Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine the impact of corporate brand equity and corporate brand credibility on customer’s intention to donate the charity program. To understand the complex relationship, this study points out the moderating effect of the materialistic attitude.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical study involved a survey of young customers in Indonesia telecommunication industry. The data collection involved face-to-face interviews among 409 respondents in Jakarta Indonesia between December 2015 and January 2016.

Findings

This study indicates a positive impact of corporate brand equity and brand credibility on their customers’ intention to support the social charity. However, materialistic attitude slightly changes the impact direction of corporate brand on the customers’ intention to participate.

Research limitations/implications

This research relies on a cross-sectional observation, which was one snapshoot observation in specific time. Second, this study uses interview to help the respondents understand the questionnaires; this may imply on the level of objectiveness of respondents.

Practical/implications

This paper extends the discussion on the altruism theory and corporate brands by establishing a critical linkage between materialistic attitude, corporate brand credibility and consumers’ intention to charity. Under high materialistic attitude, corporations are encouraged to promote strong business ethics.

Originality/value

This study makes a contribution to the deepening understanding on altruism theory and conscious corporate responsibility through raising a concern on marketing practices, which entails a potential fraud from charity ethics.

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to introduce and provide an overview of the topic of corporate social responsibility (CSR). The approach is to present an introduction to the importance of the topic and a review of the concept’s evolution and development which includes an exploration of the topic’s meaning and competing and complementary frameworks which are related. Among these related concepts are the following: business ethics, stakeholder management, sustainability, corporate citizenship, creating shared value, conscious capitalism, and purpose-driven business. These concepts are frequently used interchangeably with CSR, and they have more in common than differences. At their core, each embraces value, balance, and accountability. The chapter also explores a number of key research avenues that are quite contemporary. Among these, the following topics are addressed: political CSR; the CSP–CFP relationship and business case for CSR; upstream/downstream CSR; CSR in emerging economies, corporate social activism, and corporate social irresponsibility. In the final analysis, it is argued that the topic of CSR continues to be on an upward and sustainable trajectory in both conceptual development and practice.

Abstract

To determine the new responsibility and new form of CSR required in an evolving ecosystem, this chapter covers the historical evolution of CSR including the various additional labels CSR has attracted, and its many surrogate, complementary, and alternative terms and themes. Some parties still view CSR as just a form of Philanthropy; however, current definitions for CSR involve many components, which have adapted over time. The new CSR definition provided by the European Commission in 2011, for example, mirrors some of the changes created by the inclusion of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in 2015. The creation of shared and integrated value and the ongoing development of the social enterprise industry are further developments, alongside the growing trend toward B-Corp registration, the increasing emphasis on ‘business-for-purpose’ and the rise of the ‘be the change’ movement. This chapter discusses this journey and reveals how CSR has followed a cycle of social movements through several industrial revolutions. As we head toward the Fourth Industrial Revolution and usher in the new era for Globalization 4.0, this requires new business models, new labels, and new adaptations of CSR. These concepts are introduced in this chapter and developed further in later chapters.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the relation between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and disclosure transparency by examining over 12,000 disclosures of financial statements extending over 20 years. The purpose is to understand how CSR ratings relate to the level of disaggregation in financial statement line items. The study considers additional factors, such as firm size and governance, that can accentuate or moderate this relation.

Design/methodology/approach

This study applies regression analysis, including interactions, to test the magnitude of the relation between CSR ratings and disclosure transparency. CSR is measured as a composite score that ranks firms on their reputation over numerous indicators compiled by Morgan Stanley Capital International. Disclosure transparency is measured as the level of disaggregation in financial statement line items.

Findings

The study reveals evidence consistent with the notion that firms which are more CSR conscious are also more transparent with financial statements. Evidence shows that the level of transparency is more sensitive to changes in CSR for firms less CSR conscious. Firm size is found to moderate this relation, whereas enhanced governance accentuates it.

Originality/value

There is limited research on the relation between CSR ratings and disclosure transparency. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first empirical evidence on the relation between CSR ratings and the disaggregation of financial statement line items. Results from this study help us understand the drivers of disclosure transparency, which can aid regulators, investors and other stakeholders in knowing how such drivers impact managerial decisions on the disaggregation of financial statements. Accountants play a central role in producing transparent and disaggregated accounting disclosures, and their role is pivotal in effectively integrating CSR into accounting and reporting models.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary objective of this study was to understand the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility on Employee Green Behavior, examining the mediating role played by Green Human Resource Management Practices and the moderating influence of Employee Green Culture.

Design/methodology/approach

To accomplish this, a careful research approach was taken, using a thoughtfully designed random sampling method to encompass 300 banking employees, ensuring a robust representation of the diverse workforce in the banking sector.

Findings

The empirical findings identified green human resource management practices as a pivotal mediator and employee green culture as a significant moderator. It elucidated how the strategic implementation of green human resource management practices can act as an amplifier, strengthening the positive effects of corporate social responsibility on employee green behavior. This insight underscores the strategic importance of aligning human resource practices with sustainability goals to further enhance the environmental consciousness of employees. It was revealed that the presence of a nurturing organizational culture, one that encourages and supports environmentally responsible behaviors can significantly bolster the association between corporate social responsibility and green behavior among employees.

Originality/value

These findings underscore the essential role of organizational culture as a catalyst for the successful implementation of corporate social responsibility initiatives and the cultivation of a sustainable corporate ethos. This comprehensive research underscores the profound significance of corporate social responsibility, green human resource management practices and employee green culture in fostering and promoting environmentally responsible behaviors within the banking industry. These findings hold substantial implications not only for businesses but also for policymakers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine how much the basic tenets of conscious capitalism could favor organizational change and anticorruption strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper questions the vagueness of the tenets and principles of conscious capitalism. It unveils the idealized worldview of conscious capitalism, as it is based on a “pseudo-humanistic and pseudo-holistic” philosophy. The paper analyzes various kinds of rationale for justifying anticorruption measures and explains how the conscious capitalism movement should assume the challenge to develop one or the other rationale.

Findings

The conscious capitalism movement does not have basic rationale for any self-justified discourse about anticorruption measures. The principles of conscious capitalism organizations can be coherent with a rationale of individual and organizational compliance. They could be suitable with a rationale of legal, industry and international compliance. We could expect that the principles of conscious capitalism allow radical changes in the organizational culture. However, the main principles of conscious capitalism are not explicitly related to any rationale for a corporate self-justified discourse about anticorruption measures.

Research limitations/implications

The three kinds of rationale for corporate self-justified discourse about anticorruption measures are not exhaustive. There can be other kinds of corporate rationale. Moreover, the conscious capitalism movement appeared in 2000s and is still evolving. So, we should never take for granted that the present ideals and principles of conscious capitalism will never be improved and deepened.

Originality/value

The paper explains how the conscious capitalism movement remains unable to present its rationale for justifying anticorruption measures. In doing so, it provides three kinds of rationale that conscious capitalism organizations could use to develop their corporate self-justified discourse about anticorruption policies, measures and programs.

Stakeholder paradigm has been gaining currency over the past few decades and technological breakthroughs have been influential in building its momentum. Hyper-Transparency is emerging as a building block and as an indispensable concomitant of stakeholder paradigm. The crux of a Hyper-Transparent organization is trust. The new paradigm requires substituting translucent and opaque business practices with fully transparent ones under which lasting trust can be built between the organization and its stakeholders. However, the nub of the stakeholder paradigm is the changes inside the organizations as well as changes in relation to their external environment, and transparency is both a driver and a resultant of these changes. Abstract

The Supreme Court order dated July 19,2004, ordering relief for Bhopal gas victims is a case of the long arm of justice 20 years after the event. The leakage of a poisonous gas, Methyl Isocynate (MIC) from the pesticide plant of Union Carbide India Ltd, Bhopal, on December 3, 1984,resulted in a loss of 10,000 lives and permanently disabled nearly 50,000 people. This tragedy raises some serious corporate social responsibility issues to be addressed by manufacturing Companies, in their responsibility towards the community and environment. Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine whether corporate stconcerns on social responsibility issues pressurize corporate managers to act in a socially responsible way and how this affects corporate value.

Design/methodology/approach

This study follows previous studies such as Wu et al. (2008) and Jiang and Huang (2011) in using the research model.

Findings

The analysis shows that in regions where large attention paid to demolitions, corporate managers are under great pressure from corporate stakeholders and they thus act in more socially responsible ways; this, in turn, results in higher corporate values. Furthermore, in regions in which demolition events attract more attention, the increase in corporate value is relatively small for state-owned enterprises and unprofitable listed enterprises.

Originality/value

The findings demonstrate that internet governance heightens corporate stakeholders’ awareness of social responsibility, and this leads to pressure on corporate relative behaviors to satisfy the requests of corporate stakeholders, leading to an increase in corporate value and improvement in social welfare.
