Abstract

Purpose

To make a derivation of the load‐carrying capacity of elastohydrodynamic lubrication for special operating conditions, i.e. extremely heavy loads or extremely low rolling speeds based on the Newtonian fluid model by taking the Grubin‐type EHL inlet zone analysis, justify the load‐carrying capacity of elastohydrodynamic lubrication film in these operating conditions, and propose future trends of the research in EHL and mixed EHL based on the obtained results in the present paper.

Design/methodology/approach

A Grubin‐type EHL inlet zone analysis is carried out for the isothermal EHL of line contacts in special operating conditions, i.e. extremely heavy loads or extremely low rolling speeds based on the Newtonian fluid model. Comparison is made between the central EHL film thickness in line contacts, respectively, predicted by conventional EHL theories and accurately predicted from the present analysis for these operating conditions. An interpretation is made for the EHL film thickness in these operating conditions by taking the approach of the transportation and flow of the fluid through elastohydrodynamic contact when the EHL film is, respectively, thick and molecularly thin in the Hertzian zone. Conclusions are drawn on the load‐carrying capacity of EHL, EHL contact regimes and mixed EHL regimes in these operating conditions.

Findings

The present EHL inlet zone analysis shows that the EHL film thickness in the Hertzian zone is on the nanometer scale and the lubricant is non‐continuum across the film thickness in the Hertzian zone at relatively heavy loads in line contact EHL when the dimensionless rolling speed is lower than the dimensionless characteristic rolling speed Uch=0.0372W1.50/G. In this case, the central EHL film thickness in line contact EHL predicted by the conventional EHL theory may be several orders of magnitudes higher than that accurately predicted. This difference may be greater for heavier loads.The present results for line contact EHL based on the Newtonian fluid model show that in line contact EHL, for relatively heavy loads and the dimensionless rolling speed lower than the dimensionless characteristic rolling speed Uch=0.0372W1.50/G, the EHL analysis needs to further incorporate the lubricant non‐continuum effect across the film thickness in part of the lubricated area to investigate the EHL film thickness and the EHL film pressure in the contact in this very low film thickness condition; only the results based on such an analysis are believable for the EHL stage where the lubricant film thickness in the Hertzian zone approaches to zero and then vanishes; the results for EHL based on the Newtonian fluid model is unable to conclude that the EHL film thickness in the Hertzian zone is zero and dry contact occurs between the contact surfaces in EHL in any operating condition for ignoring the lubricant non‐continuum regime governing the EHL stage preceding the occurrence of the zero lubricant film thickness in EHL.

Practical implications

A very useful source of information for academic scientists, engineers and tribologists who are engaged in the study and application of the theory of elastohydrodynamic lubrication.

Originality/value

A derivation is first carried out for the isothermal EHL of line contacts in extremely heavy loads or extremely low rolling speeds by taking the Grubin‐type EHL inlet zone analysis by the present paper. Results and conclusions on the load‐carrying capacity of EHL in these operating conditions are first strict and thus convincing. These results are also original in clarifying the future trends of the researches in EHL and mixed EHL.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of structural parameters of oil groove (such as central angle number, depth and so on) on pressure, flow, load capacity and transmitted torque between friction pairs of hydro-viscous clutch.

Design/methodology/approach

According to the working process of friction pairs of hydro-viscous clutch, mathematical models of hydrodynamic load capacity and torque transmitted by the oil film were built based on viscosity-temperature property. Then analytical solutions of pressure, flow, load capacity and transmitted torque were obtained; effects of central angle of oil groove zone and friction contact zone, oil film thickness, number of oil grooves on pressure, flow, load capacity and torque were studied theoretically.

Findings

The research found that the central angle of oil groove zone, number of oil grooves and oil groove depth have similar effects on flow, which means that with the increase of central angle, number or depth of oil grooves, the flow also increases; pressure in friction contact zone and oil groove zone drops along radial direction, whereas its value in oil groove zone is higher. With the increase of the central angle of oil groove zone, pressure in friction contact zone and friction contact zone rises, and the load capacity increases, whereas the transmitted torque drops. Number of oil grooves has little effect on load capacity. When the oil film thickness increases, its flow increases accordingly, whereas the pressure, load capacity and transmitted torque drops. Meanwhile, the transmitted torque decreases with the increase of number of oil grooves, whereas the oil groove depth nearly has no effects on transmitted torque.

Originality/value

In this paper, mathematical models of hydrodynamic load capacity and torque transmitted by oil film were built based on viscosity-temperature property in the working process of hydro-viscous clutch, and their analytical solutions were obtained; effects of structural parameters of oil groove on transmission characteristics of hydro-viscous clutch based on viscosity-temperature property were revealed. The research results are of great value to the theory development of hydro-viscous drive technology, the design of high-power hydro-viscous clutch and relative control strategy.

Abstract

This paper studies elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) of line contacts for the slide‐roll ratios 0‐2 based on the assumptions of interfacial shear strength and interfacial slip. It is shown that the viscoelastic, viscoplastic and non‐continuum fluids distribute from the inlet zone to the Hertzian contact zone in order for a given operating condition when the load and rolling speed exceed critical values. For the rolling speed below the critical, the distributing fluids from the inlet zone to the Hertzian contact zone in order are viscoelastic and non‐continuum when the load exceeds a critical value. These show a multirheological behavior EHL film, formed in a contact, which may represent a mode of mixed lubrication. For this mode of lubrication, the fluid model should handle both inlet and Hertzian contact zones where the fluids are, respectively, continuum and non‐continuum. A new EHL analysis and theory, therefore needs to be established.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this paper is to study the effect of a commercial lubricant, which contains a 50‐50 mixture of zinc diamyldithiocarbamate and petroleum oil, on the fretting corrosion of tin‐plated copper alloy contacts.

Design/methodology/approach

The change in contact resistance as a function of fretting cycles was used to assess the effectiveness of the lubricant in preventing the fretting corrosion of tin‐plated contacts. The surface profile, surface roughness, extent of fretting damage and extent of oxidation of the contact zone were assessed by a laser scanning microscope and surface analytical techniques to correlate the change in contact resistance with fretting cycles.

Findings

The lubricant film provides a surface coverage of 6.76±1 mg/cm2 and it easily establishes metallic asperity contact between the mated tin‐plated contacts. The contact resistance of lubricated contacts remains stable for several thousand fretting cycles. Lubricated contacts reach a threshold value of 0.1 Ω around 100,000 cycles, whereas unlubricated contact reaches this value around 13,500 cycles itself. For lubricated contacts, the extent of mechanical wear of the tin coating is significantly reduced. As a result, they experience a lesser damage at the contact zone and exhibit a smoother profile. The formation of tin oxide is not appreciable and there is no oxide accumulation at the contact zone even at 380,000 cycles. The lubricant is very effective in delaying the fretting wear during the initial stages and in preventing the oxidation and accumulation of oxidation products at the contact zone in the later stages.

Originality/value

Metallic dialkyldithiocarbamates are useful anti‐wear and extreme pressure additives for lubricating oils. Dithiocarbamates improve the antioxidant properties of the lubricants and are effective in reducing the wear and increasing the friction‐reducing and load‐carrying ability of the base stock. The use of molybdenum dithiocarbamate as a grease additive is found to be effective in reducing fretting corrosion of ball bearings under random rotary vibrating conditions. The effect of dithiocarbamate containing lubricant oils or greases on the fretting corrosion of electrical contacts has not far been studied. The paper explores the effect of a lubricant that contains a 50‐50 mixture of petroleum oil and zinc diamyldithiocarbamate on the fretting corrosion of tin‐plated contact.

Abstract

Purpose

To review, analyze and present the effects of the contact‐fluid interfacial shear strength and contact‐fluid interfacial slippage and the critical importance of these effects in elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL).

Design/methodology/approach

The experimental and theoretical research results of the contact‐fluid interfacial shear strength and its caused contact‐fluid interfacial slippage in hydrodynamic lubrication and especially in EHL obtained in the past decades and progressed in recent years by the present author and by others are reviewed. Analysis and presentation are made on both the contact‐fluid interfacial shear strength versus fluid pressure curve for a given bulk fluid temperature in an isothermal EHL and the influence of the bulk fluid temperature on this curve.

Findings

It is very clearly and well understood from the present paper that the value of the contact‐fluid interfacial shear strength in the inlet zone in an EHL contact, i.e. at low EHL fluid film pressures is usually low and usually has rather a weak dependence on the EHL fluid film pressure. This proves the correctness of the EHL theories previously developed by the author based on the assumption of this low value and dependence on the EHL fluid film pressure of the contact‐fluid interfacial shear strength. It is also very clearly understood that the bulk fluid temperature usually has a strong influence on the value of the contact‐fluid interfacial shear strength in EHL and the increase of this temperature usually significantly reduces the value of the contact‐fluid interfacial shear strength in EHL.

Practical implications

A very useful material for the engineers who are engaged in the design of EHL on gears, cams and roller bearings, and for the tribology scientists who thrust efforts in studying EHL and mixed EHL both by theoretical modeling and by experiments.

Originality/value

A new and generalized mode of mixed EHL is originally proposed by incorporating the finding of a more realistic mode of the contact regimes in a practical mixed EHL based on the contact‐fluid interfacial shear strength and contact‐fluid interfacial slippage effects. This mode of mixed EHL should become the direction of the theoretical research of mixed EHL in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper's aim is to predict numerically the contact temperatures between two rough sliding bodies and to compare with the experimental results.

Design/methodology/approach

An elastic contact algorithm is used to analyze the normal contact between two nominally smooth surfaces. The algorithm evaluates real contact area using digitized roughness data and the corresponding contact pressure distribution. Using finite element method a steady state 3D temperature distribution at the interface between the sliding bodies is obtained. Using infrared (IR) imaging technique, experiments were carried out to measure the contact temperature distribution between rough rubbing bodies with a systematic variation of surface roughness and operating variables.

Findings

Contact temperature distributions over a wide range of normal load, sliding velocity and surface roughness have been obtained. It was seen that the maximum contact temperature expectedly increases with surface roughness (Sa values), normal load and sliding velocity. The results also indicate that the “hot spots” are located exactly at the positions where the contact pressures are extremely high. Temperatures can be seen to fall drastically at areas where no asperity contacts were established. The temperature contours at different depths were also plotted and it was observed that the temperatures fall away from the actual contact zone and relatively high temperatures persist at the “hot spot” zones much below the contact surface. Finally it is encouraging to find a good correlation between the numerical and experimental results and this indicates the strength of the present analysis.

Research limitations/implications

Experimental accuracy can be improved by using a thermal imaging camera that measures emissivity in situ and uses it to find the contact temperature. The spatial resolution and the response time of the camera also need to be improved. This can improve the correlation between numerical and experimental results.

Practical implications

One of the major factors attributed to the failure of sliding components is the frictional heating and the resulting flash temperatures at the sliding interface. However, it is not easy to measure such temperatures owing to the inherent difficulties in accessing the contact zone. Besides, thermal imaging techniques can be applied only with such tribo‐pairs where at least one of the contacting materials is transparent to IR radiation. In practice, such cases are a rarity. However, the good correlation observed between the numerical and experimental results in this work would give the practicing engineer a confidence to apply the numerical model directly and calculate contact temperatures for any tribo‐material pairs that are generally seen around.

Originality/value

A good correlation between the numerical and experimental results gives credence to the fact that the numerical model can be used to predict contact temperatures between any sliding tribo‐pairs.

Purpose

Paint that is used as exterior finish is subject to the stresses of the climate. The factors of climate such as sun and rain are major source of quick deterioration of paint. The existence of saline air and endogenic salt in substrates in any environment will increase the rate of failure and frequency of repainting of building exterior wall. The purpose of this paper is to ascertain the difference in the frequency of repainting of exterior surface of buildings in areas at close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the hinterland.

Design/methodology/approach

The research adopted a survey method that involved the administration of structured questionnaire on 384 respondents to elicit data for analysis. SPSS 15.0 software was used to analyse the data. The study area is divided into two zones.

Findings

Paint of the same quality from the same manufacturer is found to perform differently. All defects that are caused by salt attack occur earlier in Zone B than Zone A. The frequency of repainting (maintenance) in Zone A is two years due to direct contact with the Atlantic Ocean and Zone B is four years because of the distance from the ocean.

Practical implications

This study enlightens the stakeholders in the building industry in the preparation of maintenance schedule for buildings in salty environment. It will also assist the architects in decision making during specifications of exterior finishes in such environments. The maintenance challenges of paint that is applied as exterior finish in salty environment is made clear.

Originality/value

It is a novel search into understanding the maintenance frequency of paint that is applied as exterior finish of buildings in areas with direct and indirect contact to salt attack.

This paper explores four works of contemporary fiction to illuminate formal and informal regulation of sex. The paper’s co-authors frame analysis with the story of their creation of a transdisciplinary course, entitled “Regulating Sex: Historical and Cultural Encounters,” in which students mined literature for social critique, became immersed in the study of law and its limits, and developed increased sensitivity to power, its uses, and abuses. The paper demonstrates the value theoretically and pedagogically of third-wave feminisms, wild zones, and contact zones as analytic constructs and contends that including sex and sexualities in conversations transforms personal experience, education, society, and culture, including law.

Abstract

Purpose

Develop a new three‐dimensional discrete element code (BLOKS3D) for efficient simulation of polyhedral particles of any size. The paper describes efficient algorithms for the most important ingredients of a discrete element code.

Design/methodology/approach

New algorithms are presented for contact resolution and detection (including neighbor search and contact detection sections), contact point and force detection, and contact damping. In contact resolution and detection, a new neighbor search algorithm called TLS is described. Each contact is modeled with multiple contact points. A non‐linear force‐displacement relationship is suggested for contact force calculation and a dual‐criterion is employed for contact damping. The performance of the algorithm is compared to those currently available in the literature.

Findings

The algorithms are proven to significantly improve the analysis speed. A series of examples are presented to demonstrate and evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms and the overall discrete element method (DEM) code.

Originality/value

Long computational times required to simulate large numbers of particles have been a major hindering factor in extensive application of DEM in many engineering applications. This paper describes an effort to enhance the available algorithms and further the engineering application of DEM.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of different cross-sectional shapes (rectangular, trapezoidal, oval and triangular) and layout forms of oil grooves (radial, circumferential, inclined, compound, helical and double-helical), and determine the optimal section shape and layout form of oil grooves on the temperature field.

Design/methodology/approach

Heat conduction theory model was established based on startup characteristics and friction heat principle of hydro-viscous clutch (HVC), and then the theoretical expression of angular velocity of the friction pair and control pressure were deduced, and the heat flux and its distribution on friction disk and separator disk were calculated. Finally, the finite element method was used to solve the temperature field of the friction pair.

Findings

The studies show that the circumferential oil groove got the highest temperature, and on the surface of all other structures, hot spots appear with different sizes and temperatures, and the maximum temperature difference in the friction zone is about 3°C, and in the oil groove zone is about 16°C, wherein the compound oil groove has the lowest average temperature. This research shows that the compound oil groove with rectangular cross-section is the best choice for the friction pair.

Originality/value

In this paper, it was found that the compound oil groove with rectangular cross-section is the best choice for the friction pair, and it provided a favorable theory reference and technical support for the structural design of the friction pair and optimized design of the high-power HVC.
