Abstract

This article investigates concentration, efficiency, and profitability of commercial banks operating in Saudi Arabia, which is considering acceding to the World Trade Organisation whose rules on financial services liberalisation could pose a competitive challenge to local banks. We use regression analysis to investigate the underlying determinants of Saudi bank concentration, efficiency, and profitability. The significance of the study stems from the conventional premise that highly concentrated banking or credit market introduces inefficiencies that would harm firms’ access to credit thus hindering economic growth. If banks were found to be highly concentrated and hence inefficient, then the relevant policy question that should be addressed by Saudi Arabian policy makers is what should be done to alleviate the situation. Empirical results show that Saudi banking market is highly concentrated, and healthy competition through the Saudi adoption of corrective measures would ease the problem. The Saudi government may like to consider concurrently joining the WTO, and allow non‐banking institutions to enter into brokerage business, offer financial products and services (investment banking, brokerage, and portfolio management), and compete with commercial banks through fair participation in auctioning of government securities.

Abstract

In recent years Lehman Brothers, one of the five largest investment banks in the United States, had grown increasingly reliant on its fixed income trading and underwriting division, which served as the primary engine for its strong profit growth. The bank had also significantly increased its leverage over the same timeframe, going from a debt-to-equity ratio of 23.7x in 2003 to 35.2x in 2007. As leverage increased, the ongoing erosion of the mortgage-backed industry began to impact Lehman significantly and its stock price plummeted. Unfortunately, public outcry over taxpayer assumption of $29 billion in potential Bear losses made repeating such a move politically untenable. The surreal scene of potential buyers traipsing into an investment bank's headquarters over the weekend to consider various merger or spin-out scenarios repeated itself once again. This time, the Fed refused to back the failing bank's liabilities, attempting instead to play last-minute suitors Bank of America, HSBC, Nomura Securities, and Barclay's off each other, jawboning them by arguing that failing to step up to save Lehman would cause devastating counterparty runs on their own capital positions. The Fed's desperate attempts to arrange its second rescue of a major U.S. investment bank in six months failed when it refused to backstop losses from Lehman's toxic mortgage holdings. Complicating matters was Lehman's reliance on short-term repo loans to finance its balance sheet. Unfortunately, such loans required constant renewal by counterparties, who had grown increasingly nervous that Lehman would lose the ability to make good on its trades. With this sentiment swirling around Wall Street, Lehman was forced to announce the largest Chapter 11 filing in U.S. history, listing assets of $639 billion and liabilities of $768 billion. The second domino had fallen. It would not be the last.

This case covers the period from the sale of Bear Stearns to JP Morgan to the conversion into bank holding companies by Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, including the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy and the sale of Merrill Lynch to Bank of America. The case explains the new global paradigm for the investment banking industry, including increased regulation, fewer competitors, lower leverage, reduced proprietary trading, and-potentially-reduced profits.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the attributes that predict customer attrition behavior in the brokerage and investment banking sectors.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors analyze the complete stock trading records and customer profiles of 458,098 retail customers from a Korean brokerage house. The authors develop customer attrition prediction models and further explore the practicality of these models using statistical classification techniques.

Findings

The results from three different binary selection models indicate that customer transaction patterns effectively explain the attrition of active retail customers in subsequent periods. The study results demonstrate that monetary value variables are the most critical for predicting customer attrition in the securities industry.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the customer attrition literature by documenting the first large-scale field-based evidence that confirms the practicality of the canonical recency, frequency and monetary (RFM) framework in the investment banking and brokerage industry. The findings advance previous survey-based studies in the financial services industry by identifying the attributes that predict customer attrition behaviors in the securities industry.

Practical implications

The outcomes can be easily operationalized for attrition prediction by practitioners in financial service firms. Moreover, the ex post density of inactive customers in the top 10 percent most-likely-to-churn group is estimated to be five to six times the ex ante unconditional attrition ratio, which ascertains that the attributes recognized in this study work well for the purpose of target marketing.

Originality/value

While the securities industry is regarded as one of the most information-intensive industries, detailed empirical investigation into customer attrition in the field has lagged behind partly due to the lack of suitable securities transaction data and demographic information at the customer level. The current research fills this gap in the literature by taking advantage of a large-scale field data set and offers a starting point for more elaborate studies on the drivers of customer attrition in the financial services sector.

Abstract

Attempts to assess the performance of five selected private banking institutions in the Philippines in order to determine how these perform at their vital functions, and to what extent they implement their savings consciousness programme, marketing campaign programme, technological innovation and outreach programmes. Findings reveal that all the banking functions perform well except for insurance. Suggests the banks are implementing the programmes as a gesture of sensitivity to the needs of their customers. Discusses how they use a variety of marketing tools such as posters, brochures, leaflets, product kits and media exposure through broadcast and print media, which are considered by the research as the most effective means of promoting the bank’s products and services.

Expected learning outcomes: To respond to the case question, students would analyze macro- and microeconomic differences to determine HC Securities’ preferred global strategy and appropriate market entry mode. The case demonstrates how instability in a local market, in this case Egypt, can force a company to go global. It also demonstrates how two superficially similar markets, Singapore and Hong Kong, provide different opportunities for HC Securities and require different global strategies: Singapore provides a jumping-off point to its predominantly Muslim neighbors Malaysia and Indonesia, whereas Hong Kong gives access to China and could provide a new customer base of Asian investors willing to invest in Africa and the Middle East.

Case overview/synopsis

Brief overview of the case: The case introduces the Egyptian investment company HC Securities, which is facing challenges related to Egypt’s political instability and economic slowdown. HC Securities’ CEO, Mr. Choucri, feels expansion to one of the Asia-Pacific countries could help with the company’s growth and stability. He identifies Hong Kong and Singapore as the most compelling locations because of their sophisticated economies and growth potential in the investments industry. Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to bring the attention of Muslim world toward uniformity of Shariah principles. The paper also presents different opinions of experts toward standardization. Selection criteria of four different Islamic market indices are compared. Some points like Halal business and debt ratio are common, while others are different.

Design/methodology/approach

The qualitative research method has been used in this research work and various types of documents and research articles were analyzed. The authors analyzed the data of four Islamic stock markets in the world. First, they write all the screening criteria of every Islamic stock market for selecting a company for their stock market. Afterwards, they make a table that presents the comparison of screening criteria of all Islamic market indices.

Findings

A Shariah Board of Islamic Market approves any company as being Islamic Shariah-compliant based on certain criteria. Different Islamic market indices use their own criteria for selecting the company. Every Islamic market index has its own rules and regulations of the Shariah Board. Sometimes these rules are contradictory with each other; for example, if KMI-30 Islamic index is not selecting one particular company due to higher debt ratio but Dow Jones Islamic market index selects that company because that company meets the criteria of the Dow Jones Islamic market index.

Research limitations/implications

The main limitation is that there is no approach to regulators of the different Islamic market indices around the globe.

Practical implications

If Islamic indices work on the suggestions provided in this paper, standardized criteria will be available to all indices and, consequently, confidence of the investors and operational issues will be resolved. Investment will be increased.

Social implications

The belief of non-Muslims will be strong that Islamic laws are the same any where. A shift from conventional finance to Islamic Finance will be sped up.

Originality/value

This research work is original and first attempt on the topic of standardization of screening criteria of Islamic stock markets around the globe.
