Abstract
Purpose
In the Fall semester of 2001, a new position – Bioinformatics Librarian – was developed jointly by the University of Florida's Health Science Center Libraries (HSCL) and Genetics Institute (UFGI). Aims to give an overview of this post.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper describes the development of the position and the services provided.
Findings
Funded by the Genetics Institute and housed in the library, this position was created to meet the information needs of the university's faculty, students and staff involved in genetics and bioinformatics research and study. The responsibilities of the position were in part patterned after those performed via the HSCL's existing Liaison Librarian program. Librarians with only an undergraduate degree in the biosciences can still make an important, albeit usually less complete, contribution in this area.
Originality/value
The University of Florida's Bioinformatics Librarian position may serve as a model for the Information Specialist in Context (ISIC; Informationist; Bioinformationist) in the research arena.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present the design and implementation of a blended problem-based learning (PBL) teaching model and corresponding teaching materials for a university-level bioinformatics course. The effects of this teaching model on student performance in terms of problem solving and learning attitudes were investigated.
Design/methodology/approach
Students in both groups completed assessments of problem-solving attitudes and learning attitudes both one week both before and after experimental instruction. Collected data were analyzed using one-way ANCOVA. Group discussions and student interviews were recorded and treated as part of the data analysis.
Findings
The study produced the following findings: the experimental group was found to perform better than the control group in terms of learning attitudes, but the results were not statistically significant; the experimental group was found to outperform the control group in terms of problem-solving attitudes, and the difference was statistically significant; lesson plan contents need to be designed based on problem-based learning theory, and reflect real-world conditions; participants in the experimental group approved of the blended PBL and group discussion approach.
Originality/value
Results are expected to provide a useful reference for educators and researchers. These findings can be applied to relevant instructional fields to enhance learner motivation and engagement, thus improving learning outcomes.

Abstract
Partnerships between universities and secondary schools are highly valued for a range of pedagogical, transition and outreach benefits to students, teachers and more broadly, society. Teachers in schools provide a rich insight into how university teaching staff can better engage students and provide them with deeper learning experiences. Universities can provide on-campus student incursions for learning activities, work experience opportunities, research projects with academics and lectures by specialist researchers. This chapter describes the range of benefits arising from a partnership, established in 2009, between the John Monash Science School (JMSS) and Monash University, co-located in outer suburban of Melbourne, Australia. The JMSS–Monash partnership has generated a number of innovative and dynamic educational programmes, which have positively impacted the learning and engagement of students across geographic divides. The partnership is rich, and has broadened and deepened as the partners have learned more about each other’s capacities, and envisioned what is possible in an educational landscape bereft of innovation and challenge to existing norms. By thinking creatively and acting bravely, the partners have shone a light on a brighter future in science for Australian students.

Purpose
Data mining has been a popular research area in the past decades. Many researchers study data-mining theories, methods, applications and trends; however, there are very few studies on data-mining-related topics in social media. This paper aims to explore the topics related to data mining based on the data collected from Wikipedia.
Design/methodology/approach
In total, 402 data-mining-related articles were obtained from Wikipedia. These articles were manually classified into several categories by the coding method. Each category formed an article-term matrix. These matrices were analysed and visualized by the self-organizing map approach. Several clusters were observed in each category. Finally, the topics of these clusters were extracted by content analysis.
Findings
The articles obtained were classified into six categories: applications, foundation and concepts, methodologies, organizations, related fields and topics and technology support. Business, biology and security were the three prominent topics of the applications category. The technologies supporting data mining were software, systems, databases, programming languages and so forth. The general public was more interested in data-mining organizations than the researchers. They also focused on the applications of data mining in business more than in other fields.
Originality/value
This study will help researchers gain insight into the general public’s perceptions of data mining and discover the gap between the general public and themselves. It will assist researchers in finding new techniques and methods which will potentially provide them with new data-mining methods and research topics.

Abstract
Purpose
Many countries around the world were compelled to adhere to rigorous practices of school closures due to the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). During the lockdown period, distance teaching and learning have become the only form to keep students on track. Reports have revealed that during this period, parents and students have strived hard to cope up with the learning method, which is new to the school education system in Sri Lanka. Against this background, this study explored the perceptions of parents in distance learning and homeschooling of their children during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka. In addition, this study also attempted to assess the success of such educational practices in the country during the pandemic.
Design/methodology/approach
A quantitative research approach was used, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed via Google Forms to a sample of 587 respondents through snowball sampling across Sri Lanka.
Findings
According to the collected data, about 52% of participants positively responded to the current distance learning practices adopted in school education. Meanwhile, about 57% of parents were negatively concerned about current practices. The respondents had negative concerns about the new role of teaching at home, difficulties in balancing work-from-home activities, too many distractions and unfamiliarity with the teaching methods and the subjects. Further with regard to depression, the majority of respondents have moderate depression which could be led to not favouring or being active in teaching. Accounting overall fact, the success of distance learning and homeschooling was higher with parents who have a good educational and socioeconomic background. The impact of these education systems appears to be long-lasting and may contribute to rising disparities.
Research limitations/implications
This study will help to pay close attention to the constraints and implications of distance learning activities, along with homeschooling and its adaptation in the future as a matter of urgency.
Originality/value
Several studies described obstacles encountered by students and academics in the higher education sector. However, this study helps to understand the existing difficulties experienced by parents/guardians with homeschooling and the introduction of distance education via the virtual platform in the primary and secondary education system in Sri Lanka. The findings highlighted the importance of developing sufficient information technology infrastructure facilities throughout the nation before hosting such virtual teaching and learning across Sri Lanka.

Purpose
Bioinformatics is an emerging discipline where the interdisciplinary research holds great promise for the advancement of research and development in many complex areas. The research output generates a huge amount of data and information. Because of the heterogeneous nature of bioinformatics resources, difficulty in accessing pertinent information is the biggest challenge for the bioinformatics community. The integration of bioinformatics resources in a comprehensive manner is advocated by the bioinformatics user community as well as by information scientists serving this community. There are have already been some efforts made for integration of bioinformatics resources by the discrete bioinformatics community, but these are based on the requirement of their own area and arena. This paper aims to discuss the design and development of a tool for the integration of various heterogeneous bioinformatics information resources available over the internet.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors have developed a tool with the acronym “iBIRA” (Integrated Bioinformatics Information Resource Access) that associates the bioinformatics community with the bioinformatics “resourceome” (the term suggested for the “full set of bioinformatics resources” by Cannata et al.). Available over the internet. iBIRA (www.ibiranet.in) integrates bioinformatics resources in a way such that it is possible to locate, connect and communicate different categories of resources in a cohesive manner. A software engineering and database‐driven approach was used for the integration and organization of bioinformatics resources. Computational programming such as Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP), a server‐side dynamic web programming language, and MySQL as a database management system have been used. Dublin Core Metadata Standards have been used for the design of metadata for bioinformatics resources..
Findings
The term “resource” in the area of bioinformatics covers various entities such as journals, molecular biology databases, online annotation tools, patents, published documents (articles, books, etc), protocols, software tools, and web servers. It has been found that bioinformatics resources are heterogeneous in nature and available over the internet in different forms and formats. The fact that bioinformatics resources are scattered over the internet makes resource discovery difficult for the bioinformatics community, and there is need for a system that reorganizes these resources. The integration of all the resources of bioinformatics at a single platform (called “iBIRA”) provides significant “value added” to the bioinformatics community, those serving this population.
Originality/value
The iBIRA tool is a meta‐server developed to provide information service about the availability of various bioinformatics resources to the bioinformatics community. This will provide a value‐added benefit to the population in helping them to locate relevant resources for their education, research and training.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore how variables like propensity to trust, website usability, social influence, customer awareness about internet-only banks (IOBs) and perceived compatibility influence customers’ initial trust formation toward IOBs’ acceptance. The model is based on the technology acceptance model, diffusion of innovation theory and theory of reasoned action.
Design/methodology/approach
A non-probability convenience sample of 239 IOBs’ potential adopters from France was used to test the structural equation model between initial trust antecedents and IOB’s usage intention.
Findings
Findings confirm the important role of trust in initiating customers’ relationship with IOBs and show that social influence, compatibility and website usability contribute the most to IOB’s initial trust formation. Indeed, it has been found that the level of consumer information about IOBs and propensity to trust have a moderate impact on consumer’s initial trust. Results revealed that there is a general lack of consumer’s awareness about IOB’s services features.
Practical implications
To promote the trustworthiness of their sites and services to potential consumers, IOBs should enhance WOM by using social network applications. IOBs need to develop marketing communication campaigns in which they can educate potential customers about IOB’s features. In addition, IOBs should demonstrate to their customers that IOBs’ banking system is consistent with their current lifestyle. IOBs are encouraged to develop a favorable impression by investing heavily on their website usability and information design.
Originality/value
This study contributes significantly to the marketing research literature related to consumer trust and electronic banking literature. Indeed, only a few marketing studies have been conducted about IOBs. The results show the role played by initial trust formation in the case of IOBs. In addition, it points out the importance of five trust cues: individual cues, knowledge cues, institutional cues, cognitive cues and social cues (social influence).

Abstract
A review was carried out of the ‘information landscape’ within the pharmaceuticals‐based molecular biology community, which examined the research problems requiring biological‐sequence data, important sources of information, methods of access, information‐seeking behaviour of end users and the role of libraries and information centres. This work concentrated on the practical aspects of how biological sequence information is managed and used in a research setting and was carried out as part of the MSc in Information Science at the City University. Fifteen questionnaires were sent to information scientists in the UK pharmaceutical industry and a user study was carried out amongst scientists at Celltech. Most of the important primary data are available freely or cheaply via the Internet and molecular biologists were found to be self‐reliant in their use of these resources. Currency of information was found to be very important in the research process and the issue of Internet security was taken very seriously. Most questionnaire respondents saw a productive role in the future for information workers in the field of molecular biology, citing end‐user training and data integration as possible roles, although the degree of involvement will depend on the particular mix of skills and experience that exist within an information department.
