Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to discuss the evolution of the collaborative computing technology and highlight major benefits of using this technology in small and medium‐sized firms. The trends in collaborative products and services and some of the collaborative computing products generating the most interest will be examined.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper takes the form of a general review.

Findings

This paper concludes that collaborative computing technology or “groupware” is firmly establishing itself as the way forward for successful and sustainable business operations. Collaborative computing programs are becoming a viable option for most small and mid‐sized businesses. They enable a company to increase efficiency, improve productivity, reduce costs, and improve quality by enabling the group to achieve superior decisions and solutions.

Originality/value

This paper provides practitioners with examinations of some of the collaborative computing products generating the most interest.

Abstract

In a few years, the Internet has gone from being the communication tool of scientists to a primary route of information exchange for everyone, from fashion designers to financial analysts. The Internet and its related services create an interactive working environment for users. Through the Internet, effective collaboration becomes possible whenever, wherever, and with whomever. Recently, there has been a significant growth in collaborative products and services aimed at small and mid‐sized businesses. The aim of this paper is to discuss the evolution of the collaborative computing technology and address the capabilities of this new managing tool. The trends in collaborative products and services and some of the collaborative computing products generating the most interest will be examined.

Abstract

Purpose

As the dynamics of the external environment of the enterprise continue to increase, the support of information systems for organizational agility becomes increasingly important. Collaborative Management System (CMS) is a new type of information system that can cope with the dynamic changes of the organization. Effective knowledge transfer is the core of the system implementation. The purpose of this study is to explore the knowledge transfer barriers faced by CMS in its implementation process.

Design/methodology/approach

Through field interviews with a representative CMS provider, this paper summarizes the barriers of knowledge transfer during CMS implementation into three aspects.

Findings

Based on the innovative measures taken by the company and relevant literature, the corresponding mitigating strategies are proposed.

Originality/value

The findings enrich the implementation methodology of agile information systems by exploring the knowledge transfer problem from a novel context. The study also provides a reference for practical implementation to overcome the dilemma of knowledge transfer.

Abstract

This chapter reviews student engagement and learning over of a six year study period (>500 students) in a technology rich learning environment. The technology rich learning environment in this project consists of tablet PCs for each student (1:1 environment), visually immersive multiple projection screens, and collaborative digital inking software. This chapter reviews the education problem being addressed, and the learning theory used as a lens to focus specific active learning pedagogical techniques to address the educational problem. From this problem-based learning theory grounded approach, the features desired in a technology rich learning environment were developed. The approach is shared in this chapter with specific detailed examples to allow others to implement technology rich learning environments with active learning pedagogical approaches to address specific education problems in their institution. The technology rich learning environment implemented and studied includes multiple hardware/software pieces to create a system level solution versus a single device or single app solution.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is geared towards the capture and analysis of network traffic using an array ofmachine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques to classify network traffic into different classes and predict network traffic parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

The classifier models include k-nearest neighbour (KNN), multilayer perceptron (MLP) and support vector machine (SVM), while the regression models studied are multiple linear regression (MLR) as well as MLP. The analytics were performed on both a local server and a servlet hosted on the international business machines cloud. Moreover, the local server could aggregate data from multiple devices on the network and perform collaborative ML to predict network parameters. With optimised hyperparameters, analytical models were incorporated in the cloud hosted Java servlets that operate on a client–server basis where the back-end communicates with Cloudant databases.

Findings

Regarding classification, it was found that KNN performs significantly better than MLP and SVM with a comparative precision gain of approximately 7%, when classifying both Wi-Fi and long term evolution (LTE) traffic.

Originality/value

Collaborative regression models using traffic collected from two devices were experimented and resulted in an increased average accuracy of 0.50% for all variables, with a multivariate MLP model.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore building information modeling (BIM) implementation and practices in developed economies by developing a benchmarking model that will enhance BIM adoption and implementation in developing countries.

Design/methodology/approach

The research design adopted a qualitative approach which includes the desktop review of the extant literature as well as case study reviews of ten BIM projects using an explanatory case study technique to form the foundation upon which the study proposed the model. The moving basis heuristics technique was adopted to develop the scoring system.

Findings

The BIM benchmarking model and assessment template were developed which consisted of three-level concepts modeled to aid project organizations and project team in developing countries to assess and score the level of improvement and implementation of BIM in a project. A desktop review of BIM projects in developed countries demonstrated the significant improvements and benefits possible through the implementation of the established BIM benchmarking model.

Practical implications

The assessment template in conjunction with the benchmarking model is useful for a comparative evaluation of similar BIM projects and benchmarking purposes. The study also discussed how current findings extends and contradicts previous findings.

Originality/value

The findings have provided policymakers, construction stakeholders and professional bodies in the construction industry in developing countries with valuable insights and counter-intuitive perspective that could facilitate the uptake of BIM in construction projects.

This chapter explores how cloud-based office productivity suite(s) such as Google Workspace have been used to engage students in their learning while also preparing them for the workplace. Using these types of tools can make group-based in-class activities, assignments and projects highly engaging for a diverse student body while also developing skills valued in the workplace. Practical examples are shared regarding how the tools have been used with accounting and business students in courses such as communications and computing, introduction to business, sustainability and leadership. Some examples include how students can use the tools to collaboratively: provide feedback to a post-secondary institution regarding its orientation activities; complete a PESTLE and SWOT analysis of a business; use Google Forms with mobile phones to record observations of the emotional state of individuals and discuss in relation to emotionally intelligent leadership; and create a sustainability report for a post-secondary institution. The examples provided can be adapted as is or modified to engage learners in nearly any discipline at any education level in a face-to-face classroom or via remote delivery.

This case aims to observe modes, levels and specific problems in application of information technologies in informing, information sharing and collaboration as important aspects in ensuring quality in control of the processes that occur at school. Some deficiencies in application of information technology within these processes have been identified and alternatives to solving them have been offered. The discussion concerning the solutions was performed according to the parameters that were singled out as important in the analysis of the problems. A school that is recognized in Zlatibor region and elsewhere in Serbia for its advanced development tendencies was selected for the case study. The proposed solutions are practically applicable in any work collective.

Expected learning outcomes

Modern management strategy in education; the importance of process management in insuring quality of whole management system; the importance of implementation of modern information technologies in school management system.

Abstract

Purpose

Libraries and library professionals face multiple challenges in meeting user needs in the second decade of the new millennium. This is particularly true in academic libraries where students and faculty demand and expect fast, easy, and seamless access to information as well as flexible, comfortable places to work alone as well as collaboratively with colleagues, friends, classmates, and instructors. These same patrons often require the assistance of information specialists to navigate a library’s increasingly large array of online resources. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper provides historical context and reviews recent trends in the area in the area of learning and study spaces in academic libraries. It also cites the successful information commons at the author’s home institution, Loyola University Chicago, examining its first six years of operation and projecting changes in its next half decade.

Findings

The past 15 plus years have seen a major shift in philosophy in the USA and in other parts of the globe in terms of the importance of “library as space” in enhancing the role of the college and university library. As a result, academic institutions, at the urging of librarians, have created spaces known as information commons, learning commons, research commons, etc. in response to user needs for access to technology, group work, social interaction, and knowledge creation.

Originality/value

The information commons in all its forms has not been static, indeed it has matured, adapting over time to changing technologies, patron needs, and pedagogies.
