was observed that the model predicts the crack initiation direction under monotonic loading within a scatter band of ±0.5°.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on the experimental observations. Growth studies are made from the growth initiation from two cracks in a rectangular aluminium plate under static loading. The present study is focused on the influence of crack position defined by crack offset distance and crack tip distance on growth direction. In addition to this, ANN has been used to predict crack growth direction in multiple crack geometry under static loading. The predicted results have been compared with the experimental data.

Findings

The influence of the interaction between multiple cracks on crack extension angle greatly depends on the relative position of cracks defined by crack tip distance S, crack offset distance H and crack inclinations with respect to loading direction. The intensity of the crack interaction can be described according to degree of crack extension angle and relative crack position factors. It is also observed that the progress of the outer and inner crack tip direction is different which mainly depends on the relative crack position.

Research limitations/implications

It is limited to static loading only. Under fatigue loading findings may differ.

Practical implications

It is important to investigate the growth behaviour under multiple cracks and also to know the effect of crack statistics on the growth behaviour to estimate the component life. The study also focused on the development of a high quality predictive method.

Originality/value

The results show trends that vary with crack geometry condition and the ANN and empirical solution provides a possible solution to assess crack initiation angle under multiple crack geometry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose the interaction integral method combing with a XFEM-based local mesh replacement method to evaluate both the stress intensity factors (SIFs) and T-stress at the crack tip near a circular inclusion.

Design/methodology/approach

Special attention is pay to the effect of T-stress on crack initiation angle in 2D composite medium. The generalized maximum tangential stress criterion is employed during the simulation which simultaneously involves the effects of the mixed-mode SIFs, the T-stress and a physical length scale rc (the size of the fracture process zone).

Findings

It is shown that T-stress could affect the crack initiation angle significantly for mixed-mode conditions. Varies types of material mismatch are also considered and their influences on T-stress are given quantitatively.

Originality/value

The proposed numerical method allows a considerable flexibility for such problems and provides a basic framework for quasi-static crack growth in materials containing complex interfaces.

Abstract

Purpose

The determination of stress intensity factors (SIF) is of fundamental importance in prediction of brittle failure using linear elastic fracture mechanics. The presence of a crack in the vicinity of another crack induces an interaction effect. The purpose of this paper is to determine the SIF for an orthotropic lamina subjected to uniaxial loading and containing two cracks. The solution is obtained for one crack being horizontal and located in the centre of lamina while the other crack is inclined to first one. The effect of angle of the second crack, fibre angle is studied. Also, for the case of two parallel cracks, effect of eccentricity in x and y directions is observed.

Design/methodology/approach

Boundary collocation method is used and stress functions satisfying governing equations in the domain and ensuring stress singularity at the crack tips are defined. The boundary condition on the edges of lamina and the crack is satisfied to determine the complex coefficients in the stress functions.

Findings

For the given fibre angle, orientations of second crack which result in increase/decrease in the SIF at the most dangerous crack tip are found out.

Originality/value

Boundary collocation method which is simple and efficient is extended for studying two crack problem in orthotropic materials.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a numerical investigation used to calculate the J-integral of the main crack behavior emanating from a semicircular notch and double semicircular notch and its interaction with another crack which may occur in various positions in (TiB/Ti) functionally graded material (FGM) plate subjected to tensile mechanical load.

Design/methodology/approach

For this purpose the variations of the material properties are applied at the integration points and at the nodes by implementing a subroutine USDFLD in the ABAQUS software. The variation of the J-integral according to the position, the length and the angle of rotation of cracks is demonstrated. The variation of the J-integral according to the position, the length and the angle of rotation of cracks is examined; also the effect of different parameters for double notch FGM plate is investigated as well as the effect of band of FGM within the ceramic plate to reduce J-integral.

Findings

According to the numerical analysis, all parameters above played an important role in determining the J-integral.

Originality/value

The present study consists in investigating the simulation used to calculate the J-integral of the main crack behavior emanating from a semicircular notch and double semicircular notch and its interaction with another crack which may occur in various positions in (TiB/Ti) FGM plate under Mode I. The J-integral is determined for various load applied. The cracked plate is joined by bonding an FGM layer to TiB plate on its double side. The determination of the gain on J-integral by using FGM layer is highlighted. The calculation of J-integral of FGM’s involves the direction of the radius of the notch in order to reduce the J-integral.

Abstract

Purpose

In accord with the literature reviews, there is not a promising examination regarding the several straight and curved cracks interaction with arbitrary arrangement in the rectangular FGP plane. The purpose of this paper is to consider the effect of crack length, position of the point load, material non-homogeneity constant and also the arrangement of cracks on the resulting field intensity factors.

Design/methodology/approach

First of all, in order to obtain a set of Cauchy singular integral equations, both the dislocation method and the finite Fourier cosine transform technique are applied. Using the corresponding solution to these equations, the dislocation densities on the crack surfaces are then obtained. Considering the results, both the stress intensity factors (SIFs) and electric displacement intensity factors (EDIFs) for a vertical crack and the interaction between two straight and curved cracks, which have an arbitrary configuration, are determined.

Findings

The numerical examples are represented in order to illustrate the interesting mechanical and electrical coupling phenomena induced by multi-crack interactions. At the end, the effects of the material non-homogeneity constant, the crack length and the cracks arrangements on the SIFs and EDIFs are investigated.

Originality/value

The solutions are obtained in series expansion forms which may be considered as Green’s functions in an FGP rectangular plane possessing multiple cracks. The technique of Green’s function provides the ability to analyze multiple cracks having any smooth configuration.

Abstract

Purpose

This study provides an analysis of patch repair for cracked aircraft structures. Delamination is a type of damage that affects the patch's behavior. The purpose of this study is to assess the influence of delamination on repair performance.

Design/methodology/approach

An analytical and numerical study using the finite element method was conducted for a cracked plate repaired with a patch containing a pre-existing delamination defect. The method for defining the contact pair surfaces and modeling the delamination interaction within the patch interface is specified using the virtual crack closure technique (VCCT) approach.

Findings

The efficiency of the repair is measured in terms of the J-integral. The effects of delamination initiation, mechanical loading, crack length and patch stacking sequences are presented. It is noted that in mode I, delamination propagation is only significant at node A. The numerical results are in good agreement with those of the analytical solution found in the literature. It is observed that the patch's behavior is strongly dependent on loading, crack size and stacking sequences in terms of reducing the structure's lifespan, especially in the presence of delamination.

Originality/value

The numerical modeling presented by the VCCT approach is highly valuable for studying delamination evolution. The influence of loading, crack size and stacking sequences on repair performance is discussed in this work.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a theoretical analysis of the fracture behavior of multiple axisymmetric interface cracks between a homogeneous isotropic layer and its functionally graded material (FGM) coating under torsional loading.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors employ the distributed dislocation technique to the stress analysis, an FGM coating-substrate system under torsional loading with multiple axisymmetric cracks consist of annular and penny-shaped cracks. First, with the aid of the Hankel transform, the stress fields in the homogeneous layer and its FGM coating are obtained. The problem is then reduced to a set of singular integral equations with a Cauchy-type singularity. Unknown dislocation density is achieved by numerical solution of these integral equations which are employed to calculate the SIFs.

Findings

From the numerical results, the following key points were observed: first, for two types of the axisymmetric interface cracks, the SIFs decrease with growing in the values of the non-homogeneity. Second, the SIFs increase with increases in interface crack length. Third, the magnitude of the SIFs decreases with increases in the FGM coating thickness. Fourth, the interaction between cracks is an important factor affecting the SIFs of crack tips.

Originality/value

New analytical dislocation solution in an FGM coating-substrate system is developed.

The paper aims to propose a rate‐dependent model of structural concrete in combination with the kinematics of condensed water.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to propose a rate‐dependent model of structural concrete in combination with the kinematics of condensed water.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the paper proposes the coupling model of water versus cracked concrete with a mathematical completeness of equilibrium and deformational compatibility. The proposed model deals with anisotropy of structural performance and of permeability, which is a particular issue of concrete caused by cracks. The governing equation for saturated concrete in this study is based on Biot's theory that deals with particle assembly as a two‐phase composite. Second, the paper shows the possible reduction of the fatigue life of real‐scale bridge RC decks owing to the water residing in structural cracks under moving wheel‐type loading.

Findings

The paper shows that the existence of water possibly has an influence on the rate‐dependency of structural performance. The comparison of transition of pore pressure and principal strain indicates that damage to the concrete skeleton is accelerated by internal stress caused by high pore pressure. It suggests that the existence of water can reduce the fatigue life of bridge decks, especially when the upper layer is saturated.

Originality/value

This paper clarifies the effect of pore water on structural concrete by using numerical model considering kinematics of water.

Abstract

Fluxset type eddy current probes are used for detecting discontinuities in conducting materials. The measurements obtained by such probes can be used for the reconstruction of the parameters of the detected discontinuity if the output signal of the measurement is uniquely related to the measured field. In this paper a calibration method is presented for the establishment of the relation between the measured magnetic field and the output signal of the probe. The relation is obtained by the optimisation of the parameters of the mapping between the calculated magnetic field distribution and the measured output signal. The magnetic field distribution due to the interaction of the probe and an infinitesimally thin crack located in a conducting plate is calculated numerically by the solution of a boundary integral equation.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the non-local piezoelectricity theory, this paper is concerned with two collinear permeable Mode-I cracks in piezoelectric materials subjected to the harmonic stress wave. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

According to the Fourier transformation, the problem is formulated into two pairs of dual integral equations, in which the unknown variables are the displacement jumps across the crack surfaces.

Findings

Finally, the dynamic non-local stress and the dynamic non-local electric displacement fields near the crack tips are obtained. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the effects of the distance between the two collinear cracks, the lattice parameter and the circular frequency of the incident waves on the entire dynamic fields near the crack tips, which play an important role in designing new structures in engineering.

Originality/value

Different from the classical solutions, the present solution exhibits no stress and electric displacement singularities at the crack tips in piezoelectric materials. It is found that the maximum stress and maximum electric displacement can be used as a fracture criterion.
