Abstract

Process capability indices as an important kind of indices are intended to provide single‐number assessments of the inherent process capability to meet specification limits on quality characteristic(s) of interest. In this paper the condition for the application of process capability indices is analyzed. On the basis of process capability indices, dynamic process capability indices as a new kind of indices to show the current process capability are discussed and the condition for the application of dynamic process capability indices is exhibited. Comparison between process capability index and dynamic process capability index and comparison between Dp and Dpk are made and the conclusions provide the approach for process control. According to the requirement of process capability indices provided by customer, quality control based on process capability indices dynamic process capability indices is ciscussed.

Abstract

Purpose

In the past few years, several capability indices have been developed for evaluating the performance of multivariate manufacturing processes under the normality assumption. However, this assumption may not be true in most practical situations. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to develop new capability indices for evaluating the performance of multivariate processes subject to non-normal distributions.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors propose three non-normal multivariate process capability indices (MPCIs) RNMC p , RNMC pm and RNMC pu by relieving the normality assumption. Using the two normal MPCIs proposed by Pan and Lee, a weighted standard deviation method (WSD) is used to modify the NMC p and NMC pm indices for the-nominal-the-best case. Then the WSD method is applied to modify the multivariate ND index established by Niverthi and Dey for the-smaller-the-better case.

Findings

A simulation study compares the performance of the various multivariate indices. Simulation results show that the actual non-conforming rates can be correctly reflected by the proposed capability indices. The numerical example further demonstrates that the actual quality performance of a non-normal multivariate process can properly reflected by the proposed capability indices.

Practical implications

Process capability index is an important SPC tool for measuring the process performance. If the non-normal process data are mistreated as a normal one, it will result in an improper decision and thereby lead to an unnecessary quality loss. The new indices can provide practicing managers and engineers with a better decision-making tool for correctly measuring the performance for any multivariate process or environmental system.

Originality/value

Once the existing multivariate quality/environmental problems and their Key Performance Indicators are identified, one may apply the new capability indices to evaluate the performance of various multivariate processes subject to non-normal distributions.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to consider the effect of gauge measurement capability on the multivariate process capability index (MCp).

Design/methodology/approach

With respect to measurement capability, the paper investigates the statistical properties of the estimated MCp and considers the effect of gauge measurement capability on the lower confidence bound, hypothesis testing, critical value and power of testing for MCp at the mentioned state.

Findings

The results show that gauge measurement capabilities will notably change the results of estimating and testing the process capability index.

Originality/value

The research would help quality experts to determine whether their processes meet the required capability, and to make more reliable decisions.

Assert that capability indices quantify process improvement in a simple way and, when used correctly, provide relevant benchmarks. Considers it important that managers fully understand the power and limitations of this quality tool. Asserts the process is on target when Cp and Cpk are equal. Contends that the observed differences are due to sampling error and that any capability index is simply an estimate of an unknown value. Concludes that the measurement of process capability and the assessment on internal and external suppliers performance using indices, is now widespread. Despite any problems, process capability indices are preferable to many other measures of process or supplier performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a quantitative measure for organizational renewal capability which would enable inter‐firm comparison and external communication. To make the tool more concrete for the reader, a case organization with the measurement results and conclusions is described.

Design/methodology/approach

A method of how renewal capability can be shown on an organizational level and measurement is demonstrated. The approach is based on systems thinking, but it also has boundary surfaces with the knowledge‐based theory of the firm, dynamic capability approach, and intellectual capital (IC) research. A tool for analyzing and measuring organizational renewal, called KM‐factor®, and the theoretical model behind it, is presented.

Findings

The preliminary analysis indicates that the indexes of KM‐factor® correlate strongly with the future financial success of the company. Thus, the results refer to the fact that companies with (system based and strategy connected) renewal capability have more competitive advantage than others. It is crucial for the organization to understand the required change direction in renewal capability to achieve sustainable competitive advantage.

Originality/value

The topic of renewal has been increasingly dealt with by the research traditions of IC, knowledge management and strategic management. However, even if several relatively consolidated theories about the composition of IC or competitiveness have been presented – renewal being one of the components – the operational and measurement perspectives of continuous renewal have mainly been neglected. This paper demonstrates a quantitative and practical implementation of organizational renewal capability measurement.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to provide a new loss function‐based risk assessment method so the likelihood and consequence resulting from the failure of a manufacturing or environmental system can be evaluated simultaneously.

Design/methodology/approach

Instead of using risk matrices of the occurrence and consequence separately for evaluating manufacturing and environmental risks, an integrated approach by exploring the relationship between process capability indices: Cp, Cpk and Cpm, and three different loss functions: Taguchi's loss function; Inverted normal loss function (INLF); and Revised inverted normal loss function (RINLF) is proposed.

Findings

The new method of quantitative risk assessment linking the likelihood and expected loss of failure is illustrated by two numeric examples. The results suggest that the revised inverted normal loss function (RINLF) be used in assessing manufacturing and environmental risks.

Practical implications

It gives decision‐makers a concrete tool to assess the likelihood and consequence of their processes. Linking the process capability indices and loss functions is particularly promising, as this provides a useful risk assessment tool for practitioners who want to reduce hazardous waste and manufacturing losses from their facilities.

Originality/value

The manufacturing and environmental risks are determined by paring the process capability indices and loss function. From the loss function‐based estimation, one can quantify the consequence of a manufacturing loss and get the severity rating in an objective way.

Abstract

Purpose

Tanjung Mas, an urban village located in the northern part of Semarang city, has been facing a major impact of coastal inundation occurring along North Java Coastline. This by-product of global climate change is also affecting a 37-hectares slum, one of the largest slums in Semarang city. As the coastal flood tends to escalate every year, the affected areas must have a coping ability to reduce its impact, while also having adequate resources to recover. Considering Tanjung Mas’ dense demographic condition and its function as the city’s seaport, social vulnerability and capability play a significant role in mitigating and recovering flood impacts, in supplement to local government’s effort of strengthening the Northern Java Seawall. Therefore, this study aims to scored and correlated Tanjung Mas’ social vulnerability index (SoVI) and community capability index to assess how well its population can recover from the tidal flood in the future.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used the SoVI framework analysis to synthesize relevant social vulnerability indicators and community capability indicators in Tanjung Mas. The two sets of indicators were correlated with Pearson R-squared correlation method to seek a possible non-causal relation. Bivariate indices mapping method exhibit the SoVI and community capability index spatially to show every area’s vulnerability and capability level.

Findings

The vulnerability and capability level in Tanjung Mas vary within its smaller area, as six combinations of social vulnerability and community capability level were found. The worst combination was found on areas closer to the coastline, with high social vulnerability and low community capability level. These areas need to be strengthened in both its capability and coping ability toward coastal flood to realize a resilient community.

Originality/value

This study will be useful for local governments as a supplement to the strategic spatial plan, predominantly in prioritizing vulnerable area treatment prior to the completion of Northern Java Seawall in 2025. This study provides information and a simplified quantitative scoring result of vulnerability and capability level in slum area that has been customized according to Indonesia’s demographic characteristic. These results and framework might be relevant to SoVI and capability scoring in developing countries.

The experimental data were randomly generated instead of real world ones.

Practical implications

The proposed model is specifically designed for manufacturing industries with high sampling cost.

The one-sided capability indices were utilized for the first time to be suitable for the purpose.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate roles of financial literacy, financial behavior, and financial capability as mediating factors between financial education and financial satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

Data are from the 2012 National Financial Capability Study, a large national data set with detailed information on financial satisfaction, education, literacy, behavior, capability, and related variables. Mediation analyses are used to answer research questions.

Findings

Financial education may affect financial satisfaction, a subjective measure of financial well-being, through financial literacy, financial behavior, and financial capability variables. Results show that subjective financial literacy, desirable financial behavior and a financial capability index (a sum of Z-scores of objective financial literacy, subjective financial literacy, desirable financial behavior, and perceived financial capability) are strong mediators between financial education and financial satisfaction.

Research limitations/implications

The study has used cross sectional data that can only document associations between financial education and satisfaction and the mediators between them. Future research could use relevant longitudinal data to verify multiple benefits of financial education.

Practical implications

The findings have implications for financial service professionals to take advantages of multiple benefits of financial education in content acquisition, confidence in knowledge and ability, and action taking when they communicate with their clients.

Social implications

Policy makers on consumer financial education may use the information to advocate and promote effective education programs to improve consumer financial well-being.

Originality/value

This study is the first of this kind to examine the association between financial education and financial satisfaction and several financial capability variables as mediating factors.
