Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine both analytically and numerically the solution to a new one-dimensional equation for the propagation of small-amplitude waves in shallow waters that accounts for linear and nonlinear drift, diffusive attenuation, viscosity and dispersion, its dependence on the initial conditions, and its linear stability.

Design/methodology/approach

An implicit, finite difference method valid for both parabolic and second-order hyperbolic equations has been used to solve the equation in a truncated domain for five different initial conditions, a nil initial first-order time derivative and relaxation times linearly proportional to the viscosity coefficient.

Findings

A fast transition that depends on the coefficient of the linear drift, the diffusive attenuation and the power of the nonlinear drift are found for initial conditions corresponding to the exact solution of the generalized regularized long-wave equation. For initial Gaussian, rectangular and triangular conditions, the wave’s amplitude and speed increase as both the amplitude and the width of these conditions increase and decrease, respectively; wide initial conditions evolve into a narrow leading traveling wave of the pulse type and a train of slower oscillatory secondary ones. For the same initial mass and amplitude, rectangular initial conditions result in larger amplitude and velocity waves of the pulse type than Gaussian and triangular ones. The wave’s kinetic, potential and stretching energies undergo large changes in an initial layer whose thickness is on the order of the diffusive attenuation coefficient.

Originality/value

A new, one-dimensional equation for the propagation of small-amplitude waves in shallow waters is proposed and studied analytically and numerically. The equation may also be used to study the displacement of porous media subject to seismic effects, the dispersion of sound in tunnels, the attenuation of sound because of viscosity and/or heat and mass diffusion, the dynamics of second-order, viscoelastic fluids, etc., by appropriate choices of the parameters that appear in it.

This paper presents the second-generation estimates for the Italian engineering industry in 1911, a year documented both by the customary demographic census, and the first industrial census. The first part of this paper uses the census data to estimate the industry’s value added, sector by sector; the second further disaggregates each sector by activity, and estimates the value added, employment, physical product, and metal consumption of each one. A third, concluding section dwells on the dependence of cross-section estimates on time-series evidence. Three appendices detail the specific algorithms that generate the present estimates; a fourth, a useful sample of firm-specific data.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present the cost and revenue efficiency evaluation models in data envelopment analysis in the presence of fuzzy inputs, outputs and their prices that the prices are also fuzzy. This study applies the proposed approach in the energy sector of the oil industry.

Design/methodology/approach

This study proposes a value-based technology according to fuzzy input-cost and revenue-output data, and based on this technology, the authors propose an approach to calculate fuzzy cost and revenue efficiency based on a directional distance function approach. These papers incorporated a decision-maker’s (DM) a priori knowledge into the fuzzy cost (revenue) efficiency analysis.

Findings

This study shows that the proposed approach obtains the components of fuzzy numbers corresponding to fuzzy cost efficiency scores in the interval [0, 1] corresponding to each of the decision-making units (DMUs). The models presented in this paper satisfies the most important properties: translation invariance, translation invariance, handle with negative data. The proposed approach obtains the fuzzy efficient targets corresponding to each DMU.

Originality/value

In the proposed approach, by selecting the appropriate direction vector in the model, we can incorporate preference information of the DM in the process of evaluating fuzzy cost or revenue efficiency and this shows the efficiency of the method and the advantages of the proposed model in a fully fuzzy environment.

Abstract

Optimisation of the discretising steps in the space and time domains has been studied for the evaluation of corresponding optimum value of over‐relaxation parameter in the numerical solution of transient heat flow equation using successive‐over‐relaxation method in the finite difference code. No closed form solutions are available for the optimisation of a complete set of involved parameters in such problems. The present work deals quantitatively with the need for a more generalised closed form relation involving discretising steps in the space and the time domains for an optimal over‐relaxation parameter. The maximum finite difference error and the number of iterations required to achieve a reasonable error tolerance in the functional value are the two criteria used to obtain an optimised set of parameters. The effect of deviation from the optimised values of any of the involved parameters has been shown over a model problem of one‐dimensional diamond‐IIa medium of 100 micrometer length and for a time duration of 1.24 micro‐seconds.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyze deeply the effect of surface roughness conditions of the common interface of the two-layered riveted cantilever beams on their frictional damping during free lateral vibration at first mode. Here, the product, (µ × α), and damping ratio, ξ, are the parameters whose variations are analyzed in this investigation. For this, the influencing parameters considered are the natural frequency of vibration, f; the amplitude of initial excitation, y; and surface roughness value, Ra.

Design/methodology/approach

For experimentally evaluating logarithmic damping decrement, d, the frequency response function analyzer for the case of free lateral vibrations was used. Later, for evaluating the product, µ × α (where µ is the kinematic coefficient of friction and α is the dynamic slip ratio), and then, the damping ratio, ξ, the empirical relation suggested for logarithmic damping decrement, d, of riveted cantilever beams was used. After this, the full and reduced quadratic models of the product, µ × α, ξ, response surface methodology (RSM) with the help of Design Expert 11 software was used. Corresponding main effects plots, surface plots and prediction comparison plots were obtained to observe the variations of the product, µ × α, ξ for the variations of influencing parameters: f, y and Ra. Finally, a machine learning technique such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) using “nntool” present in MATLAB R13a software was used to predict the ξ for the different combinations of f, y and Ra.

Findings

The full and reduced quadratic regression models for the product, (µ × α) and the damping ratio, ξ of riveted cantilever beams for free lateral vibrations of the first mode in terms of the parameters: f, y and Ra were obtained. In addition, the main effects plots, surface plots and prediction comparison plots for the product, µ × α, ξ, with the corresponding experimental values of the product, µ × α, ξ, were obtained. Also, the execution of ANNs using MATLAB R13a software is proved to be the more accurate tool for the prediction of damping ratios in comparison to quadratic regression equations obtained from Design Expert 11 software. In the end, the assumption that the effect of surface roughness value on the product, (µ × α), and the damping ratio, ξ, is negligible is proved to be true using the main effects plots for the product, (µ × α) and ξ obtained from the Design Expert 11 software.

Originality/value

Obtaining the full and reduced quadratic regression equations for the product, (µ × α), and ξ of the two-layered riveted cantilever beams in terms of parameters: f, y and Ra was done. In addition, the conditions for the corresponding minimum and maximum values of the product, (µ × α), and ξ were obtained. Later, the main effects plots, surface plots and comparison plots of the predicted product, (µ × α), and ξ versus experimental product, (µ × α), and ξ were also obtained. Finally, the predicted values of the product, (µ × α), and ξ using the ANNs tool are observed to be the more accurate values in comparison to that obtained from RSM using the Design Expert 11 software.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a numerical definition-based systematic design approach (NDSDA) to generate an explicit numerical definition of the product form profile and to establish the correlation between the product form features and the corresponding consumers’ image perceptions.

Design/methodology/approach

To illustrate the feasibility of the proposed method, this study considers the design of a two-dimensional automobile profile for illustration purposes and commences by developing a detailed numerical definition of an automobile profile using Bézier curves. A series of automobile image evaluations are conducted to examine the relationship between the characteristics of an automobile profile and its associated consumer image perception. Finally, the evaluation results are analyzed statistically, and the statistical results are used to construct mathematical models formalizing the correlations between the automobile profile design variables and the consumers’ perceptions of the product image.

Findings

The results of the evaluation trials are used to construct mathematical models capable of predicting the likely consumer response to any automobile profile designed in accordance with the numerical definition. Furthermore, the evaluation data enable the critical design variables and form features to be determined such that the efficacy of the design process in creating automobiles which better meet the consumers’ image aspirations can be improved.

Originality/value

The major contribution of the NDSDA methodology presented in this study is the ability it gives to designers to specify the product form in a detailed yet highly efficient manner. Furthermore, the numerical definition of the product form not only provides a suitable basis for identifying the critical design variables and form features of the product but also provides an understanding of how these variables should be manipulated to obtain or reinforce the desired product image.

Abstract

WHILE the introduction of statistical methods into the analysis of aeronautical experimental data, whether for quality control in production, for the interpretation of the results of structural and aerodynamic laboratory experiments, or for airline operation, has been brought about only in recent years, it may by now be fair to assert that their advantages and even their indispensability are no longer in dispute. Hitherto, investigations on these lines have usually involved, explicitly or implicitly, only the ‘normal curve of error’ and allied considerations; owing, it may be thought, to the controllability of the various manufacturing or laboratory techniques, but also perhaps to the scarcity of data hitherto available. It may well be, however, that with the accumulation of information arising out of investigations planned with particular reference to the statistical analysis of their results the whole range of the apparatus for statistical analysis, usually confined to such fields as those of biology or economics, will be called into full play.

Abstract

Purpose

For internal flows with small values of the Reynolds number, there is often at a considerable distance from the pipe inlet cross-section a change of the flow form from laminar to turbulent. To describe this phenomenon of laminar-turbulent transition in the pipe, also parallel-plate channel flow, a modified algebraic intermittency model was used. The original model for bypass transition developed by S. Kubacki and E. Dick was designed for simulating bypass transition in turbomachinery.

Design/methodology/approach

A modification of mentioned model was proposed. Modified model is suitable for simulating internal flows in pipes and parallel-plate channels. Implementation of the modified model was made using the OpenFOAM framework. Values of several constants of the original model were modified.

Findings

For selected Reynolds numbers and turbulence intensities (Tu), localization of laminar breakdown and fully turbulent flow was presented. Results obtained in this work were compared with corresponding experimental results available in the literature. It is particularly worth noting that asymptotic values of wall shear stress in flow channels and asymptotic values of axis velocity obtained during simulations are similar to related experimental and theoretical results.

Originality/value

The modified model allows precision numerical simulation in the area of transitional flow between laminar, intermittent and turbulent flows in pipes and parallel-plate channels. Proposed modified algebraic intermittency model presented in this work is described by a set of two additional partial differential equations corresponding with k-omega turbulence model presented by Wilcox (Wilcox, 2006).
