Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to address the key variables that determine the level of control of color in a typical textile supply chain, including lighting variability, color perception, and color measurement.

Design/methodology/approach

A fishbone diagram is used to demonstrate the wide range of variables that affect the control and communication of color within the textile supply chain.

Findings

It is important to identify the important parameters and variables that influence the control of color within various stages of the textile supply chain. In regard to visual assessment variability, the results obtained in an ongoing study at North Carolina State University based on the psychophysical testing of 50 observers demonstrate a statistical difference for visual judgments of small color differences between naïve and expert observers. Results of a paired t‐test between the second and the third trial conducted by naïve observers indicate that the repetition of the visual observations significantly affects the assessment of small color differences.

Research limitations/implications

Assessment of lighting measurements of several stores in the USA demonstrate variability in lighting, with many stores having at least two different light sources. This variability, in combination with uncontrolled lighting from external windows and entrance/exit areas, can lead to significant variability in the color perception of textile garments displayed in such areas, and may lead to consumer experience being significantly different from that intended by the designer.

Practical implications

The optimization of variables that influence the assessment and communication of color is vital to achieving effective communication between all parties involved. This can significantly reduce costs and lead times resulting in improved competitiveness and cost efficiency associated with increased consumer satisfaction and confidence in the industry.

Originality/value

The repetition of visual observations significantly affects the assessment of small color differences.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to determine the most practically applicable color-difference formula for yarn-dyed fabrics woven from warp and weft yarns in different color depths and to establish color-difference tolerance for perceptibility by evaluating yarn-dyed fabrics visually and instrumentally.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 108 sample pairs were evaluated by a panel of 13 observers with perceptibility method under three typical light sources (A, D65 and cool white fluorescent). The data sets were statistically analyzed by the homogeneity of variance test (F-test), analysis of variance, standardized residual sum of squares and performance factor/3.

Findings

Light sources had a slight influence on the visual assessments of yarn-dyed fabrics. Among the eight color-difference formulae for measurements of yarn-dyed fabrics, CIEDE2000(2:1:1) outperformed all other tested formulae, and the color tolerance for the perceptibility of CIEDE2000(2:1:1) was 0.62. When the homochromy index (K) of warp and weft yarns of yarn-dyed fabric was lower than 1.25, the color difference based on ΔE*00(2:1:1) between the two samples was acceptable in terms of the color tolerance for perceptibility (i.e. 0.62).

Practical implications

The warp and weft yarns in different color depths could be woven in fabric with a relatively uniform color appearance.

Originality/value

This study could contribute to cost savings by reusing disqualified dyed yarns during the weaving manufacturing process.

The rapid growth of the powder coatings industry over the past ten years has brought with it dramatic changes in the technology of the manufacturing process and in the products themselves. Powder coatings have become recognised as a high performance and cost‐effective alternative to conventional wet paint systems. The increasing numbers of discerning end users who have adopted powder as a finishing process have demanded demonstrable improvements in product quality and performance over their existing finishing systems. This has lent additional impetus to the drive for better products and has accelerated the pace of technological change within the industry. Pressure on powder manufacturers has resulted in increasingly tighter requirements for consistency of product quality and none more so than in control of the colour of the powder coating, especially for demanding applications such as architectural and domestic appliance coatings.

Colour assessments must obviously be made under carefully controlled conditions of illumination and viewing if there is to be agreement between all those concerned in the various stages of the reproduction process. The British Standards Institution therefore implemented BS 950 ‘Artificial daylight for the assessment of colour’. The latest report issued on the work of the Pira/ UK Colour Printing Council is designed to assist in the installation of lighting, particularly where colour assessments are necessary. It explains the importance of good lighting design and how to implement the British Standard. The report is entitled ‘Guidelines on the selection of lighting for colour assessment in graphic reproduction’.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to focus on the possibility of developing new thiazole azo dyes with good colouristic application properties, biological and pharmacological activities.

Design/methodology/approach

Coupling of curcumin with different aromatic diazonium salts of 2-amino thiazole derivatives, such as 2-aminobenzothiazole, 2-amino-5-phenylthiazole, 2-amino-5-methylthiazole and 2-amino-5-nitrothiazole-produced novel azo dyes. Structures of all synthesised dyes were fully confirmed via spectroscopic and analytical methods. Those compounds were examined for their antimicrobial, anticancer and antioxidant activities. They were applied on polyester fabrics and, subsequently, their dyeing properties, light, washing, perspiration, rubbing and sublimation fastness were determined.

Findings

Prepared dyestuffs were suitable for dyeing polyester fabrics. It was found that all prepared dyes possess high colour strength, as well as good overall fastness properties. Meanwhile, the synthesised compounds exhibited good biological and pharmacology activity.

Research limitations/implications

Synthesis of these four azo dyes for textile dyeing was not conveyed earlier.

Practical implications

Thaizolyl disperse dyes were responsible for giving better colour assessment and fastness properties on polyester fabrics.

Social implications

Although, most of synthesis eco-friendly dyes are expensive, they are showing a good antimicrobial and anticancer activity.

Originality/value

It gave straightforward approach to synthesise novel thiazolyl azo dyes with good biological, pharmacology activities, good colour assessment, and fastness properties.

Abstract

This paper covers some of the work undertaken in our Product Applications Laboratories over a period of several years in connection with universal tinter acceptance into alkyd gloss paints. Our work has covered a very wide range in the past ten years and we have developed some guiding principles to improve tinter acceptance. Purists could argue that the term ‘universal tinter’ is a misnomer and I would accept that argument. However, the term has a general acceptance, within the paint industry, to mean a range of strength controlled coloured tinters intended for decorative/architectural paints such as gloss, semi‐gloss, flat systems based on both alkyd and emulsion polymer resins. The tinting of strength controlled base paints with these universal tinters is done at point of sale, to produce commercially acceptable colour matches to a large number of colours offered, say 1,000 or more.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop a novel protocol for the synthesis of disperse dyes derived by a triple cascade reaction with lawsone in presence of Zn acetate as a catalyst. The developed novel scaffolds have efficient dyeing properties on nylon and polyester fibers.

Design/methodology/approach

This report demonstrates an effectual triple cascade protocol for the synthesis of novel disperse dyes derived from various polynuclear carbaldehyde, urea and lawsone. The Zn acetate was found to be an effective catalyst for this reaction. Their dyeing performance has been studied on nylon and polyester fabrics. The wash fastness, sublimation fastness, color assessment, determination of percentage exhaustion and fixation properties were applied to both the dyed fabrics.

Findings

The obtained results indicate that the Zn acetate is an efficient catalyst for the developed triple cascade protocol. The prepared novel disperse dye greatly impacted their dyeing properties on nylon and polyester fibers. They have shown brilliant shades, higher affinity, adsorption capacity, superior tinctorial strength than the lawsone. The percentage exhaustion value, fixation value, color strength (K/s) value, washing and sublimation fastness properties have been found very well in all dyed nylon samples compared to polyester samples. These results discloses that these disperses dyes are very useful to the growing importance of nylon and polyester fibers.

Research limitations/implications

The present protocol synthesizes the racemic mixture of the prepared molecules.

Practical implications

Developed protocol can be used for various other triple cascade processes. Also these molecules can be used for dyeing of other fabrics.

Social implications

With the help of commercialization of prepared molecules, it may provide the better alternative of the current disperse dyes. This may affect the various segments of society.

Originality/value

This report represents a novel protocol for the synthesis of modified novel disperse dyes with an efficient dyeing properties on nylon and polyester fibers.
