Abstract

This lesson uses Steel Town to explore the making of steel and life in a steel mill town during the Great Depression. Moving through four centers, students explore resources such as photographs, first-hand accounts, recipes, and songs from the era to learn what life was like at a steel mill, in a steelworker’s home and neighborhood, and throughout the town. Based on their analyses of the resources provided, students compare the benefits and drawbacks of technology to answer the ultimate question regarding steel production: “Is it worth it?” This lesson was created for use in a second or third grade classroom but can be adjusted for older students with the extensions provided.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate different types of fire on structural steel members with damaged fireproofing. Two types of fire scenarios are considered, ASTM E119 fire and Hydrocarbon fire. In industrial facilities such as oil refineries, certain units maybe subjected to hydrocarbon fire, and its effect might be different than standard fire. The purpose of this study is to compare both types of fire scenarios on steel beams with damaged fireproofing and determine the fire rating of the damaged beams under each fire scenario.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is performed using computational methods, thermal-stress finite element analysis that is validated with experimental results. The results of practical beam sizes and typical applied loads in such structures have been plotted and compared with steel beams with non-damaged fireproofing.

Findings

The results show significant difference in the beam fire resistance between the two fire scenarios and show the fire resistance for beam under each case. The study provides percentage reduction in fire resistance under each case for the most commonly used cases in practice under different load conditions.

Originality/value

Extensive literature search has been performed by the authors, and few studies were found relevant to the topic. The question this study answers comes up regularly in practice. There are no standards to codes that address this issue.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the effect of damaged fireproofing on structural steel members. This study will show that a minor damage in fireproofing will reduce the fire rating of members significantly. Damaged fireproofing happens in structures due to various reasons, and the question is always how effective is this fireproofing? This paper presents the results of one type of fireproofing and presents a parametric study on the size of damage and its effect on fire resistance of structural steel members.

Design/methodology/approach

The study has been performed using numerical methods, thermal and structural finite element analysis. The analysis method has been verified by experimental results.

Findings

Small fire protection damage or loss leads to significant rise of temperature at the damaged parts and causes severe fire resistance reduction of beams. The higher fire protection damage’s extension at the bottom flange of the steel beams does not have any major influence on the rate of reduction of fire resistance of the beams. Steel beams experience greater fire resistance reduction at higher load levels because of the existing of higher stresses and loads within the steel beam section.

Research limitations/implications

The study has been performed using finite element analysis, and it covers a wide range of practical sizes. However, experimental work will be performed by the researchers when funding is granted.

Practical implications

The study provides researchers and practitioners with an estimate on the effect of damaged fireproofing on fire resistance of structural steel beams.

Social implications

Understanding the effect of the effect of damaged fireproofing helps in estimating the fire resistance of structural steel members, which may protect collapses and disasters.

Originality/value

The research is original; extensive literature review has been performed, and this research is original.

Abstract

Investigates the differences in protocols between arbitral tribunals and courts, with particular emphasis on US, Greek and English law. Gives examples of each country and its way of using the law in specific circumstances, and shows the variations therein. Sums up that arbitration is much the better way to gok as it avoids delays and expenses, plus the vexation/frustration of normal litigation. Concludes that the US and Greek constitutions and common law tradition in England appear to allow involved parties to choose their own judge, who can thus be an arbitrator. Discusses e‐commerce and speculates on this for the future.

The Internet allows high school students to access primary and secondary sources in the classroom. History teachers should consider different teaching and learning strategies to fully utilize these sources in the classroom. Problem-based learning offers an exciting alternative to the traditional history classroom where the lecture and the textbook are used daily. The author describes how he used problem-based learning and the Internet in his high school history classroom to motivate students to learn about the Great Migration. Background information on problem-based learning is given and suggestions are provided by the author to guide teachers step-by-step through this unique approach. Examples of WebPages on the Great Migration are provided which the author highly suggests using. In addition, the author provides detailed information on the causes and effects of the Great Migration to help the classroom teacher.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims at investigating the effect of bolt hole-making processes on the post-fire behavior of S235 steel plates.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of nine steel plates with a single bolt hole are tested. The single bolt holes are fabricated using three different hole-making processes: drilling, waterjet and plasma. Among the nine steel plates, three fabricated specimens are control specimens and are tested at ambient temperature. The six remaining steel plates with a single bolt hole are subjected to a complete heating-cooling cycle and then monotonically loaded until failure. The six fabricated specimens are first heated up to two different temperatures 800 and 925 °C, and then cooled back to the ambient prior to loading.

Findings

The results show that after being exposed to post-fire temperatures (800 and 925 °C), the maximum decrease in strength of the S235 steel plate was 6% (at 925 °C), 14% (at 925 °C) and 22% (at 800 °C) when compared to the results of ambient specimens for waterjet, drilled and plasma bolt holes, respectively. For post-fire temperature tests, drilled and waterjet bolt hole-making processes result in having approximately the same load-displacement response, and both have larger strength and ductility than those obtained using plasma cutting.

Originality/value

This study provides preliminary data to guide the steel designers and fabricators in choosing the most suitable hole-making process for fire applications and to quantify the post-fire reduction in capacity of S235 plates.

Abstract

Purpose

Different approaches, originally developed for ambient conditions, exist in current codes and standards for incorporating the effect of moment–shear (M–V) interaction on the plastic-carrying capacity of wide-flanged (WF) steel sections. There is a lack of experimental and theoretical studies that address this issue under fire conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The current paper presents a numerical study investigating the effect of fire exposure on the plastic M–V capacity curves of doubly symmetrical, WF, hot-rolled steel sections. Validated high-fidelity finite element (FE) models constructed via ANSYS are used to study the effect M–V interaction on the plastic capacity of WF sections. Also, a simplified plastic sectional analysis, intended to be used by engineering practitioners, is proposed for generating the plastic M–V interaction curves.

Findings

The study shows that the fire-induced non-uniform heating of the section plates affects the shape of the plastic M–V interaction capacity curves. Comparison of different methods against FE results shows that the method specified in the Eurocode is very conservative at room-temperature, but it turns out to be barely sufficiently conservative under fire conditions.

Originality/value

It is well noted that lack of fire tests on the M–V interaction, including the stability of the plates of steel sections under fire, make it difficult to reach a definite assessment on the effect of M–V interaction on the bearing capacity of steel beams.

Abstract

Purpose

It is common practice in structural engineering to assume floor diaphragms infinitely stiff in their own plane. But, most of the code provisions lack clarity and unity in categorising floor diaphragms and discussing their behaviour based on the seismic response of the structures. Besides, although many of these code provisions have presented simple techniques and formulations for determining the level of flexibility in floor diaphragms, the implementation of these techniques on more complex floor systems such as the steel-deck composite floors is still under question. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, an equivalent concrete floor is employed as a representative of in-plane diaphragm action of steel-deck composite floor, using simple modelling techniques in SAP2000 and the results are validated by complex structural models developed in ABAQUS. Afterwards, the equivalent floor is inserted to 3, 5 and 7 storey steel structures with 2, 3 and 5 plan aspect ratios in two categories of structures with rigid diaphragms and analogous structures with flexible diaphragms and the responses are compared to each other.

Findings

The results show that the proposed technique is an effective method for evaluating the diaphragm action of steel-deck composite floors. Additionally, it is concluded that, the boundary values of plan aspect ratio equal to 3 and λ coefficient equal to 0.5 in steel-deck composite floors, mentioned in code provisions for categorising diaphragms, are not always conservative and need to be scrutinised.

Originality/value

The proposed methodology provides simple framework for assessing the effects of in-plane flexibility of steel-deck composite on seismic response of steel structures.
