Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide efficient methods to calculate the friction coefficients and film thickness ratios in mixed lubrication (ML) regime for water lubricated bearings. Mathematical models consider influence of micro-asperities contacts which is based on the Gauss random distribution.

Design/methodology/approach

Effects of external loads, rotating speeds and radial clearances are obtained. Algorithm shown here is applied to a class of common industrial problems. Calculated Stribeck values are given and evaluated. The calculated and experimental results agree well which proves the correctness of the model.

Findings

In Part I, the authors believe that the paper presents the following for the first time: universal methods are developed for the calculation of friction coefficients and film thickness ratios (lambda) in ML regime; effects of different external loads, rotating speeds and radial clearances on friction coefficients and film thickness ratios are presented in detail; comparisons are made between the results predicted by the model and experimental results, and they agree rather well which proves the correctness of the model.

Originality/value

Present work successfully develops universal methods for predicting the friction coefficients and film thickness ratios.

Abstract

Purpose

Babbitt bush is easy to cause severe adhesive wear due to unexpected journal fall. This paper aims to improve wear resistance of Babbitt bush.

Design/methodology/approach

A soft/hard hybrid surface mircoprofile of Babbitt alloy/steel was fabricated by a technology of laser texture combined with hot-pressing. The friction and wear performances of bare steel (steel-h), Babbitt bush on steel (steel-s) and Babbitt filled in dimples of steel (steel-hs) were conducted on a ball-on-disc tester under dry and lubricated conditions.

Findings

The results showed that wettability of steel-hs was enhanced by forming soft/hard hybrid surface. Compared with steel-s, the stability of friction coefficient curve of steel-hs was improved without increasing coefficient friction. The wear resistance of steel-hs was remarkably enhanced under dry and lubricated conditions.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper is as following: to improve the tribological properties and to prolong service life of steel-s, soft/hard hybrid surface of Babbitt filled in dimples of steel substrate was successfully fabricated by laser texturing combined with hot-pressing. This paper showed that the lipophilicity of steel-hs was best among those of steel-s and steel-h. Babbitt alloy as a soft filler on dimples of steel substrate improved anti-wear of steel-s remarkably. It provides a new way to fabricate Babbitt as bushing on steel substrate.

Abstract

The paper first discusses the question of which objectives may be meaningful for the optimization of high‐voltage insulators, and exhaustively analyses the relationship between field strength and the geometrical properties of the boundary surfaces of a Boundary Value Problem (BVP). Afterwards a theoretical formulation of the optimization task is presented. In order to seek the parameters that may play a role in the optimization task, a formula for the global field derivative for shaping boundaries is derived. The parameters which can be determined by means of the numerical field calculation are discussed. These can be used as a point of reference for the development of an optimization procedure.

Abstract

In 2005, a qualitative study was undertaken to explore the educational events, personal experiences, and job circumstances that a selected group of non-MLS library directors working in small Texas communities believed were significant in contributing to their professional development. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 17 female library directors working in Texas communities with populations of 25,000 or less using open-ended questions, and interviews were recorded and transcribed for later analysis. Four major topic areas relating to the professionalization of non-MLS library directors were identified from the data: (1) job satisfaction, including library work as spiritual salvation, librarianship and the ethic of caring, making a difference in the community, and pride in professional identity; (2) professional development, including hiring narratives, continuing education and lifelong learning, mentoring and professional development, and the importance of the MLS degree; (3) challenges facing small community library directors, including gender-based discrimination, resistance from local governing officials, and geographic isolation; and (4) guidelines for success, including understanding the community, becoming part of the community, making the library the heart of the community, business and managerial skills, and people and customer service skills.

Abstract

Purpose

During the running of automobile, the stabilizer bar is frequently subjected to the impact of complex random loads, which is prone to fatigue failure and accident. In regard to this, the purpose of this paper is to study and discuss fatigue life of automobile stabilizer bar.

Design/methodology/approach

Durability bench test shows that failure is located at the joint of sleeve and stabilizer bar body. Based on the collection and compilation of micro-strain load spectrum of the stabilizer bar, the strain-life model is studied considering the influence of average stress and maximum stress at failure area. Seven-grade strain-life curves of the stabilizer bar are established. According to the principle of linear damage accumulation, the relationship between fatigue life and damage is discussed, then the fatigue life of stabilizer bar is predicted. Fatigue life evaluation is carried out from three aspects: reliability analysis, static analysis and fatigue life simulation.

Findings

The results show that the reliability of the test sample is 99.9 percent when the confidence is 90 percent and the durability is 1,073 load spectrum cycles; the ratios of predicted and simulated life to design life are 2.77 and 2.30, respectively.

Originality/value

Based on the road load characteristics of automobile stabilizer bar, the method of fatigue life prediction and evaluation is discussed, which provides a basis for the design and development of automobile chassis components.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe a parameter identification method based on multiobjective (MO) deterministic and non-deterministic optimization algorithms to compute the temperature distribution on transformer tank covers.

Design/methodology/approach

The strategy for implementing the parameter identification process consists of three main steps. The first step is to define the most appropriate objective function and the identification problem is solved for the chosen parameters using single-objective (SO) optimization algorithms. Then sensitivity to measurement error of the computational model is assessed and finally it is included as an additional objective function, making the identification problem a MO one.

Findings

Computations with identified/optimal parameters yield accurate results for a wide range of current values and different conductor arrangements. From the numerical solution of the temperature field, decisions on dimensions and materials can be taken to avoid overheating on transformer covers.

Research limitations/implications

The accuracy of the model depends on its parameters, such as heat exchange coefficients and material properties, which are difficult to determine from formulae or from the literature. Thus the goal of the presented technique is to achieve the best possible agreement between measured and numerically calculated temperature values.

Originality/value

Differing from previous works found in the literature, sensitivity to measurement error is considered in the parameter identification technique as an additional objective function. Thus, solutions less sensitive to measurement errors at the expenses of a degradation in accuracy are identified by means of MO optimization algorithms.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to theoretically and experimentally investigate vibratory peg-bush alignment using elastic vibrations of the peg, when the peg is axially excited by a pressed piezoelectric vibrator on the upper end.

Design/methodology/approach

Experimental research of part alignment using elastic vibrations was performed and dependencies of alignment duration on excitation signal parameters and initial pressing force were defined for rectangular and circular cross-section parts. Mathematical model of two-mass dynamic systems with elastic contact model representing alignment process was created. Dependencies of system parameters on the alignment duration were obtained by numerically solving systems differential equations.

Findings

Theoretical and experimental investigation approved the usage of elastic vibrations for alignment of chamferless circular and rectangular cross-section parts. This novel method of part alignment compensates axial misalignment between mating parts by directional displacement of movably based bush.

Research limitations/implications

Impact and non-impact interaction between bush and peg is possible; however, only non-impact regime was investigated. Static and dynamic coefficients of friction between the parts are equivalent and do not depend on relative velocity of parts.

Practical implications

The results are useful in designing reliable and effective assembly equipment with vibratory assistance alignment for peg-bush operations, which do not require auxiliary sensors and feedback systems. Use of a piezoelectric resonator for peg excitation makes this system easily adaptable to the existing automated assembly equipment.

Originality/value

The proposed method is a new approach to vibratory alignment. The data obtained during investigation expand the insight of the physical processes that drive bush to the axial alignment direction.
