Abstract

Since 2009, different challenge-based learning (CBL) activities have been implemented at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), with a shared objective: provide the students a learning experience that covers the acquisition of technical knowledge, soft skills, and other generic competences, while bringing them closer to the current technologies and industry. The shared background of these activities is the participation of Master's students of aerospace engineering in the preliminary design of a space mission. During the 18/19 academic year, the UPM participated in the 2018 ESA Concurrent Engineering Challenge (ESA CEC), where the students complemented their technical knowledge with dedicated training in Concurrent Engineering and learnt how ESA assesses the feasibility of real space missions. This experience further motivated the organization of the UPM CEC, which was first executed in the 19/20 academic year (and is expected to be carried out in future courses). After a decade implementing CBL, different research methodologies and instruments have been used to evaluate its impact on different aspects of the learning process. In this chapter, we describe the main CBL activities performed, focusing on the instruments used to evaluate them. We draw attention to the main advantages and disadvantages of implementing CBL from a learning perspective, as well as the associated impact in the student's motivation and student–teacher relationship. In many cases, different teaching scenarios are assessed, thus making it possible to compare CBL against traditional methods.

Abstract

In this chapter, we present our findings and ideas regarding the involvement of external partners in challenge-based learning (CBL). In particular, we address two questions: Firstly, whether it is inevitably necessary and/or worthwhile to work with external partners. Secondly, in case external partners are to be included in CBL, what needs to be considered in order to make the cooperation rewarding for teachers and students. Therefore, we identify different roles external partners may assume as well as benefits and problems that can arise from this in terms of the implementation and learning process. Our insights are based on qualitative expert interviews with five teachers and three students from courses with and without external partners at the Hamburg University of Technology (a subsample of our larger quantitative and qualitative study on CBL implementation within the ECIU), our own experience in teaching CBL, as well as on literature reviews. Our findings suggest that roles and functions of external partners are various: They may come into play as a training partner, as a challenge provider, as an expert in the field and/or as a feedback provider. They may take over several roles at the same time or just one out of it; they may be defined as part of the team of learners or join in at special occasions only. While there are certain advantages unique to having external partners, some roles may also be covered without (permanently) involving externals. In any case, working with externals requires continuous communication and negotiation regarding role expectations, positions, and activities throughout the process. To facilitate this, the chapter introduces a model to systematically analyze and balance interactions with external partners.

Abstract

In this opinion article, the authors share their experiences with and perspectives on course design requirements and barriers when applying challenge-based learning (CBL) in an online sustainability education setting. CBL is an established learning approach for (higher) sustainability education. It enables teachers to engage students with open, real-life grand challenges through inter-/transdisciplinary student team collaboration. However, empirical research is scarce and mainly based on face-to-face CBL case studies. Thus far, the opportunities to apply CBL in online educational settings are also underinvestigated.

Using the TPACK framework, the authors address technological, pedagogical and content knowledge related to CBL and online sustainability education. The integration of the different components is discussed, providing teachers and course designers insight into design requirements and barriers.

This paper supports the promising future of online CBL for sustainability education, especially in the context of inter-/national inter-university collaboration, yet emphasizes the need for deliberate use of online collaboration and teaching tools.

Abstract

Purpose

Achieving swift and even flow of cargo through the border, the ultimate objective of cross-border logistics (CBL) requires the close coordination and collaboration of a multitude of stakeholders, as well as optimally configured systems. To achieve and sustain competitiveness in a dynamic international trade environment, CBL processes must undergo periodic analysis, improvement and optimization. This study aims to develop a modelling framework to capture CBL processes for analysis and improvement.

Design/methodology/approach

Relying on the extant literature, a meta-model is developed incorporating significant perspectives required to model CBL processes. Popular process modelling notations are evaluated against the meta-model and their ease of comprehension is also evaluated. The selected notation through evalution is augmented with addendums for a comprehensive depiction of CBL processes.

Findings

The capacity of role activity diagrams (RADs) to depict all perspectives, including interactions in a single diagram, makes them particularly suitable for modelling CBL processes. RADs have been complemented with physical flow diagrams and methods to capture temporal dimension, enabling a comprehensive view of CBL processes laying the foundation for insightful analysis.

Research limitations/implications

The meta-model developed in this paper paves the way to develop an analysis framework which requires further research.

Originality/value

The lack of well-accepted modelling notations for studying CBL processes prompts researchers to search and adapt different formalisms. This study has filled this gap by proposing a comprehensive modelling framework able to capture CBL processes at different granularities in rich detail. Not only does the developed meta-model aid in selecting the notation, it is also useful in analysing the constituent elements of CBL processes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the linkage of case-based instruction with the enhancement of self-regulated learning of employees. Specific objectives are to review and describe: some characteristics of adult learning, features and functions of self-regulated learning (SRL) and the instructional approach, case-based learning (CBL), followed by a synthesis of the information in the form of a detailed, CBL approach for practitioner use.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach used in this work is represented in the following phases. First, conduct a literature review of each of these areas: characteristics of adult learners, details of SRL and its components, accompanied by the expression of linkages among the concepts and CBL. This includes exploration of metacognition, as it relates to the self-regulation of learning. Also reviewed was CBL, including theory background. Literature reviews were aided by databases: Education Research Complete, Psych Info and ScienceDirect. The second substantive phase was to synthesize the information obtained in the reviews and analysis and create a detailed design presentation for using CBL with trainees.

Findings

The findings of the analysis and synthesis of information enable the expression of a complete, detailed approach to the application of CBL for practitioner use. A review of practices in CBL augmented with examination of important theories of situated cognition and constructivism assist in building a rationale as to how case-based instruction may improve individual and team/group self-regulation of learning.

Practical implications

Presented in the paper is a complete model of case-based instruction for practitioner use and refinement.

Originality/value

Case-based instruction has not been directly linked to the self-regulation of learning. This paper makes a contribution to the literature of CBL as well as to situational cognition.

Cupcakes by Lizbeth (CBL) was a “gourmet” cupcake‐focussed retail store chain founded by a married couple. Eight years after opening, CBL used the relatively uncommon process of a “reverse merger” to become publicly traded. At that time, it had seemed as if CBL was on track to be the largest among cupcake focused businesses. However, financial setbacks as reported by the company and change in top management gave reason for pause and closer examination. Did the CBL business model have staying power or did there need to be a serious reconsideration of the company's strategic choices?

Abstract

This paper compares the effectiveness of in‐house developed computer‐based learning (CBL) materials with face‐to‐face teaching. Two groups of higher education students were randomly assigned to complete tutorial work in one highly structured topic of introductory accounting using either CBL materials (treatment group) or face‐to‐face teaching (control group). The effectiveness of both approaches was measured according to the students’ performance in a class test, in relation to their prior accounting knowledge and gender. The results showed that the students with no prior accounting knowledge who completed the CBL materials achieved a significantly higher test mark than the face‐to‐face teaching group. However, there was no significant difference in the marks of the students with prior accounting knowledge, and there was no difference on the basis of gender. The results of this South African study correspond to results in existing literature in other countries, and contribute to the overall knowledge of the effectiveness of CBL materials with respect to prior accounting knowledge and gender.

Abstract

This chapter analyzes the way in which challenge-based learning (CBL) is conceptualized and used in a private university in Puebla, Mexico, to promote social innovation. The university has recently changed its educational model, incorporating more integrative teaching and learning methodologies. The university has considered the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially the first goal to end poverty and the 10th regarding reducing inequality. These goals are relevant because the university is located in the state of Puebla, which has ranked fifth in the country (out of 32) in terms of poverty, especially in rural areas, where 58% of the population is living in poverty or extreme poverty conditions (CONEVAL, 2018). An example of a successful CBL project will be presented, showing how students have worked with their professors, community experts, and other stakeholders. In 2020, the university was recognized by the Times Higher Education World University Ranking as the number one university in Mexico to fight poverty based on the United Nations SDGs because of its CBL activities and social projects. Through these projects, students, administrators, and professors put into practice and develop different skills such as teamwork, analysis, facing new realities, innovating to design solutions to the problems in their environment, and beyond.

Abstract

Challenge-based learning (CBL) is assumed to be particularly relevant in training future teachers, as an active learning approach, centered on the student, based on the resolution of scientific/societal challenges in interdisciplinary teams, with external partners, and over three stages (involving, investigating, and act).

The global aim of the “Form@tive – train future teachers to teach children through CBL” project is to promote active learning based on challenges, integrating different curricular units (CUs) of a course, through CBL. The Form@tive project has concluded the first cycle of implementation in early 2021, in two stages, the first in the context of a Degree in Basic Education in the academic year 2019/2020 and the second stage in three educational professional master's degrees. The results of the monitoring process of the first cycle of implementation state, among other aspects, the need: (1) of better communication between the teachers of the different CUs involved; (2) for the solutions developed to be actually implemented (not implemented due to the pandemic situation); (3) to be provided a more individualized orientation (a dedicated tutor for each group); (4) of less demand on teaching load (overload of tasks requested simultaneously); (5) to be developed not only during a semester but along the academic year; and (6) to also include the Technology and Arts filed, since it could benefit the creation of more innovative and appealing resources and presentations, among others. Recommendations for training future teachers to teach children through CBL are, thus, presented and discussed in this chapter.

Abstract

Challenge-based learning (CBL), the experiential learning and pedagogical approach through which learners (students, instructors, companies, stakeholders, communities) are actively involved in designing a sustainable solution for a real-world problem, is gaining momentum in various higher education institutions around the world. Despite this multiplication of learning initiatives, evaluation in CBL is still an overlooked topic both by scholars and practitioners. Moreover, assessment is closely linked to the teaching and learning process and can also influence the evolution of the challenge because it is directly involved in the feedback, teamwork, and relationship between students, instructors, challenge providers, and stakeholders. Explaining why assessment is so important in CBL is one of the objectives of this chapter. Therefore, in line with the spirit of the handbook, the aim of this chapter is also to inspire, and give suggestions and tools for novel ways of assessing the learning process in CBL.

Through a challenge launched by the University of Trento, involving a local nonprofit integrative health fund, we understood the importance to integrate the formative with the summative assessment, to evaluate not only the final results but also the learning process. We experienced the fundamentals and the difficulties of self-directed learning through which students are called to codesign their learning experience, monitor teamwork, and assess their progress. Support and guidance from instructors are required to be successful in this cultural shift through which teachers are no more traditional professors and students are finally the experts in the challenge.
