Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a numerical model used for calculating the nonlinearities of large-scale hydro-pneumatic suspension (HPS) and investigating the effects of variations in flow path and operational parameter on suspension damping response.

Design/methodology/approach

To parameterization nonlinearities of the suspension, the author developed a two-phase flow model of a large-scale HPS based on computational fluid dynamics and volume of fluid method. Considerable effort was made to verify the nonlinearities by field measurements carried out on an off-highway mining dump truck. The investigation of effects of variations in flow path and operational parameter on damping characteristics highlights the necessity of the numerical simulation.

Findings

The two-phase flow model can represent the gas-oil interaction and simulate the suspension operational movement conveniently. Transient numerical simulation results can be used to model the nonlinearities of large-scale HPS accurately. A new phenomenon was discovered that the pressure in rebound chamber presents reduction trend during compression stroke in special cases. It has never been reported before.

Originality/value

Developed a two-phase flow model of a large-scale HPS, which can manage the gas-oil interaction and capture the complex flow field structure in it. The paper is the first study to model the nonlinearities of a large-scale HPS used in off-highway mining dump truck through transient numerical simulation. Compared with previous researches, such a research not only gives new insight and thorough understanding into the suspension internal fluid structure but also can give good guiding opinions to the optimal design of HPS.

Abstract

Purpose

Grey set is the important foundation of the grey mathematics and grey system theory, and the possibility function is the way of expressing grey set. This paper aims to establish the method of determining the possibility function of grey set and discusses its extended applications.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the grey kernel and the grey support set of grey set are defined, and the properties of grey kernel are analyzed. Second, according to the decomposition theorem of grey set, a method of determining the possibility function of grey set is put forward in this paper, which is called the method of increasing information and taking maximum and minimum (IITMM), and then it is further simplified as the method of increasing information and taking maximum (IITM), and an simple example is given to illustrate the calculation procedure. Finally, the grey information cluster method (GICM) based on IITM is proposed and applied to the ecological and geographical environment analysis of pine caterpillar.

Findings

The results show that the grey kernel of grey set still has grey uncertainty; the method of IITM has simple calculation and strict mathematical basis, and it can synthesize the information of the research object and accords with the principle of using minimum information; the GICM and the fuzzy cluster method have the same classification effect.

Practical implications

The researches show that method of IITM can be used not only to determine the possibility function of the grey set effectively, but also be used for the evaluation and cluster analysis of connotative objects. The classification result of the GICM presented in this paper is more precise than that of the fuzzy cluster method.

Originality/value

The paper succeeds in realizing both the IITM method for determining the possibility function of grey set and the GICM based on IITM for the connotative objects.

Abstract

Purpose

Understanding farmers’ preferences for crop insurance attributes is crucial in designing better insurance products and guiding government policies but such research is lacking, particularly in developing countries. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a survey featuring a discrete choice experiment and policy simulation.

Findings

Overall, crop insurance has positive values to farmers, although preference is heterogeneous based on socioeconomic characteristics and risk position. Policy simulation confirms the roles of liability in strengthening insurance participants’ welfare and premium subsidy in encouraging participation. Introducing one more product into the market can accommodate farmers’ diverse needs and lead to increases in both aggregated social welfare and participation while maintaining the current level of government expense in subsidy – a potential Pareto improvement.

Research limitations/implications

Methodology employed is not the most novel in the choice experiment literature as many of the advances in choice experiment design could not be applied due to the actual condition in rural China and Chinese farmers’ capability in understanding the experiment.

Practical implications

The results indicate that the current single-product market structure using “low liability with high premium subsidies” cannot accommodate the diverse needs among farmers. Providing more varieties of liability-subsidy combinations, e.g. a high liability with low premium subsidy insurance product, can substantially improve participants’ welfare with little impact to the probability of participation.

Originality/value

The authors believe that this is one of the very few studies that that analyze farmers’ preferences and willingness to pay for the attributes of crop insurance products. It also shows how crop insurance product design can build upon farmers’ choices to achieve a potential Pareto improvement in aggregated social welfare in the context of a fast-developing crop insurance market.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to employ the Grey-Markov Chain Model for the scale prediction of cultivated land and took an empirical research with the case of Jiangsu province.

Design/methodology/approach

Along with China’s industrialization and urbanization accelerated, a large number of cultivated land converse into construction land. The change of utilization of cultivated land concerns national food security and sustainable development of economy and society. Due to the fact that the different investigation methods of arable land usually cause a uncertain. The Grey-Markov model combines the Grey GM(1,1) and Markov chain, with two advantages of dealing with poor information and long-term and volatile series. A numeric example of scale prediction of cultivated land in Jiangsu province is also computed in the third part of the paper.

Findings

The results show that the Grey-Markov Chain Model has a higher prediction accuracy compared with GM (1,1), which is a reliable guarantee for the change of cultivated land resources.

Practical implications

The forecast of cultivated land can provide useful information for the general land use planning.

Originality/value

The paper confirmed the feasibility of the Grey-Markov model in scale prediction of cultivated land.

Abstract

Purpose

Global climate change speeds up ice melting and increases flooding incidents. China launched a sponge city policy as a holistic nature-based solution combined with urban planning and development to address flooding due to climate change. Using Weibo analytics, this paper aims to study public perceptions of sponge city.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collected 53,586 sponge city contents from Sina Weibo via Python. Various artificial intelligence tools, such as CX Data Science of Simply Sentiment, KH Coder and Tableau, were applied in the study.

Findings

76.8% of public opinion on sponge city were positive, confirming its positive contribution to flooding management and city branding. 17 out of 31 pilot sponge cities recorded the largest number of sponge cities related posts. Other cities with more Weibo posts suffered from rainwater and flooding hazards, such as Xi'an and Zhengzhou.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to explore the public perception of sponge city in Sina Weibo.

The Web 3D virtual display technology for personalized clothing based on Unity3D is studied in this paper. The framework of the technology is described. The development steps including personalized clothing design and modeling, interaction and virtual display technology based on Unity3D are given out. The purpose of this paper is to provide a feasible technical route and support for the virtual display for the customized products.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper opted for an exploratory study using the open-ended approach of grounded theory, including the Web 3D virtual display technology for personalized clothing based on Unity3D.

Findings

A feasible technical route for the virtual display of the customized products is provides in this paper.

Originality/value

This paper fulfills a software and has practical use.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper mainly explores the relationship between digital inclusive finance and financing constraints of technological-based SMEs, and how digital inclusive finance affects the financing constraints of technology-based SMEs. This paper empirically analyzes the relationship between them through the OLS model, and then further verifies the relationship between them through robust regression and heterogeneity analysis. At the same time, it uses the mechanism test to explore how digital inclusive finance affects the financing constraints of technology-based SMEs. This paper aims to address these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper aims to explain the relationship between digital inclusive finance and financing constraints of technological-based SMEs. Technology-based SMEs always face the difficult problem of “financing difficulty” and “financing expensive” in the development process, which hinders the survival and development of enterprises to some extent. Digital inclusive finance development policy vigorously promoted by the state has alleviated the financing constraints of technology-based SMEs and brought opportunities for their development.

Findings

The results show that the role of digital inclusive finance in alleviating the financing constraints of technology-based SMEs, and incremental supplement and alleviating information asymmetry are the main reasons for digital inclusive finance to alleviate the financing constraints of technology-based SMEs. In view of the availability of digital inclusive financial data, this paper only uses the data from 2014 to 2019.

Originality/value

The authors’ research clearly found that the development of digital inclusive finance alleviates the financing of technology-based SMEs from the two aspects of “incremental supplement” and alleviating information asymmetry, so as to provide corresponding reference basis for the government to formulate a series of plans to support the development of technology-based SMEs.

Abstract

Purpose

Because of the small size and high integration of capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) component, it can be made into large-scale array, but this lead to high hardware complexity, so the purpose of this paper is to use less elements to achieve better imaging results. In this research, an optimized sparse array is studied, which can suppress the side lobe and reduce the imaging artifacts compared with the equispaced sparse array with the same number of elements.

Design/methodology/approach

Genetic algorithm is used to sparse the CMUT linear array, and Kaiser window apodization is added to reduce imaging artifacts, the beam pattern and peak-to-side lobe ratio are calculated, point targets imaging comparisons are performed. Furthermore, a 256-elements CMUT linear array is used to carry out the imaging experiment of embedded mass and forearm blood vessel, and the imaging results are compared quantitatively.

Findings

Through the imaging comparison of embedded mass and forearm blood vessel, the feasibility of optimized sparse array of CMUT is verified, and the purpose of reducing the hardware complexity is achieved.

Originality/value

This research provides a basis for the large-scale CMUT array to reduce the hardware complexity and the amount of calculation. At present, the CMUT array has been used in medical ultrasound imaging and has huge market potential.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper attempts to capture how self-initiated expatriates (SIEs) produce and reconstruct “self” and “place” through their own processes of expatriation and career development as mobility becomes a norm under present conditions of globalization. In so doing, the paper reexamines assumptions of previous expatriate adjustment scholarship by using phenomenon-driven problematization to critically reflect on underlying theoretical assumptions in the extant literature. Empirically, the paper is an exploratory attempt to understanding and offering fresh insights on the notion of expatriation itself under these present conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

Bougon's (1983) Self-Q technique was used to develop interview protocols uncovering cognitive maps of SIEs' “enacted environments” as an abstraction of their experiences, while also mapping their “enacted selves”. Analyzing social action with a cognitive map approach reveals the meanings of specific social territories, i.e. the enactment of SIEs' mobility environments (place) and their subjectivities (self).

Findings

The authors’ findings suggest that SIEs seem to be constituting and reconstituting their subjectivities and their sense of “place” by displacing the notion of “home”. This notion transforms and recedes as SIEs go about their lives abroad, allowing for the emergence of plural subjectivities, never fully formed but formulated and reformulated in social encounters.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the expatriation literature by focusing on processes through which SIEs construct their world through their mobility and overseas experiences. Observing expatriation processes as continuous cycles of creating and recreating “self” and “place” may reflect better how contemporary business practitioners engage in transnational activities. Management scholars should attend to how these processes enact social territories for a better understanding of expatriation as a global phenomenon.
