Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the clocking effect of impellers and the superposition between pump stages caused by clocking effect in a five-stage centrifugal pump. Then the best clocking scheme in terms of vibration is tried to be provided as well.

Design/methodology/approach

All curves of pressure fluctuation in different impeller stages can be divided into two groups for the difference of 1/16 T in time domain. The difference is mostly in vibration frequency and amplitude, little in pump head and efficiency.

Research limitations/implications

This research involves eight different impeller clocking schemes. The results show that the clocking effect has little influence in pump head and efficiency, but the influence in pressure fluctuation is larger.

The paper provides guidance for the design of multistage pump for better vibration performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to characterize the blade–row interaction and investigate the effects of axial spacing and clocking in a two-stage high-pressure axial turbine.

Design/methodology/approach

Flow simulations were performed by means of Ansys-CFX code. First, the effects of blade–row stacking on the expansion performance were investigated by considering the stage interface. Second the axial spacing and the clocking positions between successive blade–rows were varied, the flow field considering the frozen interface was solved, and the flow interaction was assessed.

Findings

The axial spacing seems affecting the turbine isentropic efficiency in both design and off-design operating conditions. Besides, there are differences in aerodynamic loading and isentropic efficiency between the maximum efficiency clocking positions where the wakes of the first-stage vanes impinge around the leading edge of the second-stage vanes, compared to the clocking position of minimum efficiency where the ingested wakes pass halfway of the second-stage vanes.

Research limitations/implications

Research implications include understanding the effects of stacking, axial spacing and clocking in axial turbine stages, improving the expansion properties by determining the adequate spacing and locating the leading edge of vanes and blades in both first and second stages with respect to the maximum efficiency clocking positions.

Practical implications

Practical implications include improving the aerodynamic design of high-pressure axial turbine stages.

Originality/value

The expansion process in a two-stage high-pressure axial turbine and the effects of blade–row spacing and clocking are elucidated thoroughly.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to investigate the clocking effect on a centrifugal pump with inlet guide vanes (IGVs).

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses a computation fluid dynamics (CFD) framework to solve the unsteady flows in a centrifugal pump with inlet guide vanes. The relative position between the stationary vanes and the stationary volute tongue is defined as the clocking position when IGVs inside the suction pipe rotate along the circumferential direction.

Findings

The results show that clocking positions have little effect on the pump head and efficiency, however their influences are obvious for the pressure fluctuation and flow field in the centrifugal pump. The maximum difference of pressure amplitude at dominant frequency reach up to 28% on the monitoring point V8 at different clocking positions under design flow rate. For the large flow rate, the clocking effect on flow field and pressure fluctuation in centrifugal pump is similar to that of design flow rate. However, the clocking effect is nearly negligible at partial flow rate, because there are reverse flows around the tongue tip and obvious vortexes forming and developing in the impeller. Those complex phenomena interacting in the centrifugal pump make the clocking effect less evident.

Originality/value

The numerical investigation reveals the clocking effect on a centrifugal pump with inlet guide vanes, which also valuable for the stable operation and optimal design of centrifugal pumps.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of institutional innovation in managing the future. Peter Drucker has encouraged managers to develop institutional innovations in order to reach organizational objectives. These institutional innovations revolve round the value created by the organization for its customers over time. Considering Drucker's insight from the perspective of institutional theory, this paper aims to describe how innovations in transaction institutions may lead to strategic transactions and provide a fundamental transformation in the way transactions are conducted in the market.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a case study of the development of the American clock industry, it is shown that institutional innovations may provide a leadership position for an organization. By trading direct exchange for an innovative transaction model, management innovation occurred within and well beyond the confines of the American clock market.

Findings

The historical case empirically illustrates and extends Drucker's notion of customer‐centric management and the advantage of innovation. Strategically, management must understand how institutional innovations can be used to create a leadership position in the future. This occurs when management uses innovations in transaction rules, termed transaction “institutions”, to create a contrast between the values exchanged between the customer and the organization and the values exchanged between the customer and competing organizations.

Research limitations/implications

Peter Drucker's work is quite broad and, perhaps to his credit, he was never a traditional academic. As a result, evaluating his work is more difficult than evaluating research in one specific theoretical domain. However, it is clear that institutional thinking influenced Drucker. Analytically, this places him at odds with traditional economic and strategic analysis. Accordingly, this research is also somewhat at odds with traditional economic and strategic analysis.

Practical implications

The implications for management are clear. The entrepreneurial role of each type of organisation in solving problems is critical. Only through entrepreneurship can long‐term solutions to problems be developed. This requires a deep understanding of the costs involved, even on a small scale. When the details of costs are understood, entrepreneurial innovations can be developed in response.

Originality/value

This is the first paper that utilizes an institutional framework for strategy analysis based on Peter Drucker's work. This helps managers manage the future by understanding how to systematically take and share risk.

Abstract

Purpose

A low power flip-flop circuit is designed for energy-efficient devices. Digital sequential circuits are in huge demand because every processor has most of the parts of digital circuit. The sequential circuits consist of a basic data storing element, a latch is used to store single bit data. The flip-flop takes a sufficient portion of the total chip area and overall power consumption as well. This study aims to the low power energy-efficient applications like laptops, mobile phones and palmtops.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes a new type of flip-flop that consists of the only 16 transistors with a single-phase clock. The flip-flop has two blocks, master and slave latch. In this design, the authors have focused on only master latch, which includes a level restoring circuit. It is used to help the master latch in data retention process. The latch circuit has two inverters in back-to-back arrangement. The proposed flip-flop is implemented on 65 nm complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology using Cadence Virtuoso environment and compared with other reported flip-flops.

Findings

The proposed flip-flop architecture outperformed the peak percentage, i.e. 79.25% as compared to transmission gate flip-flop and a minimum of 20.02% compared to 18 T true single phase clocking (TSPC) improvement in terms of power. It also improved C to Q delay and power delay product. In addition, by reducing the number of transistors the total area of the proposed flip-flop is reduced by a minimum of 13.76% with respect to 18TSPC and existing flip-flop. For reliability checking the Monte Carlo simulation is performed for thousand samples and it is compared with the recently reported 18TSPC flip-flop.

Originality/value

This work is tested by using a test circuit with a load capacitor of 0.2 fF. The proposed work uses a new topology to work as master-slave. Power consumption of this technique is very less and it is best suitable for low power applications. This circuit is working properly up to 2 GHz frequency.

Fundamental engineering limits to very high speed electronics switching systems are employed. These limitations are caused by packaging and interconnection constraints, as well as device switching speed. From the device viewpoint, reactive parasitics caused by the packaging/interconnection scenario are discussed. From the systems level perspective, overall delay, delay variance and power consumption are explored. The important problem of clock distribution in high speed synchronous digital systems is discussed. These limitations are then revisited with photonics implementation in mind. Comparisons are made between the electrical and photonic approaches. Some engineering limits to the photonic alternative are laid out.

The Inuit of Arviat, Nunavut, paradoxically use rational time to resist rational time, setting aside temporal zones to protect Western cultural paradigms from impinging on their lives all of the time. Additionally, because temporal norms indicate membership in a group, doing time differently is one of the most effective ways in which to say “I’m not a part of your group!” While resisting rational clock-time, for example by walking off the job each day promptly at 4:59 pm, the Inuit of Arviat nevertheless have a myriad of clocks in their homes. Abstract

This study first replicates, then perturbs, the centipede game as implemented by McKelvey and Palfrey (1992). It is thus both a replication study and an original research study. We use controlled laboratory experiments, with computer interfaces for each treatment, anonymous round-robin matching among the subjects across rounds, multiple (10) rounds within each treatment, and incremental changes between adjacent treatments allowing for an assessment of effects at the margin of different game configurations. We find unraveling to the subgame perfect equilibrium somewhat faster than did McKelvey and Palfrey (1992), when using their exact design. Perturbations to that design show that setting non-taker payoffs to zero induces earlier unraveling, as does the use of higher stakes (as in Murphy, Rapoport, and Parco (2006), and Rapoport, Stein, Parco, and Nicholas (2003), respectively). Other, subsequent perturbations show: that there is at most a subtle effect associated with using a 10-second timer with a default move, relative to untimed active moves; and that clock format versus tree format has a minimal effect in common information, unchanging payoff-parameterization environments. We verify the robustness of some key past findings in real-time games. We also explore in a common information environment, the effect of design features previously used in independent private values settings; here we find new evidence that features which might modulate information acquisition and/or processing in an independent private values setting may not restrict behavior in a common information setting.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effect of three-dimensional (3D) inlet guide vanes (IGVs) on performance of a centrifugal pump.

Design/methodology/approach

A design method for 3D IGVs is proposed based on the controllable velocity moment, which is determined by a fourth-order dimensionless function. Numerical simulation of the centrifugal pump with IGVs is carried out by solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations. The method of frozen rotor is applied to couple the stationary and rotational domain.

Findings

The efficiency of pump with 3D IGVs is higher than that with 2D IGVs for most prewhirl angles, which validate the advancement of 3D IGVs on prewhirl regulation. The effect of prewhirl regulation at small flow rate is more significant than that at large flow rate.

Originality/value

A prediction model of velocity moment based on the Oseen vortex is proposed to describe the flow pattern downstream the IGVs.
