Abstract

Purpose

Today, the high cost of e-learning systems’ implementation and the difficulty of managing the infrastructures motivate educational institutions toward application of cloud-based e-learning systems. This new system should be aligned with the academics’ aims and pedagogical principles to be beneficial for learners and instructors. Therefore, the vendor selection of learning systems is one of the most important processes to migrate toward cloud-based e-learning. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new framework to facilitate the vendor selection of cloud-based e-learning systems in the cloud market.

Design/methodology/approach

To identify the initial criteria as to the vendor selection of cloud-based e-learning services, a literature review is done. To enrich the initial criteria, a focus group of experts is investigated, and the framework developed; then, a survey analysis is conducted to validate the proposed framework. The extracted criteria and sub-criteria are weighted and prioritized using best-worst method (BWM).

Findings

The results indicate that the main dimensions of vendor selection framework as regards cloud-based e-learning systems are managerial, technological and pedagogical factors. The rank orders and weights of the mentioned aspects and their sub-criteria are calculated using the BWM.

Practical implications

The proposed framework helps managers to get a big picture of requirements as to cloud-based e-learning and more effectively to select appropriate vendors in this initiative. In the vendor selection process, managers must pay attention to technological issues as well as managerial and pedagogical considerations.

Originality/value

Cloud-based e-learning systems are getting increasingly essential to offer training courses more efficiently in educational institutions. Although the intersection between cloud computing and e-learning has increasingly grown in both practical and academic contexts, there are little studies on how educational institutions and organizations could be able to select appropriate cloud-based e-learning systems. This paper explores the ignored but critically important subject of cloud-based e-learning. The main contribution of this paper is to propose a novel and integrated framework containing the important aspects of vendor selection in cloud-based e-learning services. The proposed framework comprises managerial, technological and pedagogical aspects simultaneously as well as sub-criteria denoting each aspect.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to propose an integrated model based on expectation-confirmation model (ECM) and technology acceptance model (TAM) to examine whether environmental, human, organizational and technology factors as the antecedents to physicians’ beliefs can affect their satisfaction and continuance intention of the cloud-based hospital information system (HIS).

Design/methodology/approach

Sample data for this study were collected from physicians at six hospitals in Taiwan. A total of 600 questionnaires were distributed, and 471 (78.5 per cent) usable questionnaires were analyzed using structural equation modeling in this study.

Findings

This study proposes a solid research model that is based on ECM and TAM, four types of factors, environmental factor, human factor, organizational factors and technology factors, as antecedents to physicians’ continuance intention of the cloud-based HIS have been examined. This study’s results strongly support the research model with all hypothesized links being significant, and control variables have no confounding effects on physicians’ continuance intention of the cloud-based HIS.

Originality/value

This study contributes to physicians’ continuance intention toward the cloud-based HIS based on ECM, TAM, technology-organization-environment framework and human-organization-technology fit framework, and reveals deep insights into the evaluation of determinants in the field of physicians’ continuance intention of the cloud-based HIS. Accordingly, it is particularly worth mentioning that IS and non-IS determinants are simultaneously evaluated and taken into consideration in this study’s theoretical development of physicians’ continuance intention of the cloud-based HIS to acquire a more comprehensive and robust analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to propose a research model based on expectation-confirmation model (ECM) to examine whether interactivity and course quality factors (i.e. course content quality, course design quality) as antecedents to student beliefs can influence students' satisfaction and continuance intention of the cloud-based electronic learning (e-learning) system within the educational institution.

Design/methodology/approach

Sample data were collected from students enrolled in a comprehensive university in Taiwan. A total of 600 questionnaires were distributed in the campus, and 515 (85.8%) useable questionnaires were analyzed using structural equation modeling.

Findings

Findings showed that students' perceptions of interactivity, course content quality and course design quality positively significantly contributed to their perceived usefulness, confirmation and satisfaction with the cloud-based e-learning system, which in turn directly or indirectly led to their continuance intention of the system. Thus, the results strongly supported the research model based on ECM via positioning key constructs as the drivers with all hypothesized links being significant.

Originality/value

This study identifies three factors (i.e. interactivity, course content quality, course design quality) as drivers from the learner perspective within the cloud-based e-learning environment, and links these factors to students' satisfaction and continuance intention of the cloud-based e-learning system based on ECM. It is particularly worth mentioning that the three drivers can serve as precursors for recognizing the determinants that are crucial to understand students' satisfaction and continuance intention of the cloud-based e-learning system. Hence, this study may provide new insights in nourishing the cloud-based e-learning continuance literature in the future.

Purpose

This study aims to propose an integrated model based on the DeLone and McLean Information System Success Model (DMISS) to examine whether quality factors (system, service and information) can affect user satisfaction and performance of cloud-based marketing systems.

Design/methodology/approach

Recently, technologies change quickly, innovation becomes a vital base of productivity and sustainable growth of businesses is widely accepted. Cyber-physical system technologies help industries change production and marketing cycles according to customers’ needs in real-time. In addition, processing information through cloud service helps companies meet customer needs. The advantages of cloud technology also make it easier for companies to quickly collect the latest data from various sources, making it more effective in decision-making. This research recommends cloud-based marketing to help companies maximize their revenue by providing useful information and better quality for business development. The data were gathered from China automotive companies’ customers. A total of 220 questionnaires were distributed, and 165 (82.5%) usable questionnaires were analyzed using structural equation modeling.

Findings

This study verified that costumers’ perceived information quality, system quality and service quality positively caused the user satisfaction in the cloud-based marketing system.

Practical implications

This paper presents beneficial advice for improving cloud-based marketing systems. Besides, the topic is relevant to cloud-based marketing systems’ success. A better understanding of the impact of intention to use and user satisfaction on cloud-based marketing systems could significantly enhance companies’ success. This paper’s theoretical and practical contributions are expressed to guide organizations and policymakers in increasing cloud-based marketing systems acceptance.

Originality/value

This study empirically tests the relationship of quality factors and performance outcome of cloud-based marketing system through a model based on DeLone and McLean theory. This study bridges the research gap by identifying the factors that drive the adoption of cloud-based services in marketing and the impact of user satisfaction and intention to use on the cloud-based marketing system performance in the case of china companies.

Abstract

Purpose

Recently, interest and necessity for cloud-based hospital information systems (HISs) have emerged as an appropriate alternative for revitalizing medical information exchange between hospitals, analyzing “big data” medical information and developing the use of new medical technologies. The purpose of this paper is to investigate factors that affect the switching of information systems in existing on-premise environments into cloud-based HISs.

Design/methodology/approach

A research model was developed using the push–pull–mooring model based on migration theory. The research model was analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis using partial least squares structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results of this study showed that low compatibility, perceived value, low cost and inertia influenced the intention to switch to cloud-based HISs; low flexibility and low compatibility influenced dissatisfaction; and low cost, ease of maintenance and ease of managing indicators influenced perceived value.

Originality/value

This study is expected to be used as the basis for developing a research model in subsequent studies to analyze the transition to new innovative technologies. Also, in practice, it is expected to contribute to the activation of cloud computing environments in hospitals.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper, building on previous studies of intellectual capital (IC) and business performance, is an exploratory study of how the use of cloud-based accounting/finance infrastructure affects the business performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey method is used to capture perceptions of how cloud-based accounting/finance infrastructure affects business performance in SMEs. The study assumes that although accounting/finance systems are generally regarded as one element of a firm’s structural capital; the introduction of a cloud-based infrastructure in the accounting/finance area has the potential to positively impact on all three elements of a firm’s IC. Based on the survey data collected, a conceptual model was formulated to test the relationship between cloud-based accounting/finance infrastructure and business performance through the prism of firms’ IC.

Findings

The results indicate that cloud-based accounting/finance infrastructure has a positive and statistically significant impact on human capital and relational capital. On structural capital, although positive, the relationship is not statistically significant. On the relationship between the three components of IC and business performance, all three elements are both positive and statistically significant. Furthermore, the R2 value generated for the ultimate endogenous construct in the hypothesised conceptual model, i.e. “Business Performance” is 71.3 per cent, indicating significant model explanatory power.

Research limitations/implications

The findings suggest further more in-depth research is needed to explore in detail the effects of cloud-based accounting/finance infrastructure on both the IC and subsequent business performance of SMEs.

Originality/value

Studies on the effects of cloud computing on accounting are scarce. This exploratory research suggests that cloud-based accounting/finance infrastructure can potentially improve the business performance of SMEs. While a valuable finding in itself, more research in this area is to be encouraged.

Abstract

Purpose

A fundamental concept of the smart city is to get the right information at the right place to make city-related decisions easier and quicker. The main goal of supply chain management (SCM) systems is to enhance the supply chain process for delivering the identified products to customers correctly in distributed organizations. In addition, new IT infrastructure such as cloud-based systems and internet of things (IoT) have changed many organizations and firms. Hence, this study aims to assess the factors that contribute to the success of SCM systems.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the usage of urban knowledge, urban intelligent transportation systems and IT infrastructure was considered as a key factor for the success of SCM systems. For assessing the features of the model, a comprehensive questionnaire was designed. The survey questionnaires were sent to critical informers who are practical heads associated with SCM and urbanism. Of these, 315 usable responses were received, resulting in a response rate of 82.03%. The data were examined using Smart-PLS version 3.2 and IBM SPSS version 25.

Findings

The obtained results showed the high strength of the proposed model. This study found that the impact of urban ITS (safety, accessibility, information management and flexibility) is important to the success of supply chain management systems. Another important finding is that the cloud-based system (cloud security, resource virtualization, on-demand self-service and scalability) has a very important role in the success of supply chain management systems. The finding showed that the effect of IoT service variable (commercialization, mobility features, infrastructure capabilities and security and privacy) on the success of supply chain management systems is significant and positive. The findings also showed that urban knowledge (usage skills, awareness, experience and knowledge sharing) is viewed as a significant factor in the success of supply chain management systems.

Research limitations/implications

The inductive nature of research methodology has introduced limitations on the generalizability of results. Therefore, it is recommended to examine the validity of this research model in other supply chains.

Practical implications

The statistical results support the crucial role of urban knowledge, urban intelligent transportation systems, IoT services and cloud-based systems. Therefore, aspects relating to these factors must be the focus of attention of any distributed organization in their endeavor to develop supply chain management systems. Implementing cloud based IoT through accurate and timely availability of information, can predict forecasting and planning processes, resources, logistics and support, service management and spare parts and many sub-processes in the supply chain. These technologies allow organizations to invest in manufacturing and operating processes rather than paying for the software section, which will generate more cash flow.

Originality/value

One of the most crucial and fundamental parts of an organization’s management is the supply chain management. The department is responsible for coordinating all units from the initial stages, such as supplying materials to the final stages, such as delivery and after-sales service. Comprehensive and credible information platforms are essential for managing a supply chain. Therefore, it is important to use integrated information systems such as IoT, cloud computing, intelligent transportation systems and more in this part of the organization management. Covering this information in a timely and accurate manner will facilitate the process and make the process more transparent. For this purpose, a model is needed to determine the relationship between technologies and supply chain management, which this study has provided a comprehensive model.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the variables which influence user perceptions of cloud-based small business accounting software.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used the end-user computing satisfaction (EUCS) model developed by Doll and Torkzadeh. Responses to open-ended questions informed these findings.

Findings

The findings from this study suggest that user satisfaction and perceived effectiveness were more strongly influenced by content and accuracy than the variables format, ease of use and timeliness.

Research limitations/implications

There were a small number of participants (122) from a single city in New Zealand evaluating a single software application.

Practical implications

Given the increased availability and range of accounting applications for small business, these findings help explain factors which might influence software selection decisions. This study also provides a platform for researchers to extend this research to other cloud-based accounting software applications in their academic research. These findings may also provide software developers with functionality suggestions to be included in future software development.

Social implications

These findings identify the perceived importance of the factors used to evaluate cloud-base accounting software.

Originality/value

There has been very little research undertaken to identify factors which influence user perceptions of cloud-based accounting software using a structured EUCS framework.

Purpose

Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems have gained wide popularity for their role in manufacturing organizations for creating, managing and distributing product data. These systems are one of various enterprise systems which are required for smooth functioning and meeting the scaling up requirements organization. However, with introduction of cloud technology and other industry 4.0 initiatives, there has been focus on moving the on-premises IT application to the cloud. Such a move needs to be carried out by identifying and evaluating various challenges. This paper aims to discuss the aforementioned objective.

Design/methodology/approach

The challenges identified through literature review have also been confirmed to be present via interview, system observation and documentation review through case study-based validation in an automotive component manufacturing industry.

Findings

The article identifies needs and challenges of cloud PLM systems and presents a generic framework for developing an approach for cloud PLM journey for an organization. The article also provides an approach for resolving the different challenges to realizing the designed system.

Originality/value

The simplified generic framework has been presented for use by industry professionals and researchers for designing cloud PLM systems that would fulfill expectations of different levels of stakeholders.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine how cloud‐based information systems and services can support emerging and future requirements for sustainability governance of facilities.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors present basic elements of cloud‐based sustainability governance platforms, conduct a survey of existing industrial platforms and research works, discuss distinguishable and common characteristics of cloud computing platforms for sustainability governance, and give views on future research.

Findings

Cloud computing emerges as a potential candidate for supporting sustainability governance. However, several techniques must be provided in order to support multiple stakeholders, complex analysis and compliance processes.

Research limitations/implications

The number of industrial platforms and research works in the survey is limited, as is information about industrial platforms. Furthermore, industrial platforms are continuously updated, thus some information might be outdated.

Originality/value

There exists no survey for understanding how cloud computing could be used for sustainability governance. The paper not only helps to understand state‐of‐the‐art in using cloud computing for sustainability governance but also discusses main components, stakeholders and requirements for cloud‐based sustainability governance platforms.
