Abstract

A comparison was made between CDS/ISIS, its Windows version WINISIS, and InMagic’s INMAGIC and DB/TextWorks software. Packages were evaluated for their database creation, information retrieval and report production capabilities. Windows versions were found to provide significant enhancements over DOS versions of software. The evaluation aimed to determine the advantages to a developing country of creating bibliographic databases using commercial software.

Abstract

The computer software package CDS/ISIS is suitable for the storage and retrieval of structured, text‐oriented information, such as bibliographic descriptions. Versions exist for various hardware including IBM microcomputers and compatibles. The software is very attractive, mainly because it is powerful and because the producer, Unesco, normally fulfils requests to use it for free. Micro CDS/ISIS is reviewed in this paper which includes recent experience with Version 2.3.

Abstract

Purpose

ABCD is a web‐based open and free software suite for library management derived from the UNESCO CDS/ISIS software technology. The first version was launched officially in December 2009 with a MARC 21 bibliographic format database. This paper aims to detail the building of the UNIMARC bibliographic format database for ABCD.

Design/methodology/approach

ABCD provides tools for building any MARC‐like or structured bibliographic format database; this feature is used to set up a UNIMARC bibliographic format database according to its structure as defined by IFLA. As a member of the ISIS family of software applications, ABCD provides a robust formatting language that allows the output of records according to the needs of the user.

Findings

ABCD provides a robust platform for building a UNIMARC bibliographic format database and many other facilities for editing records. But, it is not yet possible to have more than one active fixed length coded field in a worksheet.

Originality/value

CDS/ISIS users who have data in the UNIMARC format on old versions of CDS/ISIS software applications now have the opportunity to migrate their data into the new application without changing their structure. Aslo, a second international MARC format is provided to new CDS/ISIS users.

Abstract

The CDS/ISIS software for textual data management, distributed by Unesco and now gaining popularity in the Third World and non‐profit organisations, proves to combine enough power and flexibility to serve as a development environment for a public access database of community information full‐text records. This article describes how CDS/ ISIS has been used and adapted to this end and discusses some features of the GIDS‐system, in which a public access interface and an electronic logbook for research on the system's use are most central.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to outline the migration of outdated computerized documentation system/integrated set for information systems (CDS/ISIS) database in to fully functional Web-based Automatización de Bibliotecas y Centros de Documentación (ABCD) integrated library system (ILS), which is derived from the the United Nations educational, scientific and cultural organization (UNESCO) CDS/ISIS software technology.

Design/methodology/approach

The existing integrated set for information systems (ISIS) tags were needed to be remapped as per the tag of MARC-like or structured bibliographic format database by editing integrated set for information systems print formats. Moreover, a sequence of tasks was required to complete the whole process. The major procedures were accomplished as exporting ISIS data into .iso format, creating ABCD database and uploading .iso file into the new database. The next part was configuration and connection with the Web interface after editing PFT.

Findings

CDS/ISIS users who have data in the international organization for standardization format on old versions of CDS/ISIS software applications now have the opportunity to migrate their data into the new application. The detailed process had been outlined not an only successful method of migrating outdated valuable records, also creation of ABCD database.

Originality/value

This paper may help the users of CDS/ISIS or WinISIS to migrate for ABCD and not to expire or give up their valuable data. This is one of the best ways to migrate ISIS data to ABCD with proven functionality. A specific aim of Automatización de Bibliotecas y Centros de Documentación Integrated Library System is to offer a tool for librarians, rather than information communications technology technicians, which is achieved by taking library and information science principles.

Abstract

The following article summarises the results of the LIBACT1/GR project concerning the implementation of UNIMARC and CDS/ISIS in the National Library of Greece and the conversion of the existing records of the Library into the UNIMARC format. The article outlines the basic features of the CDS/ISIS implementation and describes a solution to the problems of implementing UNIMARC on this piece of software. A technique used for the automated UNIMARC formatting of the Library's bibliographic and authority records (from simple ASCII text original files) is also described and evaluated.

Abstract

Purpose

The “advanced loans” module of the relatively new library software, ABCD, is an addition to the normal loans module and it offers a “generic transaction decision‐making engine” funtionality. The module requires extra installation effort and parameterisation, so this article aims to explain to the many potentially interested libraries, especially from the target‐group of ABCD users, why and how to use the module in comparison with the basic loans module.

Design/methodology/approach

After a brief history the technical concepts of the software and the required technical skills to use them are described.

Findings

The article concludes that for libraries with specific conditions (external user registration, high transactional volumes, multi‐policy) the extra burden of installing the software might be worth the effort.

Practical implications

The installation and configuration of the software are briefly described and the possible gains offered by the software are highlighted.

Originality/value

Potential users of the ABCD software will get useful information for helping to decide whether to use the additional advanced loans module.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present empirical research findings regarding the contribution of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), such as computers, to creating and managing digital records in the Ugandan Public Service (UPS). It seeks to review the ICT developments in Uganda and to discuss the extent to which UPS agencies have adopted digital record‐keeping systems, how the management of digital records is incorporated with ICT strategies, and to identify challenges faced.

Design/methodology/approach

A review of the literature on ICT developments in Uganda and empirical studies dealing with management of digital records in the UPS is presented. The review of empirical research findings is based on 23 Government of Uganda (GoU) ministries. Applying both quantitative and qualitative approaches, a survey research design was adopted. Multiple methods of data analysis including coding, tabulation and use of descriptive statements were also used to ascertain the quality of the findings.

Findings

The study revealed that there are attempts to improve ICT capabilities and infrastructure in Uganda but a critical gap exists in the approach since the management of public sector records is not being addressed as part of this initiative. There is no evidence of establishing an ICT infrastructure that will provide the solution to digital records management (DRM) problems. Other weaknesses relate to gaps and poor linkages in the overall Records and Information Technology Department (RITD) itself, as it fails to address the requirement for DRM.

Research limitations/implications

This research looks only at the Uganda Public Service.

Practical implications

The paper provides useful information and data to records and archives management scholars, educators/consultants/researchers and students undertaking studies in management of records, including management of digital records within and outside Uganda.

Originality/value

This subject has never been tackled in this way before for Uganda, and the findings are timely for the ongoing e‐governance initiatives.

Abstract

This paper is a spin off of a keynote address that was delivered by the author at the IFLA‐Africa section workshop on “developing and managing digital libraries” that was held in Gaborone Botswana from 23‐27 February 2004. The author points out that libraries in Sub‐Saharan Africa like their counterparts in the rest of the world are continuing to experience a period of rapid change as they prepare to participate in the global information society. In this endeavour, the libraries face various challenges of economic, technological, content, and information literacy nature. In a global information society, there is need to democratize access to information using ICTs, provide adequate and relevant local content to users and equip them with requisite information literacy skills to efficiently find their way in a maze of information networks. This paper discusses the patterns of ICTs diffusion within libraries in Sub‐Saharan Africa and the implications for the development and management of digital libraries.
