Abstract

Purpose

The corrosion of reinforcing steel bars reduces significantly the life and durability of concrete structures. This critical concern causes great losses to the economy and industry. The purpose of this paper is to estimate the effects of corrosion on the tensile mechanical properties of embedded steel bars B500c in concrete.

Design/methodology/approach

The concept is based on the curve fitting modelling, as well the mathematical correlation of the tensile mechanical properties between corroded bare and corroded embedded steel bars. In order to achieve this, extensive experiments were carried out on both bare (Ø8, 10, 12, 16 and 18 mm) and embedded (Ø8 mm) steel bars B500c, which were subjected to artificially accelerated corrosive conditions in a chloride‐rich atmosphere for several exposure times.

Findings

The research results show that the estimation method is available and effective in simulating the tensile mechanical behaviour of corroded reinforcing steel bars B500c.

Originality/value

As far as is known, this is the first time that an advanced data processing technique has been employed to try to find the mathematical correlation of the existing corrosion damage on the residual tensile properties between bare and embedded steel bars. It is argued that these models can be developed in order to reduce the need for expensive experimental investigation in materials.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to quantitively characterize pitting or local corrosion of steel bars. Characterization of pitting or local corrosion is important for steel bar corrosion research in concrete, which is still an unsolved problem for the reason that the pitting on corroded steel is distributed irregularly, besides the varied pitting depths. To solve this problem in a certain degree, two parameters were collectively used to find the pitting distribution and pitting depth distribution of corroded steel bar surface.

Design/methodology/approach

Corroded reinforcement bars were subjected to two different corrosive conditions to obtain the profile of the surface of corroded steel bar. The arithmetic mean deviation of the profile, Ra, also a roughness parameter, and the fractal dimension, D, were computed using MATLAB software from the data on corroded steel bar profiles scanned by a profile tester. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the parameters distribution of Ra.

Findings

Ra and D can assist gravimetric technique in defining the degree of pitting corrosion and make further understanding about the characterization of local or pitting corrosion.

Originality/value

Two parameters were collectively used to find the pitting distribution and pitting depth distribution of corroded steel bar surface, while many studies only study the fractal dimension of pitting corrosion. And, the relationship between these two parameters is studied when using them to describing the non-uniformity of pitting corrosion degree. Using these two parameters can much better describe the non-uniform degree of pitting corrosion.

Abstract

Purpose

As it is widely known, corrosion constitutes a major deterioration factor for reinforced concrete (RC) structures which are located on coastal areas. This phenomenon combined with repeated loads, as earthquake events, negatively affects their service life. Moreover, microstructure of steel reinforcing bars has significant impact either on their corrosion resistance or on their fatigue life.

Design/methodology/approach

In the present manuscript an effort has been made to investigate the effect of corrosive factor on fatigue response for two types of steel reinforcement; Tempcore steel reinforcing bars and a new generation dual phase (DP) steel reinforcement.

Findings

The findings of this experimental study showed that DP steel reinforcement led to better results regarding its capacity to bear repeated loads to satisfactory degree after corrosion, although this type of steel has less stringent mechanical properties.

Originality/value

Additionally, a fatigue damage material indicator is proposed as a parameter that could rank material quality and its suitability for a certain application. The results of this investigation showed that the fatigue damage indicator can be used as an appropriate index in order to evaluate the overall performance of materials, in terms of strength and ductility capacity.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the bonding properties of textile reinforced concrete (TRC)-confined concrete and corroded plain round bars.

Design/methodology/approach

The bonding performance of three types of specimens (not reinforced, reinforced after corrosion and reinforced before corrosion) was studied by a central pull out test.

Findings

The ultimate bond strength between the corroded steel bars and the concrete is improved when the corrosion ratio is small. After cracking, the degree of corrosion continues to grow and the ultimate bond strength decreases. TRC reinforcement has no detectable effect on the interfacial bonding properties between concrete and plain round bars when the corrosion of steel bars is small; however, when the concrete cracks under the action of rust corrosion, the TRC constraints can effectively improve the bonding performance of the two components.

Practical implications

TRC layer significantly delayed the chloride penetration rate, which can effectively limit the development of corrosion cracking.

Purpose

Structures in seismic areas, during their service lifetime, are subjected to numerous seismic loads that certainly affect their structural integrity. The degradation of these structures, to a great extent, depends on the scale of seismic events, the steel mechanical performance on reversal loads and its resistance to corrosion phenomena. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the experimental results of seismic steel behavior S400 (BSt III), which was widely used in the past years, a prediction study of seismic steel behavior was conducted in the current study. This prediction on behavior of both reference and corroded steel was succeeded through a simulation of experimental low cycle fatigue conditions (LCF – strain controlled).

Findings

At the same time, the present study analyses fatigue factors (ef, a, fSR, ed, ep, R, b) that define their inelastic relation between tension – strain and a prediction model on behavior of both reference and corroded steel rebar, in seismic loads conditions (LCF), is proposed.

Originality/value

Moreover, this study dealt with the synergy of corrosion factor and the existence of superficial ribs (ribbed and smoothed) in seismic behavior of steel bar S400 (BSt420). The S-N curves that are exported can be resulted in a first attempt of prediction of anti-seismic behavior on reinforced concrete structures with this the same steel class.

Abstract

Purpose

Existing deterministic models that predict the capacity of corroded reinforced concrete (RC) beams have limited applicability because they were based on accelerated tests that induce general corrosion. This research gap was addressed by performing a combined numerical and statistical analysis on RC beams, subjected to natural corrosion, to achieve a much better forecast.

Design/methodology/approach

Data of 42 naturally corroded beams were collected from the literature and analyzed numerically. Four constitutive models and their combinations were considered: the elastic-semi-plastic and elastic-perfectly-plastic models for steel, and two tensile models for concrete with and without the post-cracking stresses. Meanwhile, Popovics’ model was used to describe the behavior of concrete under compression. Corrosion coefficients were developed as functions of corrosion degree and beam parameters through linear regression analysis to fit the theoretical moment capacities with test data. The performance of the coefficients derived from different combinations of constitutive laws was then compared and validated.

Findings

The results showed that the highest accuracy (R2 = 0.90) was achieved when the tensile response of concrete was modeled without the residual stresses after cracking and the steel was analyzed as an elastic-perfectly-plastic material. The proposed procedure and regression model also showed reasonable agreement with experimental data, even performing better than the current models derived from accelerated tests and traditional procedures.

Originality/value

This study presents a simple but reliable approach for quantifying the capacity of RC beams under more realistic conditions than previously reported. This method is simple and requires only a few variables to be employed. Civil engineers can use it to obtain a quick and rough estimate of the structural condition of corroding RC beams.

Abstract

Purpose

Incorporating pre-existing crack in service life prediction of reinforced concrete structures subjected to corrosion is crucial for accurate assessment, realistic modelling and effective decision-making in terms of maintenance and repair strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

An accelerated corrosion test was conducted by using impressed current method on cylindrical specimens with varying cover thickness and crack width. Mechanical properties of the specimens were evaluated by tensile tests.

Findings

The results show that, the pre-cracked samples exhibited shorter concrete cover cracking times, particularly with wider cracks when compared to the uncracked samples. Moreover, the load-bearing capacity of the reinforcement bars decreased owing to the pre-cracks, causing structural deflection and a shortened yield plateau. However, the ductility index remained consistent across all sample types, implying that the concrete had good overall ductility. Comparing the results of the non-corroded rebar and corroded rebar samples, the maximum reduction in the yield load was 25.22%, whereas the maximum reduction in the ultimate load was 26.23%. The simple mathematical model proposed in this study provides a reliable method for predicting the chloride ion diffusion coefficient in cracked concrete of existing reinforced concrete structures.

Originality/value

A simple mathematical model was proposed for evaluation of the equivalent chloride ion diffusion coefficient considering crack width, average crack spacing and crack extending lengths for cracked reinforced concrete structures, which is used to incorporate existing crack in service life prediction models.

Abstract

Purpose

To understand the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams confined by corroded stirrups, low-reversed cyclic loading tests were carried out on seven RC beam specimens with different stirrup corrosion levels and stirrup ratios to investigate their mechanical characteristics.

Design/methodology/approach

The failure mode, hysteresis behavior, skeleton curves, ductility, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation behavior of RC specimens are compared and discussed. The experimental results showed that the restraint of concrete provided by corroded stirrups is reduced, which leads to a decline in seismic performance.

Findings

For the specimens with the same ratios of stirrup, as the corrosion level increased, the load-carrying capacity, stiffness, plastic deformation capacity and energy-dissipation capacity dropped significantly. Compared with the uncorroded specimen, the failure modes of specimens with high corrosion level changed from ductile bending failure to brittle failure. For the specimens with the same levels of corrosion, the higher the stirrup ratio was, the stronger the restraint effect of the stirrups on the concrete, and the seismic behavior of the specimens was obviously improved.

Originality/value

In this paper, a total of seven full-size RC beam specimens at joints with different stirrup corrosion levels and stirrup ratios were designed and constructed to explore the influences of corrosion levels and stirrup ratios of stirrups on the seismic performances. The failure modes, strain of reinforcement, hysteretic curves, skeleton curves, stiffness degradation and ductility factor of RC specimens are compared and discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

High-ductility cementitious composites (HDCC) have an excellent crack controlled capacity and corrosion resistance capacity, which has a promising application in structure engineering under harsh environment. The purpose of this study is to explore the corrosion mechanism of steel bar in HDCC.

Design/methodology/approach

Intact and the pre-cracked HDCC specimens under the coupled action of different dry–wet cycles and chloride attack were designed, and intact normal concrete (NC) was also considered for comparison. Corrosion behavior of a steel bar embedded in HDCC was analyzed by an electrochemical method, a chloride permeability test and X-ray computed tomography.

Findings

Steel corrosion probability is related to the chloride permeability of the HDCC cover, and the chloride permeability resistance of HDCC is better than that of NC. Besides, crack is the key factor affecting the corrosion of steel bars, and the HDCC with narrower cracks have a lower corrosion rate. Slight pitting occurs at the crack tips. In addition, the self-healing products and corrosion products fill up the cracks in HDCC, preventing the external aggressive ions from entering and thereby decreasing the steel corrosion rate.

Originality/value

HDCC has a superior corrosion resistance than that of NC, effects of variable crack width on corrosion behavior of steel bar in HDCC under the coupled actions of different dry–wet cycles and chloride attack are investigated, which can provide the guide for the design application of HDCC material in structure engineering exposed to marine environment.

Abstract

Purpose

Corrosive agent constitutes a major problem for constructions located in coastal areas, since it keeps affecting their durability. This phenomenon, in synergy with moisture and high temperatures, leads to premature deterioration of the structures. Under these conditions, the need for management of the problem of resistance of steel against corrosion is an issue of paramount importance and a challenge to the structural integrity and reliability. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The need for management of the problem of resistance of steel against corrosion is an issue of paramount importance and a challenge to the structural integrity and reliability. In the present study, an effort was made to increase the corrosion resistance of the high strength and ductility dual-phase steel B500c category, with the use of different shot blasting processes, without any interference in the chemical composition or in the production mode. In particular, shot blasting treatment was used for both cleaning and creating compressive stresses on the surface of steel bars, according to the pertinent protocols. The modified samples were studied via both conventional characterization methods and electrochemical techniques.

Findings

Through the whole surface treatment process of B500c steel, a positive impact came about not only the corrosion resistance, but also the mechanical performance.

Originality/value

Shot blasting process aims to increase the corrosion resistance of high ductility dual-phase steel (B500c), without any interference in the chemical composition or in the production mode.
