Abstract

Purpose

Construction projects in the real estate sector are important for a nation’s economic growth. However, owing to several constraints and stereotypes, the construction industry is suffering from major capital losses. A review of recent literature revealed that risks occurring in real estate construction projects (RECPs) carried out in developing economies can be divided into four categories, i.e. financial risks, design risks, execution risks and sociopolitical risks. This study aims to identify the critical factors that lead to these risk categories and develop a control structure for RECPs.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative method, i.e. a questionnaire-based survey, was used for this study. Using a random sampling technique the questionnaire was distributed to selected, highly experienced project managers. To determine whether the factors identified as part of the literature review strongly influence the categories, the factor analysis of the observations was performed.

Findings

The observations made in this study lead to the identification of six critical risk causing factors, i.e. lack of efficient planning, execution constraints, external constraints, client-induced constraints, project constraints and partner experience. The observations indicated a lack of knowledge of project management, organizational culture and a claims redressal mechanism in RECPs. Also, this study recommends a blockchain-based control structure to control the occurrence of the risk causing factors identified.

Originality/value

This study recommends a blockchain-based control structure for controlling the risks occurring.

Abstract

Purpose

Small and ignorant investors have had very unpleasant experiences in the stock market. They should be alert and have proper knowledge and understanding of the various problems that can arise in their dealings and how these can be resolved. This paper aims to analyse the investors’ probable solutions to their investment-related problems by using descriptives and factor analysis technique. Only Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) can ensure a free and fair market and take India into league of major global capital markets in the next round of reforms.

Design/methodology/approach

By personally visiting the offices of the stockbrokers, 1,000 questionnaires have been distributed among retail equity investors of Punjab, i.e. Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Mohali. Stockbrokers have been selected using simple random sampling technique because of their large number. In total, 373 questionnaires have been filled up by the respondents, and 45 questionnaires have been found to be incomplete and thus have been excluded from the analysis. Remaining 328 questionnaires have been used for the analysis. The objective of the research is to study the investors’ probable solutions to their investment-related problems. The collected data have been analysed using descriptives and factor analysis technique.

Findings

It has been found that 24.7 per cent retail equity investors have filed complaints while dealing in the securities market; on the other hand, 75.3 per cent retail equity investors have not filed any complaint neither against the company nor against the intermediaries. It has been found that the authorities have taken 12-90 days and even four-five months in providing first reply to their complainants. Moreover, it has been found that in some of the cases, SEBI has written to the concerned companies to resolve the complaints, and some issues have been still pending with SEBI. It has been revealed that SEBI has taken quite long time to resolve the complaints, and equity investors have not been satisfied with the decisions of the SEBI. This study has further highlighted the importance of variables considered by investors as probable solutions to their problems while dealing with securities. The highest mean score has been found for the variable grievance redressal mechanism has been slow, followed by investors have been exploited by the malpractices of companies, merchant bankers and auditors, stronger regulations have been required to strengthen investor protection, investor has yet not educated enough to discriminate between good and not-so-good scrips, etc. These 22 variables measuring the construct of investors’ probable solutions to their problems have been analysed with the help of factor analysis. Six factors have been identified with the help of factor analysis, i.e. stability measures for stock market, investor awareness and education norms, measures to impart knowledge to investors, measures to protect investor rights, audit of companies and investor grievance redressal, and these factors have together explained 68.441 per cent of the variance in data.

Research limitations/implications

Based on the study done by the researcher, the following suggestions are identified for further research. As the present study is at a state level, it could be extended to national level. The impact of retail investment in capital market may be studied in view of rural investors. The study may further be carried out to analyse the impact of reforms on the functioning of stock exchanges. A study on the awareness of women investors about retail investment pattern could be attempted. Implications of internet stock trading in India can be taken up for study. Impact of technological innovation in capital markets can be studied.

Practical implications

This study would be of great use for investors who make decisions regarding investment. This study will help policymakers in formulating strategies and will also help credit rating agencies in rating the investment instruments.

Social implications

This study is of great help for investors and SEBI. This study guides the investors regarding various laws that have been formulated for their protection and guides the SEBI in making strict regulations for the protection of the investors.

Originality/value

Abstract

Purpose

Although accountability has been one of the founding pillars of public services, many countries face situations of lack of accountability of service providers. The purpose of this paper is to propose a framework for accountability in public services by strengthening traditional accountability relationships among citizens, political authority and service provider, with the use of information and communication technology (ICT).

Design/methodology/approach

The research analyses a case of public grievance redressal system in India that is entirely facilitated by ICT. It documents the key processes followed by the system and also examines the performance of the system using quantitative data.

Findings

The research identifies key technical and business characteristics of ICT applications that are intended to improve accountability. The traditional accountability relationship is then placed within an ICT framework to suggest how accountability can be reinforced in public services.

Research limitations/implications

The framework is based on analysis of single case and therefore cannot be claimed to be comprehensive.

Practical implications

The framework provides an analytical tool for e‐Government practitioners to design ICT interventions for accountability.

Originality/value

Many mechanisms of enforcing accountability have been tried out by developing countries in the past but with little sustainable success. This paper proposes a different method of addressing the problem of poor accountability in public services by highlighting the role of ICT.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report a study of targets’ experiences of cyberbullying on online labour markets (OLMs). In addition to highlighting the link between targets’ coping and power and control, the paper compares conventional and digital workplaces.

Design/methodology/approach

The method of critical hermeneutic phenomenology is used in the inquiry, bringing political and applied dimensions into the study. Targets’ lived experiences, developed as case studies, were explored via conversational interviews. Thematic analysis was undertaken ideographically, followed by ideology-critique at a nomothetic level. Adopting the psychological/behavioural lens of coping theory, ideology-critique identified micro-level schemas and macro-level ideologies that perpetuate target disenfranchisement. Critical hermeneutic phenomenology illuminates the mutuality between individual and social processes, opening new doors to address power inequities through emancipation.

Findings

Hermeneutic phenomenology uncovered the core theme of “pursuing holistic and long-term well-being”, capturing targets’ attempts at working through their experiences of bullying without jeopardising their position on the OLM. Ideology-critique went beyond highlighting problem-focussed and emotion-focussed coping strategies that empowered targets to indicate how participants’ mindsets, anchored in ongoing circumstantial discourses and long-standing social cognitions, inhibited them from questioning the status quo and exploring alternative coping strategies like legislation and collectivisation, thereby curbing their agency. The findings were theorised in terms of power and control vis-à-vis the unique attributes of workplace cyberbullying, comparing and contrasting conventional and virtual workplaces.

Research limitations/implications

The inquiry is limited to the Upwork platform. Including other OLMs will enhance theoretical generalisability.

Practical implications

The study feeds into praxis by alerting digital workers in general and targets in particular about their circumstances, setting the stage for mobilisation.

Originality/value

The study makes several pioneering contributions. First, it reports the first empirical inquiry examining bullying in digital workplaces, importantly, also extending knowledge on cyberbullying across conventional versus digital workplaces. Moreover, OLM research on abuse and harassment has not been undertaken so far. Second, methodologically, the inquiry illustrates the combination of hermeneutic phenomenology with ideology-critique, taking the rare steps of joining ontological perspectives conventionally viewed as divergent and of incorporating a largely neglected micro-level focus into ideology-critique. Third, it furthers theoretical insights into power and control in workplace bullying while drawing links with coping.

Learning outcomes

The central lesson to be learned from studying the case is to understand the challenges and constraints posed by contextual conditions in designing contracts in public–private partnerships (PPP) for financing and delivering health care in emerging economies such as India.

Case overview/synopsis

Perverse incentives, along with contextual conditions, led to extensive opportunistic behaviors among involved agencies, limiting the effectiveness of otherwise highly regarded innovative design of the program.

Complexity academic level

India’s “Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana” or National Health Insurance Program, launched in 2007 provided free health insurance coverage to protect millions of low-income families from getting pushed into poverty due to catastrophic health-care expenditure. The program was implemented through a PPP using standardized contracts between multiple stakeholders from the public and private sector – insurance companies, hospitals, intermediaries, the provincial and federal government.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to focus on compliance of workplace sexual harassment-related provisions under Indian companies and securities law, based on an empirical analysis of companies’ sexual harassment-related disclosures contained within their directors’ annual reports (ARs). Specifically, sections devoted to sexual harassment-related disclosures, inbuilt within directors’ ARs for the financial year 2019–2020 for a selected sample of companies listed under the National Stock Exchange, have been analysed.

Design/methodology/approach

To examine the nature of companies’ disclosures to demonstrate their compliance with statutory requirements under the POSH law, aligned with the Companies (Accounts) Rules, 2014 and Securities and Exchange Board of India’s regulations, an empirical-based, descriptive content analysis of ARs of 200 listed companies were used.

Findings

This study primarily finds that the majority of companies from the sample have disclosed to have prepared a corporate-level policy, as required under the POSH law. As also required under the POSH law, companies, reportedly, have constituted an Internal Complaints Committee to adjudicate and dispose of incidents related to sexual misconduct reported at their workplaces. However, companies lack in disclosing qualitative information, with sufficient detail, on many important aspects related to prevention and resolution of reported cases of workplace sexual harassment.

Originality/value

This paper adds to the broader narrative of the lacunae within the disclosure and reporting requirements on enhancing the liabilities of the companies to prevent and address sexual harassment under India’s corporate and securities regulations.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to describe the role of human resource management (HRM) in targets' coping with workplace bullying.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper draws on a study rooted in van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenology, conducted with agents working in international facing call centres in Mumbai and Bangalore, India. Exploring targets' lived experiences, conversational interviews and sententious and selective thematic analyzes were undertaken.

Findings

Targets' experiences were captured by the core theme of “protecting my interests” which subsumes four themes, experiencing confusion, engaging organizational options, moving inwards and exiting the organization. The findings highlight targets' attempts to deal with the experience of bullying, relying on their personal and social resources as well as on organizational options in order to ensure that their emotional well‐being, task‐related performance and long‐term career goals were not hampered by victimization. Participants' endeavours displayed two prominent features: the presence of turning points and the critical role of HRM in influencing multiple facets of the experience.

Research limitations/implications

The study achieves theoretical generalizability but further research is needed to establish statistical generalizability.

Practical implications

The engagement of HRM as a truly unitarist ideology, the development of effective employee redressal mechanisms and the relevance of pluralist approaches and collectivization endeavours emerge as crucial areas for application.

Originality/value

In addition to breaking new ground in empirically uncovering the organization's etiological role in workplace bullying, going beyond the existing work‐environment hypothesis and organization as bully conceptualization, the findings provide a new perspective on targets' exit coping response. To the authors' knowledge, workplace bullying has not been studied in India.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to describe bystander behaviour including bystander decisions, actions and outcomes, in the context of workplace bullying.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper draws on a study rooted in van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenology conducted with agents who witnessed workplace bullying in international‐facing call centres in Mumbai and Bangalore, India. Conversational interviews and sententious and selective thematic analyses were undertaken to explore participants' lived experiences.

Findings

Participants' experiences were captured by the core theme of “helpless helpfulness” which subsumes the major themes of “the primacy of friendship” and “the ascendance of the self”. Friendship prompted participants to completely protect targets and to fully resolve the bullying situation. Yet, participants, whose initial behaviour was in the desired direction, greatly curbed their efforts in response to supervisory reactions and organizational positions. Inclusivist and exclusivist HR strategies adopted by the employer organization constrained participants in their endeavours to support targets.

Research limitations/implications

The study achieves theoretical generalisability but further research is needed to establish statistical generalisability.

Practical implications

Bystander intervention is an important solution to workplace bullying. The study findings help in developing more effective bystander intervention training programmes, apart from advocating the engagement of HRM as a truly unitarist ideology, the development of effective employee redressal mechanisms and the relevance of pluralist approaches and collectivisation endeavours.

Originality/value

Bystander behaviour in the context of workplace bullying has received limited empirical attention. The study breaks new ground in uncovering the contribution of workplace friendship and organizational inclusivist and exclusivist HR strategies to bystander experiences. Further, workplace bullying remains largely unexplored in India.

Abstract

Purpose

Many developing countries, including India, are committed to curbing black money from the economy. Therefore, these countries are focusing on a transparent online transaction facility. M-wallets are one online option facilitated by various companies using a mobile application. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of perceived usefulness, perceived security, perceived ease of use, trust, grievance redressal and satisfaction on young users’ intention to continually use M-wallet in India.

Design/methodology/approach

A research framework based on the expectation–confirmation theory has been formulated and tested empirically using data from M-wallets young users in India using structural equation modeling.

Findings

The analysis reveals that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use significantly affect user satisfaction and intention to continually use M-wallets. The effect of perceived security on user satisfaction is significant, and grievance redressal mediates the effect of perceived security on intention to continually use M-wallets.

Practical implications

The outcome of the research will help M-wallet service providers and policy makers in planning the service and increasing customer’ continuance intention.

Originality/value

The uniqueness of this research is that it adds two important constructs for mobile payment systems (grievance redressal and perceived security) that were missing in the earlier model proposed by Zhou (2013). The addition of the two constructs helped in formulating a better model.
