Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relations between people development management (PDM) as independent variable and knowledge management (KM) as dependent variable, in some Iranian healthcare centers. Design/methodology/approach – Applying the structural equation model (SEM) approach. Investigating causal relations of the variables through Lisrel software. Findings – Findings show that in the researched organizations there is a significant positive relation between PDM and its components, and KM. PDM have direct significant effect (0.85) on KM. The relation between the factor titled as “learning needs analysis and induction”, and KM is fairly more important than the other factors. Research limitations/implications – More research needs to be done in the same areas to judge about the effect of human assets strategies on KM. In case of the surveyed organization, it seems there is a vital need to review the PDM and KM strategies and develop some procedures to improve and keep the business up. Practical implications – Although the proposed model has proved no causal relation between PDM components and KM, except in the case of “learning needs analysis and induction”, it does not mean that no correction action is needed in other dimensions. In other words, it is necessary to expand a well‐developed people development management project to meet a successful knowledge management. Originality/value – Our conceptual model of research has two dimensions. In one side we chose Newman's model of knowledge management, On the other side we consider a comprehensive pattern of people development management, named People Developer Standard. Through this model an appropriate framework to manage and develop the human assets and a series of developer activities will be formed to achieve people excellence.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on the dynamic capability view, this study aims to examine the relationships between big data analytics capability (BDAC) and sustainable supply chain performance (SSCP) by exploring the mediating effects of knowledge development (KD) in terms of knowledge acquisition, information distribution, shared meaning and achieved memory.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected by questionnaire survey from 300 manufacturing organizations. Structural equation modeling was used to test the research hypotheses.

Findings

It was found that all the dimensions of KD were positively related to BDAC and SSCP. Although no direct association was established between BDAC and SSCP, the empirical findings indicated that all the dimensions of KD fully mediated the relationship between BDAC and SSCP. This highlights that organizations need to harness KD because developing BDAC alone may not be sufficient.

Originality/value

No previous research has explored how KD dimensions such as knowledge acquisition, information distribution, shared meaning and achieved memory mediate the relationship between BDAC and SSCP. This paper addresses this gap in the literature and contributes to the existing debate to better understand the conditions in which BDAC affects SSCP. Pointers for future research are also identified.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to build upon the debate in the service quality literature regarding both the theoretical and practical effectiveness of expectations data in the measurement of internal service quality (ISQ). Gap‐based and perceptions‐only approaches to measuring ISQ are tested and their respective benefits and limitations evaluated.

Design/methodology/approach

The internal service context used in this study is the provision of e‐procurement software, training, and user support in four organisations. The two approaches are evaluated in terms of reliability and validity, as well as pragmatic aspects of survey administration.

Findings

The various tests carried out indicate that both the gap‐measure and perceptions‐only measure are reliable and valid, the latter being the marginally higher performer. Both approaches were found to have benefits and limitations, and so the empirical study, combined with contributions from the literature, generates some understanding of the internal service context in which the two approaches might be appropriate.

Research limitations/implications

The survey was based on an internal e‐procurement service; as such, the variables and dimensions selected to measure ISQ in this context inevitably limit the scope of the research.

Practical implications

For operations managers, the paper clarifies the basis on which they might choose between the two approaches to ISQ measurement.

Originality/value

This study is the first to directly test and compare the relative merits of these two approaches to ISQ measurement. The paper also offers insights as to the operational contexts in which each approach might be appropriate.

Describes two international development education projects in the context of requirements for project success and in terms of a project design model developed by the authors. Abstract

This paper looks at the importance of forecasted information as a key input to investors decision models. The research design uses accounting variables suggested by financial accounting theory, industry variables and economic variables. Analysis of the data indicated that only return on investment yield and capital intensity were associated with earnings. In an environment of rapidly changing economic conditions and attendant uncertainty, the scrutiny of forecast accuracy has is crucial. For a firm, the allocation of resources is based upon forecasts of financial information that may affect its survival. Earnings and dividends forecast, and the growth rates in these forecast are key informational inputs in investor decision models (Chang and Most, 1980). In addition, Securities and Exchange Commission, recognizing the importance of this subjective and non‐verifiable information, permits and encourages firms to include financial forecasts in their annual reports by granting them a “safe harbor”. The accounting profession responded to this demand for forecasted information by producing audit guidelines for these forecasts. Accounting‐based financial forecasts are used in a variety of ways. Banks and non bank financial institutions use forecasts to evaluate credit. Earnings forecasts are useful to financial analysts who attempt to isolate a firm's intrinsic characteristics such as residual income after removing the effect of economy and industry conditions through the use of index models. Auditors use accounting forecasts as a basis for expectations concerning reported items to determine the extent of detailed tests (Stringer, 1975; Kinney, 1978). Lev (1980, p.525) stated that the “… crucial stage of the analytical review process is the generation of expected, or reasonable, values of financial statement items.” Managers use internally generated earnings forecasts for resource allocation decisions concerning present operations as well as future operations and expansions/contractions.

Abstract

‘Collaboration’ and ‘team’ are terms commonly used in literature related to the provision of health care, including rehabilitation. However, the complexity of the phenomena represented by these terms is often overlooked. ‘Collaboration’ is rarely defined, and ‘teams’ are often presented as easily identifiable and stable entities. Simplistic use of these terms often results in different aspects of interprofessional practice being researched and discussed without reference to the ‘messiness’ (the ambiguities and complexities) surrounding professional practice. As a consequence, health professionals may have difficulties in understanding the relevance of such research to their particular situations. This paper explores the complexities of the phenomenon of collaboration and the concept of team, with the aim of highlighting the benefits of researchers embracing rather than simplifying these phenomena. The paper reports on emerging models in action, which is one part of a wider research project exploring collaboration within rehabilitation teams. The research approach was informed by hermeneutic phenomenology. Insights gained through this project led to the development of two models: the first conceptualising collaboration in relation to domains of process, product and players; the other model proposing the notion of collaborative arenas. The model of collaborative arenas recognises the blurred boundaries and interrelated team memberships that occur in rehabilitation teams. Both models informed ongoing data collection and analysis for this research project and have potential to inform conceptualisation of teams and collaboration for other researchers.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to respond to the high cost of facility management-enabled building information model (FM-BIM) creation and maintenance, a significant and under-researched barrier to adoption for existing buildings. The resultant approach focuses on only value-adding content (“Lean”) developed flexibly and iteratively in collaboration with end-users (“Agile”).

Design/methodology/approach

Five case studies were developed for university and hospital buildings in collaboration with end-users, guided by the process presented. These informed the refinement of a robust and flexible approach to increase BIM functionality with minimal geometry, focusing instead on the development of specific parameters to map semantic information necessary for each desired FM use.

Findings

The resulting BIM provided a breadth of model functionality with minimal modeling effort: 15 hours average implementation time per supported FM use. This low level of effort was achieved by limiting geometry to where it is necessary for the FM use implementation. Instead, the model incorporated the majority of geometry by reference and focused on semantic and topological parameters to house FM information.

Research limitations/implications

This study provides the basis for a new ontology structure focused on defining the rules for hosting asset management data (host entity, parameter type and characteristics) to reduce the reliance on complex geometric model development.

Practical implications

By prioritizing highly beneficial applications, early investment is minimized, providing quick returns at low risk, demonstrating the value of FM-BIM to end-users.

Originality/value

The Lean-Agile approach addresses the known research gap of low-effort, flexible approaches to FM-BIM model creation and maintenance and its effectiveness is analyzed through five case studies.

Abstract

This paper examines bread wheat quality and its effect on vertical co‐ordination in the wheat supply chain. Wheat quality is defined by many different characteristics, which poses limitations on the effectiveness of industry grading schemes in meeting the quality needs of end‐users. Consequently, individual processors may have an incentive to segregate wheat based on their own quality specifications. The costs and benefits of wheat segregation are analysed using a simple economic model, and illustrated with a case study of supply chain management taken from the UK bread industry. Warburtons Ltd procures bread wheat varieties with specific intrinsic quality attributes from Canada using identity preserved supply contracts. The paper concludes that the benefits of wheat quality control will encourage millers and bakers to develop closer vertical linkages with wheat suppliers in the future.

The prevalence, correlates (child behaviour problems and negative parenting) and determinants (risk and protective factors) of parental need for support were examined in a community sample of 177 mothers with a child aged 1.5‐3.5 years, in order to draw a profile of families that need parenting support. A substantial number of the mothers reported needing support (40% reported need for information, 10% reported family and social support needs). This need was related to child behaviour problems and to negative parenting. Maternal depression, difficult temperament of the child and negative life events, as well as total number of risk factors, significantly predicted the need for support. Satisfaction with support (but not number of support sources) acted as a protective factor.

Abstract

This article is an extended version of an ‘experts’ briefing' commissioned to inform senior child welfare managers in English local authorities and voluntary agencies about the available evidence to inform the provision of effective services in complex child protection cases. It starts by noting how differences in the approach to service provision in different jurisdictions affect both the nature of research conducted and its transferability across national boundaries. It then summarises the characteristics both of parents who are likely to maltreat their children and also of the children most likely to be maltreated. The factors that make some families ‘hard to engage’ or ‘hard to help/change’ are then discussed, as are the essential elements of effective professional practice in child protection. Particular attention is paid to effective approaches to helping families and young people who are hard to identify or engage.
