Downloading and uploading offer labour‐saving advantages and are now accepted as useful options in online searching. All aspects are here considered, from recent technical advances, applications and legal attitudes. There is also a review of current software for downloading. Recent developments mean a trend to higher internal memory and storage capacity, and greater transmission speeds. Packages now offer access to more than one host, give maximum assistance to the user without being menu‐driven and incorporate the latest developments in artificial intelligence. Disadvantages are in the length of time involved in the process and the fact that the legal issue of copyright has not yet been finalised. Database producers have turned to licensing under contract law, but there is still need to rely on user ethics, and the need for a standard permissions form is highlighted.

Describes a process of gradual implementation of authority control in the COBISS library information system in Slovenia (COBISS.SI). The CONOR.SI initial authority database contained, at the time of its implementation, over 24,000 authority records for personal authors, mostly Slovenian, from publishing production of the last few years. It was created automatically based on personal bibliographies of Slovenian researchers and the Slovenian national bibliography for monographs in COBISS.SI. Also describes: major conceptual issues related to the entire implementation logic of authority control; the upgrading of software for shared cataloguing required by the implementation of authority control; and the implementation process itself. Presents some experiences related to cataloguing with authority control within COBISS.SI together with plans on the subsequent implementation of authority control for other types of headings.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the current state of the existing research on the application of semantic technologies in bibliographic databases by providing answers to a set of research questions resulting from a systematic literature review.

The present study consists of conducting a systematic literature review of research works related to the application of semantic technologies in bibliographic databases. A manual keyword search is performed in known academic databases. As a result, a total of 78 literature sources are identified as related to the topic and included in the review. From the selected literature sources, information is extracted, which is then summarized and analyzed according to previously defined research questions and finally reported. Besides, a framework is defined to classify literature sources found and collected as a result of the study. The main criteria, according to which the classification is performed, are the used semantic technology and the research problem for which semantic technologies are applied in bibliographic databases. The classification of the publications is verified by each author independently of others.

The conducted systematic scientific review establishes that the evolution of semantic technologies sets a period of increased interest in the researchers, as a result of which the advantages of using them for bibliographic descriptions are examined and practically confirmed. After defining semantic models for bibliographic descriptions and approaches to transform existing bibliographic data into their correspondence, the research interest is directed at their comparison, collation; enrichment to facilitate search and retrieval of useful information. Possible perspectives for future research are outlined, which mainly relate to the complete use of the created data sets and their transformation into knowledge repositories.

Despite the increasing importance of the semantic technologies in various areas, including the bibliographic databases, there is a lack of comprehensive literature review and classification of literature sources relevant to this topic. The detailed study proposed in the present paper supports introducing with the existing experience in the application of semantic technologies in bibliographic databases, as well as facilitates the discovery of trends and guidelines for future research.

Proposes a new model of bibliographic access, the virtual catalogue, to serve the virtual library. Suggests the use of current software and networks to build links between distributed bibliographic databases of all kinds, including full text, to enable the user to search a specified subset of them. Suggests that local data be limited to holdings information linked to, but separate from, bibliographic databases both local and remote.

Automation planners need to view retrospective conversion from an informed and balanced perspective. They must consider: 1) the technical dimensions of retrospective conversion, 2) the appropriate standards to employ, 3) the proper relationship of conversion activities to the entire automation project, and 4) options available for converting a bibliographic database into machine‐readable format. Six prominent consultants provide important advice on this topic.

States that since 1980, UKOLN has been carrying out a survey to monitor the availability of bibliographic records in the BNB files on the British Library automated information service (Blaise). Work on the ordering stage sample is now to be extended by investigating the availability of records from other sources of bibliographic records. Looks at the survey and the new sources to be included in the extended survey. Divides the participant sources (BNB, BDS, Book Data, J. Whitaker & Sons, BLCMP, CURL, LASER, OCLC and SLS (Information Systems) Ltd into two groups and describes the survey methodology and sample structure. Presents a set of source profiles which have been prepared as background material to accompany the results for each source since straight comparisons would not be advisable, given the differences in objectives and set‐up of the sources. Gives some comparisons of the features of different sources.

The National Bibliographic Information Network (NBINet) in Taiwan is a bibliographic database established on 30 October 1991 and maintained by the National Central Library. In 1998 there were 26 member libraries and 70 non‐member libraries in NBINet, which is considered a comprehensive database for Chinese studies worldwide and contains more than 1.6 million bibliographic records. This paper discusses the problems encountered in the establishment of NBINet and the solutions related to computers and networks, NBINet’s utilization on the Internet, and user expectations of NBINet.
