Abstract

Purpose

Despite corporate communications having an immense impact on corporate success, there is a lack of dedicated techniques for their management and visualization. A potential strategy is to apply business process management (BPM) approach with business process model and notation (BPMN) modeling techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

The goal of this study was to gain empirical insights into the cognitive effectiveness of BPMN-based corporate communications modeling. To this end, experimental research was performed in which subjects tested two modeling notations – standardized BPMN conversation diagrams and a BPMN extension with corporate communications-specific concepts.

Findings

Standard conversation diagrams were demonstrated to be more time-efficient for designing and interpreting diagrams. However, the subjects made significantly fewer mistakes when interpreting the diagrams modeled in the BPMN extension. Subjects also evolved positive perceptions toward the proposed extension.

Practical implications

BPMN-based corporate communications modeling may be applied to organizations to depict how formal communications are or should be performed consistently, effectively and transparently by following and integrating with BPM approaches and modeling techniques.

Originality/value

The paper provides empirical insights into the cognitive effectiveness of corporate communications modeling based on BPMN and positions the corresponding models into typical process architecture.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explain one of the most important collective communication patterns used in scientific applications which is the complete exchange, also called All‐to‐All. Although efficient algorithms have been studied for specific networks, general solutions like those available in well‐known MPI distributions (e.g. the MPI_Alltoall operation) are strongly influenced by the congestion of network resources.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper we present an integrated approach to model the performance of the All‐to‐All collective operation, which consists in identifying a contention signature that characterizes a given network environment, using it to augment a contention‐free communication model.

Findings

This approach, assessed by experimental results, allows an accurate prediction of the performance of the All‐to‐All operation over different network architectures with a small overhead.

Practical implications

The paper discusses the problem of network contention in a grid environment, studying some strategies to minimize the impact of contention on the performance of an All‐to‐All operation.

Originality/value

The approach used, assessed by experimental results, allows an accurate prediction of the performance of the All‐to‐All operation over different network architectures with a small overhead. Abstract

As new computer communication systems, such as distributed computer networks or mobile data networks, grow in scale and complexity, the problem of being able to understand and to predict system behaviour becomes increasingly important. To their behaviour analysis we can use both analytical and simulation methods. Principally the application of analytical queuing theory results belongs to the preferred method in comparison to the simulation method. In this sense the article describes the development, realisation and verification of the new analytical model for the study of the basic parameters (end‐to‐end delay, performance etc.) of distributed data networks (computer networks, mobile data networks). The suggested model considers for every node of the data network one part for its own node's activities (communication functions) and another one for the modelling of each node channel for data transmission. When using a multiprocessor system, as the modern node communication processor, the model for its own node activities is the more realistic M/D/r system (Poisson arrival process/Deterministic service time distribution/r server system) and for the every node transmission channel the M/M/1 system (Exponential service time, Single server system). The new developed analytical model includes the influence of the communication functions to the whole delay in each node of a computer communication network. The achieved results of the developed model are compared with the results of the commonly used analytical and simulation models to estimate the magnitude of improvement. Likewise the developed analytical model was tested under various ranges of parameters, which influence the architecture of the distributed data networks and which are important for practical use.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper considers correction aspects of computer communication networks modelling with emphasis on their performance evaluation. In general, the problem is to achieve the highest possible performance given constraints on the system.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper reviews the application of the analytical methods, based on the queueing theory, to the computer communication systems and makes an extension of theory to the improvement of the developed analytical models. In this sense the paper describes the derivation of a correction factor for analytical models to study more precise their basic parameters (end‐to‐end delay, performance, etc.).

Finding

The contribution is in incorporating the derived correction factor to account for the real non‐exponential nature of the input to the transmission channels of computer communication systems. The produced results by corrected analytical model are compared with results previously reported in the literature to estimate the magnitude of improvement.

Practical implications

The improved analytical models were tested under various ranges of parameters, which influence the architecture of the computer communication networks and which are important for practical use.

Research limitations/implications

The rapid rate of growth of computer‐based communication systems (e.g. distributed computer networks, mobile data networks) has resulted in a renewed and intensive interest in this area. Efficient design of their service facilities leads to the sharing of resources among users. Such public shared networks are largely oversubscribed by independent users, which make random demands on the network resources. The optimal resource allocation to satisfy such demands and the proper settlement of contention when demands exceed the capacity of the resources, constitute the problem of being able to understand and to predict system behaviour.

Originality/value

To behaviour analysis we can use both analytical and simulation methods. Modelling and simulation are methods, which are commonly used by performance analysts to represent constraints and optimise performance. Principally the application of analytical queuing theory results belongs to the preferred method in comparison to the simulation method, because of their ability to analyse also very large networks.

Abstract

Purpose

The question of whether and how communication departments contribute to organizational value creation has rarely been addressed in research. Such evidence is crucial, however, as communications compete internally with other functions (e.g. marketing and human resources (HR)) for budgets and staff. This article fills the gap by applying the business model concept, an established approach from management theory and practice, to communication units.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on an interdisciplinary literature review, the authors propose the Communication Business Model (CBM) as a new management approach for communications. To this end, pertinent definitions, frameworks and typologies of business models are analyzed and combined with insights from corporate communications literature.

Findings

The CBM outlines the generic architecture of business models for communication departments. Such models describe the basic principles of how such a unit operates, what services and products it provides, how it creates value for an organization and what revenues and resources are allocated.

Research limitations/implications

The approach stimulates the debate on communication units as objects of observation when researching communication management practices. Further research with appropriate empirical methods is needed to identify and study different types of business models for communications.

Practical implications

The CBM can be used as a management tool to analyze, explain and innovate communication management in organizations. It is a fertile approach for communication practitioners to make the work of their department visible and to position themselves internally and externally.

Originality/value

Transferring a well-known concept from general management to communication management enriches the value creation debate in theory and practice. It allows communication leaders to align their work with organizational goals and make it accessible to top management and other decision-makers in the organization. It also opens up new avenues for research and education.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose and test a model that examines the potential connections between two teacher situational variables (teacher immediacy and credibility) and three learner affective factors (motivation, attitudes and communication confidence) and to examine how such associations predict learners’ L2WTC (Foreign/second language willingness to communicate) in a language class via a comprehensive communication model to structurally verify the theoretically based associations among these variables.

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 214 females and 198 males took part in the study with age range between 19 and 38 years. Participants filled in a verified, translated Arabic version of the questionnaires using an online questionnaire. Data were gathered using questionnaires and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis, path analysis and sequential mediation analysis using bootstrapping methods to identify and verify direct and indirect paths in the model.

Findings

The initial L2 communication structural model showed acceptable goodness of model fit. Teacher credibility and immediacy behaviors only indirectly predicted L2WTC through the mediation of affective variables. Motivation and communication confidence mediated the relationship between credibility and L2WTC, while the association between immediacy and L2WTC was mediated by communication confidence.

Originality/value

The findings of this study have important pedagogical implications globally for professions related to communication instruction, especially with regard to teacher credibility behaviors and particularly for practitioners and beneficiaries in EFL contexts where learners are widely acknowledged for their unwillingness to communicate in foreign language classes.

Abstract

The Internet has brought about change in the way that public relations is practised. Not only has it provided another channel of communication, but the communication dynamic itself has changed because of the Internet’s unique combination of characteristics. Much public relations practice is still posited on dated theories of the system of communication along the linear lines of sender, channel, receiver (with feedback). The public relations professional is there to transmit a message with the purpose of persuading publics to the point of view being promulgated. There have been suggestions that a new model of communication is required in order to explain the Internet medium. This paper re‐examines three of the older communication systems models to establish whether there are elements within them that can be helpful in explaining the dynamics of Internet‐based communication. The authors use the three models, in turn, to examine this medium by focusing on the message sender, the channel itself and the user of the Internet. The conclusion is that together they can throw valuable light on Internet‐based communication and that there are lessons to be drawn from these models that are useful for the contemporary public relations practitioner.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to gain insights from existing models of information behaviour, building on them to develop a new model which, unlike most others, encompasses both information seeking and communication. By identifying key factors affecting the successful communication and use of information, it is hoped that the model will be of practical value both to information providers and to users.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on a literature search and analysis of well‐established models of information seeking and of communication, from which a new conceptual model is constructed.

Findings

Existing models have elements in common, though most models in library and information science focus on information seeking and the information user, while those from the field of communications focus on the communicator and the communication process. A new model is proposed that includes key elements of existing models and takes into account not just the information seeker but also the communicator or information provider.

Originality/value

The model developed in this paper is the first to combine elements from both information seeking and communication models. Being built on previous research, it can be used to investigate the practical value of the model itself and the elements that it has in common with other models.

Abstract

Purpose

The purposes of this research are to understand the complex communication environment of South Africa, to determine to which extent previously identified communication models can be applied to this burgeoning field and to propose a new model of communication: an integrated marketing communications model.

Design/methodology/approach

This research used surveys.

Findings

The results largely found support for the integrated marketing communications model and confirmed the activist, situational and oral communication models found in the previous study.

Research limitations/implications

The results show that the use of these models are stable across job and organization types, which provides support for applying theoretical constructs across different communication disciplines in order to build the field of strategic communication.

Originality/value

The theoretical basis of strategic communication is elusive, and not many studies exist that have tried to offer a cohesive theory of the field. This research is one of the first steps in the process of building a robust and cohesive strategic communication theory and focuses on the development of models of communication with audiences or stakeholders. This is a line of research typically pursued in public relations but not in on other areas of communication practice such as marketing and government relations.
