Abstract

This chapter focuses on a case study of Kareem Exchange Company and its use of big data analysis to detect and prevent fraud and suspicious financial transactions. The chapter describes the various phases of the big data analysis cycle, including discovery, data preparation, model planning, model building, operationalization, and communicating results, and how the Kareem Exchange Company team implemented each phase. This chapter emphasizes the importance of identifying the business problem, understanding the resources and stakeholders involved, and developing an initial hypothesis to guide the analysis. The case study results demonstrate the potential of big data analysis to improve fraud detection capabilities in financial institutions, leading to informed decision making and action.

Abstract

Purpose

This chapter critically discusses implications of working with ‘big data’ from the perspective of qualitative research and methodology. A critique is developed of the analytic troubles that come with integrating qualitative methodologies with ‘big data’ analyses and, moreover, the ways in which qualitative traditions themselves offer a challenge, as well as contributions, to computational social science.

Design/methodology/approach

The chapter draws on Interactionist understandings of social organisation as an ongoing production, tied to and accomplished in the actual practices of actual people. This is a matter of analytic priority but also points to a distinctiveness of sociological work which may be undermined in moving from the study of such actualities, suggesting an alternative coming crisis of empirical sociology.

Findings

A cautionary tale is offered regarding the contribution and character of sociological analysis within the ‘digital turn’. It is suggested that ‘big data’ analyses of traces abstracted from actual people and their practices not only miss and distort the relation of social practice to social product but, consequentially, can take on an ideological character.

Originality/value

The chapter offers an original contribution to current discussions and debates surrounding ‘big data’ by developing enduring critiques of sociological methodology and analysis. It concludes by pointing to contributions and interventions that such an empirical programme of qualitative research might make in the context of the ‘digital turn’ and is of value to those working at the interface of traditional and digital(ised) inquiries and methods.

Abstract

While Big Data offer marketing managers information that is high in volume, variety, velocity, and veracity (the 4Vs), these features wouldn’t necessarily improve their decision-making. Managers would still be vulnerable to confirmation bias, control illusions, communication problems, and confidence issues (the 4Cs). The authors argue that traditional remedies for such biases don’t go far enough and propose a lean start-up approach to data-based learning in marketing management. Specifically, they focus on the marketing analytics component of Big Data and how adaptations of the lean start-up methodology can be used in some combination with such analytics to help marketing managers improve their decision-making and innovation process. Beyond the often discussed technical obstacles and operational costs associated with handling Big Data, this chapter contributes by analyzing the various learning and decision-making problems that can emerge once the 4Vs of Big Data have materialized.

Abstract

Professionals who carry out the forensic accounting profession must have an extensive knowledge of accounting, as well as an effective knowledge of law, auditing, internal audit, business management, psychology, crime science, and, in particular, computer technologies. In today’s digital business environment, it has become difficult to identify fraudulent transactions with traditional methods. Developments in information (data) and information technology have helped increase anti-fraud control programs and fraud research opportunities. In particular, fraudulent financial reporting disrupts the reliability, accuracy, and efficiency of financial markets in terms of existence and continuity. The forensic accounting profession has been able to improve the effectiveness of inspections by using big data techniques, data analytics, and algorithms (Rezaee, Lo, Ha, & Suen, 2016; Seda & Kramer, 2014; Singleton & Singleton, 2010).

The aim of the author, in this chapter, is to evaluate the contribution of using big data techniques in forensic accounting applications and the skills that will be provided to students while integrating these techniques in forensic accounting trainings. For this purpose, studies on forensic accounting education and their applications were reviewed. In addition, opinions were evaluated by considering the relevant literature about the importance of big data, benefits of big data, use of big data techniques, and interest shown of them.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to forward an extension of reception analysis as a way to incorporate and give insight to social media mediations and big data in a qualitative marketing perspective. We propose a research method that focuses on discursive developments in consumer debates for example on YouTube – a large-scale open-access social media platform – as opposed to the closed and tightknit communities investigated by netnography.

Methodology/approach

Online reception analysis

Findings

Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, we find that big data can enrich online reception analyses by showing new aspects of weak tie online networks and consumers meaning making.

Research limitations/implications

The potential of online reception analysis is to encompass a discursive perspective on consumer interactions on large-scale open-access social media and to be able to analyze socialities that do not represent shared cultures but are more representative of transitory everyday interactions.

Originality/value of paper

Our method contributes to the current focus to define levels of analysis beyond research centered on individuals and individual interactions within groups to investigate other larger socialities. Further, our method also contributes by incorporating and investigating the mediatization of interaction that social media contributes with and therefore our methods actively work with the possibilities of social media. Hence, by extending the advances made by netnography into online spaces, online reception analysis can potentially inform the current status of big data research with a sociocultural methodological perspective.

Abstract

Introduction: New ideas and concepts of big data have emerged in recent years in response to the astounding growth of data in many industries. Furthermore, the phenomenal increase in the use of the internet and social media has added enormous amounts of data to conventional data processing systems. Still, it has also created challenges for traditional data processing.

Purpose: A significant characteristic of the insurance sector is critically dependent on information. This sector generates a great deal of structured and unstructured data, which traditional data processing techniques cannot handle. As compared to conventional insurance data processing and decision-making requirements, this lesson shows an analysis of data technology’s value additions.

Research methodology: The author assesses the primary use of cases for data in the insurance industry via a case study analysis. From the perspective of the insurance sector, this chapter examines the concepts, technologies, and tools of big data. A few analytical reviews by the insurance company are also provided, which justified several gains gained either through inefficient processing of massive, diverse data sets or by supporting better decisions.

Findings: This chapter demonstrates the importance of adopting new business models that allow insurers to move beyond understand and protect and become more predictive and preventative by using the tools and technologies of big data technology.

Abstract

This chapter uses multiple research methods, including quantitative science mapping analysis (SciMat) and a qualitative literature review, to provide insight into the academic debate unfolding at the intersection of big data and business processes. SciMat analysis based on keyword co-occurrence enabled identifying 12 of the most productive research themes, as reflected in a poll of 301 articles about big data and business processes. The three most important themes are: firm performance, Industry 4.0, and innovation. The traditional literature review on firm performance indicated that big data analytics (BDA) positively influence business process performance and have a beneficial impact on a firm’s performance, that is, the role of big data is viewed as critical in the context of Industry 4.0 because it enhances productivity and improves business processes. The benefits of BDA can be achieved only if the organizational obstacles related to planning, workforce attitude, and alignment with strategy are overcome. Moreover, big data is perceived as a significant source of innovation in an organization and can be conceptualized with the use of a resource-based view (RBV) of the firm. BDA positively influence business processes, which is strengthened by adequate implementation and openness to innovation.

Abstract

Introduction: In recent years, fresh big data ideas and concepts have emerged to address the massive increase in data volumes in several commercial areas. Meanwhile, the phenomenal development of internet use and social media has not only added to the enormous volumes of data available but has also posed new hurdles to traditional data processing methods. For example, the insurance industry is known for being data-driven, as it generates massive volumes of accumulated material, both structured and unstructured, that typical data processing techniques can’t handle.

Purpose: In this study, the authors compare the benefits of big data technologies to the needs for insurance data processing and decision-making. There is also a case study evaluation concentrating on the primary use cases of big data in the insurance business.

Methodology: This chapter examines the essential big data technologies and tools from the insurance industry’s perspective. The study also included an analytical analysis that supported several gains made by insurance companies, such as more efficient processing of large, heterogeneous data sets or better decision-making support. In addition, the study examines in depth the top seven use cases of big data in insurance and justifying their use and adding value. Finally, it also reviewed contemporary big data technologies and tools, concentrating on their key concepts and recommended applications in the insurance business through examples.

Findings: The study has demonstrated the value of implementing big data technologies and tools, which enable the development of powerful new business models, allowing insurance to advance from ‘understand and protect’ to ‘predict and prevent’.

Abstract

Purpose

This chapter considers the challenges and potentials of using so called big data in communication research. It asks what lessons big data research can learn from digital ethnography, another method of gathering digital data.

Design/methodology/approach

The chapter first takes on the task of clearly defining big data in the context of communication and media studies. It then moves on to analyse and critique processes associated with the dealings of big data: datafication and dataism. The challenges of data-driven research are juxtaposed with qualitative perspectives on research regarding data gathering and context. These thoughts are further elaborated in the second part of the chapter where the lessons learned in digital ethnography are linked to challenges of big data research.

Findings

It is proposed that by including the materialities of contexts and transitions between material and mediated realms, we can ask more relevant research questions and gain more insights compared to a purely data-driven approach.

Practical implications

This chapter encourages researchers to reflect upon their relations to the object of study and the context in which data was produced through human/human–technical interaction.

Originality/value

This chapter contributes to debates about qualitative and quantitative research methods in communication and media studies. Moreover, it proposes that methods which are in the widest sense used in the never-ending digital field benefit from the mutual consideration of both qualitative and quantitative approaches.
