As Comaroff and Comaroff argue, in their discussion of the intersection of ethnographical research and historical perspectives, social change is a dynamic process in which existing social and political tensions, local and global, are played out, with an uncertain outcome. Change is often about how competing groups come to power (Comaroff & Comaroff, 1992). Consumer researchers have already applied this perspective on class, consumption, and change in places as widespread as Niger and the US, but not to Eastern Europe.

Abstract

Innovations in technology and evolution of internet elicited the usage of technology and internet during the shopping process of consumers. Changes in consumer shopping processes opened doors for shifts in consumer buying behavior. As a result of the variations in consumer buying behavior, retailers formed new channel structures to fulfill customer requirements. New channel structures created different retailing formats and enhanced the complexity of retailing processes. As the complexity of retailing processes increased, complexity of consumer shopping behavior increased as well. In this sense, multichannel retailing emerged and expanded all around the world and paved the way for omnichannel retailing. Transformation of multichannel retailing to omnichannel retailing created two different shopping forms as: Showrooming and Webrooming. In this chapter, showrooming and webrooming concepts will be studied and the complementarity dimensions of these concepts will be explained in detail.

Purpose – This chapter addresses the transformation of patient into consumer, focusing on the specific population of human egg recipients. This work also analyzes medicine, and reproductive medicine and egg donation specifically, as marketplaces, particularly as they function in the Internet environment.

Methodology – This chapter utilizes a content analysis of egg donation related websites using both inductive and deductive coding schemes.

Findings – Egg donation related websites and their practices do indeed fit the model of a reproductive medicine marketplace, particularly those practices related to marketing strategies and cost.

Originality/value – This work focuses on the Internet as a primary location for a reproductive medicine marketplace, and develops a new understanding of the ways in which consumers are transformed by and operate in this market. It also demonstrates the emerging need for policy to govern this marketplace.

Abstract

Purpose – The first purpose of this chapter is to better understand, and to propose a means to understand the ways selves are constructed in daily contingencies during consumption experiences. To do so, the second purpose, which aims to bring an additional contribution, is to investigate the materiality of consumer experiences in a technological context.

Methodology/approach – We have investigated materiality (as conceptualized by Miller) of experiences in online discussion forums in a community of video games enthusiasts. Grounded theory is elaborated from an ethnography mixing interviews and nonparticipative online observation. The focus is on consumers' perceptions of their constructions as subjects in relationship to the various objects and practices they face.

Findings – The process through which subjects are contingently constructed follows three intertwined logics. Each of these logics, namely (1) finding a position, (2) building “appropriation logics” and accomplishing practices, and (3) enacting meaning empowerments, is detailed in its specific contingencies and modalities.

Research limitations/implications – Contribution of this research relies mostly on findings from one online community.

Practical implications – This research opens new ways to understand technological consumption experiences as they are lived by consumers, and it allows for an understanding of structuration in experiences characterized beforehand by their indeterminacy.

Originality/value of chapter – This chapter belongs to the few ones that propose a methodological approach to tackle with the construction of the self in daily contingencies and with dynamic materiality. It also opens new ways to de-essentialize ordinary consumption activities.

Abstract

Using the perspectives of dramaturgy and symbolic interactionists like George Herbert Mead and Carl Couch this study focuses on paid sex work in the hypermodern, virtual world of Second Life. Using seventeen semi-structured interviews and six months of ethnographic fieldwork, I find that the employment of sexual scripts, carrying off a successful erotic scene, and the creative use of communication and embodiment are highly valued in escorts’ performance of Second Life sex work. Escorts craft an online persona that is a digital representation of the self, which is manifested in the embodiment of their digital body or avatar. In addition to digital representations of the physical self, Second Life allows for multiple methods of computer-mediated communication, and escorts are able to re-embody the first life body through the trading of first life pictures, voice cybersex, and web cam cybersex. The data allow the conclusion that most escorts are unwilling to re-embody the first life body for reasons of personal safety and the desire to restrict access to the first life self. I find, however, that there is a porous boundary between first life and Second Life in which the first life self comes through in the Second Life persona. In the concluding remarks, I explore the implications this study has for the negotiation of privacy for new social media actors who are reluctant to fully disclose their lives yet perform a persistent, archived persona for friends and followers on the Internet. This study contributes to a small, but growing, body of literature on Second Life and expands the existing work on embodiment and privacy in the digital realm.

Introduction: A few months after the observation of the first COVID-19 case in Wuhan in the Hubei province of China on 17 November 2019, the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic on 11 March 2020. With the emergence of the pandemic, it has still been uncertain how long the negative economic effects of the pandemic will last around the world. The introduction of full or partial curfews in many countries has led the COVID-19 pandemic to significantly change consumer behaviour and reshape many industries.

Purpose: Recently, the whole world has faced the COVID-19 pandemic, and during the pandemic, consumers’ needs, activities, consumption behaviours have begun to change. In this study, it is aimed to investigate changes in consumer behaviour with the spread of COVID-19 all over the world and the rise of digital transformations with these changes. Thus, ideas about social trends can be obtained by gathering detailed information about changing consumer behaviours. Additionally, advice is given to businesses on how to turn difficult conditions brought about by the pandemic into an advantage thanks to the opportunities offered by the digital age.

Methodology: In this review study, first of all, national and international studies on changing consumer behaviours during the pandemic process were examined, and changes in the pandemic process were discussed. Additionally, the results of studies that have measured the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak on consumer behaviour and studies including developments in terms of digital transformation were also examined within the scope of the review.

Findings: Uncertainty, risk and fear, created by COVID-19 and the present measures of the New Normal have led to some changes in both consumer behaviour and many industries. Based on this, within the scope of this study, the changing behaviour of consumers in the COVID-19 pandemic process and its aftermath and the rise of digital transformation were examined, and predictions for the future were determined.

Abstract

It is evident that while new technologies are shifting the current dynamics of the marketplace, technological innovations and Industry 4.0 are influencing the marketing activities along with our perceptions and expectations. The effects of globalization, digitalization, and Internet on marketing activities and consumers are indisputable. Almost every person, society, organization, and even the government has experienced some sense of transformation as a result of the increased connectivity and interaction. Discussion of the current concepts, theories, the way they are used in understanding the technology adoption behavior, and their role in the transformation of the consumers in the digital age is necessary in order to understand the aforementioned changes happening in the marketplace. It is also essential to focus on the transformation of marketing applications caused by Industry 4.0 in order to better understand the consumer expectations, reactions, and behavior. Hence, this study aims to investigate how Industry 4.0 affected and transformed marketing and consumer behavior, by examining the recent technological innovations. In this chapter, the basic concepts related to technology and innovation adoption are explained, and the relationship between marketing and Industry 4.0 is discussed. After reviewing the recent technological innovations and their relation to consumer behavior, a general discussion is given.

Abstract

Purpose: The present research draws from neomaterialist theories to investigate women’s erotic consumption in Brazil, analyzing several stages of the consumption cycle, from need detection to disposal.

Methodology/Approach: Fieldwork followed the Itinerary Method, with 35 in-depth interviews and participant observation.

Findings: In addition to providing thick description of two consumption cycle stages, the chapter analyzes assemblages of material objects and people that are part of erotic consumption. The dialectical process that transforms consumers through the agency of erotic products also transforms products through repurpose or personification – as lovers, butlers, or party crashers – which, in turn, highlights these objects’ agentic nature. Erotic products are understood as possessing social life and death.

Practical Implications: This research uncovered a series of transformations performed by the object on the consumer (i.e., objectification of the consumer) and vice versa (i.e., personification of the object). These processes help understand tensions inherent to networks and assemblages formed during erotic consumption. They also suggest, along the consumption cycle, unmet consumer needs that may be tended to by industry, like disposal issues.

Social Implications: This study broadly aims at helping women to more freely exercise their sexuality (with the mediation of erotic products if they so desire) in a Latin-American patriarchal society where double moral standards regarding men and women still prevail.

Originality/Value of Chapter: This is one of the first studies conducted within consumer culture theory that focuses specifically on sexuality related consumption.
