Abstract

Purpose

The price of a painting is determined by multiple variables, including color-related variables. Colors are important in an economic analysis. This study aims to analyze the paintings executed by Jean-Michel Basquiat (the famous street artist from the 1980s' New York City) and sold at auction to study the potential effect of color intensity, luminosity and color contrast on the prices of his paintings. The authors also study the case of the op art master, Carlos Cruz-Diez, as a robustness analysis to the main results. The analysis that the authors present may be of interest to academicians and to participants in the art market.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors run a hedonic regression model considering 306 paintings (executed by Basquiat alone), and 41 works painted collaboratively between Basquiat and Warhol and sold at auction (2003–2017). The data and the images corresponding to each painting were hand-collected from the websites of several auction houses and complemented with information obtained from the Artprice and Blouin websites.

Findings

Increases in color intensity, luminosity and color contrast have a positive effect on art prices. The authors also find that color intensity is even more recognized (as reflected by higher prices) for paintings belonging to Basquiat's most appreciated (understood as most expensive) artistic period (1980–1983) and during the second part of the sample period (2011–2017). The authors find similar results for Cruz-Diez. The authors also estimate that Basquiat's artworks made collaboratively with Andy Warhol are worth 55% less than those made only by Basquiat. An investment in Basquiat's paintings generated an average annual compounded return of 16.81% (2003–2017), clearly overperforming the S&P 500.

Research limitations/implications

The main limitation of the hedonic regression method lies in the need to have a significant and varied sample to identify the true effect of each variable on the price of the good. Another limitation is that we are only able to use art prices from auctions, as this is the only comprehensive source of data that is publicly available. These two limitations are common to all studies that use the hedonic pricing model. This paper has implications not only for the art pricing (and more generally, asset pricing) literature, but also for the fields of psychology and marketing.

Originality/value

This is the first paper that highlights the importance of analyzing the price impact of color intensity throughout the artistic periods of a painter, finding that color intensity is even more appreciated (as reflected by higher prices) for paintings belonging to an artist's most recognized period. In the case of color contrast, the authors present a novel way to estimate this variable.

Objetivo

El precio de una pintura está determinado por múltiples variables, incluidas las relacionadas con el color. Los colores son importantes en el análisis económico. En este trabajo, se analizan las obras realizadas por Jean-Michel Basquiat (el famoso artista callejero latino de la escena artística neoyorquina de los años 80) y vendidas en subasta, para estudiar el efecto potential que la intensidad del color, la luminosidad y el contraste de sus pinturas pueden tener sobre sus precios También estudiamos el caso del maestro de op-art, Carlos Cruz-Diez, como análisis de robustez a nuestros principales resultados. El análisis que presentamos puede ser de interés tanto para académicos como para participantes del mercado del arte.

Diseño/Metodología/Enfoque

Realizamos un modelo de regresión hedónica considerando 306 obras (pintadas solo por Basquiat), y 41 obras realizadas de manera colaborativa entre Basquiat y Warhol y vendidas en subasta (2003–2017). Los datos y las imágenes correspondientes a cada obra fueron recolectados a mano de los sitios web de varias casas de subastas y complementados con información de los sitios web de Artprice y Blouin.

Hallazgos

Incrementos en la intensidad, luminosidad y contraste del color (variable para la que proponemos una nueva medida), inciden positivamente en los precios del arte. También encontramos que la intensidad del color es aún más reconocida (como se refleja en los precios más altos en las subastas) para pinturas pertenecientes al período artístico más apreciado de Basquiat (1980–1983), entendido como el más caro, y durante la segunda parte del período muestral (2011–2017). Además, hallamos resultados similares para Cruz-Diez. De igual forma, estimamos que las obras de arte de Basquiat realizadas en colaboración con Andy Warhol valen un 55% menos que las realizadas solo por Basquiat. Una inversión en las pinturas de Basquiat generó un rendimiento compuesto anual promedio del 16,81% (2003–2017), claramente superando el rendimiento total del índice S&P 500.

Limitaciones de la investigación/implicaciones

La principal limitación del método de regresión hedónica radica en la necesidad de contar con una muestra significativa y variada para identificar el verdadero efecto de cada variable sobre el precio del bien en estudio. Otra limitación consiste en que solo es posible utilizar los precios de las obras de arte que son vendidas en subastas, ya que esta es la única fuente completa de datos que está disponible públicamente. Estas dos limitaciones son comunes a todos los estudios que utilizan el modelo de precios hedónicos. El artículo tiene implicaciones no solo para la literatura sobre precios de arte (y, más en general, sobre los precios de los activos), sino también para la literatura sobre psicología y mercadeo, en donde el estudio del impacto de los colores en las emociones y en el atractivo de un producto son de suma importancia.

Originalidad/valor

Este es el primer estudio que destaca la importancia de analizar el impacto en precios de la intensidad del color a lo largo de los períodos artísticos de un pintor, debido a que se determinó que la intensidad de color es aún más apreciada (como se refleja en los precios más altos en las subastas), para las pinturas pertenecientes al período artístico más reconocido de un artista. En el caso del contraste de color, se propuso y utilizó una forma novedosa de estimar esta variable.

Abstract

Describes how 48 subjects participated in experiments to investigate the effect of visual cues in identifying odours. The subjects were first instructed to describe the odour of six fruit solutions, four of which were inappropriately coloured. Second, they were presented with a series of fruit solutions which varied in odour and colour intensity and were asked to rank them in order of odour strength. For the control sets, the odour and colour strengths were compatible; in the experimental sets the odour strength and colour intensity were conflicting. The results of the first experiment indicate that the identification of fruit odours proves significantly more difficult when the colour of the solution is inappropriate (p < 0.05) and in the second experiment more subjects rank the solutions in the correct order when the colour intensity and odour strengths are compatible than when they are conflicting. Visual cues are found to influence odour judgements significantly and, when presented with conflicting stimuli, the visual cues appear to override the olfactory sense and distract the subjects from making the correct assessment.

Abstract

Purpose

Here the authors investigate the effects of a visual color cue (brown color) on saltiness expectations, emotional responses and purchase intention of commercial soy sauce products.

Design/methodology/approach

The study enrolled 100 participates, and three sauce colors (light brown, medium brown and dark brown) were used as treatments in this experimental design research. The data analysis was done by a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach with repeated measures.

Findings

The findings indicated that, for the medium and dark brown sauces, the final model revealed a positive effect of sauce color intensity on saltiness expectation, a positive impact of saltiness expectation on emotion and a positive impact of emotion on purchase intention with statistically indifferent factor loadings. Hence, both the medium and dark brown colors soy sauces were the preferred choices for consumers. However, for the light brown color, the test result was unsatisfactory.

Originality/value

Several empirical studies have identified visual cues as useful for sodium reduction. However, from a marketing perspective, a causal relationship between the color intensity and a customer's purchase intention has not been explored in soy sauce products using an experimental design concept and SEM.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influences of the interactions of taste, colour and labelling on sensory perception, liking and identification of saffroned products.

Design/methodology/approach

The consumer and discrimination tests (N=120, 18, 25, 78, for Experiments 1–4, respectively) were conducted. The analyses of discrimination tests were performed using the Thurstonian model and R-index. The results from consumer studies were analysed using the Kruskal–Wallis test, penalty analysis and correlation matrix.

Findings

The study revealed that saffron can interact with the perception of sour and bitter taste and has no significant effects on the sweetness. The colour and labelling generated expectations for quality and sweetness of the samples. When the disparity between the expectation and actual experience was occurred resulted in contrast/assimilation effects on the hedonic ratings and negatively impacted consumer acceptability of the product.

Practical implications

This study showed that the visual cues can modulate the expectation for particular sensory perceptions and also affect the hedonic experiences. Saffron adulteration can be identified by the consumers and can result in a significant decrease in the acceptability of the products. Hence, the practice of substituting saffron with ingredients with a similar colour in these products can be detrimental for business. Additionally, it was revealed that saffron colour is associated with the expected and actual sweet taste perception. Therefore, it is possible to manipulate yellow colour cues to reduce sweeteners in different food products that contain saffron.

Originality/value

The sensory characteristics and consumer perception of saffron have been rarely studied. This study revealed that flavour perception and quality determination of saffroned foods involves the combinations of different sensory modalities and cognitive (expectancy) inputs.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to develop an accurate, selective, low-cost and user-friendly colorimetric pad to detect formaldehyde at low concentration.

Design/methodology/approach

1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione, a reactive chemical, was selected to develop the colorimetric pad for indoor air formaldehyde measurement. Silica nanoparticle impregnated with the reactive chemical was coated on the cellulose filter surface to increase the reactive site. A certified formaldehyde permeation tube was used to generate six varied concentrations between 0.01 and 0.10 ppm in a test chamber. The color intensity on the pads was measured using an image processing program to produce a formaldehyde concentration reading chart. The colorimetric pad was tested for optimum reaction time, accuracy, precision, stability, selectivity and shelf life.

Findings

The color of the pads changed from white to yellow and the color intensity varied with the concentrations and appeared to be stable after exposure to formaldehyde for 8 hours. At room temperature, the stability of the pad was 7 days, and shelf life was 120 days. The accuracy, precision and bias of the pad were 12.38%, 0.032 and 6.0%, respectively. Carbonyl compounds, benzene and toluene did not interfere with the reading of this developed colorimetric pad.

Originality/value

The developed colorimetric pad meets NIOSH's criteria for an overall accuracy of ±25%, bias = 10%. They were accurate at low concentrations, user-friendly and had low cost compared to an electronic direct reading instrument (cost of chemicals and materials was 21.50 Bath or 0.69 USD per piece) so that favorable for the use of general people for health protection.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this work is to study the patterns of pigment colour formation and to develop metal compositions for obtaining spinels using the precipitation and heat treatment methods.

Design/methodology/approach

Precursor materials were prepared using co-precipitation method. Phase composition of pigments were determined by X-ray diffraction. Colour of pigments was determined spectrophotometry. Modelling of colour formation was performed using simplex method. Planning in the future to carry out full synthesis of pigments of blue, red and yellow colours.

Findings

The paper deals with the results of theoretical and experimental research on the synthesis pigments of blue, red and yellow colours based on Fe-Co-Al-O spinel. The influence of the chromophore cation content and the heat treatment temperature on optical and colour characteristics of pigments were studied.

Originality/value

The resulting composition-property diagrams make it possible to evaluate the effect of chromophore cations and heat treatment on the colour formation for Fe2O3-Al2O3-CoO system. Crystal-phase composition of the pigments is installed and its relationship with the optical colour characteristics. That makes it possible carry out targeted synthesis of pigments blue, red and yellow colours in further. The phase composition of pigments and its relationship with optical and colour properties has been established thus enabling the directed synthesis of blue, red and yellow pigments.

Purpose

Background subtraction is a particularly popular foreground detection method, whose background model can be updated by using input images. However, foreground object cannot be detected accurately if the background model is broken. In order to improve the performance of foreground detection in human-robot interaction (HRI), the purpose of this paper is to propose a new background subtraction method based on image parameters, which helps to improve the robustness of the existing background subtraction method.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed method evaluates the image and foreground results according to the image parameters representing the change features of the image. It ignores the image that is similar to the first image and the previous image in image sequence, filters the image that may break the background model and detects the abnormal background model. The method also helps to rebuild the background model when the model is broken.

Findings

Experimental results of typical interaction scenes validate that the proposed method helps to reduce the broken probability of background model and improve the robustness of background subtraction.

Research limitations/implications

Different threshold values of image parameters may affect the results in different environments. Future researches should focus on the automatic selection of parameters’ threshold values according to the interaction scene.

Practical implications

A useful method for foreground detection in HRI.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a method which employs image parameters to improve the robustness of the background subtraction for foreground detection in HRI.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a generic framework based on the colour and the texture features for colour‐textured image segmentation. The framework can be applied to any real‐world applications for appropriate interpretation.

Design/methodology/approach

The framework derives the contributions of colour and texture in image segmentation. Local binary pattern and an unsupervised k‐means clustering are used to cluster pixels in the chrominance plane. An unsupervised segmentation method is adopted. A quantitative estimation of colour and texture performance in segmentation is presented. The proposed method is tested using different mosaic and natural images and other image database used in computer vision. The framework is applied to three different applications namely, Irish script on screen images, skin cancer images and sediment profile imagery to demonstrate the robustness of the framework.

Findings

The inclusion of colour and texture as distributions of regions provided a good discrimination of the colour and the texture. The results indicate that the incorporation of colour information enhanced the texture analysis techniques and the methodology proved effective and efficient.

Originality/value

The novelty lies in the development of a generic framework using both colour and texture features for image segmentation and the different applications from various fields.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a sensitive and cost effective colorimetric sensor for detection of methyl parathion (MP) using simple circuitry. A simple and sensitive concept of colorimetric sensor instrument represents a rapidly expanding field of sensor techniques to monitor MP neurotoxins is described within certain conditions of producing color in samples. The variation of intensity of color with concentration provides discrimination between different concentrations of MP. The colorimetric instrument displays well‐defined signals towards hydrolyzed samples of MP.

Design/methodology/approach

The principle of light intensity measurement has been applied to measure various concentrations of MP based on Lambert‐Beer theory. This device and its processes are useful for quantitative analysis of MP. The detection limits were found within a range of 0.1‐1.5 ppm.

Findings

The experiments from sophisticated analytical techniques are costly and time‐consuming processes that validate the proposed system.

Practical implications

This paper's original proposition of using quantification of MP with colorimetric sensor instrument obtained promising results.

Originality/value

The colorimetric sensor instrument provides a new method for quantification of MP in unknown samples within detection limits.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aimed to focus on the effect of the processing parameters on the physicochemical properties of oil from roselle seed.

Design/methodology/approach

Fine and coarse samples of the ground roselle seeds were conditioned to the moisture contents of 4.4‐10.4 per cent and 5.14‐11.14 per cent. Oil was expressed at applied pressures of 15‐37.5 MPa with 7.5 MPa interval using hydraulic oil extractor for between 10‐40 min. at increment of 10 min. and at the heating temperatures of 80, 90, 100 and 110°C over a period of 15‐30 min. at an increment of 5 min. All the physicochemical properties were determined using AOAC and AOCS methods [AOAC, 1984; AOCS, 1994].

Findings

The free fatty acid, peroxide values and the colour intensity of the oil were affected by the processing parameters; while saponification value, viscosity, specific gravity, refractive index and the iodine value of the oil were not affected by the expression parameters.

Originality/value

Processing parameters were found to affect the quality attributes of free fatty acid, peroxide values and the colour intensity of the oil.
