Abstract

Gives a bibliographical review of the finite element methods (FEMs) applied for the linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analyses of basic structural elements from the theoretical as well as practical points of view. The range of applications of FEMs in this area is wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore aims to give the reader an encyclopaedic view on the subject. The bibliography at the end of the paper contains 2,025 references to papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations dealing with the analysis of beams, columns, rods, bars, cables, discs, blades, shafts, membranes, plates and shells that were published in 1992‐1995.

Abstract

Purpose

This article focuses on the low-velocity impact (LVI) output of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)’ reinforcement circular plates, considering agglomeration size effect and clumping of CNTs’ inner side of the agglomerations.

Design/methodology/approach

A representative volume element (RVE) is used to determine the nanocomposite properties reinforced with agglomerated CNTs with random orientation. First-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is used to obtain the motion equations of LVI analysis. These equations are handled by developing a Ritz method and Lagrangian mechanics. To extract the mass and stiffness matrices, terms with second and higher degrees are ignored.

Findings

Formulation validation is performed by providing various examples, including comparisons with other research and ABAQUS FE code. The effects of agglomeration size, clumping of CNTs’ inner side of the agglomerations, CNT volume fraction and impact location on the responses of impact load, projectile displacement and plate deflection are analytically studied. These achievements illuminate how the influence of agglomeration size is very small on the impact response. Also, the influence of clumping of CNTs’ inner side of the agglomerations is significant, and as it increases, the displacement values and impact time increase, and the impact force decreases.

Originality/value

In this article, to avoid additional calculations, the parameters of the mass matrix and the stiffness coefficients are linearized to obtain the equations of motion of the impact on the circular plate.

Abstract

The finite element method of analysis is used to determine the elastic buckling loads for plates with and without openings. The formulation is based on Mindlin plate theory. The 8‐node serendipity element was employed to model the membrane behaviour of the plate in order to determine the in‐plane stress distribution throughout the plate due to the edge loading. The heterosis plate bending element was used in the formulation of the governing equations of the stability problem. The elastic buckling loads for plates with and without openings and under different edge loading conditions are determined and the results were compared with the analytical and numerical results available. The openings considered are circular and square located at the centre of the plate. Convergence of the solution for the plates considered is also discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to quantify the relationship between the fluid flow and pressure drop for perforated plates. The homogenization of non-uniform fluid flows is often accomplished by passing the fluid through perforated plates. The underlying principle for the accomplishment of flow homogenization is a tradeoff of pressure drop for flow uniformity.

Design/methodology/approach

The investigation, implemented by numerical simulation, is based on turbulent flow in pipes and across perforated plates. The approach is as follows: (a) to devise a model to determine pressure drop’s fluid flow information from a single-aperture, (b) to obtain this information for apertures of different shapes, (c) to determine this type of information for perforated plates situated in a circular pipe, (d) to compare the entire perforated-plate pressure drop with that for a single-aperture modular and (e) to analyze two identical perforated plates in series.

Findings

The pressure drop results for the single-aperture modular model agreed very well with those for a whole perforated plate in a round pipe, therefore negating the need to simulate the more complex situation. In addition to the parametric study with aperture shape and Reynolds number, porosities (20-60 per cent) and plate thicknesses were also varied. The results obtained here compared favorably with experimental data.

Originality/value

This work demonstrates an efficient method for analyzing and obtaining useful pressure drop information for perforated plates. For the first time, the porous media approach for modeling perforated plates is compared directly to complete, full-scale perforated plate applications and identical plates in series.

Abstract

Purpose

The main objective of this study is to develop a numerical model based on Isogeometric Analysis to study the dynamic behavior of multi-directional functionally graded plates with variable thickness.

Design/methodology/approach

A numerical study was conducted on the dynamic behavior of multi-directional functionally graded plates. Rectangular and circular plates with variable thickness are taken into investigation. The third-order shear deformation plate theory of Reddy is used to describe the displacement field, while the equation of motion is developed based on the Hamilton's principle. Isogeometric Analysis approach is employed as a discretization tool to develop the system equation, where NURBS basis functions are used. The famous Newmark method is used to solve time-dependent problems.

Findings

The results obtained from this study indicated that the thickness gradation has a more considerable effect than in-plane variation of materials in MFGM plates. Additionally, the influence of the damping factor is observed to affect the vibration amplitude of the plate. The results obtained from this study could be used for future investigations, where the viscous elasticity and other dynamic factors are considered.

Originality/value

Although there have been a number of studies in the literature devoted to analyzing the linear static bending and free vibration of FGM and MFGM plates with variable thickness, the study on dynamic response of FGM and MFGM plate is still limited. Therefore, this study is dedicated to the investigation of the dynamic behavior of multi-directional functionally graded plates.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a computational time dependent modeling to investigate propagation of elastic-viscoplastic zones in the shock wave loaded circular plates.

Design/methodology/approach

Constitutive equations are implemented incrementally by the Von-Kármán finite deflection system which is coupled with a mixed strain hardening rule and physical-base viscoplastic models. Time integrations of the equations are done by the return mapping technique through the cutting-plane algorithm. An integrated solution is established by pseudo-spectral collocation methodology. The Chebyshev basis functions are utilized to evaluate the coefficients of displacement fields. Temporal terms are discretized by the Houbolt marching method. Spatial linearizations are accomplished by the quadratic extrapolation technique.

Findings

Results of the center point deflections, effective plastic strain and stress (dynamic flow stress) and temperature rise are compared for three features of the Von-Kármán system. Identifying time history of resultant stresses, propagations of the viscoplastic plastic zones are illustrated for two circumstances; with considering strain rate and hardening effects, and without them. Some of modeling and computation aspects are discussed, carefully. When the results are compared with experimental data of shock wave loadings and finite element simulations, good agreements between them are observed.

Originality/value

This computational approach makes coupling the structural equations with the physical descriptions of the high rate deformation through step-by-step spectral solution of the constitutive equations.

Abstract

Purpose

The prediction of accurate failure strength and a composite laminate failure load is of paramount importance for reliable design. The progressive failure analysis helps to predict the ultimate failure strength of the laminate, which is more than the first ply failure (FPF) strength. The presence of a hole in the laminate plate results in stress concentration, which affects the failure strength. The purpose of the current work is to analyze the stress variation and progressive failure of a symmetric laminated plate containing elliptical cutouts under in-plane tensile loading. The effect of various parameters on FPF and last ply failure (LPF) strength is studied.

Design/methodology/approach

The ply-by-ply stresses around elliptical cutouts are obtained analytically using Muskhelishvili's complex variable formulation. To predict the progressive failure, Tsai–Hill (T-H) and Tsai–Wu (T-W) failure criteria are used, and depending on the mode of failure, lamina modulus is degraded.

Findings

The study has revealed that fiber orientation and stacking sequence for given loading have the most significant effect on the laminate's failure strength.

Originality/value

Complex variable method and conformal mapping are simple and proficient for studying failure analysis of a laminated plate with elliptical cutout.

The purpose of this paper is to detect the degenerate scale of a 2D bending plate analytically and numerically.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to detect the degenerate scale of a 2D bending plate analytically and numerically.

Design/methodology/approach

To avoid the time-consuming scheme, the influence matrix of the boundary element method (BEM) is reformulated to an eigenproblem of the 4 by 4 matrix by using the scaling transform instead of the direct-searching scheme to find degenerate scales. Analytical degenerate scales are derived from the boundary integral equation (BIE) by using the degenerate kernel only for the circular case. Numerical results of the direct-searching scheme and the eigen system for the arbitrary shape are also considered.

Findings

Results using three methods, namely, analytical derivation, the direct-searching scheme and the 4 by 4 eigen system, are also given for the circular case and arbitrary shapes. Finally, addition of a constant for the kernel function makes original eigenvalues (2 real roots and 2 complex roots) of the 4 by 4 matrix to be all real. This indicates that a degenerate scale depends on the kernel function.

Originality/value

The analytical derivation for the degenerate scale of a 2D bending plate in the BIE is first studied by using the degenerate kernel. Through the reformed eigenproblem of a 4 by 4 matrix, the numerical solution for the plate of an arbitrary shape can be used in the plate analysis using the BEM.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an efficient and accurate numerical model that employs isogeometric analysis (IGA) for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of functionally graded plates (FGPs). This model is utilized to investigate the effects of boundary conditions, gradient index, and geometric shape on the nonlinear responses of FGPs.

Design/methodology/approach

A geometrically nonlinear analysis of thin and moderately thick functionally graded ceramic-metal plates based on IGA in conjunction with first-order shear deformation theory and von Kármán strains is presented. The displacement fields and geometric description are approximated with nonuniform rational B-splines (NURBS) basis functions. The Newton-Raphson iterative scheme is employed to solve the nonlinear equation system. Material properties are assumed to vary along the thickness direction with a power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents.

Findings

The present model for analysis of the geometrically nonlinear behavior of thin and moderately thick FGPs exhibited high accuracy. The shear locking phenomenon is avoided without extra numerical efforts when cubic or high-order NURBS basis functions are utilized.

Originality/value

This paper shows that IGA is particularly well suited for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of plates because of its exact geometrical modelling and high-order continuity.

Abstract

Efforts have been directed to study the magnetic fluid based squeeze film behaviour between rotating porous circular plates with a concentric pocket. The porous housing is considered to be elastically negligibly deformable with its contact surface rough. The stochastic film thickness characterizing the roughness is assumed to be asymmetric with non‐zero mean and variance. Expressions for pressure distribution, load carrying capacity and response time are obtained in closed form. These expressions are numerically computed and the results are presented graphically as well as in tabular form.
