Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the structural behaviour of fire-exposed unbraced composite frames. Designers to date paid little attention to unbraced one-bay composite frames as structural system. There are two main reasons for this. First, codes lack simplified methods for the fire design of these frames due to their sway and the linked P-Δ effects when subjected to fire, which complicates the design. Second, it is demanding to construct external composite joints for the regarded one-bay frames. Thus, external joints in composite constructions are mostly constructed as steel joints. Nevertheless, these frames offer advantages. These include increased usable space and flexibility in the building’s use, large spans, fast construction times and inherent fire resistance.
Design/methodology/approach
To profit from these benefits, two different external semi-rigid composite joint were developed for the considered one-bay composite frames. The first solution based on concrete-filled steel tube columns and the second on concrete-filled double skin tube columns. Furthermore, a numerical model was established to study the fire performance of unbraced composite frames. The model was validated against four fire tests on isolated composite joints and two large-scale fire tests on unbraced composite frames.
Findings
Overall, the predictions of the numerical model were in good agreement with the test results. Thus, the numerical model is appropriate for further investigations on the fire performance of unbraced composite frames.
Originality/value
The sequence of construction results in significant stresses in the steel section, which creates difficulties in numerical modelling and may account for the relatively few studies carried out at room temperature. For the fire design, there was, to the best knowledge of the author, to date no numerical model available that was capable of considering the sequence of construction.

Abstract
Purpose
Unbraced one-bay composite frames are an interesting load-bearing structure for buildings with up to three storeys. However, their fire design is demanding given the lack of simplified design methods. This paper aims to deepen the understanding of the load-bearing behaviour of both unbraced and braced frames when exposed to fire.
Design/methodology/approach
In a previous paper, a numerical model for the fire design of these frames was established and validated with good agreement against fire tests. In the current paper, this model was used to compare the typical differences between braced, semi-braced and unbraced composite frames under fire conditions. Further studies addressed the effect of different heating regimes, i.e. partial fire exposure of the columns in the frames and varying location of the ISO standard fire.
Findings
Numerical investigations showed that it is necessary to take local failure and deformation limits of the fire-exposed frames into account. On this basis, unbraced composite frames can compete with braced frames as they have to endure less thermal restraints than braced frames.
Originality/value
In contrast to other investigations on frames, the numerical model is able to take into account the shear failure, which is especially important within the frame corners. Using this model, it is shown that limited sway is reasonable to reduce thermal restraints and hence local stresses. In this regard, the concept of semi-rigid composite joints with a distinct amount of reinforcement has proven to be very rational in fire design.

Abstract
Purpose
Covering a fiber-reinforced concrete column (fiber reinforced plastic (FRP)) improves the performance of the column primarily. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the behavior of small FRP concrete columns that are subject to axial pressure loading, in order to study the effect of many parameters on the effectiveness of FRP couplings on circular and square concrete columns.
Design/methodology/approach
These parameters include the shape of the browser (circular and square), whole core and cavity, square radius of square columns, concrete strength (low strength, normal and high), type of FRP (carbon and glass) and number of FRP (1–3) layers. The effective fibrillation failure strain was investigated and the effect of effective lateral occlusion pressure.
Findings
The results of the test showed that the FRP-coated columns improved significantly the final conditions of both the circular and square samples compared to the unrestricted columns; however, improvement of square samples was not as prominent as improvement in circular samples. The results indicated that many parameters significantly affected the behavior of FRP-confined columns. A new model for predicting compressive force and the corresponding strain of FRP is presented. A good relationship is obtained between the proposed equations and the current experimental results.
Originality/value
The average hoop strain in FRP wraps at rupture in FRP-confined concrete specimens can be much lower than that given by tensile coupon tests, meaning the theoretical assumption that the FRP-confined concrete cylinder ruptures when the FRP material tensile strength attained at its maximum is not suitable. Based on this observation, the effective peak strength and corresponding strain formula for FRP concrete confined columns must be based on the effective hoop rupture strain composite materials.

Abstract
The concrete-filled double skin steel tubes (CFDST) column is a new type of steel composite structure column. At present, international and domestic research are still lacking in regards to this composite structure column. Therefore, a study of the composite structure column would have great theoretical and practical significance. In this paper, an experiment using concrete-filled double skin steel tubes columns with square-circular section is conducted under repeated loading and then under static axial compression. The test results show that the new type of composite structure column has excellent ductility and relatively good surplus bearing capacity. So, the test has laid a certain foundation for doing analysis and study on the new type of composite structure column in the future.

Abstract
Purpose
The author proposed a friction plunge micro-welding (FPMW) method and applied it to column grid array packaging to realize the connection of copper columns without precision molds assisted positioning. The purpose of this paper is to study the flow behavior of the solder undergoing frictional thermo-mechanical action during the FPMW and to determine the source of the solders in the micro-zones with different microstructure characteristics near the solder/Cu column friction interface.
Design/methodology/approach
Three kinds of Sn58Bi/SAC305 and SAC305/Pb90Sn composite solder samples were designed to study the flow behavior of the solder during FPMW using Bi and Pb as tracer elements.
Findings
The results show that most of the solders in the position occupied by the copper column was softened and plasticized during the welding process and was extruded to side of the copper column, flowing axially, circumferentially and radially along a trajectory similar to a conical spiral line. Under the drive of the tangential friction force and the radial hold-tight force, the extruded out visco-plastic solders fully mixed with the visco-plastic solders on the sides of the copper column, and bonded with the solders that deformed plastically on the periphery, so that a stir zone and a dynamic recrystallization zone finally evolved. The outside plastically deformed solders evolved into a thermo-mechanical affected zone.
Originality/value
The flow behavior of the solder during the FPMW was determined, as well as the source of the solders in micro-zones with different microstructure characteristics.

Abstract
Purpose
This article presents a geometrically non-linear finite element formulation for the analysis of planar two-layer beam-columns taking into account the inter-layer slip and uplift.
Design/methodology/approach
The co-rotational method is adopted, in which the motion of the element is decomposed into a rigid body motion and a small deformational one. The geometrically linear formulation can be used in the local frame and automatically be transformed into a geometrically nonlinear one. In co-rotational frame, both layers are assumed to be discretely connected at the element ends. Slips and uplifts are assumed to be small. Consequently, the condition of non interpenetration between the layers can be treated using a node-to-node contact algorithm. The resolution methods such as penalty (PM) and augmented Lagrangian method (ALM) with Uzawa updating scheme can be used.
Findings
The non-penetration condition between the layers of composite beams can be formulated by using contact law. It is found that despite a low convergence rate of augmented Lagrangian method compared to penalty method, the former prevents the unrealistic penetration. Besides, it is shown that the buckling load of the composite beam-column is largely affected by the uplift stiffness of the connectors.
Originality/value
The proposed finite element model is capable of simulating accurately the geometrically non-linear behavior of planar two-layer beam-columns taking into account the inter-layer slip and uplift. Regarding uplift, the non-penetration condition is strictly enforced by considering rigorous contact conditions at the interface. The constraint problem is solved using the penalty method or the augmented Lagrangian method with the Uzawa updating scheme.

Abstract
Purpose
Concrete-filled double skin tube (CFDST) columns are considered one of the most effective steel-concrete composite sections owing to the higher load carrying capacity as compared to its counterpart concrete-filled tube (CFT) columns. This paper aims to numerically investigate the performance of axially loaded, circular CFDST short columns, with the innovative strengthening technique of providing stiffeners in outer tubes. Circular steel hollow sections have been adopted for inner as well as outer tubes, while varying the length of rectangular steel stiffeners, fixed inside the outer tubes only, to check the effect of stiffeners in partially and full-length stiffened CFDST columns.
Design/methodology/approach
The behaviour of these CFDST columns is investigated numerically by using a verified finite element analysis (FEA) model from the ABAQUS. The behaviour of 20-unstiffened, 80-partially stiffened and 20-full-length stiffened CFDST columns is studied, while varying the strength of steel (fyo = 250–750 MPa) and concrete (30–90 MPa).
Findings
The FEA results are verified by comparing them with the previous test results. FEA study has exhibited that, there is a 7%–25% and 39%–49% increase in peak-loads in partially stiffened and full-length stiffened CFDST columns, respectively, compared to unstiffened CFDST columns.
Originality/value
Enhanced strength has been observed in partially stiffened and full-length stiffened CFDST columns as compared to unstiffened CFDST columns. Also, a significant effect of strength of concrete has not been observed as compared to the strength of steel.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to predict the fire resistance of steel-reinforced concrete columns by application of the genetic algorithm.
Design/methodology/approach
In total, 11 effective parameters are considered including mechanical and geometrical properties of columns and loading values as input parameters and the duration of concrete resistance at elevated temperatures as the output parameter. Then, experimental data of several studies – with extensive ranges – are collected and divided into two categories.
Findings
Using the first set of the data along with the gene expression programming (GEP), the fire resistance predictive model of steel-reinforced concrete (SRC) composite columns is presented. By application of the second category, evaluation and validation of the proposed model are investigated as well, and the correspondent time-temperature diagrams are derived.
Originality/value
The relative error of 10% and the R coefficient of 0.9 for the predicted model are among the highlighted results of this validation. Based on the statistical errors, a fair agreement exists between the experimental data and predicted values, indicating the appropriate performance of the proposed GEP model for fire resistance prediction of SRC columns.

Design/methodology/approach
Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns have gained popularity in construction in recent decades as they offer the benefit of constituent materials and cost-effectiveness. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Support Vector Machines (SVMs), Gene Expression Programming (GEP) and Decision Trees (DTs) are some of the approaches that have been widely used in recent decades in structural engineering to construct predictive models, resulting in effective and accurate decision making. Despite the fact that there are numerous research studies on the various parameters that influence the axial compression capacity (ACC) of CFST columns, there is no systematic review of these Machine Learning methods.
Findings
The implications of a variety of structural characteristics on machine learning performance parameters are addressed and reviewed. The comparison analysis of current design codes and machine learning tools to predict the performance of CFST columns is summarized. The discussion results indicate that machine learning tools better understand complex datasets and intricate testing designs.
Originality/value
This study examines machine learning techniques for forecasting the axial bearing capacity of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns. This paper also highlights the drawbacks of utilizing existing techniques to build CFST columns, and the benefits of Machine Learning approaches over them. This article attempts to introduce beginners and experienced professionals to various research trajectories.

Abstract
Purpose
Steel-reinforced concrete-filled steel tubular (SRCFST) columns have been increasingly popular in engineering practice for the columns' excellent seismic and fire performance. Significant design progress guidance has been made through continuous numerical and experimental research in recent years. This paper tested and analysed the residual loading capacity of SRCFST columns under axial loading after experiencing non-uniform ISO-834 standard fire.
Design/methodology/approach
The experimental research covered the main parameter of heating conditions, 1-side and 2-side fire, through two specimens. Two specimens were heated and loaded simultaneously in the furnace for 240 min. After cooling, the columns were moved to the hydraulic loading system and loaded to failure to determine the columns' residual capacity.
Findings
The experimental results indicated that the non-uniform heating area plays an essential role in the overall performance of SRCFST columns, the increasing heating area of columns results in lower residual loading capacity and stiffness. The SRCFST columns still had a high loading capacity after heating and loading in the fire.
Originality/value
The comparison of experimental data against design results showed that the design method generated a 16% safety margin for S2H4 and a 39% safety margin for S1H4.
