Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the medium‐term planning problem in supply chain networks. Based on a literature review, a comprehensive analytical planning model for the three echelon tactical planning problem in supply chain networks is developed which is applicable in a hierarchical planning frame.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach used was mathematical mixed integer programming to model three echelon production‐distribution networks embedded in the supply chain planning matrix frame. Application of the model in a multi‐site planning process based on a case study from the industrial transformer supply chain was also undertaken.

Findings

Integrated multi‐period medium‐term planning with customer oriented single sourcing is an efficient method to implement mathematical optimal solutions in practice as it provides comprehensive tactical plans and network designs. These can be used for scenario analysis in a coordination process with independent supply chain partners.

Research limitations/implications

The implementation of a mathematical optimal plan in a complex business network structure requires a big‐bucket model solution to grant the plan's stability via sufficient time buffers.

Originality/value

The paper displays development of a multi‐period three echelon tactical production‐distribution‐transportation model with different capacities, transportation modes, product types and single sourcing decisions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the challenges created by unlimited storage in space and time.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper looks at the issue from a practioner's viewpoint and considers it from the philosophical perspective regarding unlimited storage.

Findings

Unlimited storage in terms of space and time can present philosophical and technological problems. The rise of the semantic web search engines will help transform this process, but for most organisations it will be a managerial issue rather than a technological issue.

Research limitations/implications

More work needs to be done into how semantic web will influence records management.

Practical implications

Semantic web is in its infancy, but it has far reaching consequences for records management because it can transform the process.

Social implications

The philosophical issues affect how to understand memory and what the collective memory of a society, as seen through archives, is understood and challenged by unlimited storage in space and time.

Originality/value

Looks at the issue from a philosophical perspective and pushes, the boundaries of the field by looking at the implications of the new developments.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the framework for a model that can be used to estimate the production rate, activity duration, total fuel use, and total pollutants emissions from earthwork activities. A case study and sensitivity analysis for an excavator performing excavations are presented.

Design/methodology/approach

The tool is developed by combining the multiple linear regressions (MLR) approach for modeling the productivity with the EPA's NONROAD model. The excavator data were selected to build the productivity model, and emission factors of all type of pollutants from NONROAD model were used to estimate the total fuel use and emissions.

Findings

Results indicate that the excavator productivity model had high precision and accuracy, low bias, with trench depth and bucket size are in the model, it can explain 92 per cent variability of productivity rate data, and can be used as the basis for estimating the fuel quantities that will be required and the total expected pollutant emissions for the project.

Practical implications

The estimating tool proposed in this paper will be an effective means for assessing the fuel consumptions and air emissions of earthwork activities and will allow equipment owners or fleet managers, policy makers, and project stakeholders to evaluate their construction projects. The tool will help the contractors to estimate the fuel quantities and pollutant emissions, which would be valuable information for a preliminary environmental assessment of the project.

Originality/value

Although there are already methods and models for estimating productivity rate and emissions for heavy duty diesel (HDD) construction equipment, there currently is not a means for doing all of these at once.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a synergistic approach that combines both construction and environmental expertise to lay the groundwork for a model that can be used to estimate the productivity rate and emissions from construction equipment activities.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed estimating tool is developed by combining the productivity rate model from a reliable construction estimating data sources and the calculation algorithm employed by the EPA's NONROAD model. In order to develop productivity models, simple earthwork activities involving bulldozer, excavator, and dump truck were selected.

Findings

The MLR approach proved to be a useful alternative for estimating productivity rate of three pieces of equipment. The MLR models for the productivity rate can explain high percentage of the variability in the data. The models are good to be used as a benchmark for estimating NOX and PM emissions from some certain types of construction equipment performing earthwork activities. The productivity rate from this model (lcy/hr) is used with emission factors (g/hp‐hr) from EPA's NONROAD model to estimate the total emissions.

Practical implications

The estimating tool proposed in this paper will be an effective means for assessing the environmental impacts of construction activities and will allow equipment owners or fleet managers, policy makers, and project stakeholders to evaluate more sustainable alternatives. The tool will help the contractor to estimate the total expected pollutant emissions for the project, which would be valuable information for a preliminary environmental assessment of the project.

Abstract

According to the unique style and historical significance, Chinese ancient architecture which has a long history, plays an important role in world architecture. Most of Chinese ancient architecture uses wooden frame as a load-bearing system, however, a unique combination of components has emerged in its development. Due to the well-preserved ancient buildings and a long historical and cultural background of Qijiang ancient town, the paper takes the Qijiang ancient town as an example through field measurement and investigation. The composition of the external environment of the building, architectural characteristics and building monomer composition were analyzed and studied. The unique architectural art charm of Qijiang ancient town was showed. Moreover, the delimitation of the protection scope mainly includes the scope of protected areas and the scope of the construction control zone. Among them, the protected areas are generally divided into key protected areas and general protected areas; the construction control zones are generally divided into Type I of construction control zone and Type II of construction control zones. Ancient buildings are the most existing heritage types in China and are an important part of the immovable cultural relics in China. The group layout of ancient buildings is an important feature in the layout of ancient buildings in China, which is conducive to the realization of the overall protection of heritage.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to point out paradigm shifts in recordkeeping responsibilities from records and information management professionals (RIM professionals) to knowledge workers, caused by advancements in information and communication technologies and by user and organizational expectations. The impact of these changes on the implementation of professional records management (RM) principles and guidelines particularly in ISO 15489 is discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper looks at the issues from an academic viewpoint by reviewing ISO 15489's RM principles presented in Part 1 and guidelines in Part 2 of the standard. The currency of the standard in capturing the changing practices that are flowing into RM approaches are then evaluated against four of the principles. These four principles are reviewed against three key paradigm shifts.

Findings

The authors present evidence of significant paradigm shifts relating to changing technology, work practices, devolution of recordkeeping responsibilities to users, their growing expectations, and increasing organizational concerns for RM accountability. These are generating pressure on RM systems to change and become more responsive. This review highlights the critical need to better appreciate the changing RM context and its implications for broader policy and professional practice.

Practical implications

The key practical implication identified in the paper relates to reconceptualisation of the roles of RIM professionals, knowledge workers and senior management for recordkeeping.

Social implications

The changing nature of RM in organizations will necessitate stronger engagement of knowledge workers and senior management with their RM services.

Originality/value

This paper focuses on the user responsibilities for RM versus traditional RIM professionals having this role. The paper offers an innovative view of professional RM practice and suggests some new directions for RIM professionals to better accommodate user needs and expectations.

Abstract

Purpose

Compulsive social media use has the potential to reduce well-being. In this study, the authors propose that there are two main paths to compulsive social media consumption. One is behavioral and based on habit; the other is motivational and rooted in the fear of missing out. This study aims to test the antecedents of these two drivers as well as their consequences for the tendency to engage in compulsive social media consumption.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors applied a quantitative research design and collected data through a survey of 600 respondents from a representative sample. The authors used structural equation modeling to test their conceptual model and hypotheses. Gender and age were included as moderators to investigate the model’s boundary conditions.

Findings

The authors found support for all the suggested relationships in the conceptual model. The findings indicate two main manifestations of compulsive social media use – always being logged in (i.e. the frequency of social media consumption) and excessive use (the intensity of consumption) – that in turn spurred a reinforcer of compulsivity: disconnection anxiety. The findings also indicate two main paths to compulsive social media consumption. One path is behavioral, based on habit, and the other is motivational, based on fear of missing out. Moreover, the authors identified the key antecedents of both paths. Habit formation was observed to be a function of situational cues (technological nudges in the online sphere) and consumer engagement. Fear of missing out was shaped by both injunctive norms (a consumer norm to be online) and descriptive norms (social proof).

Research limitations/implications

Although the antecedents of compulsive social media consumption suggested in this study have a strong and significant effect, the explained variance in the dependent variables being always logged in and excessive social media use indicates that there might be other drivers as well. These should be explored along with moderators other than gender and age to identify the potential boundary conditions of the model.

Practical implications

The main implications of the present work point to the “ease” with which typical or normal social media use may spiral out of control and become compulsive, with adverse implications for consumer health and well-being.

Originality/value

The behavioral and motivational paths to compulsive social media consumption have been less explored and have not yet been studied in conjunction, nor have their antecedents and consequences. Thus, this is a novel approach to understanding how social media use can potentially lead to reduced control and well-being.

Purpose

The capacitated lot sizing problem (CLSP) is one of the most important production planning problems which has been widely studied in lot sizing literature. The CLSP is the extension of the Wagner-Whitin problem where there is one product and no capacity constraints. The CLSP involves determining lot sizes for multiple products on a single machine with limited capacity that may change for each planning period. Determining the right lot sizes has a critical importance on the productivity and success of organizations. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

This study focuses on the CLSP with setup carryover and backordering. The literature focusing on this problem is rather limited. To fill this gap, a number of problem-specific heuristics have been integrated with fix-and-optimize (FOPT) heuristic in this study. The authors have compared the performances of the proposed approaches to that of the commercial solver and recent results in literature. The obtained results have stated that the proposed approaches are efficient in solving this problem.

Findings

The computational experiments have shown that the proposed approaches are efficient in solving this problem.

Originality/value

To address the solution of the CLSP with setup carryover and backordering, a number of heuristic approaches consisting of FOPT heuristic are proposed in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to complement a previous article on using the Cynefin framework to make sense of the electronic records management challenge. Its focus is on how to use Cynefin, and the ERM framework developed using it, as an approach to addressing this wicked problem. The aim is to provide examples of how they could be used in practice in different organisational contexts.

Design/methodology/approach

Four examples are provided. Empirical research data are used to underpin three of the examples and a thought experiment using published literature informs the fourth.

Findings

The examples illustrate the potential value and power of the Cynefin framework as both a practical and conceptual tool in the ERM context. It can be used to address the ERM challenge in different ways: as a strategic approach taking a holistic view and/or as a tactical approach at a more specific granular level. It can be used to inform practice by helping practitioners choose the most appropriate approach dependent on the level of complexity of the issue they are addressing, whether that is for a specific issue, a project or initiative, for planning or for exploratory, sense-making purposes.

Research limitations/implications

The examples draw on one qualitative, empirical set of research data and one published use. Further experimentation and practical use are required; others are encouraged to use Cynefin to test the propositions and provide further examples.

Practical implications

The examples provided can be adopted and/or adapted by records professionals, both practitioners and/or academics, at strategic and tactical levels in different records contexts.

Originality/value

This paper provides examples of adopting a different approach to tackling the wicked problem of managing electronic records using the Cynefin framework as a new lens.
