Abstract

Focusses on the identification of the significant differences in the assessment of the importance of 35 carrier selection variables by both carriers and shippers. The results indicate that significant perceptual differences do exist for those surveyed, and it is quite possible that such differences also exist in the general population. Industrial marketing managers involved in satisfying shipper needs must gain an appreciation of actual shipper needs in order to develop service mixes which will satisfy those needs more thoroughly.

Abstract

The signing of the Motor Carrier Act of 1980 has brought a temporary reduction in the rhetoric for or against motor carrier deregulation. Although the final Bill was a long way from totally deregulating the motor carrier industry, it does mark the continuation of a trend toward less regulation by the Federal Government. Since other countries have liberalised or completely removed their transportation regulations, it is reasonable to assume that legislation further reducing motor carrier regulation will be enacted if even a small measure of success can be attributed to The Motor Carrier Act of 1980. The period of uncertainty just before this Bill was signed into law encouraged motor carrier executives to think about life in a deregulated enviroment. This study attempts to examine their conceptions of the changes that would occur and make a comparison with what has actually happened during the 25 years since inter‐state surface transportation was regulated in Australia.

Abstract

Refers to the recent trend to utilize strategic alliances and partnerships for securing both goods and services. Additionally, the supply chain management concept is gaining more acceptance as a method of sustaining a competitive advantage in global markets. Although the literature explores strategic partnerships within both the buyer and supplier context and the shipper and logistics context, there has been little attempt to link these relationships in order to explore multi‐firm interactions. Examines existing buyer‐supplier strategic partnerships and the role of carriers used to transport the particular items sourced within these partnerships through an in‐depth case study methodology of firms engaged in identifiable three‐party relationships. There are two primary objectives of this research: to assess the carriers’ perceived importance and degree of participation within the buyer‐supplier partnerships; and to explore further the relationship between strategic partnerships and supply chain management by presenting more detailed information from firms involved in three‐way relationships. Of interest to carriers, manufacturers, purchasers and academics.

Abstract

Examines the difference in perceptions of 18 carrier selections factors between import shippers, export shippers, and international containership carriers. MANOVA was used to determine differences between the three groups. Suggests that there are significant differences between import shippers and carriers; export shippers and carriers; and import shippers and export shippers. Significant differences between the import shipper and carrier groups were found on the loss and damage and equipment availability factors. Significant differences between the export shipper and carrier groups were found on the rate changes, service frequency, financial stability, service changes, and equipment availability factors. The only significant difference between the import shipper and export shipper groups was found on the door‐to‐door transportation rates factor.

Abstract

A great deal of attention in physical distribution management has been raised by both practitioners and academicians as to what type of carrier service is desired by shippers and consignees. From the viewpoint of the buying system, the selection of an appropriate transport mode and the selection of a given carrier and particular services offered by the carrier is an important decision. Billions of dollars are spent annually by the shipping public. The sheer magnitude of the expenditure coupled with the limitation on customer service which can result from the carrier selection choice is making it an increasingly important decision. Purchasing systems need better information concerning carrier selection variables than they now have to enable them to design the organisation for buying carrier services, and to select, train, and supervise traffic people as well as to decide how much of the process can be computerised.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to solve the challenging problem of automatic carrier landing with the presence of environmental disturbances. Therefore, a global fast terminal sliding mode control (GFTSMC) method is proposed for automatic carrier landing system (ACLS) to achieve safe carrier landing control.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the framework of ACLS is established, which includes flight glide path model, guidance model, approach power compensation system and flight controller model. Subsequently, the carrier deck motion model and carrier air-wake model are presented to simulate the environmental disturbances. Then, the detailed design steps of GFTSMC are provided. The stability analysis of the controller is proved by Lyapunov theorems and LaSalle’s invariance principle. Furthermore, the arrival time analysis is carried out, which proves the controller has fixed time convergence ability.

Findings

The numerical simulations are conducted. The simulation results reveal that the proposed method can guarantee a finite convergence time and safe carrier landing under various conditions. And the superiority of the proposed method is further demonstrated by comparative simulations and Monte Carlo tests.

Originality/value

The GFTSMC method proposed in this paper can achieve precise and safe carrier landing with environmental disturbances, which has important referential significance to the improvement of ACLS controller designs.

Abstract

Purpose — The main objective of this survey is to collect data for the development of six models in a freight modeling framework. The framework aims to simulate the interactions between shippers and carriers in a freight market.

Methodology/approach — A web-based survey was designed using stated preference methods and experimental auctions, to collect information about shipper and carrier behavior when facing hypothetical situations. Hypothetical situations were constructed using information collected during the survey.

Findings — The modeling results are available for one model, the carrier selection model. In this model, data were collected using stated preference (SP) methods. Nine SP designs were developed using D-designs and an approach to minimize the nonattendance problem. A multinomial probit model was used. No bias was found due to the position of alternatives on the screen, signs of the parameters are as expected, and level of service attributes are relevant in the carrier selection process.

Research limitations/implications — The final response rate was small (about 9%) which is not uncommon in surveys with freight managers. This response rate might result in nonresponse bias of the estimates, which is the subject of future research.

Practical implications — Since freight transport is the output of a freight market, the application of the freight modeling framework presented in this chapter has potential to improve forecasts of freight flows.

Originality/value of chapter — To the best of our knowledge, the survey presented in this chapter consists of an innovative data collection procedure for the development of an original freight modeling framework.

Abstract

This chapter uses airline data on fares, traffic, and flight characteristics to estimate a series of fare equations for international flights. The results are used to examine the role of international competition as a determinant of fares along international flights originating or departing from the United States. Findings suggest that actual and potential competition are important determinants of international airfares. We interpret these results as indicating that pricing behavior along US–international routes is consistent with the theory of imperfect contestability.
