Abstract

This chapter compares the performance of the maximum simulated likelihood (MSL) approach with the composite marginal likelihood (CML) approach in multivariate ordered-response situations. The ability of the two approaches to recover model parameters in simulated data sets is examined, as is the efficiency of estimated parameters and computational cost. Overall, the simulation results demonstrate the ability of the CML approach to recover the parameters very well in a 5–6 dimensional ordered-response choice model context. In addition, the CML recovers parameters as well as the MSL estimation approach in the simulation contexts used in this study, while also doing so at a substantially reduced computational cost. Further, any reduction in the efficiency of the CML approach relative to the MSL approach is in the range of nonexistent to small. When taken together with its conceptual and implementation simplicity, the CML approach appears to be a promising approach for the estimation of not only the multivariate ordered-response model considered here, but also for other analytically intractable econometric models.

This case study deals specifically with the issue of manufacturing strategy, and business strategy.

Study level/applicability

The case can be used in a number of course contexts, including undergraduate and MBA programs. The focus is on both business strategy and manufacturing strategy issues. The case can be assigned as an opening vignette, during the initial phases of business strategy, since the case situations and concepts are both simple and clear. It can also be assigned for an in-depth treatment of manufacturing strategy.

Case overview

The case focuses on Capital Mills Limited (CML), a flour milling company, and concentrates on whether the company should refurbish its two 40-year old flour mills at a cost of US$6 million or if the company should invest US$15 million in the construction and installation of a new, fully-automated “Lights out” flour mill. This decision is viewed as a “make or break” decision for CML, since for the first time in the company's 40 year history will it face significant direct competition, in the form of the impending entry of a second flour milling company.

Expected learning outcomes

The case has four primary learning objectives, namely to: illustrate the linkages between business level strategy and the functional level, manufacturing strategy; discuss the role of a company's history and internal resource structure in the decision making process; explore how operational issues influence capital expenditure decisions; and explore the perspective of managers in different functions in an organization that is facing a new competitive challenge.

Abstract

Purpose

Libraries are closing or reducing opening hours in the UK due to budgetary cuts. Library provision for children is consequently diminishing and libraries have to justify their existence. Therefore a reliable methodology for assessing the importance of libraries is vital to demonstrate their value to children’s literacy. Two methodologies were combined to study children visiting children’s mobile libraries (CMLs). The purpose of this paper is to consider whether the combined, qualitative methodology was the correct choice.

Design/methodology/approach

Aspects of each methodology are examined for their appropriateness for researching children. The compatibility of their philosophical stance and the validity of combining ethnography and grounded theory is explored and questioned.

Findings

It is found that grounded theory and ethnography were the optimum combination to form a powerful research tool that allows children to be active participants in research. The combined methodology was successful because the ethnographic elements allowed the researcher to enter to the children’s world, whereas the grounded theory elements provided a structural framework, exploration into a novel research topic and ensured that a valid conclusion was drawn.

Originality/value

It is unusual for qualitative methodologies such as grounded theory and ethnography to be combined in order to study learning in a non-pedagogic, library environment. This paper is valuable reading for librarians, or educationalists wishing to examine how libraries aid literacy because it verifies the benefits of the combined methodology of grounded theory and ethnography and provides a template which can be used by other researchers.

Abstract

This chapter is written from the perspective of an experienced middle leader reflecting on what would have been a powerful approach to solving curriculum challenges at the launch of their middle leadership journey. The approach is learning and leading through collaborative inquiry; a process that provides the pathway and direction for a curriculum middle leader (CML) to engage in inquiry to solve a challenge of practice. A CML invests a great deal of time and effort in unpacking and understanding the ‘why’ of a curriculum challenge. This is achieved through unpacking and understanding the ‘how’ which led to the challenge, and thus, strong strategic skills are required. Additionally, effective CMLs do not undertake this work in isolation, rather, they build and facilitate a professional learning community (PLC) (Stoll et al., 2006) of curriculum enthusiasts to undertake this journey with them, which requires substantial relational trust.

Abstract

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is the alpha/beta test site for 3M™ Library Systems Digital Identification System, a cutting‐edge technology in library materials flow and collection management. This article discusses the components of the system and their assimilation and testing at a UNLV branch library, the Curriculum Materials Library (CML), in anticipation of the opening of Lied Library. Challenges and discoveries in the development of the system and implementation differences between a small and large library are outlined. Future growth for both product development and the UNLV libraries’ use of the system are forecasted.

Abstract

Purpose

To explore the interactions between branch libraries and a new main library, in the area of technology equipment and services.

Design/methodology/approach

Following an introduction which highlights the major elements in place at UNLV Libraries for networking and equipment, each branch situation is described and evaluated.

Findings

The advantages of UNLV Libraries' philosophical approach to consistent patron access at all points of service are found to be substantial, and include regular equipment and software upgrades, as well as systems expertise. The major disadvantage proves to be flexibility in approaching patron needs.

Practical implications

Provides a philosophical basis and concrete examples of branch efforts to provide adequate technology and services to their patrons.

Originality/value

Useful to branch librarians making a case for enhanced resources, or discussing possible configurations of responsibility regarding technology equipment and services.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a blended mobile game-based learning service called CoboChild Mobile Exploration Service (hereinafter CoboChild) to support children’s learning in an environment blending virtual game worlds and a museum’s physical space. The contextual model of learning (CML) was applied to consider the related influential factors affecting museum learning and to promote children’s continuous learning and revisit motivations.

Design/methodology/approach

CoboChild provides a thematic game-based learning environment to facilitate children’s interactions with exhibits and other visitors. A practical system has been implemented in the National Museum of Natural Science (NMNS), Taiwan. A questionnaire was used to examine whether CoboChild can effectively fulfill the CML and to evaluate the impacts on museum learning.

Findings

CoboChild effectively fulfilled the CML to facilitate children’s interactive experiences and re-visit motivations in the blended mobile game-based learning environment. Most children described the system as providing fruitful playfulness while improving their interpretations of exhibitions and learning experiences.

Practical implications

CoboChild considers the related contextual influences on the effective support of children’s learning in a museum, and builds a child-centered museum learning environment with highly integrated blended learning resources for children. CoboChild has been successfully operating in the NMNS since 2011.

Originality/value

This study developed a blended mobile game-based learning service to effectively support children’s learning in museum contexts. The related issues are shown to improve the design of blended museum learning services. This innovative approach can be applied to the design of other child-centered services for engaging children’s interactive experiences in museums.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper is an unprecedented effort to resolve the performance issue of very large scale integrated circuits (VLSI) interconnects encountered because of the scaling of device dimensions. Repeater interpolation technique is an effective approach for enhancing speed of interconnect network. Proposed buffers as repeater are modeled by using dual chirality multi-Vt technology to reduce delay besides mitigating average power consumption. Interconnects modeled with carbon nanotube (CNT) technology are compared with copper interconnect for various lengths. Buffer circuits are designed with both CNT and metal oxide semiconductor technology for comparison by using various combination of (CMOSFET repeater-Cu interconnect) and (CNTFET repeater-CNT interconnect). Compared to conventional buffer, ProposedBuffer1 saves dynamic power by 84.86%, leakage power by 88% and offers reduction in delay by 72%. ProposedBuffer2 brings about dynamic power saving of 99.94%, leakage power saving of 93%, but causes delay penalty. Simulation using Stanford SPICE model for CNT and silicon-field effective transistor berkeley short-channel IGFET Model4 (BSIM4) predictive technology model (PTM) for MOS is done in H simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis for 32 nm.

Design/methodology/approach

Usually, the dynamic power consumption dominates the total power, while the leakage power has a negligible effect. But with the scaling of device technology, leakage power has become one of the important factors of consideration in low power design techniques. Various strategies are explored to suppress the leakage power in standby mode. The adoption of a multi-threshold design strategy is an effective approach to improve the performance of buffer circuits without compromising on the delay and area overhead. Unlike MOS technology, to implement multi-Vt transistors in case of CNT technology is quite easy. It can be achieved by varying diameter of carbon nanotubes using chirality control.

Findings

An unprecedented approach is taken for optimizing the delay and power dissipation and hence drastically reducing energy consumption by keeping proper harmony between wire technology and repeater-buffer technology. This paper proposes two novel ultra-low power buffers (PB1 and PB2) as repeaters for high-speed interconnect applications in portable devices. PB1 buffer implemented with high-speed CML technique nested with multi-threshold (Vt) technology sleep transistor so as to improve the speed along with a reduction in standby power consumption. PB2 is judicially implemented by inserting separable sized, dual chirality P type carbon nanotube field effective transistors. The HSpice simulation results justify the correctness of schemes.

Originality/value

Result analysis points out that compared to conventional Cu interconnect, the CNT interconnects paired with Proposed CNTFET buffer designs are more energy efficient. PB1 saves dynamic power by 84.86%, reduces propagation delay by 72% and leakage power consumption by 88%. PB2 brings about dynamic power saving of 99.4%, leakage power saving of 93%, with improvement in speed by 52%. This is mainly because of the fact that CNT interconnect offers low resistance and CNTFET drivers have high mobility and ballistic mode of operation.
