Abstract

Purpose

Cracking, deformation and rutting are the most prevalent types of pavement distress, and these deformations and flow characteristics greatly distress the pavement features while also limiting its use. In India, on the other hand, more than 300 million scrap tyres are generated each year, and their disposal has become a severe environmental issue. Furthermore, the scrap generated by the used tyre must be disposed of properly. Hence, this study presents the experimental investigations of bitumen incorporating with Crumb rubber as main additive along with SBS polymer, to enhance the engineering property.

Design/methodology/approach

Crumb rubber (CR) was used as an additive along with styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) polymer to enrich the engineering qualities of the bitumen to reduce the disposal problem of scrap tyres and reduce the risk of environmental pollution. Because SBS polymer is expensive, response surface methodology modelling's central composite design (CCD) was used to optimise the number of tests. CCD modelling's input factors (process variables) were the inclusion rates of SBS and CR, which ranged from 2% to 5% and 4% to 10%, respectively, by total weight. Furthermore, the influence of SBS polymer and CR on the characteristics of modified bitumen was prioritised.

Findings

The addition of SBS and CR enhanced the bitumen's penetration resistance at service temperatures. Furthermore, increasing the SBS and CR concentration affected the flow characteristics of the modified bitumen and enhanced its viscosity. The addition of SBS and CR as bitumen modifiers increased penetration resistance by 24.06%. The Dynamic Shear Rheometer test demonstrated that the complex modulus of virgin bitumen increases with increasing SBS and CR content, which is consistent with the shifting softening point trend. The dosing rate of up to 3.5% SBS and 11% CR considerably contributed to the creation of polymer link networks, which increased the complex modulus of the bitumen by 16.5%. The CCD model's analysis of variance and Pareto bar chart demonstrated that the dose of CR is significant in improving the engineering features of the virgin bitumen rather than the SBS.

Originality/value

The utilisation of CR as a bitumen modifier may solve the problem of waste tyre disposal while also lowering the risk of environmental damage. Furthermore, because the presence of CR increased the engineering properties, particularly the complex modulus of virgin bitumen, the use of CR in combination with SBS polymer can be an efficient and cost-effective strategy to improving bitumen qualities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of process parameters of fused deposition modelling (FDM) 3D printing process on viscoelastic responses (creep compliance and recoverable compliance) of FDM built parts using a novel experimental design technique.

Design/methodology/approach

As part of the process characterization, a recently developed class of three-level design methodology – definitive screening design (DSD) – was used in this study to fit a second-order polynomial regression model. Artificial neural network (ANN) was also used to determine the optimal process parameters to improve creep compliance and recoverable compliance. The relationship between layer thickness, air gap, raster angle, build orientation, road width, number of contours and creep performance of FDM fabricated part was thereafter established empirically. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to examine and characterize the morphology of the structures for some samples.

Findings

This study found that the creep resistance of FDM-manufactured part is significantly influenced by layer thickness, air gap, raster angle and number of contours and it can be improved by optimizing the settings of the selected parameters. The relationship between FDM process parameters and creep properties was determined, with the best creep performance observed by using 0.127 mm of layer thickness, zero air gap, zero raster angle, build orientation of 17.188°, road width of 0.4572 mm and 10 contours. Finally, the result is verified by confirmation experiments. The results prove that a DSD is a very effective design in characterizing the influence of process parameters on creep properties of FDM-built part at the lowest cost.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper lies in characterizing and optimizing the effect of process parameters on creep performance of FDM manufactured part that has not been studied in all previous studies. The paper highlights, for the first time, how the application of DSD can overcome most of the limitations encountered in the conventional techniques. This study can be used as a guide to the different additive manufacturing users of various industries and the results provide a good technical database on how FDM process parameters influence the creep performance of manufactured parts.

Abstract

Purpose

Microstereolithography is capable of producing millimeter-scale polymer parts having micron-scale features. Material properties of the cured polymers can vary depending on build parameters such as exposure. Current techniques for determining the material properties of these polymers are limited to static measurements via micro/nanoindentation, leaving the dynamic response undetermined. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a method to measure the dynamic response of additively manufactured parts to infer the dynamic modulus of the material in the ultrasonic range.

Design/methodology/approach

Frequency-dependent material parameters, such as the complex Young’s modulus, have been determined for other relaxing materials by measuring the wave speed and attenuation of an ultrasonic pulse traveling through the materials. This work uses laser Doppler velocimetry to measure propagating ultrasonic waves in a solid cylindrical waveguide produced using microstereolithography to determine the frequency-dependent material parameters of the polymer. Because the ultrasonic wavelength is comparable with the part size, a model that accounts for both geometric and viscoelastic dispersive effects is used to determine the material properties using experimental data.

Findings

The dynamic modulus in the ultrasonic range of 0.4-1.3 MHz was determined for a microstereolithography part. Results were corroborated by using the same experimental method for an acrylic part with known properties and by evaluating the natural frequency and storage modulus of the same microstereolithography part with a shaker table experiment.

Originality/value

The paper demonstrates a method for determining the dynamic modulus of additively manufactured parts, including relatively small parts fabricated with microstereolithography.

Abstract

Purpose

In order to evaluate the rheological properties of asphalt more comprehensively and effectively, and to explore and discuss the practicability of relevant models in the evaluation of the rheological properties of asphalt.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the rheological and viscoelastic theories, temperature scanning, frequency scanning and multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) tests of different modified asphalt were carried out by dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) to obtain relevant viscoelastic parameters and evaluate the high temperature properties of different modified asphalt. Based on the time-temperature equivalence principle, the main curve was constructed to study the viscoelastic properties of asphalt in a wider frequency domain. The main curve was fitted with the CAM model, and the rheological properties of different modified asphalt were evaluated through the analysis of model parameters. The creep stiffness and creep velocity of different modified asphalt were obtained through the rheological test of bending beam (BBR), and the low-temperature performance of different modified asphalt was analyzed by using Burgers model to fit the creep compliance.

Findings

The results show that the high temperature rheological properties of several modified asphalt studied in the test are ranked from best to worst as follows: PE modified asphalt > SBS modified asphalt > SBR modified asphalt. Short-term aging can improve the high temperature performance of asphalt, and different types of modifiers can promote or inhibit this improvement effect. Based on BBR test and Burgers model fitting analysis, SBR modified asphalt has the best low temperature performance, followed by SBS modified asphalt, while PE modified asphalt has poor low temperature performance, so it is not suitable to be used as road material in low temperature area.

Originality/value

Combined with effective evaluation methods, the rheological properties of asphalt at different temperatures and angles were systematically evaluated, and the evolution of rheological properties of asphalt characterized by model parameters was further analyzed by advanced model simulation.

Abstract

Purpose

The anisotropic surfaces of viscoelastic materials play a role in sliding friction; the purpose of this paper is to study the effect of the anisotropic surfaces on contact area and the friction coefficient.

Design/methodology/approach

A complex elastic modulus and an anisotropic power spectrum are used to compute the coefficient of friction based on the extension Persson theory which considers the partial contact and the variation in the roughness slopes.

Findings

The ratios of the relative contact area that varies with velocity are obtained with different angles and eccentricities, and the effect of the elastic modulus needs to be considered. The coefficients of the friction parallel to the direction of motion decrease as the angle increases, or as the eccentricity decreases. The friction coefficients in the vertical direction change irregularly when the angles or eccentricities increase.

Originality/value

An extension of Persson’s work considering the partial contact and the effective mean square slope of the roughness is applied to study sliding friction, and the effect of the elastic modulus on contact area is considered.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find a new method to reinforce high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with polyacrylonitrile fibers (PAN). Furthermore, the crystallinity, viscoelasticity and thermal properties of HDPE composites have also been investigated and compared.

Design/methodology/approach

For effective reinforcing, samples with different content fillers were prepared. HDPE composites were prepared by melt blending with double-screw extruder prior to cutting into particles and the samples for testing were made using an injection molding machine.

Findings

With the addition of 9 Wt.% PAN fibers, it was found that the tensile strength and flexural modulus got the maximum value in all HDPE composites and increased by 1.2 times than pure HDPE. The shore hardness, storage modulus and vicat softening point of the composites improved continuously with the increase in the proportion of the fibers. The thermal stability and processability of composites did not change rapidly with the addition of PAN fibers. The degree of crystallinity increased with the addition of PAN fibers. In general, the composites achieve the best comprehensive mechanical properties with the fiber content of 9 Wt.%.

Practical implications

The fibers improve the strength of the polyethylene and enhance its ability to resist deformation.

Originality/value

The modified HDPE by PAN fibers in this study have high tensile strength and resistance to deformation and can be used as an efficient material in engineering, packaging and automotive applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the solution of the buckling and resonance stability problems in inelastic beams and wooden plane trusses, taking into account geometric and material defects.

Design/methodology/approach

Two sources of non-linearity are analyzed, namely the geometrical non-linearity due to geometrical imperfections and material non-linearity due to material defects. The load-bearing capacity is obtained by the rheological-dynamical analogy (RDA). The RDA inelastic theory is used in conjunction with the damage mechanics to analyze the softening behavior with the scalar damage variable for stiffness reduction. Based on the assumed damages in the wooden truss, the corresponding external masses are calculated in order to obtain the corresponding fundamental frequencies, which are compared with the measured ones.

Findings

RDA theory uses rheology and dynamics to determine the structures' response, those results in the post-buckling branch can then be compared by fracture mechanics. The RDA method uses the measured P and S wave velocities, as well as fundamental frequencies to find material properties at the limit point. The verification examples confirmed that the RDA theory is more suitable than other non-linear theories, as those proved to be overly complex in terms of their application to the real structures with geometrical and material defects.

Originality/value

The paper presents a novel method of solving the buckling and resonance stability problems in inelastic beams and wooden plane trusses with initial defects. The method is efficient as it provides explanations highlighting that an inelastic beam made of ductile material can break in any stage from brittle to extremely ductile, depending on the value of initial imperfections. The characterization of the internal friction and structural damping via the damping ratio is original and effective.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the solution of the fatigue damage problem of reinforced concrete frames in bending.

Design/methodology/approach

The problem of fatigue damage is formulated based on the rheological–dynamical analogy, including a scalar damage variable to address the reduction of stiffness in strain softening. The modal analysis is used by the finite element method for the determination of modal parameters and resonance stability of the selected frame cross-section. The objectivity of the presented method is verified by numerical examples, predicting the ductility in bending of the frame whose basic mechanical properties were obtained by non-destructive testing systems.

Findings

The modal analysis in the frame of the finite element method is suitable for the determination of modal parameters and resonance stability of the selected frame cross-section. It is recommended that the modulus of elasticity be determined by non-destructive methods, e.g. from the acoustic response.

Originality/value

The paper presents a novel method of solving the ductility in bending taking into account both the creep coefficient and the aging coefficient. The rheological-dynamical analogy (RDA) method uses the resonant method to find material properties. The characterization of the structural damping via the damping ratio is original and effective.

Abstract

Purpose

To extend the reuse method and rate of straw biomass, this paper investigated the effect of lignin synthetic phenolic resin (LPF) on the rheological properties of asphalt binder.

Design/methodology/approach

Four LPFs with 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% substitution rates were prepared by replacing phenol with lignin in synthetic resins and using it as a modifier to prepare a bio-asphalt binder. Temperature sweep tests were conducted to evaluate aging resistance and temperature sensitivity of the bio-asphalt binder. The rutting resistance of the bio-asphalt binder was evaluated by frequency sweeps and multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) test. Linear amplitude sweep (LAS) tests were conducted to evaluate the fatigue resistance of the bio-asphalt binder. A master curve was constructed to further analyze the rheological properties of the bio-asphalt binder at different frequencies. The low-temperature cracking resistance of the binder was evaluated by G-R parameters, critical temperatures and ΔTc. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was performed to investigate the changes in the functional groups of the binder before and after aging.

Findings

The results indicated that adding LPF could improve the high-temperature rutting resistance, fatigue resistance, aging resistance of asphalt and the binders are less affected by temperature. Additionally, LPF slightly prohibited the low-temperature performance of the asphalt binder, which, however, was significantly lower than the base asphalt degradation during aging. Compared with base asphalt binders, the bio-asphalt binder showed no new absorption peaks generated after adding LPF, identifying that the improved asphalt binder performance by LPF was a mainly physical modification.

Originality/value

The main objective of this paper is to further improve the substitution rate (i.e. the mass substitution ratio of lignin to phenol) of lignin and broaden the application of biomass resins, thus realizing resource sustainability.

Abstract

Purpose

The problems of inelastic instability (buckling) and dynamic instability (resonance) have been the subject of extensive investigation and have received wide attention from the structural mechanics community. This paper aims to tackle these problems in thin-walled structures, taking into account geometrical and/or material non-linearity.

Design/methodology/approach

The inelastic buckling mode interactions and resonance instabilities of prismatic thin-walled columns are analysed by implementing the semi-analytical finite strip method (FSM). A scalar damage parameter is implemented in conjunction with a material modelling named rheological-dynamical analogy to address stiffness reduction induced by the fatigue damage.

Findings

Inelastic buckling stresses lag behind the elastic buckling stresses across all modes, which is a consequence of the viscoelastic behaviour of materials. Because of the lag, the same column length does not always correspond to the same mode at the elastic and inelastic critical stress.

Originality/value

This paper presents the influence of mode interactions on the effective stresses and resonance instabilities in thin-walled columns due to the fatigue damage. These mode interactions have a great influence on damage variables because of the fatigue and effective stresses around mode transitions. In its usual semi-analytical form, the FSM cannot be used to solve the mode interaction problem explained in this paper, because this technique ignores the important influence of interaction of the buckling modes when applied only for undamaged state of structure
