Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe a set of simple yet effective, numerical method for the design and evaluation of parachute-payload system. The developments include a coupled fluid-structural solver for unsteady simulations of ram-air type parachutes. The main features of the computational tools are described and several numerical examples are provided to illustrate the performance and capabilities of the technique.

Design/methodology/approach

For an efficient solution of the aerodynamic problem, an unsteady panel method has been chosen exploiting the fact that large areas of separated flow are not expected under nominal flight conditions of ram-air parachutes. A dynamic explicit finite element solver is used for the structure. This approach yields a robust solution even when highly nonlinear effects due to large displacements and material response are present. The numerical results show considerable accuracy and robustness.

Findings

A simple and effective numerical tool for the analysis of parachutes has been developed.

Originality/value

An analysis code has been developed which addresses the needs of ram-air parachute designers. The software delivers reasonably accurate results in a short time using modest hardware. It can therefore assist the design process, which nowadays relies on empirical methods.

Abstract

This paper gives a bibliographical review of the finite element and boundary element parallel processing techniques from the theoretical and application points of view. Topics include: theory – domain decomposition/partitioning, load balancing, parallel solvers/algorithms, parallel mesh generation, adaptive methods, and visualization/graphics; applications – structural mechanics problems, dynamic problems, material/geometrical non‐linear problems, contact problems, fracture mechanics, field problems, coupled problems, sensitivity and optimization, and other problems; hardware and software environments – hardware environments, programming techniques, and software development and presentations. The bibliography at the end of this paper contains 850 references to papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations dealing with presented subjects that were published between 1996 and 2002.

Abstract

Purpose

The time of tightly coupled transient calculation and the accuracy of conventional loosely coupled algorithm make it difficult to meet the engineering design requirements for long-term conjugate heat transfer (CHT) problems. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new loosely coupled algorithm with sufficient accuracy and less calculation time on the basis of the quasi-steady flow field. Through this algorithm, it will be possible to reduce the update frequency of the flow field and devise a strategy by which to reasonably determine the update steps.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the new algorithm updates the flow field by solving the steady governing equations in the fluid region and by calculating the transient temperature distribution until the next update of the fluid flow, by means of solving the transient energy equations in the entire computational domain. The authors propose a strategy by which to determine the update step, by using the engineering empirical formula of the Nusselt number, on the basis of the changes of the inlet and outlet boundary conditions.

Findings

Taking a duct heated by an inner forced air flow heating process as an example, the comparison results for the tightly coupled transient calculation by Fluent software shows that the new algorithm is able to significantly reduce the calculation time of the transient temperature distribution with reasonable accuracy. For example, the respective computing times are reduced to 22.8 and 40 per cent, while the duct wall temperature deviations are 7 and 5 per cent, using the two flow update time steps of 100 and 50 s on the variable inlet-flow rate conditions.

Originality/value

The new algorithm outlined in this paper further improves the calculated performance and meets the engineering design requirements for long-term CHT problems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze lubrication characteristics of a tilting pad thrust bearing considering the effect of the thermal elastic deformation of the pad and collar.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used the fluid–solid interaction (FSI) technique to investigate the lubrication characteristics of a tilting pad thrust bearing for several typical operating conditions. The influences of the rotational speed, the thrust load and the oil supply temperature on the lubrication characteristics were analyzed.

Findings

The three-dimensional (3D) film model clearly shows that there is no pressure gradient but large temperature gradients across the film thickness. The wall heat transfer coefficients on the pad surfaces distribute in a very complex way and change within a large range. The rotational speed, the thrust load and the oil supply temperature have great but different influences on the lubrication characteristics.

Originality/value

This paper has preliminarily revealed the lubrication mechanism of the tilting-pad thrust bearings. The 3D FSI method is suggested to evaluate the thermal-elastic-hydrodynamic deformations of thrust bearings instead of the conventional method which iteratively solves the Reynolds equation, the energy equation, the heat conduction equation and the elastic equilibrium equation. Using FSI method, the heat transfer coefficients on the pad surfaces can be evaluated better.

Abstract

Purpose

The design of electromagnetic systems for a variety of applications such as induction heating, electrical machines, actuators and transformers requires the solution of a multi-physics problem often involving thermal, structural and mechanical coupling to the electromagnetic system. This results in a complex analysis system embedded within an optimization process. The appearance of high-performance computing systems over the past few years has made coupled simulations feasible for the design engineer. When coupled with surrogate modelling techniques, it is possible to significantly reduce the wall clock time for generating a complete design while including the impact of the multi-physics performance on the device.

Design/methodology/approach

An architecture is proposed for linking multiple singe physics analysis tools through the material models and a controller which schedules the execution of the various software tools. The combination of tools is implemented on a series of computational nodes operating in parallel and creating a “super node” cluster within a collection of interconnected processors.

Findings

The proposed architecture and job scheduling system can allow a parallel exploration of the design space for a device.

Originality/value

The originality of the work derives from the organization of the parallel computing system into a series of “super nodes” and the creation of a materials database suitable for multi-physics interactions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the design of a solid square canopy of a parachute. The design improvements are brought out by providing minor slits in the canopy area. Proper designing of the parachute was carried out using theoretical investigation coupled with experimentation. This parachute is designed for launch of sonobuoy from fixed wing aircraft.

Design/methodology/approach

Literature review was carried out on the design of such parachutes for the launch of a sonobuoy from a high altitude to the water entry. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis provided the value of the coefficient of drag for the slit-cut square canopy parachute, with and without sonobuoy for different lengths of the slit. Besides the theoretical investigation, experimentation was also carried out to validate the design.

Findings

The experimentation was carried out on 58 and 75 gsm fabric canopies with the slit edge plain-cut with thermally sealed edges, stitched and strengthened. In the case of plain-cut slits on the canopy made of 75 gsm fabric, no tearing of the slit edge was observed in dynamic and flight tests.

Research limitations/implications

The present work has been carried out considering various assumptions and limited trial data specific to precision drop of 9 kg payload. The work can be adopted for bigger parachute for dropping of higher payloads.

Originality/value

Lab strength test, track dynamic and flight trials were conducted to acquire useful data for the present analysis. Besides the theoretical investigations and CFD analysis inherently based on numerous assumptions, experimentation was carried out as the sonobuoy deployment conditions are full of uncertainty. Dynamic and airdrop tests were conducted for this reason to determine design changes in the slits, both at the material level and on improvisations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study’s investigation aims to clarify the effect of an additional geometry, i.e. a fillet radius, to the blades of a single-stage transonic axial compressor, NASA Stage 37, on its aerodynamic and structural performances.

Design/methodology/approach

Applying the commercial simulation software and the one-way fluid–structure interaction (FSI) approach, this study first evaluated the simulation results with the experimental data for the aerodynamic performances. Second, this paper compared the structural performances between the models with and without fillets.

Findings

This research analyses the aerodynamic results (i.e. total pressure ratio, adiabatic efficiency, stall margin) and the structural outcomes (i.e. equivalent von Mises stress, total deformation) of the single-stage transonic axial compressor NASA Stage 37.

Originality/value

This paper mentions the influence of blade fillets (i.e. both rotor hub fillet and stator shroud fillet) on the compressor performances (i.e. the aerodynamic and structural performances).
