Abstract
The utility of career planning for managers is evaluated. The current activities and beliefs of practising managers are drawn on. The results of a study of 50 women and men managers support other empirical findings and point to the absence of career planning and future plans in managers′ lives. This is contrary to the advice given to women managers, in particular, which advocates the importance of career planning in career advancement. Implications drawn for management development suggest that career planning is not useful as a broad strategy for advancement, is a misnomer, and may lead managers into following plans rather than developing the flexibility to take opportunities.

Abstract
Purpose
This article aims to examine the boundary conditions of the relationship between career planning and turnover intention and the joint moderating effects of career plateau and risk-taking propensity on the relationships between career plateau and turnover intention.
Design/methodology/approach
The data of this paper is collected from 231 employees from Taiwanese organizations with more than four years of work experience.
Findings
The results indicate that career plateau significantly moderates the relationships between career planning and turnover intention. The relationships between career planning and turnover intention are weaker when career plateau and risk-taking propensity are low in the three-way interaction effect.
Originality/value
The article examined the moderated moderation model of career planning and turnover intention using career plateau and risk-taking propensity as moderators.

Abstract
Purpose
Drawing on proactivity literature, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between employee’s proactive career planning (taking initiative to prepare for one’s career) and proactive career enacting (taking initiative to act on career plans). This study also looks into the influence of proactive personality and cognitive complexity in the relationship between proactive career planning and proactive career enacting.
Design/methodology/approach
Survey data were collected in Australia (study 1; n=271) and were tested using structural equation modeling. Another set of survey data were collected in a different cultural context in the Philippines (study 2; n=215) for cross-cultural validation.
Findings
Results show that proactive career planning and proactive career enacting are positively and significantly related in both cultural contexts. Results also show that proactive personality or the stable disposition of an individual to take initiative and be involved in future-oriented actions plays a significant role in moderating the relationship between proactive career planning and proactive career enacting. In addition, results show that cognitive complexity which pertains to an individual’s capacity to construe social behaviors in multidimensional ways moderates the relationship between proactive career planning and proactive career enacting.
Practical implications
In today’s turbulent environment, employees need to be proactive when developing their careers. This study highlights the importance of being proactive when managing one’s career. Employees’ proactive personality and cognitive complexity also help in strengthening the link between proactive career planning and proactive career enacting, hence, these individual-level characteristics need to be developed and enhanced in organizations.
Originality/value
This study is valuable as it extends and advances the understanding on how proactivity (proactive career planning, proactive career enacting, proactive personality) and cognitive complexity can contribute to career development of employees.

Abstract
Purpose
The world of work is changing rapidly as a result of technology, with more workers being impacted by automation, the gig economy and temporary work contracts. This study focusses on how employees perceive their disruption knowledge and how this perception impacts their career planning, career satisfaction and training behaviors.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors use data from 1,516 employees across a broad range of industries and professions from the United States (n = 505), New Zealand (n = 505) and Australia (n = 506).
Findings
The authors find that an employee's knowledge and research into automation positively influence how employees plan their careers, their career satisfaction and their training behaviors. While career planning is positively related to career satisfaction and training behavior, career satisfaction is negatively related to training behaviors. The authors test mediation effects and find consistently significant indirect effects, and these findings are all largely replicated across the three countries.
Originality/value
This study highlights the importance of understanding the processes that employees go through when thinking about disruption knowledge, their careers and the impact on their training behaviors.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper investigates the mediating role of career planning attitudes (career optimism, career adaptability and perceived knowledge of job market) on the relationship between motivational factors (goal, emotion, context belief and capability belief) and career decisiveness.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected from 302 undergraduate final semester students in India. Data were collected using survey questionnaire methods at two phases T1 and T2 within an interval of eight months. Structural equation modeling using AMOS was used for data analysis.
Findings
The findings of the study suggested that individual components of career planning attitudes as well as the collective career planning attitudes fully mediate dimensions of motivational systems theory and career decisiveness relationship.
Practical implications
The findings of the study could help those who are associated with developing and conducting career planning and development programs.
Originality/value
This study explored the antecedents and consequences of career planning attitudes, integrating both individual and contextual factors.

Abstract
Purpose
Considerable research has linked leaders’ development practices to employee performance, but little research has concentrated on how succession planning minimizes the turnover intentions. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of succession planning on turnover intentions among banking professionals. Moreover, the authors examine whether succession planning enhances the employee job security and creates career attitude that mitigates the risk of employee turnover intentions.
Design/methodology/approach
Using the survey method, the authors recruited permanent employees of retail banking and the proposed model and structural relationships were tested via structural equation modeling.
Findings
The findings depict that succession planning provides job security and creates positive career attitude which in turn mitigate the turnover intentions among banks employees.
Practical implications
The present study helps the bank management to formulate a strategic and proactive succession system based on job security and build a strong career attitude to discourage the turnover intentions among banks employees. Moreover, the outcome supports the management of banks in case of the sudden resignation of a bank employee; they will be in a position to appoint a resourceful employee immediately on the vacant post to provide excellent customer services.
Originality/value
The current study successfully developed an empirical relationship between succession planning and turnover intentions which was skipped in the literature on human resource development. Furthermore, this study offers an important mediation mechanism for job security and career attitude for mitigating the turnover intentions among banks employees through succession planning.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the direct effects of job support and the indirect effects of individual career planning on the motivational process of training transfer, which consists of the structural relationship between learning goal orientation, learning motivation, transfer motivation and training transfer.
Design/methodology/approach
An online survey was administered to 255 respondents in South Korea, and 252 valid responses were used for analysis. A hypothetical model was examined using a structural equation model and multi-group analysis.
Findings
This study found that the synchronous process model of training transfer was well validated in the Korean context; moreover, job support promoted employee motivations that led to their training transfer. In addition, career planning was found to have a moderating role in the relationships explored in this study. That is, when the level of career planning was high, job support directly affected the motivation to transfer, and the link between intrinsic learning orientation and motivation to learn was highly activated compared to the group with a low level of career planning.
Research limitations/implications
This study is limited by the single-dimensional measurement of its constructs, including job support, goal orientation and motivation to transfer. This limitation should be considered when interpreting the study’s results. In terms of implications, the study suggests that organizations should help individuals identify their career interests and establish a strategy to achieve their career goals by providing information about specific areas of interest.
Originality/value
This study proposes that the motivational mechanisms leading to training transfer are affected by trainees’ level of career planning. In addition, the study findings emphasize the importance of organizations’ role in guiding individual employees’ career planning to facilitate performance through training transfer.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to address and observe the positive side of perceived overqualification (POQ) on employee knowledge sharing (KS) and career planning. Role identity theory highlights that an employee’s POQ is related to employee career identity in a positive way.
Design/methodology/approach
The hypotheses were supported by a time-lagged examination of 277 supervisor–subordinate dyads working in the corporate sector.
Findings
The findings state that a person’s career identity is associated with increased KS and career planning. Furthermore, the effect of overqualification on KS and career planning was predicted to be mediated by career identity. Using an interactionism mechanism, this study indicated that this mediation is moderated by leader humility. The career identities of overqualified employees are elevated when a humble leader supports them. The results suggest that, when handled appropriately, POQ may benefit both employees and organizations.
Research limitations/implications
The implications of these results are examined theoretically and practically. Moreover, the findings of this study will open new avenues for scholars and practitioners in the field of organizational behavior and human resource management.
Originality/value
The study examined the positive side of POQ and its effect on employees’ career outcomes and KS attitudes. This study is among the first empirical studies to examine career outcomes and KS behavior due to POQ.
