Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a numerically efficient multi-objective optimization strategy, which can improve both the efficiency and performance during the optimization process.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper discusses the multi-objective optimization algorithm by combining multi-objective differential evolution (MODE) algorithm with an adaptive dynamic Taylor Kriging (ADTK) model.

Findings

The proposed approach is validated through application to an analytic example and applied to a shape optimal design of a multi-layered interior permanent magnet synchronous motor for torque ripple reduction while maintaining the average torque.

Originality/value

The ADTK model selects its basis functions adaptively and dynamically so that it may have better accuracy than any other Kriging models. Through adaptive insertion of new sampling data, it guarantees minimum required sampling data for a desired fitting accuracy.

Abstract

A novel 3D shape optimization algorithm is presented for electromagnetic devices carrying eddy current. The algorithm integrates the 3D finite element performance analysis and the steepest descent method with design sensitivity and mesh relocation method. For the design sensitivity formula, the adjoint variable vector is defined in complex form based on the 3D finite element method for eddy current problems. A new 3D mesh relocation method is also proposed using the deformation theory of the elastic body under stress to renew the mesh as the shape changes. The design sensitivity for the surface nodal points is also systematically converted into that for the design variables for the parameterized optimization application. The proposed algorithm is applied to the optimum design of the tank shield model of transformer and the effectiveness is proved.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the vector magnetic properties of the electrical steel sheet and investigate its influences on the magnetic field and iron loss distributions for the electrical machines.

Design/methodology/approach

The vector magnetic property of the electrical steel sheet is measured by using a two-dimensional single sheet tester and modelled through an E&S vector hysteresis model to be applied to finite element analysis.

Findings

The magnetic field and iron loss distributions are calculated by finite element analysis combined with the E&S vector hysteresis model for the three-phase transformer and induction motor models.

Originality/value

The influences of the vector magnetic property on the electrical machines are verified by comparing with the numerical results from a scalar magnetic property.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a multi-objective optimization algorithm, which can improve both the performance robustness and the constraint feasibility when the uncertainty in design variables is considered.

Design/methodology/approach

Multi-objective robust optimization by gradient index combined with the reliability-based design optimization (RBDO).

Findings

It is shown that searching for the optimal design of the TEAM problem 22, which can minimize the magnetic stray field by keeping the target system energy (180 MJ) and improve the feasibility of superconductivity constraint (quenching condition), is possible by using the proposed method.

Originality/value

RBDO method applied to the electromagnetic problem cooperated with the design sensitivity analysis by the finite element method.
