Abstract

Purpose

Knowledge of brand awareness and its role is important for the design of an organisation's marketing strategies. This study aims to determine the brand awareness of high‐ and low‐involvement products among Black and non‐Black students enrolled at a South African university.

Design/methodology/approach

A self‐administered survey was completed by a convenience sample of 300 students of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The focal high‐involvement product was sportswear clothing and the low‐involvement product, coffee.

Findings

The results indicated a higher awareness of high‐involvement product brands than of low‐involvement product brands. Advertising played an important role in the awareness of sportswear clothing brands, but seemed unimportant in the case of coffee. The brand name was important for coffee, while the name and the logo played a role in students' awareness of sportswear brands.

Research limitations/implications

This study was limited to students of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and to sportswear clothing and coffee product categories. Future studies could comprise larger samples, different contexts and other product or service categories.

Practical implications

The findings suggest that marketers employ different strategies to create and increase brand awareness for high‐ and low‐involvement products.

Originality/value

Previous research found that brand awareness played an important role in low‐involvement products; however, little is known about brand awareness differences between high‐ and low‐involvement products, particularly with respect to the brand awareness of South African students.

Abstract

It is generally recognised that companies spend approximately 50% of their marketing budget on promotional activities. Advertising belongs to the most visible areas of a company’s activity. Therefore, it should not be surprising that the average recipient associates marketing with advertising, competitions and leaflets about new promotions delivered to houses or offices. Advertising, especially Internet advertising, is one of the most effective forms of marketing and one of the fastest developing areas of business. New channels of communication are emerging all the time – the Internet, digital television, mobile telephony; accompanied by new forms, such as the so-called ambient media. Advertising benefits from the achievements of many fields of science, that is, psychology, sociology, statistics, medicine and economics. At the same time, it combines science and the arts – it requires both knowledge and intuition. Contemporary advertising has different forms and areas of activity; yet it is always closely linked with the operations of a company – it is a form of marketing communication.

The indices of marketing communication presented in this chapter are generally known and used not only by advertising agencies but also by the marketing departments of many organisations. Brand awareness, advertising scope and frequency, the penetration index or the response rate belong to the most widely used indices; others, like the conversion rate or the affinity index, will get increasingly more significant along with the process of professionalisation of the environment of marketing specialists in Poland and with increased pressure on measuring marketing activities. Marketing indices are used for not only planning activities, but also their evaluation; some of them, such as telemarketing, mailing and coupons, provide an extensive array of possibilities of performance evaluation.

Abstract

Purpose

Service branding research predominantly focuses on the purchase and postpurchase stages of the customer journey. This study aims to expand the lens of enquiry to the prepurchase stage, showing the role service brand awareness and service brand retrieval play before customer experiences and relationships can be established.

Design/methodology/approach

The research presents and empirically examines a new framework that links service brand awareness and service brand retrieval to key “battlegrounds” in the prepurchase stage of the customer journey: entry into the Awareness Set, Consideration Set and Repertoire Set. The empirical work draws on data from both services and goods markets from two UK-based consumer surveys (N = 771 and N = 270, respectively).

Findings

The findings indicate that, prepurchase, service brands compete most intensively to establish and reinforce a broad array of memory associations, rather than a specific corporate or brand image.

Research limitations/implications

To improve the generalizability of the conclusions drawn, the findings of this study should be replicated in additional service categories and consumer samples.

Practical implications

The findings translate into novel, long-term strategies for the management of service brands at the prepurchase stage of the customer journey, especially opportunities for effective and creative marketing communications.

Originality/value

This study contributes to marketing research and practice by introducing the notion of service brand retrieval and highlighting its role, together with service brand awareness and prepurchase.

Abstract

Purpose

The banking industry in Bangladesh is now conducting business under the growing pressure to conform to every aspect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) for the welfare of their clients and society. The value of CSR practices is attributed to the relationship between corporate image, brand awareness, brand equity (BE), competitive advantage and financial result. The purpose of this paper is to measure the impact of CSR on BE and to establish the moderating impact of corporate image and brand awareness.

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed hypotheses using a sample of 200 public and private bank customers in Bangladesh.

Findings

The results of this study demonstrated that CSR has a significant direct effect on the corporate image, brand awareness and BE. The results also confirm that corporate image and brand awareness partially mediate the relationship between CSR and BE.

Practical implications

The findings indicate that successfully CSR practices will enhance a bank’s image in the mind of customers. Customers will feel that they are contributing to social causes because they are receiving services from socially responsible organizations. CSR practices also create customer awareness regarding the financial services provided by a bank. Consequently, good reputation and brand awareness contribute to building strong BE for banks.

Originality/value

This research shows the mediating role of brand awareness and corporate image with CSR and BE in the context of the banking industry in Bangladesh which is rarely studied. Therefore, the findings of this study will add value to the existing literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Brand awareness is a pivotal, but often neglected, aspect of consumer-based brand equity. This paper revisits brand awareness measures in the context of global brand management.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on the method of Laurent et al. (1995), this cross-sectional longitudinal study examines changes in brand awareness over time, with sample sizes of approximately 300 whisky consumers per wave in three countries: United Kingdom, Taiwan and Greece.

Findings

There is consistency in the underlying structure of awareness scores across countries, and over time, extending the work of Laurent et al. (1995). Results show that a relevant operationalisation of brand awareness needs to account for the history of the brand. Furthermore, the nature of the variation of brand awareness over time interacts with a brand’s market share.

Research limitations/implications

When modelling the impact of brand awareness researchers need to consider two factors – the brand’s market share and whether a more stable or volatile measure is sought. This avoids mis-specifying the country-level contribution of brand awareness.

Practical implications

Global brand managers should be wary of adopting a “one size fits all” approach. The choice of brand awareness measure depends on the brand’s market share, and the desire for higher sensitivity or stability.

Originality/value

The paper provides one of the few multi-country investigations into brand awareness that can help inform global brand management.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between product knowledge and product involvement with purchase decision-making. In addition, this study also determines the role of halal brand awareness as a moderating variable in influencing the relationship between product knowledge and product involvement with purchase decision-making.

Design/methodology/approach

Five major cities in Indonesia were chosen as study locations because they are student cities, and also cities with more population and more famous in Indonesia, so the sample is more heterogeneous. A total of 500 questionnaires were distributed using a convenience sampling method with an effective rate of 93%. Hypotheses are tested by structural equation modeling procedures using analysis of moment structure 22.0.

Findings

The empirical results suggest that product knowledge and product involvement have a positive and significant effect on consumer purchase decision-making; halal brand awareness is a moderating variable in the relationship between product knowledge and product involvement with purchase decision-making.

Research limitations/implications

This study adopts convenience sampling with the sampling area restricted in five cities, so it may not be suitable to be concluded as a consumer in general. This study only conducts research on halal food products in general. Future research may choose to use one brand of halal food product or compare several other halal food product brands. The results of the study support that the heterogeneity of respondents (age, education, gender and religion) has always been an important component in the study of consumption behavior. So that future research can examine the effect of different characteristics of respondents on the relationship between product knowledge, product involvement, halal brand awareness and purchase decisions.

Practical implications

The findings have significant implications that can help producers to develop strategies suitable for halal brand awareness and heighten the decision to purchase halal products by consumers in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries. So that the branding of halal products can enable businesses to access new markets for non-Muslim consumers in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries, so as to increase producer profitability by selling products at higher prices thereby providing higher profit margins.

Originality/value

In accordance with the author’s knowledge, this study is the first study to examine the moderator role of halal brand awareness variables in the relationship of product knowledge and product involvement with purchase decision-making.

Abstract

Purpose

Brand awareness is a key cognitive metric and a vital component of consumer-based brand equity. Generating and maintaining brand awareness has been an important metric for brands and a significant outcome of advertising and promotional activities. Brand awareness has been studied over the years in the context of market share and mind share and is considered to be the fundamental starting point of a brand relationship. Most branding variables are challenged in their linear definitions by the multi-dimensionality of the connected online world. Consumers may start their brand journey with brand awareness and then proceed to explore higher options in a non-linear fashion. This challenges traditional advertising and brand salience models. In the web context, brand awareness could even happen with little prior cognitive processing. The purpose of this paper is to explore the little researched area of brand awareness in the context of Indian websites.

Design/methodology/approach

The study leveraged technology to study the brand discovery behaviour of real estate website users in India. The authors looked at essentially modified processes such as the brand experience journey, specifically, the sources and antecedents of brand awareness for real estate websites. Considering the fact that direct and indirect traffic to a website is indicative of the brand awareness metrics, the authors analyse the metric as a basis of the comparison.

Findings

Brand awareness in the digital world can be attributed as firm generated, user generated and, as the authors also discover, experience initiated. The altered dimensions have a profound impact on the brand advertising spends of not just digital brands, but all marketers who will find digital technology increasingly central to their brand communication efforts.

Research limitations/implications

Burgeoning websites and media proliferation have increased the source set for website discovery. Customers do not rely solely on advertising or chance encounter to discover a new brand. Usage of search engines remains the key point of discovery for brand awareness. Some of the respondents recognised websites from prior advertising exposure and selected the brand from the consideration set offered in the search results for their keyword search. In other cases, brand awareness followed brand experience as the users did not process the brand information or, in most cases, were not aware of the brand name prior to website visit. The quality of brand experience created brand awareness and had further implications, including brand visit intent.

Practical implications

While mass media television advertising and ubiquitous online advertising can build brand awareness, the impact of search engine advertising and search engine optimisation is equally significant, if not more important. Brand managers can additionally focus on branding on the search channel in the light of increasing search intensity. Beyond traditional keyword planning, this can be an enhanced branding platform for reaching out to specific behavioural or character traits of the target audience. Brand experience can mature from task completion to brand awareness and higher level values if the website includes key brand messages and goals.

Originality/value

This paper offers insight into the little known field of online brand management. Information intermediary websites are unique in their value proposition, and brand building is challenging. Real estate websites have grown in popularity, but have not merited researcher attention. This paper offers a unique perspective on branding websites, specifically in the context of emerging markets like India.

Abstract

Purpose

The role of social media in the tourism industry growth cannot be ignored, because today the internet and social media platforms are one of the most popular information channels used by potential tourists and have become one of the main sources of online travel information. This study investigates the role of content cues of tourism information quality provided in Elie Gasht firm's Instagram page on enhancing awareness of the destination brand and forming users' destination image.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative research design was used to validate the hypotheses proposed in this research. A survey was deployed using the convenience method among 187 users of Elie Gesht's Instagram page to test the theoretical model. The structural relationships in the research were examined using the partial least squares structural equation modeling.

Findings

The findings of the present research indicated that the content cues of the quality of information provided by the firm have a positive effect on enhancing destination brand awareness and in turn improve affective image and cognitive image. Eventually, the content cues of the quality of information provided by the firm impact the formation of a conative image through the affective and cognitive image of the destination.

Practical implications

Pragmatically, the findings of this study urge policymakers of tourism companies, managers and destination marketers to take into account the special role of the firm's social media in enhancing destination brand awareness, which in turn promotes destination brand image. Therefore, providing empirical evidence on what leads to the promotion of destination brand awareness and different types of image formation of the destination due to information content quality provided by the firm on social media, provides managerial insights for corporate marketers and tourism destinations.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the body of knowledge on the role of quality of tourism information content presented in the firm's social media by providing empirical evidence on enhancing destination brand awareness and destination image formation. It also helps firm managers and planners build their marketing strategies to attract more customers through social media.

Abstract

Most aspects of brand loyalty rely heavily on brand awareness. However, the information processing of brand awareness in customers, which is significant in buying decisions or customers' feedback experiences, is still unknown in the available literature. This study investigates how dynamic brands awareness affect customers in buying what they buy and how they buy them. The current study's entire goal is to comprehend the phenomenon of customer preferences and choices in the Nigerian context. The study asserts that there is a need to provide critical information that will improve customers' hypotheses testing in making a choice and preferences in creating brand awareness. It is necessary for brand builders and marketers to achieve and maintain the ultimate level of awareness through great gift items, pricing tactics, sales promotion, and sponsorship of programmes and events creatively and consistently. Meaningful customer relationship management programmes and activities must be established to constantly improve brand awareness.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the relationship between emotional bonding (e.g. brand love, brand commitment and brand trust) and consumers’ awareness and consumers loyalty to conventional and Islamic banking products in Indonesia.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample consists of 585 Muslim and bank consumers obtained through a survey study and using structural equation modeling to test the research hypotheses.

Findings

The empirical results indicate that brand love, commitment and trust have significant and positive effects on consumers’ awareness and loyalty. Furthermore, as the mediator variables, consumers’ awareness partially mediates the relationship between emotional bonding and consumers’ loyalty.

Research limitations/implications

This study was validated by Indonesian Muslims; therefore, future study is needed to validate across the region and sector.

Practical implications

This study enlightened the bank managers from a marketing and psychological context. The bank managers need to enhance the control and promote their brand and products to improve their relationship and consumers.

Originality/value

This study provided the Muslim consumers' decision-making process by developing and testing a model of emotional bonding and consumers’ perspective toward bank products.
