Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to study laminar fluid flow and convective heat transfer in a conical gap at small conicity angles up to 4° for the case of disk rotation with a fixed cone.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the improved asymptotic expansion method developed by the author was applied to the self-similar Navier–Stokes equations. The characteristic Reynolds number ranged from 0.001 to 2.0, and the Prandtl numbers ranged from 0.71 to 10.

Findings

Compared to previous approaches, the improved asymptotic expansion method has an accuracy like the self-similar solution in a significantly wider range of Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. Including radial thermal conductivity in the energy equation at small conicity angle leads to insignificant deviations of the Nusselt number (maximum 1.23%).

Practical implications

This problem has applications in rheometry to experimentally determine viscosity of liquids, as well as in bioengineering and medicine, where cone-and-disk devices serve as an incubator for nurturing endothelial cells.

Social implications

The study can help design more effective devices to nurture endothelial cells, which regulate exchanges between the bloodstream and the surrounding tissues.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, for the first time, novel approximate analytical solutions were obtained for the radial, tangential and axial velocity components, flow swirl angle on the disk, tangential stresses on both surfaces, as well as static pressure, which varies not only with the Reynolds number but also across the gap. These solutions are in excellent agreement with the self-similar solution.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper is devoted to prepare micro-cone structure with variable cross-section size by Stereo Lithography Appearance (SLA)-based 3D additive manufacturing technology. It is mainly focused on analyzing the forming mechanism of equipment and factors affecting the forming quality and accuracy, investigating the influence of forming process parameters on the printing quality and optimization of the printing quality. This study is expected to provide a µ-SLA surface preparation technology and process parameters selection with low cost, high precision and short preparation period for microstructure forming.

Design/methodology/approach

The µ-SLA process is optimized based on the variable cross-section micro-cone structure printing. Multi-index analysis method was used to analyze the influence of process parameters. The process parameter influencing order is determined and validated with flawless micro array structure.

Findings

After the optimization analysis of the top diameter size, the bottom diameter size and the overall height, the influence order of the printing process parameters on the quality of the micro-cone forming is: exposure time (B), print layer thickness (A) and number of vibrations (C). The optimal scheme is A1B3C1, that is, the layer thickness of 5 µm, the exposure time of 3000 ms and the vibration of 64x. At this time, the cone structure with the bottom diameter of 50 µm and the cone angle of 5° could obtain a better surface structure.

Originality/value

This study is expected to provide a µ-SLA surface preparation technology and process parameters selection with low cost, high precision and short preparation period for microstructure forming.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is that the modular mobile robots reformed the multimachine joint mode to achieve obstacle-crossing, climbing and other multifunctional inspection in unstructured environment under the connection of the cone–hole docking mechanism.

Design/methodology/approach

An arc-shaped docking cone head with a posture-maintaining spring and two arc-shaped connecting rods that formed a ring round hole were designed to achieve large tolerance docking. Before active locking, the coordination between structures was used to achieve passive locking, which mitigated the docking impact of modular robots in unstructured environment. Using the locking ring composed of the two arc-shaped connecting rods, open-loop and closed-loop motion characteristics were obtained through the mutual motion of the connecting rod and the sliding block to achieve active locking, which not only ensured high precision docking, but also achieved super docking stability.

Findings

The cone–hole docking mechanism had the docking tolerance performance of position deviation of 6mm and pitch deviation of 8° to achieve docking of six degrees of freedom (6-DOF), which had a load capacity of 230 N to achieve super docking stability. Under the connection of the cone–hole docking mechanism, the modular mobile robots reformed the multimachine joint mode to achieve obstacle-crossing, climbing and other multifunctional inspection in unstructured environment.

Originality/value

Based on mechanical analysis of universal models, a cone–hole docking mechanism combining active and passive functions, six-dimensional constraints could be implemented, was proposed in this paper. The characteristics of the posture-maintaining spring in the cone docking head and the compression spring at the two ends of two arc-shaped connecting rods were used to achieve docking with large tolerance. Passive locking and active locking modules were designed, mitigating impact load and the locking did not require power to maintain, which not only ensured high precision docking, but also achieved super docking stability.

Abstract

Purpose

The fluid flow and heat transfer between a rotating cone above a stretching disk is the prime purpose of the current work. Making use of suitable similarity transformations, it is shown that the physical phenomenon is represented by a system of similarity equations, which is compatible with that of literature in the absence of wall expansion.

Design/methodology/approach

Numerical simulation of the system enables us to seize the physical character of fluid filling the conical section as well as of the heat transfer, from small to adequately large gap sizes. How the surface expansion will contribute to the momentum and thermal layers; moreover, to the swirl angle from the disk wall, and heat transports from the cone and disk surfaces is studied in detail.

Findings

The results are clear evidences that the wall stretching completely changes the flow and heat behaviors within the conical gap. For instance, the centripetal/centrifugal flow properties of disk/cone are completely altered and the flow swirling angles are increased by means of the wall deformation.

Originality/value

The original value is that at small gap angles faster expansion of the wall overall leads to near-disk surface cooling, while causing the heated region near the cone surface, which has physical implications in practical applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the fluid flow and heat transfer within the Casson nanofluid confined between disk and cone both rotating with distinct velocities. For a comprehensive investigation, two distinct nano-size particles, namely, silicon dioxide and silicon carbide, are submerged in ethanol taken as the base fluid.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper explores the disk and cone contraption mostly encountered for viscosity measurement in various industrial applications such as lubrication industry, hydraulic brakes, pharmaceutical industry, petroleum and gas industry and chemical industry.

Findings

It is worth mentioning here that the radially varying temperature profile at the disk surface is taken into the account. The effect of prominent emerging parameters on velocity fields and temperature distribution are studied graphically, while bar graphs are drawn to examine the physical quantities of industrial interest such as surface drag force and heat transfer rate at disk and cone.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no study in literature exists that discusses the thermal enhancement of nano-fluidic transport confined between disk and cone both rotating with distinct angular velocities with heat transfer.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study numerically the flow, heat transfer, and entropy generation of aqueous copper oxide-silver hybrid nanofluid over a down-pointing rotating vertical cone, with linear surface temperature (LST) and linear surface heat flux (LSHF), in the presence of a cross-magnetic field. In industrial applications, such as oil and gas plants, food industries, steel factories and nuclear packages, the real bodies may contain nonorthogonal walls and variable cross-section three-dimensional forms which this issue can clarify the importance of selective geometry in the present research.

Design/methodology/approach

The mass-based scheme is accomplished for the simulation, and the entropy generation and Bejan number will be analyzed in conjunction with the aforementioned model. It has been hypothesized that two types of boundary conditions (LST and LSHF) as well as five nanoparticle shapes (sphere, brick, cylinder, platelet and disk) present a collection of crucial results. The overseeing PDEs are changed over completely to the dimensionless ODEs, and these are solved by Runge–Kutta–Fehlberg approach combined with a shooting methodology for certain values of physical parameters.

Findings

Subsequent to the fantastic compromise of the computational outcomes with past reports, the outcomes are introduced to conduct the investigation of the hydrodynamics/thermal boundary layers, the skin friction and the Nusselt number, as well as entropy generation and Bejan number. A state of hybrid nanofluid, which exhibits a remarkable increase in heat transfer in comparison to the states of mono-nanofluid and regular fluid, has been found to have the highest Nusselt number; however, the skin friction values should always be taken into account and managed. The entropy generation improves with the mass of the second nanoparticle (silver), while the opposite pattern is exhibited for the Bejan number. Furthermore, the lowest value of entropy generation number belongs to the cylindrical shape of nanoparticles in the LST case. In final, a significant accomplishment of the current study is the accurate output of the mass-based scheme for an entropy analysis problem.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, for the first time, in this study, a new development of natural convective flow of a hybrid nanofluid about the warmed (LST and LSHF) and down-pointing rotating vertical cone by the mass-based algorithm has been presented. The applied methodology considers the masses of base fluid (water) and nanoparticles (Ag and CuO) as an alternative to the first and second nanoparticles volume fraction. Indeed, the combination use of the Tiwari–Das nanofluid model and the mass-based hybridity algorithm for the entropy generation analysis can be the main novelty of this work.

Abstract

This chapter aims to document the increase in cohabitation in the Southern Cone (Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay) between 2010 and 2021, to analyze the role played in it by certain associated factors such as changes in the educational level of the population, age structure, and income distribution, and to evaluate the importance of people’s preferences (in terms of ideas or values) for cohabitation versus marriage. The results suggest that the models of nuptiality identified in previous studies coexist in the region: the traditional and the modern one, while there is a convergence of the prevalence of cohabitation among social groups within countries. Furthermore, although the prevalence of cohabitation as a springboard to marriage cannot be rejected, there are indications that suggest the presence of perceptions and ideas favorable to cohabitation as an alternative form of family organization, closer to the predictions of the theory of the second demographic transition than to the postponement of the age of entry into marriage and the birth of children.

Abstract

Purpose

Sustainability has become a priority for companies due to pressure from multiple stakeholders. In an overly competitive market, shareholders push for economic results, allowing lean manufacturing to establish itself as dominant paradigm in manufacturing. However, concerns grow regarding how lean implementation can allow companies to achieve sustainable development goals, or, if the resources required for a successful lean implementation can result in a detriment of environmental and social performance. This paper intends to help close the knowledge gap regarding the effects of lean manufacturing on sustainable performance from a triple bottom line perspective, and how operational, environmental and social outcomes interact between themselves.

Design/methodology/approach

Two models for the interaction between lean and sustainability were proposed. The first is called the “sand-cone” model, which poses that performance improvements derived from lean are cumulative on each one of the sustainability dimensions. The second is called the “trade-offs” approach. In this case, the resources required to improve one dimension of sustainability clash with those required by the others. Data were gathered from a sample of 133 Colombian metalworking companies and processed using structural equations models.

Findings

The results support the cumulative “sand-cone”, which follows a sequence of operational-environmental-social improvement in the presence of lean. For the “trade-offs” model, partial evidence suggests that they can occur in detriment of social performance.

Originality/value

The “sand-cone” and “trade-offs” are empirically tested for the first time in the context of sustainability, providing further knowledge into its interaction with lean manufacturing. The models’ results contribute to practitioners by providing a tested path for companies to improve their performance in a cumulative sequence that will provide better long-term results.

Abstract

Purpose

This present research aims to identify the optimum process parameters for enhancing geometric accuracy in single-point incremental forming of aviation-grade superalloy 625.

Design/methodology/approach

The geometric accuracy has been measured in terms of half-cone-angle, concentricity, roundness and wall-straightness errors. The Taguchi Orthogonal-Array L9 with desirability-function-analysis has been used to achieve improved accuracy.

Findings

To achieve maximum geometric accuracy, the optimum setting having a tooltip diameter of 10 mm, a step-size of 0.2 mm and a tool rotation speed (TRS) of 900 RPM has been derived. With this setting, the half-cone-angle accuracy increases by 42.96%, the concentricity errors decrease by 47.36%, the roundness errors decline by 45.2% and the wall straightness errors reduce by 1.06%.

Practical implications

Superalloy 625 is a widespread nickel-based alloy, finding enormous applications in aerospace, marine and chemical industries.

Originality/value

It has been recommended to increase TRS, reduce step-size and use moderate size tooltip diameter to enhance geometric accuracy. Step-size has been found to be the governing parameter among all the parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide scientific guidance for the integration of industrialization and information (TIOII). In recent years, TIOII has promoted the development of intelligent manufacturing in China. However, many enterprises blindly invest in TIOII, which affects their normal production and operation.

Design/methodology/approach

This study establishes an efficiency evaluation model for TIOII. In this paper, entropy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) constraint cone and cross-efficiency are added based on traditional data envelopment analysis (DEA) model, and entropy AHP–cross-efficiency DEA model is proposed. Then, statistical analysis is carried out on the integration efficiency of enterprises in Guangzhou using cross-sectional data, and the traditional DEA model and entropy AHP–cross-efficiency DEA model are used to analyze the integration efficiency of enterprises.

Findings

The data show that the efficiency of enterprise integration is at a medium level in Guangzhou. The efficiency of enterprise integration has no significant relationship with enterprise size and production type but has a low negative correlation with the development level of enterprise integration. In addition, the improved DEA model can better reflect the real integration efficiency of enterprises and obtain complete ranking results.

Originality/value

By adding the entropy AHP constraint cone and cross-efficiency, the traditional DEA model is improved. The improved DEA model can better reflect the real efficiency of TIOII and obtain complete ranking results.
