Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to perform instrumental comparison of hand parameters of knitted fabrics produced from different biodegradable fibres and to analyze peculiarities of hand parameters' extent influenced by fabric structure and chemical softening.

Design/methodology/approach

The hand of five types of different biodegradable fabrics was evaluated. Experiments were performed using a method based on the principle of specimen biaxial punching deformation when a disc‐shaped specimen is extracted through a round nozzle. The Influence of fabric weave (terry and plain jersey) and finishing (padding with the silicone softener “Belfasin SI”) on the fabric hand was investigated.

Findings

Investigations have shown that weave type and finishing significantly influenced fabric hand properties. It was also stated that even tenuous differences between fabric parameters could be obtained by one numeral value of complex hand rate Q.

Practical implications

Experiments have shown that KTU–Griff–Tester is a simple, reliable instrumental device suitable to obtain quantitative information about fabric mechanical properties. Evaluation of finishing influence on a fabric hand could be precisely expressed by one parameter Q.

Originality/value

In the present research quantitative evaluation of new fabrics from biodegradable fibres hand was performed. Comparison between new biodegradable and traditional cotton fabrics has shown that new biodegradable fibres which are generally used for underwear, sportswear and for medical application are characterized by soft hand, as a result a good affinity with skin.

Abstract

Purpose

Dehydrated bacterial cellulose’s (BC) intrinsic rigidity constrains applicability across textiles, leather, health care and other sectors. This study aims to yield a novel BC modification method using glycerol and succinic acid with catalyst and heat, applied via an industrially scalable padding method to tackle BC’s stiffness drawbacks and enhance BC properties.

Design/methodology/approach

Fabric-like BC is generated via mechanical dehydration and then finished by using padding method with glycerol, succinic acid, catalyst and heat. Comprehensive material characterizations, including international testing standards for stiffness, bending properties (cantilever method), tensile properties, moisture vapor transmission rate, moisture content and regain, washing, thermal gravimetric analysis, derivative thermogravimetry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and colorimetric measurement, are used.

Findings

The combination of BC/glycerol/succinic acid dramatically enhanced porous structure, elongation (27.40 ± 6.39%), flexibility (flexural rigidity of 21.46 ± 4.01 µN m; bending modulus of 97.45 ± 18.20 MPa) and moisture management (moisture vapor transmission rate of 961.07 ± 86.16 g/m2/24 h; moisture content of 27.43 ± 2.50%; and moisture regain of 37.94 ± 4.73%). This softening process modified the thermal stability of BC. Besides, this study alleviated the drawbacks for washing (five cycles) of BC and glycerol caused by the ineffective affinity between glycerol and cellulose by adding succinic acid with catalyst and heat.

Originality/value

The study yields an effective padding process for BC softening and a unique modified BC to contribute added value to textile and leather industries as a sustainable alternative to existing materials and a premise for future research on BC functionalization by using doable technologies in mass production as padding.

Ammonium Thiocyanate as Corrosion Inhibitor for Ammoniating Liquors and Ammonium Thiocyanate. J. T. Baker Chemical Co. The first of this American firm's two product bulletins deals with ammonium thiocyanate as an inhibitor for the corrosion of steel tanks and equipment employed for the storage and transportation of ammoniating liquors. In the present laboratory study, the effectiveness of ammonium thiocyanate as a corrosion inhibitor was evaluated under simulated field conditions. In contrast to stressed steel, it was found that stress‐relieved steel was relatively unattacked by ammoniating liquors. Increased air pressure or partial immersion did not influence corrosion rates.

Abstract

Manufacturing of thin film potentiometers involves using very special substrates, usually with complicated shapes and explicit dimensional tolerance. Commonly, such substrates should possess holes and recesses for assembling of the terminals as well as for mounting into housing. Particular difficulties are connected with the labour and time consumption necessary for forming of the molten glass, and limited utilisation of the glass substrates for potentiometer bodies. On the other hand, this material is the best one for the thin film elements. To solve these problems with the objective of producing inexpensive glass substrates for potentiometers, different tests were carried out with moulded elements made from glass powder. The aim of this research was the optimisation of a glass frit granulation and composition of the softening agent (plasticiser) as well as a choice of the temperature profile of firing of the moulded pieces to guarantee the precise structure of the substrate, essential for its application in thin film technology.

Abstract

Purpose

The application of rinse cycle softener after the household laundry process has become more common in recent times. This study aims to understand the effect of repeated rinse cycle softener treatment on the mechanical and frictional properties of the cotton fabric.

Design/methodology/approach

Cotton-woven fabric is treated with commercial rinse cycle softener repeatedly for 15 times. After treatment, the fabric was evaluated for the changes in mechanical properties using the Kawabata evaluation system.

Findings

The results of this study revealed that the softener treatment reduces the tensile properties (41.25%) and increases the overall extensibility of the fabric up to 20.89%. The shear (34.57%) and bending rigidity of the treated fabric are reduced considerably than the untreated fabric (58.02%). The increment in the fabric softness and fluffiness was confirmed with the increment in the compression and the difference between the initial and final thickness at maximum pressure. Statistical significance (p < 0.05) is noted only in the case of bending and surface friction properties (dynamic friction).

Originality/value

The usage of rinse cycle softeners in the household laundry has a significant influence on the comfort characteristics of the cotton-woven fabric. Repeated usage of rinse cycle softener increased the fabric softness and fluffiness of the fabric and also reduced the tensile properties significantly.

Abstract

Purpose

Lead frame tape is a crucial support for lead frames in the IC assembly process. The tape residue on the quad flat non-leaded (QFN) could result in low reliability and failure in electrical conductivity tests. The tape residue would affect overall performance of the chips and contribute to low pass yield. The purpose of this paper is to present an in-depth study of tape residue and factors that may affect it.

Design/methodology/approach

An experiment using lead frame and tapes from three manufacturers with two types of die bond adhesives, namely, die attach film (DAF) and wafer back coating (WBC), was conducted. Copper (Cu) wire bonding and die bonding performances were measured in terms of process capability, stitch bond strength and die attach strength.

Findings

Results showed that no tape residue was observed on the thermoplastic adhesive-based lead frames manufactured by Hitachi after the de-taping process because of the tape’s thermoplastic adhesive properties.

Originality/value

This paper studies the occurrence of tape residue and a viable solution for it through the correct process optimization and combination of semiconductor manufacturing materials. Factors that may affect tape residue have also been studied and further research can be done to explore other options in the future as an alternate solution.

This is indeed the age of revolution, when timeless attitudes are changing and new ways of living being born. To most it is a bewildering complex, with uneasy forbodirtgs of the outcome. Improvement and change, there must always be—although change is not necessarily progress—but with unrest in the schools, universities and industry, one naturally questions if this is the right time for such sweeping reorganization as now seems certain to take place in local government and in the structure of the national health service. These services have so far escaped the destructive influences working havoc in other spheres. Area health boards to administer all branches of the national health service, including those which the National Health Service Act, 1946 allowed local health authorities to retain, were recommended by the Porritt Committee a number of years ago, when it reviewed the working of the service.

Discusses the 1984 study review by the Department of the Environment of existing knowledge regarding landslipping in Great Britain. Reviews the background to the study and presents some of the general results. Concludes that knowledge of landslide distribution, character and significance remain surprisingly poor, that old (ancient) landslides are much more widely distributed in the landscape than previously thought, and that such old features present an important potential threat to buildings and structures because they can be reactivated if disturbed. Suggests that heightened perception of landslide hazard will lead to greater consideration of ground stability prior to developments, including increased use of various types of survey techniques that exist, and delimit areas of actual and potential instability.
