CIBA‐Geigy recently celebrated its 50th anniversary of operations at Duxford, near Cambridge, the home of Araldite resins for adhesives and surface coatings. The following brief history of the site is taken from a new booklet published by CIBA‐Geigy to mark its anniversary.

This paper analyses the strategy of Ciba‐Geigy′s industrial division at three hierarchical levels, concentrating on subsidiary strategy in the Classical Pigments business. The analysis makes use of a number of models: the BCG matrix, White and Poynter′s model of subsidiary strategy, Porter′s configuration‐co‐ordination paradigm, and Prahalad and Doz’s integration‐responsiveness framework. The strengths and weaknesses of each are evaluated within this particular industrial environment. The main conclusion of the paper is that use of these four alternative analytical perspectives yields a more holistic view of strategy in the Classical Pigments business.

Ciba‐Geigy Pigments has announced the commissioning of new pigments production and processing plants at its headquarters in Paisley, Renfrewshire, 40 years after pigments production began there. Representing an investment of £39 million when fully completed, the new plants include production facilities for azo and phthalocyanine pigments and a pigments grinding unit, using internaly developed technology.

A new antitoxidant, Irganox L130, has recently been introduced by Ciba‐Geigy and has stirred up considerable interest against the current background of shortages and rising prices for some phenolic antitoxidants.
