Abstract

Discusses the importance of continuing medical education (CME) as a key means of improving the effectiveness of health care. Notes that CME must be integral to the health system and be centrally placed within that system if it is to have the required impact. CME methodology needs to be examined and to have the appropriate effect CME activities should be related to the problems experienced within the health system. Stresses that to date there is little hard evidence to show that CME equates with effective health care but that it is an act of faith to which sensible health managers and professionals have no hesitation in subscribing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present an initial discussion on issues related to imparting medical education through the e‐learning mode in India.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach takes the form of the authors' observations as well as reflections on discussions with medical practitioners.

Findings

Online medical education has the potential to address the issue of shortage of medical professionals in India. This study provides insights into the receptiveness of the faculty members regarding the paradigm shift from traditional classroom to online learning environment. It describes the apprehensions, the hurdles and the probable way forward to aid e‐learning in medical education. The discussion can influence policy makers with regard to required accreditation systems for offering and acceptance of online degrees. It can also aid the cause of increasing the doctor‐population ratio, which may lower the deficiency of skilled professionals in the rural regions, thereby ensuring the availability of quality medical education and service to all strata of society at affordable options.

Originality/value

This paper draws on the knowledge, experiences and insights of medical practitioners and trainers in India who regularly interact with faculty, administrators, students and policy makers. As an initial work in this crucial area, the paper raises several questions and identifies areas in need of immediate examination.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the use of a free code computational tool, Patent2net, in the search of patents for the implementation of distance learning aimed at Continuing Medical Education.

Design/methodology/approach

This technical report is based on the extraction, organization and availability, in the format of graphs and dynamic tables, and also based on information in other patents on the subject, made available in the Espacenet database.

Findings

As a result, it was possible to identify a Chinese patent, free for reproduction in Brazil, which describes an e-learning system that simulates 3D scenarios for training nursing teams.

Research limitations/implications

The paper has used one unique patent database, but containing more than 100m documents.

Practical implications

The selected patent can contribute to the improvement of care and behavioral techniques of the health professionals.

Social implications

The training of health professionals can improve the public and supplementary health systems.

Originality/value

This is the first paper in that de technometric analisys of patents was used to solve a problem regarding the training of health professionals.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to objectively assess the best type of continuing medical education (CME) activity that makes the most impact on the physicians’ behavior in changing their practices and to derive future needs for planning effective CME activities.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents a survey. A questionnaire was designed, pilot‐tested and administered in a CME session to all the health physicians of a private medical university in Sind province of Pakistan. The questionnaire incorporated seven core items that assessed the impact of different types of CME activities on the physicians. The respondents rated the impact of CME based on their competence, performance, patient care processes and management on a five‐point Likert scale. Respondents’ responses in terms of type, committed time, usefulness, sponsorships and settings were also analyzed.

Findings

A total of 194 health physicians completed the questionnaire (response rate=100 per cent); 56 per cent of the responses were from female physicians. A majority of the respondents in their replies ranked local large‐group lectures, symposiums and workshops higher than journal clubs, conferences and on‐line CMEs. More than half of the respondents rated the impact of CMEs on a five‐point Likert scale as good or very good. This was in relevance to increase in their competence, performance, patient care processes and change in management style.

Research limitations/implications

The data generated through the survey are subject to desirability bias and may over‐represent the responses. The other limitation was the single university setting.

Practical implications

The methodology can thus be adaptable by CME planners within the region to assess the impact of the current CME activities in improving physicians’ competence and professionalism, and in designing effective academic activities for the future.

Originality/value

There is no other study that demonstrates the impact of the types of CME on physicians in the Pakistani medical profession and hence this paper is of high interest.

Abstract

States that health systems globally are in transition, for which also a correspondingly reformed education is required, involving new ‐ and renewed ‐ basic sciences, principles, skills and methods. To that end, demonstrates how problem‐based learning in general practice is almost ideal, although still sparsely implemented, and has much in common with health care quality assurance. Contends that primary care in many ways comprises the most important platform and vehicle of modern health services and their interaction with the population. Uses the example of the Faculty of Health Sciences in Linköping, where all curricula are integrated, community‐oriented, problem‐based and have a focus on primary care and general practice. Represents a useful and hitherto insufficiently recognized widening of the overall field of health care quality assurance, and summarizes some of the experiences therein. Also provides a brief overview of the literature.

Abstract

The progress of initiatives concerned with implementing evaluated clinical research (such as evidence based medicine and clinical effectiveness) is dependent on the way individual health professionals actually acquire, use and value clinical knowledge in routine practice. The findings of two research projects, the Value and EVINCE projects, are compared with studies of the consolidation and application of clinical knowledge in clinical decision making. The Value project was concerned with the ways in which information from NHS libraries might be used in present and future clinical decision making. EVINCE was a similar impact study for nursing professionals. Both studies confirmed the importance of personal clinical knowledge. Health information services need to use a variety of strategies and knowledge management skills to ensure that the evaluated research evidence is assimilated and implemented into practice.
